- Zao Now: Saturday 30th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 280cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Well it really hit last night with snow storms being experienced across the western side of Japan. It was very windy last night so snow drifts make it seem like more has fallen. It is still chucking it down, however, the forecast has changed from heavy to light tonight so we must be getting it earlier than expected during the day. Higher up it is very windy and, with wind chill, reportedly around -25C. The Zao Ropeway lower section has now opened but the second stage is shut. We (and the other resorts) really needed this snow and it should be enough to cover those awful hard areas which had built up during the end of last week leading into the early part of the week paving the way for a really good day tomorrow when the sun is expected to be out. - Hakuba Now: Saturday 30th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 309cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba on this cold Saturday morning. Some rather different and odd looking snowfall numbers being reported (or should that be 'not reported'?) from around the ski areas this morning... I am guessing that wind might well be a factor there, but up to 40cm is being reported from upper areas. I sure like the sound of that. And you can of course see the numbers below. Since I started putting the report together there are more breaks in the cloud and it is actually sunny in places. If we do get continued snow during the day, we can probably expect the light snow that is lingering in higher areas this morning. Wind seems to be affecting upper lifts at Happo-one at the start of the day and the upper section of the Tsugaike Gondola is on hold. There were some wind related issues at 47 too but that has cleared. Forecasts show the wind getting less as the day goes on so hopefully they will be opening up. Other than that other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. ----- Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: - Kurobishi: 45cm - Usagidaira: 1cm - Nakiyama: 0cm Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 310cm - Usagidaira: 199cm - Nakiyama: 90cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall: - Summit: 20cm - Base: 10cm Official snow depth: - Top: 300cm - Base: 130cm Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: - Upper: 40cm - Iimori: 0cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 300cm - Iimori: 120cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: - Summit: 40cm - Base: 30cm Official snow depth: - Top: 295cm - Base: 180cm Tsugaike Kogen Reported snowfall: - Summit: 30cm Official snow depth: - Top: 305cm - Base: 105cm Hakuba Iwatake Official snow depth: - Top: 180cm - Base: 70cm Kashimayari Official snow depth: - 250cm Sanosaka Official snow depth: - Top: 160cm - Base: 80cm Hakuba Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Saturday 30th January 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 309cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 30 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 32cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 150cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 159cm reported on 18 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. Fresh snow! And a good 30cm or so of it too. That's what we like to see. Always a good number to report. ;) I'm writing this report now with the sun suddenly shining through all the cloud. Whether that will last or not is a different matter as cloud and snow is forecast for the day. Whatever, it is a cold morning and feel like the end of January. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 37cm Snowfall at base this season 890cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A return to snow after a dry spell. But not as much snow as we expected; under 40cm of pretty heavy stuff. Some wind, too, judging from a few drifts, but again not what the forescast predicted. The snow was lots of tiny crystals that might make for pretty slow skiing offpiste (and there is that old hard snow layer underneath that might make for trouble). It's stayed pretty cold, too, and that might last for a while, so the snow condition will probably only get better. - Niseko Now: Friday 29th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 772cm Posted on Friday 29th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have some fresh snow to report this morning. Not a huge amount - just a few cm and it is snowing as I write this report. Unfortunately the wind that we thought might come with the snow is happening... and as of 8:30am there's only a handful of lifts opening. Lower lifts at all four Niseko United areas are moving (and have been noted in the list below) but all of the top lifts and Gondola lifts are on hold. The forecasts now show consistent snowfall across the coming week so we should be seeing a reset. We just might have to put up with some unfriendly conditions as we move towards that! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data 6:25am. Cape Benkei:S11m/s. Cape Kamui:SSW2m/s, 992hPa, wave1.1m. On Higashi One cornice face and Kozan no Sawa side wall, wind blow snow has formed a 10cm hard slab which is prone to surface avalanches. Snow drifts formed pre dawn in front of the low pressure are hard, unstable and in the opposite direction than usual. They are expected to form a Jan 29 layer in the future. Be aware and cautious. The wind will temporarily drop during the morning and then pick up again more strongly. Peak gates will be closed. Please respect the patrol's decisions. Today it is better to stay on the groomers. From 7.30am the snowfall on the west side of the range will be heavy with poor visibility. Be careful hitting trees. Please wear your helmet. Accidents occur in bad weather. It is noticeably colder this morning with light snow falling in some areas... just cloudy at the moment in others; even some brighter areas. Kumanoyu are actually reporting 10cm of fresh snow down there; I can't report that much but good to know. Remains to be seen exactly what we get today. Areas expecting more snow this morning haven't got it yet and the winds haven't whipped up yet. But we are still expecting some of that, to some degree. - Niseko Now: Wednesday 27th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 769cm Posted on Wednesday 27th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It feels milder once again this morning. There is some very light snow falling at the moment. It's just a dusting+ really and there does seem to be a thin layer of snow on the mountain with 3-5cm being reported by the ski areas. That's certainly not enough to cover what we had yesterday, of course, but I'd say good for some thigh workouts. There is a moderate south westerly wind this morning and indeed at the start of the morning the top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri are on hold. As of 8:30am the top lift at Village is planning to open, as are all three Hanazono lifts. That may well change, of course. I think we will all be good and ready for a return to consistent snowfall and that still looks likely to be starting from tomorrow night. So we should be ending the month with new layers of fresh snow. It might get stormy, particularly around Friday. ----- I didn't pick up on this comment in the Avalanche Report yesterday: "Yesterday members of the 2030 Sapporo Olympic Bid Alpine Events Team were on the mountain to investigate possible course routes. To minimise any environmental impact of the events, plans are to use existing runs as much as possible." Interesting to see that. So perhaps they're not going to re-construct the Sapporo Olympic downhill courses on Mt Eniwa then? ;) www.snowjapanhistory.com ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data 6:25am. Cape Benkei:S9m/s. Above 1000m there is a southerly wind and wet snow at over 25m/s, especially on the Hanazono side, preceding the approaching low pressure system, with snow drift development on the north side of the range. After the low pressure system passes around 9am a westerly wind and snow will pick up and snow drift development will shift to the SE side of the range. From the 5am Moiwa observation snow drift development from the southerly wind was 40cm, rapidly formed with cornices fracture with little stimulation. At elevations below 800m, up to 30cm deep avalanches will easily occur, fracturing on jan 26 layer, on 40 deg creek side walls and under lift lines on the east side of the mountain (Hirafu/Hanazono side). The snow is wet and heavy, be careful. After the low pressure system has passed, dry surface avalanches will easily occur this afternoon with the new colder snowdrift growth expected to start around 10am. The avalanche risk will rise to high in the Niseko range from noon through at least tomorrow morning. Peak gate opening yet to be decided. Be aware of the snowfall transition. Make your actions match the conditions.
