Quite strong winds yesterday which seemed to affect some lifts around the valley, and limited visibility too, but it was great to check out that fresh snow. This morning it is a whole different story with lovely blue skies and my favorite mountains are looking totally amazing. That's because they are. Some cloud around but blue sky and sunshine. I'm going to pre-empt some excite questions! How can Happo-one report 5cm at Usagidaira and 15cm at the close-by but higher Kurobishi at the same resort? ...or... How can Happo-one report 15cm when others report 0cm? If you can't 'accept' (?!) these numbers, as officially put out there by the ski resorts and simply reported to you by myself, I humbly suggest that you direct such questions to the resorts concerned. We have a nice new layer of fresh snow, slightly over 20cm with about half of that coming overnight, the rest mostly in the afternoon yesterday. It feels cold as well this morning with temperatures well below zero. There's not much of a wind and snow continues to fall with visibility fair to limited as you go higher up. Forecasts seem to show the chance of some clearer weather later. I think it should be a good morning. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So it was rather windy yesterday and that means that there's going to be some wind blown conditions this morning, meaning there'll probably be some deeper fresh in places and hard and icy conditions in others. And difficult to know what's where. That along with the recent changes in temperatures mean we really need to be aware and take care out there. Down here at base I can only report (slightly over) 1cm which is a bit disappointing. It feels kind of milder again this morning, maybe it's just me; generally cloudy-overcast with some light snow falling in places. Those stronger winds have eased off and we are starting the day with all lifts scheduled to start up as planned. We can still expecting some more fresh snow over the coming few days. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -2.0°, trace new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: SSE 165deg 3.8m/s , -5.2°, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: SSE 154deg 10.5m/s, no temp data. Yu no Sawa 1000m: SW 227deg 3.3m/s, -7.5. Niseko Village 900m: S 174 deg 5.2m/s, -6.7°. Hirafu 1000m : S 179deg 11.4m/s, -7.5°. Hanazono 720m: SSW 191deg 8.7m/s, -5.4°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:SSE 8m/s. Kamui Cape E 2m/s, 999hPa, wave 2.2m. In places above 700m there is large amounts of snowdrift development on the Niseko Range due to an easterly wind yesterday from a slow moving low pressure system. Snowdrifts are weakly bonded due to hail mixed with the low pressure snowfall and snowdrift stability will be delayed. Although the wind is starting to weaken it is still strong at higher elevations. Avalanche risk is continues to be high above 900m on steep open slopes and knolls. Gate openings are expected to be delayed. Please follow the patrols advice. Most accidents happen during or right after a storm. Be cautious today. The snow in the trees is a bit unusual, a bit heavy but not too bad. Watch out for hidden snow bridges collapsing. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Fresh snow! Cold! It feels like winter! :) Kumanoyu and Yakebitaiyama are both reporting about 15cm of fresh snowfall, with the latter hinting at more on the mountain. My over enthusiastic friend (bless him) is reporting more than 30cm. I can report 17cm from my two measuring points. So all in all I reckon that you can expect at least 15cm and probably more across the area this morning which is good to be able to report. It's not too windy but stronger winds are forecast for later on in the day. I should have more cm to report tomorrow as it is still snowing... All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Resorts are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snowfall on their upper areas and 5-10cm down at base. And I have measured 8cm. (Phew). Should be a good morning! Back to being cold too, so get wrapped up well. Hopefully there'll be more to report tomorrow too as it continues to snow. Less good news is stronger winds affecting lifts at the Happo-one resort. As of 9am, the gondola and upper lifts are on hold. It appears that just the Nakiyama triple and Kokusai Number 1 pair are going up from base. Cortina has some restrictions too but other resorts appear to be opening as normal, which brings me to.... Regarding details of individual ski resort operations - I continue to do my best providing as many details as possible each morning, but operations change literally every day; and sometimes during the day. Such changeable conditions means that covering the situation is... difficult. I highly recommend that if you are here in Hakuba and heading out to a ski resort, you check with your chosen destination before going. If you are staying at an accommodation I am sure the staff there will be able to help too. Ah yes, a return to snow with 10cm on the ground after the rain turned to snow later in the day yesterday; most of that is from yesterday with a couple more overnight. The resort has increased the top snow depth by 20cm so you'd think that means 20cm up there - worth checking out I'd say! It was snowing an hour ago too, but right now there is actually some sun and blue sky to be seen. Early birds might well be rewarded.
