Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 270cm Posted on Friday 28th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao. Some snow from yesterday but we are starting the day today with lots of blue sky, sunshine and some cloud. It's a fine morning and I am happy that it is remaining cold. It should remain in the low negative numbers here at base for the day. Zao is.... quiet. If you want to experience what will probably be a quiet weekend, now's your chance! It seems like tomorrow is forecast generally cloudy with more of a chance of sun on Sunday; perhaps slightly milder temperatures too. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 425cm Posted on Friday 28th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. More fresh snow to report this cold morning. Kumanoyu are reporting 20cm of fresh snow; the Yakebitaiyama resort area is reporting a whopping 50cm 'since yesterday' (whilst adding just 10cm to their official snow depth number... I know... take it up with them, not me!) Whatever, fresh snow is good to report. And conditions should be good this morning. Cloud and some light snow lingering early morning but there are some areas with the sun trying to peek through. Whether that's just a blip or a sign of a clear up, we'll just have to see. All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions). - Myoko Now: Friday 28th February 2020
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 757cm Posted on Friday 28th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has just stopped, after adding another 40cm. Nice. Another day to hone those snow-clearing skills (another early morning; the sound of the rotary plow at 3:30 is the signal of duties ahead). But it's in the name of snow, so it's all good. Nice and sunny this morning, although the clouds seem to suddenly pop into existence and cover most of the sky, and just as suddenly disappear. Interesting phenomenon.... Nothing more to add, except you really should get out there. One thing; did see a lot of sluffing of loose snow on steep slopes yesterday, and signs of similar instability today. Be careful going offpiste, as there is a lot of new snow up high, and much of it is wind-affected and possibly even a bit compacted (and therefore not so safe). Don't go alone; look where a potential slide would take you. - Nozawa Now: Friday 28th February 2020
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 402cm Posted on Friday 28th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . If my recording of the numbers yesterday evening was correct, the resort was reporting 10-32cm (base-top) of snowfall during the day yesterday and this morning there is another 10-22cm. That is a range of 20cm at base and 54cm up top, as reported by the resort. That upper number seems rather a lot - I wasn't out on the mountain yesterday, but their numbers are usually trustworthy (Nasuki would complain otherwise) and so I am eager go to check it out this morning. So lower slopes have had a decent reset and the mountain should be in good shape this morning. Potentially really great shape. I'll know once I check. Cloudy skies are expected today, though there is already some blue sky and sun breaking through as I post this report. Mostly sunny skies forecast for tomorrow. The resort has cancelled the Garigari-kun Festa event that it has planned for tomorrow and Sunday - it is a precautionary measure due to the coronavirus situation. Other than that the resort is open as planned. Let us all hope that the news on that front gets better soon. I'm being careful doing the washing hands thing etc, but feel that a day in the fresh cold air on the mountain is very low risk. (Personal comment!) Fresh snowfall recorded by resort since yesterday morning: - Yamabiko (1407m): 32 + 22cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 24 + 20cm - Hikage (660m): 13 + 17cm - Nagasaka (615m): 20 + 17cm - Karasawa (563m): 10 + 10cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by resort): - Yamabiko (1407m): 240cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 185cm - Hikage (660m): 90cm - Nagasaka (615m): 80cm - Karasawa (563m): 40cm All lifts normally operating apart from the following lifts: - Yunomine pair - Challenge pair - Mizunashi triple - Utopia pair All courses normally open apart from the following courses: - Kandahar - Grand Prix - Jumping - Hachiman - Mukobayashi - Skyline (lower area) Nighta until 8:00pm - Nagasaka Four lift operates during nighta - Every Saturday until 28th March - 20th March - Subject to change Nozawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Friday 28th February 2020 Total snowfall at base 402cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 32 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (9th February) November 2019 snowfall 4cm reported on 2 days December 2019 snowfall 33cm reported on 5 days January 2020 snowfall 120cm reported on 11 days February 2020 snowfall 245cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Hello from Madarao. The mountain is looking so yummy this morning I want to eat it. Fresh snow on the slopes and all the trees are laden with it. With blue skies above us and the sun shining down. Gorgeous. This morning Madarao are reporting 15cm, which actually seems a bit conservative compared to what I see, and the snow depth data is suddenly up to 160cm. The official number over at Tangram is up to 120cm (up 20cm). Keeping cold with sun and maybe some cloud today and with sunshine and milder conditions tomorrow. Weather and snow wise, should be a very good weekend. Looks like Crystal Bowl is open now, so the only tree run course not open currently is Powder Wave. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . If it was winter-ish yesterday, winter is here today. A normal (40cm+) snowfall overnight, some strong winds from the north (drifts around the house this morning), the sound of snowplows around 4:30 to remind me to get up and get plowing. Very satisfying, actually. Just need to ski on top of all this. It's still coming down very steadily, adding a few centimeters every hour. As usual, it looked like it would taper off around 6:30 am, but it picked up again and the snow is coming down an the wind is blowing snow around. I don't think the winds are strong enough to stop lifts, but always a good idea to check, especially the gondolas or high lifts that are affected by wind. But really a welcome day!
