There is early morning fog sitting right over the mountain at the moment, but off the mountain there are large areas of blue sky and sunshine. It looks like the fog will lift, but the forecast is for further snow mid morning. Still plenty of good skiing on the Furano Zone with the mountain open from top to bottom. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. It's snowing and there is a thin layer of snow on the ground. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 2-3cm. It is cold too. Feels like winter. Some more lifts are closed again for weekday operations and I have updated the info below. Note that it is quite windy as well and some lifts that are planned to be moving may be affected. Tomorrow should be clearer and calmer. Interestingly the top is reporting just 1cm, but I can see a thin layer down by Hikage base area too - more than yesterday - and it is actually still snowing. The Uenotaira and Paradise lifts and courses are not going to be open, so we are down to just three lifts operating this morning. Sun is forecast for later in the day and for tomorrow too. Should be warmer too tomorrow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, we got some rain yesterday down at base yesterday with some snow higher up, and this morning... I have some snow to report down to base. I have just measured ever so slightly over 5cm of it. Hurray! I wonder how much more there might be up on them there hills. Post-wondering, I think I am going to go check it out. A few lifts are now being rested - today there will be 8 lifts operating across the mountain, as I have noted below. After saying how good Hirafu are at detailed updates in my report yesterday, this morning they haven't updated yet. Doh! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow is falling in Myoko. A fittingly odd end to a really perplexing season. I'm calling this the last day of the 2019-2020, super-low-snow then hit us with a pandemic season. Lotte Arai says it's staying open until May 6, Seki Onsen in unclear about current conditions and plans from now on (but nothing new there), but everyone else is closing today. The worst snow in anyone's memory. This is how this year will be remembered. We all hope it's a fluke, but lots of locals also privately worry if this is the trend of things to come. Not to be negative, dear readers, but we do think about it. Probably should, too! We might have a crazy heavy year next season; they say that can be one of the results of climate change, too. We hope for more, of course! Myoko is a place defined by the snow. It's still a great place in the non-snow times, but.... just seems sad without the huge snow walls and the daily struggle to clear out the massive falls just so we can get out of the driveway. It wasn't terrible on the resorts. There was good snow on many days. There were a lot of "interesting" terrain features that normally would be buried under deeper snow, but can't complain about that. The backcountry was pretty bad, with the brush, trees and vines never really covered over enough to allow for good turns. In fact, it was better mid-mountain (where there are more buna, or beech trees, than up high where it's more open. It was nice that we had almost no avalanche risk through the whole season. There simply wasn't enough snow most of the time, and very small cornices above so less risk of them coming down in spring. As long as we don't get complacent. Saying that, too, there are still WAY too many people heading offpiste with no gear whatsoever. It doesn't matter if the avalanche is 10 meters off the runs or a kilometer away: if you don't have the gear or don't know how to use it, you or your friends are in serious trouble. And it has happened. Myoko really became an "international" resort this year, and I choose that word carefully. I know there are changes that lots of longtime visitors aren't happy about, and I think we'll see a few years of things being in flux as people see yen signs in their eyes, but not the difficulty of running a business here (either because of the heavy snow, or the lack of it this year - who knows how that will affect next year?). But the mountain is still beautiful, and the local folks still surprise with their kindness and humor, even after close to 30 years here... And, of course, now we're all hunkered down, masked up, staying two meters apart, not drinking nearly enough saké (and the corona virus hates alcohol, right? We have a duty to disinfect here). So let's hope for a whole new season next year! And hope you'll be back here, too, reading these daily rantings and reportings on the Myoko snow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I am always honest with you (of course), so this can be no different: I overslept. Doh! My apologies. I haven't even had my toast yet. I have another month or so to go before I can go into my hibernation mode. But enough of me. This morning there is quite a lot of cloud around but blue sky too and the sun is currently shining through my window. Lifts have started as planned the morning but the forecast shows we might get some moderate southerlies today. There is still snow mixed in on the forecasts from tomorrow with a chance of some snowfall the following days too. Not sure what to realistically expect from that but it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I think it's always best to be potentially surprised rather than disappointed at this stage of the season. So what next? Oh yes. