The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Hello from Zao. Zao Onsen has announced that today is the last day of the winter season, due to the developing and fast changing coronavirus situation. They posted a rather brief message in Japanese this afternoon. So that's it for 2019-2020. It has been a rather challenging season. For lots of Japan, and including Zao. Snow has been in relatively short supply and temperatures have often been milder than what we expect. (Still often very cold though up here!) The coronavirus started to become an issue around late January when the number of visitors from overseas started to be limited and it just got bigger and bigger from there. Let us all hope that we can get back to what we think of as normal in time for next winter. You can check out the archive reports at any time. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It's Friday 17th April 2020 and it is the last day of the ski and snowboard season here in Nozawa Onsen. At the end of today that upper area and lifts that remain open today will be able to take a rest. And it looks like it is going to be a beautiful spring day. So it is disappointing - but perhaps inevitable - early end to a unique season. (The planned closing date was 6th May). Here in Nozawa we enjoy a large vertical from base to top, so even if lower slopes struggled at times snow cover up top has not been a problem. (Once we got going). Today the resort is reporting 195cm of snow depth on the top Yamabiko area and 100cm on Uenotaira. Just to compare those numbers with last year on 17th April 2019, Yamabiko was then on 275cm and Uenotaira was on 195cm. But this coronavirus situation has taken things over and the resort made the decision to cut the season short to today. Regarding snowfall. This season I have personally measured/observed 467cm of snowfall down at base. Last year that number was 886cm. The year before it was 700cm. So quite clearly much less at base. 2005-2006 season was quite similar just in terms of the fine total number. Of course, with our large vertical, more snow falls higher up on the mountain and I keep a record of what the resort is reporting up there in each of my reports. While the season has not been as consistent as we normally expect, we have also enjoyed periods of excellence. Living here, I am lucky in that I can go with the flow. Some visitors will have been very lucky; some less so. But I am guessing that even those who didn't get the best snow conditions probably fell in love with the village and the people here. And the onsen. And the food. If you like to study numbers, you can check the data below, archive reports and the Snowfall Analysis page within this report. Numbers by themselves don't tell the full story, so please do read the reports themselves to get a feel for how it all went. All throughout the season there have been hundreds of people making it all happen, both at the ski resort and beyond. Thanks to those folk. And of course to our very own, Nasuki/Naski, who always has a bright (green) smile on their face. And is a vegetable. Who skis. I think it is fair to say that everyone is hoping that this season will prove to be something of a one-off in terms of snowfall and that we can get back to more normal Nozawa-like dumpage next winter. Next season should see a brand new gondola replacing the current Nagasaka Gondola, which is very exciting. It is going to be fun watching that develop over the coming months. As others have wisely said, our 'normal' is excellent. We expect excellence. Perhaps a somewhat patchy season will help us appreciate what we get more than we do. That can't be a bad thing. How this coronavirus situation pans out... well, we'll just have to wait and see and hope. And take care of ourselves and ours and others. That's it from me for this season. Right now visibility is poor up top but improving at base. The day will probably end with clearer skies... and clearer skies are forecast for tomorrow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little last-minute information for anyone still in the area (or those interested in what's going on in Myoko). First: snow. Nine (9) centimeters overnight, and it's still falling very lightly. Just in time for the cherry blossoms down just a little lower (I doubt the snow is falling in greater Myoko City, at 300 meters or below). And the final word on the last two resorts that are still operating. Seki Onsen says it will be open this coming weekend, which is the first definite word from them for a while (I really wasn't sure if they were really open over the last few weeks, since they are no longer in the city's official website, and their own site is, ah, distinctly their own). After that? I doubt they can keep going. And Lotte Arai has announced that, due to the corona virus, the 12th will be their last day of operations. If it's anything over there like it is here at the Akakura Kanko Hotel, things are slow.... We wondered if city folk would be fleeing to the clean, microbe-free are of the mountains, but don't look like it. So there is the official, final word, and we can actually close out this wild season. With snow. I have measured 4cm and I note that Niseko Grand Hirafu seem to be talking about 13cm of snowfall on the upper areas of the mountain. Yey! The fields lower down in town areas aren't covered (or just dusted depending), so typically late season when there is more of a contrast than usual between base and top. Last of the season? Limited visibility out there early morning. Cloudy. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another light sprinkling of snow down at base and hopefully more higher up on the mountain (and I note that Annupuri seem to be saying 5cm and Hirafu are saying 10cm*). That should be nice. I can just about justify the 1cm today at my point, though note that it's nothing more than a dusting in places. It's feeling kind of mild this morning and we are expecting a cloudy day. And cloudy it is. Cloud with the chance of a bit of sun tomorrow with slightly milder temperatures is what the forecast is currently saying. There aren't going to be many more chances of snow this season, but perhaps some more snow around Thursday? ----- * I always find it really curious why many Japanese ski areas appear to report snowfall in units of 5cm (0cm, 5cm, 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, etc). Of course, if 5cm of snow has fallen then the number should be 5cm. But if 3cm of snow has fallen, does that somehow get rounded up to become 5cm? Does 2cm get rounded down to 0cm, or even rounded up to 5cm? Perhaps I am imagining it, though I don't think so. (Is this just a Japan thing? I only know Japan so can't compare.)
