- Hakuba Now: Tuesday 28th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 123cm Posted on Tuesday 28th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . This morning Cortina is reporting 40cm of fresh snow; 47/Goryu 10cm at base and 30cm up top; and Happo reporting up to 40cm at Usagidaira. Tsugake reporting 25cm. I can report 15cm at base. Some of you might have been seeing the news about lots of heavy snowfall in Japan. Not massive numbers here, but at the same time I am happy to see lots of areas of Japan getting their snow (though unlike Hakuba, some places would prefer that it did not snow!) Wind is affecting operations at Happo-one early morning today and the gondola is not up and running yet; also the top lifts at Goryu/47 are affected. Though it doesn't feel particularly windy down at base areas. It's quite bright this morning and even a bit of blue sky to see - it might even clear up more and be sunny later on. With the fresh snow on the mountains conditions should be really good. Heavy snow is due back Thursday and Friday. ----- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far [*upper areas] [As reported by official sources at time of this report] Hakuba Goryu: 198cm Hakuba 47: 205cm Hakuba Happo-one: 186cm Hakuba Cortina: 144cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 200cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: - Upper: 30cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 185cm - Toomi: 90cm Lift operations (planned): - Most lifts now operating Course openings (planned): - Most areas now open apart from part of Iimori Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall: - Summit: 30cm - Lower: 10cm Official snow depth: - Top: 180cm - Base: 65cm Planned lift & course openings: - All scheduled lifts open (Line D usually only opens when the gondola is not operating) - All but one small areas of official runs now open - Tree Riding Zones also open Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: - Kurobishi: 0cm (huh?) - Usagidaira: 40cm - Nakiyama: 10cm Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 118cm - Usagidaira: 114cm - Nakiyama: 65cm Planned lift operations: - Most of the main lifts are now open Planned course openings: - The upper and mid areas are all open - Some lower areas not yet available - It is possible to ski down to Nakiyama and Gondola base areas Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Official snow depth: - Mountain Side: 90cm - Village Side: 30cm Lift operations (planned): - View 2 - 4 Sen East - 5 Sen South - Gondola Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall: - Upper: 25cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 210cm - Lower: 90cm Lift operations: - Most lifts now open Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: - 140cm Lift operations (planned): - 5 lifts now operating Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall: - Summit: 40cm - Lower: 40cm Official snow depth: - Top: 210cm - Base: 130cm Lift operations: - All lifts apart from Number 5 pair open ----- Hakuba Sanosaka is not opening for the 2021-2022 season Hakuba Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Tuesday 28th December 2021 Total snowfall at base so far 123cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 14 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 36cm (18th December) November 2021 snowfall 29cm reported on 4 days December 2021 snowfall 94cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. - Nozawa Now: Tuesday 28th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 54cm Snowfall at base this season 202cm Posted on Tuesday 28th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Tons of fresh snowfall! This morning the ski area is reporting 50cm on Yamabiko, 32cm on Uenotaira, 40cm on Hikage and 20cm at Karasawa. That's from 3pm yesterday. Then there is the amount they were reporting yesterday during the day too, giving us a total of 77cm fresh at Yamabiko. Let's forget the numbers for a moment. You know, times like this are the kind of time when the superlatives can truly be brought out of the bag and used with confidence, and not as a hype-building convenience. (I always tire when I hear them used when conditions are simply average). With the snowfall over the last few days conditions are now truly deep up there. Some might even mutter those silly comments like there's too much. Obviously, that's a ridiculous comment and Naski will be having none of that. However much snow we have, we always want more! Skyline course is now indeed open and there's only a handful of areas of Nozawa that are not yet accessible - mostly the few courses off Skyline itself. Tomorrow we might get some sunshine and the snow should have eased off, so it should be a top day. Then there's more heavy snow on the forecast for the last two days of 2021. Ending the year in style. That sounds great to me. Information checked each morning. All subject to change. Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (total since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko (1615m): 77cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 53cm - Hikage (660m): 70cm - Nagasaka (616m): 70cm - Karasawa (563m): 30cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1615m): 210cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 190cm - Hikage (660m): 130cm - Nagasaka (616m): 120cm - Karasawa (563m): 110cm All courses apart from the following plan to be open: - Yunomine A - Mizunashi A - Kurokura - Kandahara - Mukobayashi - Hachiman - Kamoshika - Tanuki Planned operating lifts: - Most lifts are now scheduled to be open, subject to weather conditions. - The Utopia and Challenge pair lifts are normally rested on weekdays. - The Nagasaka quad lift is open for night skiing 30th Dec-1st Jan, 8th-9th Jan, 11th-12th Feb. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Geto Kogen region of Iwate New snowfall at base 61cm Snowfall at base this season 506cm Posted on Tuesday 28th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Geto Kogen. Tons of snowfall. The ski area this morning on their official site is reporting a whopping 100cm of new snow on the upper areas of the mountain. Down here it's just a piffling 60cm. ;) The taps are turned to on. I'm finding the new look to their official information somewhat difficult to interpret (and that's not a Japanese language problem; rather the info is unclear). I am not able to get out these last few days (unfortunately) but it seems like the tree run courses are not open. Perhaps they're just dealing with all this snow... