It was really snowing hard when the report was made yesterday morning, and by 6pm 41cm of snow on the main measuring point. That snow was completed cleared and as of 9am this morning there is another 60cm on there (that's what you can see on the photo below). That gives us a full 101cm since yesterday morning. Amazing. In the last day or so the snow walls by the side of roads suddenly seem to have gone from looking kind of cool and friendly to almost looking a bit sinister! (Just kidding - they look great). Remember, some of the snowfall numbers reported by ski areas below are 'since last night' rather than 24 hours, while others a more vague 'since yesterday'. We think it would be more useful to be really clear about that, but it is the way it is. So yes, absolutely tons of snow and it is still snowing now so we are probably going to have another fairly big number tomorrow. After that we can expect a few days of calmer and perhaps brighter weather. As exciting as crazy snowfall is, super care will be required in these conditions. Only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open this morning. At one point earlier on the Route 17 road around Mitsumata was closed due to an avalanche affecting the road but that seems to be clearer now. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. That snowfall number yesterday was really huge, and it hasn't really stopped snowing since then (well, as far as we know). By 6pm there was an additional 28cm of snowfall and this morning there's another 26cm on top of that. So another 54cm since yesterday. That's over 1.5m of snowfall in two reports and it has taken the total snowfall for the season up to 1055cm. It's still snowing this morning but due to start easing off. By this evening it should have stopped. And then, if the local forecasts are correct, we are going to have a few days of calm and at times clearer skies. Due to the massive snowfall of the last few days, the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is going to be closed today (too much snow!) - other areas of GALA are open - and there are also a few restrictions at both the Kagura and Tashiro areas of Kagura. It appears that other ski areas are all open, but some lifts might need digging out and be delayed. Quite a few of the ski areas in the region now have official snow depths of 4 metres and over. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was some light snow falling yesterday, even during the evening, but some brighter spells as well. In the end just a few cm down at town level and this morning Kagura is reporting 10cm. It's a cloudy start to the day but quite bright in some directions and there is increasingly some blue sky in places. We might get some sun today, even if the forecasts say it should be mostly cloudy, with a higher chance of clearer weather from the start of the day tomorrow. The break in the heavy snowfall yesterday has allowed locals to get to grips with it all. There has been a lot of shovelling and moving snow going on and probably lots of tired arms and legs this morning! The first photo today is a 3+m 'snow wall' close to SJ HQ just outside Yuzawa. Forecasts say we should be enjoying the sunshine today and it feels like it will end up that way. All calm now, currently -1C and a high of around +2C in town today. Tomorrow will probably be a bit colder and we might get some more snow falling. The connecting course between Kagura and Tashiro as well as the top Number 5 lift are currently closed due to avalanche risk. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get some snowfall yesterday but this morning there's 6cm of fresh to report. Kagura and Maiko are reporting up to 10cm, Ishiuchi reporting 5cm. Already we have seen some changeable weather this morning. As you can see from the photo below (Maiko) there was quite a bit of blue sky around earlier on, but it's all a bit more cloudy as we approach 8am. There might even be some light snow falling, but nothing significant. Today is a national holiday and so it's a long weekend for many. That normally means that this weekend is one of the busiest of the season. Of course, these are not 'normal' times, but still we can expect places to be relatively busy over the next few days. After a day of cloudy/foggy kind of conditions yesterday in some places, this Monday morning is starting overcast/cloudy - everything is looking white/silver/grey. And there was actually a few cm of snowfall overnight in town (Kagura are reporting up to 10cm) but the roads are clear. Local forecasts say that clearer skies are due today and even lots of sunshine... back to cloud and maybe some more light snow tomorrow. It is currently -1C in town and just a light north westerly wind. A high of around +2C is forecast for later in the day. Quite a lot of people came to the area for the long weekend and it was good to see places fairly busy. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So yesterday we did get some rain in the afternoon but it had thankfully turned into snow by night time and this morning there is new cm of fresh snowfall to report. Kagura are reporting 20cm, Yuzawa Kogen is reporting 10cm, Maiko is reporting 10-20cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 5cm... and we measured 8cm for this report. At the moment it is generally cloudy with some light snow falling in places. Temperature is at 0C and it shouldn't be warming up as much as it did yesterday, perhaps to around 2C at most. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow has started to fall this morning and there's just about 3cm so far as of 7:45am. We are due snow through the day, light to moderate and then perhaps some heavier snow overnight into tomorrow. There's also some decent snowfall on the forecast for Sunday into early week and perhaps even beyond. That looks promising. The snow has slowed down this last 7-10 days, but hopefully we still have some decent numbers ahead of us... though it may well be the last 'big snow' of the season. Hopefully not, of course! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 1095cm Posted on Friday 18th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we had a period when there was quite a lot of blue sky and sunshine; light snow at other times. It was rather mixed weather. Apparently areas to the north of our region got unexpected amounts of snowfall. So the forecast was off there, and it feels like the overnight was off a bit too. We were expecting quite a lot of snow and while Kagura is actually reporting 40cm, down in town there has been less than expected. This morning Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 10-20cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama earlier on was reporting 10cm. It is snowing now so hopefully we will get some more today. Heavier snow once again is there on the forecast for Sunday onwards for the first half of the coming week. Hopefully that forecast will turn out to be spot on! There's some windy conditions messing around with ski area operations this morning: Kagura: The Tashiro Area is closed for the day and Kagura is open up to the gondola at the start of the day. Naeba: The Number 2 gondola and top areas closed at the start of the day. Yuzawa Kogen: The top area is closed. GALA Yuzawa and other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Again, not the snow we thought we were going to get yesterday. Just a few cm really to add since yesterday morning and during the day yesterday. This morning we have cloudy skies over the region and it is due to be a mild day, perhaps even warming up to around 5C later this afternoon. It feels like we are going to get at least some blue skies and sunshine this morning. That exciting forecast of much snowfall from tomorrow through until around Wednesday is still there. If it's spot on, we're on for a lot. The very top Kagura Number 5 Romance lift (at Kagura) has usually been open from 9:30am until 12:00pm on weekdays and from 9:00am on weekends and holidays. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It feels like mid winter again! After the disappointing lack of snow over the last few days it did start snowing properly yesterday in the afternoon. Kagura aren't reporting a snowfall number (which often means it's big!), Maiko are saying up to 40cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 30cm early morning. Our measuring point has just measured 40cm at 8:30am. It's quite windy too, especially higher up, and because of that the following ski areas have announced that they will be closed for the day: Kagura GALA Yuzawa The Ropeway and top area of Yuzawa Kogen and the Prince Number 2 gondola at Naeba are also closed, so only the lower areas open at those ski areas. The snow is due to continue today, tomorrow and maybe Wednesday too. With any luck, less wind. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We start today with clear blue skies again. Yesterday it warmed up to around 9C in town and today we expect it to be warmer. Perhaps as high as 14C. (Yikes). It might get windy(er) later on today, but hopefully won't affect any ski operations. Tomorrow (which is a national holiday) won't be as warm, though looking further ahead there's still a somewhat worrying lack of snowmen and snowflakes lined up on all the forecasts. Anyway, it's a beautiful day to be outside. I think that's where we should be!
