The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It snowed pretty hard for a moment last night - big flakes, good quantity. Normal Myoko snowfall, but not something we've seen a lot of this year. Earlier this morning there wasn't a lot on the ground, but in the last few hours some of the best snowfall this season fell for a short while. It's tapered off at the moment, but it was falling at a rate of a couple of centimeters per hour, with 10cm of new up to now. I almost feel like I'll jinx it with this positive prattling, but it's really great to see. The temperature, too, is holding at -1°C at base, which is a first in a long time. In fact, I think the accumulation so far actually came after a lot of the resorts made their early-morning reporting, so I'll step out on that limb and predict you'll find some nice fresh out there, and likely more up high. Akakura Kanko: 150cm, -2° Akakura Onsen: 155cm, -2° Ikenotaira Onsen: 75cm, -3° Myoko Suginohara: 75cm, -5° Seki Onsen: 300cm, no temperature. Appears to be open. And actually while there is quite a lot of cloud around, it's at the same time bright and the sun is peeking through the clouds at times. The forecast still says snow during the middle of the day - as well as some windy conditions. I'll let you know how that goes tomorrow morning. Limited visibility at the moment on the upper areas as snow continues to fall and we will maybe get more to report tomorrow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some nice snow early in the morning (and it was an early trip to the station, and not the near one, that got me a bit late!). Actually a very dynamic weather situation early on, with snow falling here and there around the big open spread from Myoko down to the ocean. Like big sheets of snow obscuring the mountains, the sun coming out, rain here and there. An almost early winter feeling. But it is getting warmer today, as it's already up to about 6° here at base level. But it does look like some pretty good snowfall tomorrow. Could we have one last big blast? The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's snowing. Sorry, I missed the update that the resort made yesterday afternoon so I cannot report any numbers they put out there. What I can say is that there is a thin layer of snow on the ground down to base and the resort is reporting 2cm since yesterday at 3pm... they also added 10cm to the snow depth up top. So yes it is snowing right now as I write this report, though the forecast doesn't seem to be telling us to expect snow during the day today. Potentially we will have a period of heavy snow (yes, heavy snow!) in the daytime tomorrow. That should be very interesting. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The sun is making itself seen this morning and we have a lot of blue sky. 3cm of snow observed since yesterday which isn't as much as I would have though given that we did have snow falling for a large part of the time. Unfortunately I was not able to get out yesterday due to something suddenly coming up that I had to see to. But this morning, in updating official snow depth numbers (below), I notice that the upper official snow depth of Niseko Grand Hirafu has jumped up by 40cm. That's probably one of the biggest jumps of the season. Even given what I said in the report yesterday, was there really that much?! I would like to think so. And I am going to make an extra effort to get up there myself today. Take care! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -5℃, 2cm snowfall in 12h, calm morning. Mowa 800m: SE 189°1.6m/s, -7.4℃, 40cm snowdrift in 24h, good visibility and calm. Annupuri 1100m: WSW 243°2.1m/s, no temp data. Yu no sawa 1000m: SSW 243°2.6m/s, -9.9℃. Village 900m: S 173°1.6m/s, -9.4℃. Hirafu 1000m: no wind data, -10.0℃. Hanazono 720m: S 185°3.1m/s, -8.0℃. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: WNW6m/s, Kamui cape: SW12m/s, 1011hPa, 2.1m waves. The isobars are spacing out and the wind is calming down. Cold air is flowing in. The snowdrifts above 800m elevation that developed yesterday seems to have stabilized by this morning. Looking at the data transitions, the general avalanche risk is low today. A good 15-20cm layer of fresh snow has blanketed the tree-runs. Cornices above 900m elevation are still likely to collapse, better not unnecessarily stimulate them. Peak gates are being ready to open from the morning. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice and be well prepared for backcountry traveling. There is no guaranteed safety in the out of bounds. Always make conservative decisions in the mountains.