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have another 13cm of fresh snowfall to add to my reports. And once again, it's 13cm of top quality snow. And once again, forecasts show consistent incoming snow. (I hope that isn't getting boring!) For the moment, it's quite a bright early morning. There's even blue sky over towards Mt Yotei, which itself is shrouded in cloud. I need to get my report up early today, so that's it for today and see you tomorrow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, heavy snowfall (15cm) around dawn. Moiwa800m: -12℃, NW8m/s, cornices developing, 20cm snowfall. Annupuri1100m: -13℃, W8m/s, cornices and snowdrifts developing, 20cm snowfall since before dawn. Coasatal data Benkei cape: NNW14m/s, Kamui cape: NNW12m/s, 1014hPa, 1.9m waves. A strong cold airmass is flowing in. The isobars have tightened and a strong snowfall started pre-dawn, making cornices and snowdrifts grow. Cornices are likely to largely fall, however looking at the snowfall transition, the avalanche hazard has been evaluated relatively low. Caution is always required when riding in steep open slopes and/or under cornices. Gate 8 and 11 are scheduled to open today. The light is weak and the slopes undulations are difficult to see even in the treeruns. Please be careful. Annupuri and Hirafu peak chairs are also scheduled to start tomorrow. The 24th annual Avalanche Meeting will be held from 6pm at the Niseko Chomin Center and Mr. Yuji Ishikawa, Chairman of the Hokkaido Mountaineering Association will come as guest. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 139cm Posted on Monday 27th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Another fine dump last night (but another 3 hours on the snowplough!). Viz remains poor and it is cold when you pick up speed, however, the snow of course is marvellous (but perhaps groomed in the morning in many places meaning the opportunity of great powder wasted). The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. 27cm of fresh snow - excellent quality too, I might add. It hasn't been too windy which is definitely a plus. It's very cold. I am writing this from Okushiga Kogen where it's really pounding down at the moment. Lifts are moving but you can hardly see them with very limited visibility. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 108cm Posted on Monday 27th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday the snow continued falling but the main thing I thought was... it was really cold! This morning is really cold too. Lots of cloud and some very light snow falling in places. Feels like it might actually be brightening up a bit but there's more snow on the forecast. This morning ski areas are reporting around another modest 10cm of fresh snow; Cortina wins the 'most snow' award by reporting 20cm on it's upper area. Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike hit the 2m of snowfall mark in the official numbers. Most of the ski areas are now mostly open, including Jigatake over in Omachi city (and part of the 'Hakuba Valley' promotions). Hakuba Sanosaka is sadly sitting the season out. - Nozawa Now: Monday 27th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 34cm Snowfall at base this season 148cm Posted on Monday 27th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Lots more snow to report along with cold conditions and it continues to fall this morning and due to continue into tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon the ski area was reporting 30cm on the top area and this morning there's an additional 38cm. That adds up to 68cm, which sounds fantastic, of course. I believe an investigation is in order! But. I'm a bit confused with the official snowfall numbers these last few days. When I checked yesterday morning, the ski area was reporting 20-30cm on the lower areas. But later in the day, that same number (the previous day to 8am yesterday number) had changed to 40-45cm. I'm really not sure what is going on there and will try to find out. I'll ask Naski. And I'm going to keep an eye on the numbers. I like to believe the official numbers and hope I'll continue to be able to do so. Nerd hat off, just lots of snow is of course great news. And conditions should be excellent. Visibility limited especially at the top of the mountain. I am hearing that the Skyline course should be open soon... though it doesn't seem to be tagged as open this morning. Information checked each morning. All subject to change. - Niseko Now: Monday 27th December 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 343cm Posted on Monday 27th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We had to put up with some pesky wind yesterday messing about with lift operations. Hopefully that will not be an issue today, and all lifts (that are scheduled to be open) look set to start the day. This morning I have another 14cm of fresh snowfall to report to you from base. My preferred daily fresh snowfall number is 20cm and above, but I'm just perhaps a little bit greedy... and when Niseko is on a roll consistency is one of the great features of this place. I'm sure there is probably that much higher up on the mountain. Anyway it is light snow this morning. Visibility is rather limited in places but variable. (Away from the mountain there is even a bit of blue sky though I doubt we'll get any of that here). As I have been saying these last few days, the forecast has consistent snowfall lined up into 2022. With todays snowfall I have measured 343cm this season so far. That's already about the same as the end of December last year, so looks like we are going to beat last year handily. Up to that point anyway. The general news of the world might well be rubbish, tiring and sigh-inducing, but at least we have our snow to bring smiles to faces! Hopefully for those of you reading from afar, just thinking about it might help too. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, 10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -13℃, 20cm new snow, snowdrifts developing slowly. Annupuri1100m: -13℃, N10m/s, 20cm new snow with snowdrift development in various places. Coastal data Benkei cape: N10m/s, Kamui cape WSW11m/s, 1010hPa, 1.8m waves. The wind has stayed strong in high elevation with the continuing wintry pressure distribution. Cornices and snowdrifts have slowly developed above 1000m and the avalanche risk is high around the Backbowl sidewalls (Kozan no Sawa), Anupuri bowl (O-sawa), Mikaeri-sawa and Higashi-One cornice slopes. Avoid dropping into suspicious slopes simultaneously and stay away from the bottom of the gullies and/or steep slopes. Many of the past accidents occurred when leeward, wind-affected snowdrift slabs that grew drastically during 20+m/s snowstorms collapsed and triggered a slide. The snow condition changes day by day. It might be safe today, but could completely change tomorrow. Always be vigilant of the hazards that may be present. Anemometers are being installed throughout the mountain and the data will eventually be available to see on a separate website. Peak gates will need some more time to open. Please respect the Niseko Rules. Beware of sudden weather changes and frostbites. Have a nice day. ----- Planned ski area operations: Monday 27th December 2021 The below information is manually checked each morning and believed to be correct at time of report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A very good morning with more snow falling last night than anticipated. For those who were able to get up early after any festivities last night, great powder awaited. Viz is poor though and definitely colder. Given COVID, most wear masks permanently now so no chance of freezing cheeks as you whiz down. More expected tonight so any staying past the weekend will enjoy another day if powder.