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It was a warm one yesterday. Lovely too. There is more thin cloud around this morning but some light blue sky on show and it should be another mild day. And here's something that I prepared earlier... ----- The 2019-2020 season so far: through until the end of March 2020 It’s the start of another month and so that means that it is time for me to look back on March 2020 and the statistics for the season so far. As always, the usual up-front notes. (Shamelessly copied from last month): I take my measurements from close to the base of the Niseko Grand Hirafu area of our mountain. There is usually more snow at higher elevations; many locals often say there’s often ‘about 1.5 times the amount’ that there is at base. And often that seems reasonable. It is impossible for me to take measurements from the top of the mountain every morning for all sorts of practical reasons. The observed snowfall numbers on these Niseko Now reports over the years can all be compared like-for-like, because they are my observations and are coming from the same place each season. And it goes without saying that there's much more to the story than just bare numbers; they may be interesting, but they are not the complete picture. For a more complete idea of the season, please read the reports for each day. OK so here goes. This is how much snowfall I have measured during the month of March over the last eight winter seasons: March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm Not huge numbers but we beat the previous two months this year. Hurray! (I’ll take the win). I was able to record some snowfall on 12 of the 31 days in March 2020. Most of those were in the first half of the month, perhaps as you might expect with spring fast approaching. Having said that, the most over one 24-hour period was on the 17th March when I measured 10cm down at base. Now on to the ‘season to date’ numbers, from the beginning of this season up until 31st March 2020: 2019/2020 season up to end of March 2020: 718cm 2018/2019 season up to end of March 2019: 945cm 2017/2018 season up to end of March 2018: 1,247cm 2016/2017 season up to end of March 2017: 688cm 2015/2016 season up to end of March 2016: 986cm 2014/2015 season up to end of March 2015: 1,141cm 2013/2014 season up to end of March 2014: 1,150cm 2012/2013 season up to end of March 2013: 1,459cm There is no significant change of note to the ongoing commentary of the season really. There has been less snow than we usually expect, but we have fared (much) better than lots of Japan. I have met more than a few people out on the lifts this season who had holidays planned elsewhere in Japan and then decided to change and come up here to the better snow conditions. The coronavirus topic and associated mess that the world increasingly finds itself in has of course become the unavoidable topic of March 2020. The Hokkaido government ‘state of emergency’ came and went... all the while, the ski resorts remained open. And of course, they still are. With the ramped up controls on people coming over from overseas, Niseko has become abnormally quiet. Which has been very nice for some people who have been able to enjoy some uncharacteristically quiet slopes, and giving things a rather different feel from usual. And I must admit, with the knowledge that people are not well and close to home some of my own family in other countries are in ‘lockdown’, it feels rather strange to be sitting down each morning posting weather reports from a ski resort. Of course, we (meaning this website) certainly do not wish to be in any way insensitive. We are here to document the season from the start until the end and this is undoubtedly part of that story, so we feel it is appropriate to document the full season. Most of you reading this probably aren’t here in Niseko, but there are still many people reading the reports every morning. (Hi! Thanks!) There is another 5 weeks left of the (planned) ski season here in Niseko. We usually get a bit of snow down to base, with perhaps a bit more on the mountain. Here’s my observed base numbers from previous Aprils. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. It is 31st March and that means that it is the last day of the 2019-2020 season at both Madarao and the connecting Tangram Ski Circus. The sun is out and it should be a good way to finish up. Given the rather odd nature of this winter season - not just here, but in Japan generally - I think that Madarao and Tangram have done really well. We are actually finishing the season with decent snow cover. That is something that at times seemed... rather unlikely. So well done, and thank you for the good times. This is my last report of the 2019-2020 season. If you don't mind, let me just make comment on my two wishes: - that the world can get sorted out quickly (meaning as quickly as possible) and we all stay safe - that we can enjoy a 'normal' season from December 2020 Right now, 'normal' sounds amazing. And it is. Perhaps we will appreciate 'normal' all the more. More snow than usual that gets us all super excited is always welcome, but so is 'normal'.
