  • Hakuba Now: Thursday 27th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 175cm Posted on Thursday 27th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. More good news this morning with additional fresh snow to report. Headlines: Cortina reporting 20-30cm across their slopes; Happo, Goryu and 47 reporting 5-10cm at base and 15+cm higher up. Nice. Great to see more down to base and some bigger numbers higher up. Should be fun up there. Visibility is limited on mountain this morning (it was actually a little clearer when I first got up with a hint of blue sky in places) and we are likely to have some more snow during the day particularly at higher elevations. As I write this though it is snowing. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 388cm Posted on Wednesday 26th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello. Well, this morning it feels a bit more winter-like - I even have some fresh snow to report which is a nice surprise. It came last night. Kumanoyu are even reporting 10cm early on. I measured 6cm. The snow is a bit on the heavy and wet side, but heavy snow is certainly better than rain. Visibility is very limited at the start of the day. We're due more snow from later today into tomorrow - it'll be getting colder too (it's on the mild side this morning). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back to winter again today (winter-ish, anyway) after rain at the end of the day yesterday. About 1cm of fresh snow, and it's interesting, sticky snow made up of tiny needles of ice. Probably a lot more to fall, which would be great; although the resorts aren't reporting much loss in the snowpack, you know it's going down. Actually, I should be nicer; several of the resorts have been really honest about their low snow levels, and have reported new snow in a really responsible way, too. It's a tough year for them, I know. And for saké makers, gasoline stations (no long queues of snowplows needing thousands of liters of fuel), rice farmers (worrying about water, since there's not that much snow), hotel owners, backcountry guides... • Niseko Now: Tuesday 25th February 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 656cm Posted on Tuesday 25th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Some lovely snow to play in yesterday morning. Some lift disruption during the day and so I reckon there should still be some nice conditions this morning; helped along with the additional snow... I measure 6cm from overnight down here at base, likely more on the mountain. The sun is out and lots of blue sky at the start of the day today. All lifts should be moving as scheduled. There's not a whole lot of snowfall on the forecast for the week ahead. Rather, quite a bit of sunshine. But it should be remaining pretty cold which is good to see. So if you want fresh, this morning is highly recommended. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -4°, 5cm new snow in last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: N 350deg 4.4m/s, -6.0°. There has been some minor snow drift development on SE slopes above 800m. From test and observation there is no obvious avalanche risk. All gates are expected to be open after preparations are made. Open steep slopes like Kozan no Sawa sidewall, under Osawa wind lip and Higashi One are high risk. There are cracks hidden by the last few days snowfall at elevations below 600m. Ride slopes 1 by 1 and it is strongly recommended that you have avalanche gear. Please listen to and follow the patrols advice. Accidents can be prevented. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 325cm Posted on Monday 24th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba. Well, Day 2 of the World Cup event here at Naeba was cancelled yesterday. Strong windy conditions just didn't allow it to happen. At one point just one lift was operating. A lot of people had put in a lot of work getting everything ready battling less-than-perfect snow conditions etc. So it seems pretty cruel that after all that, it couldn't be completed. But what can we do. It's frankly going to be hard for people to put on a happy face this morning. (I wasn't even directly involved in any way, and I know I'm struggling). Anyway, a very big 'otsukaresama' to everyone involved along with the acknowledgement of the disappointment of many. Onwards we go and this morning things are much calmer and it's mostly blue skies over Naeba with a few white fluffy clouds. The sun is out. Today is a national holiday and with the nice weather I personally hope lots of people turn up and the resort can enjoy a good day. See you tomorrow. I probably under-reported on the snow yesterday, but the strong stormy winds were blowing it all about and so putting a number on it proved to be difficult. This morning it's a mix of cloud and clearer skies for the last day of the long weekend. Not as windy thankfully and lifts appear to be moving as planned. There's more snow lined up on the forecast, starting from tomorrow night and perhaps snow over the following few days. Looks like it is going to get colder again.
