- Niseko Now: Tuesday 8th March 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 1098cm Posted on Tuesday 8th March 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The sun is shining through my window as I write this. Outside there's quite a lot of blue sky and some cloud up there too. It's a nice morning and feels quite mild. Oh yes, some fresh snow too. Mustn't forget that! Ski areas are reporting around 10cm on the slopes. All lifts should be open today. Mild temps will be continuing for the next stretch of days and we're probably going to enjoy some calm conditions and sunny skies. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, light wind, 5cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -5.1℃, W3.1m/s, 10cm new snow, small snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -7.9℃, WNW4.5m/s. Hirafu 1250m: -10℃, light wind, 5cm new snow. Hirafu 1000m: -7.5℃, E1.9m/s, calm. Coastal data- Benkei cape: WNW9m/s, Kamui cape: WSW8m/s, 1014hPa, wave 0.8m. There is no atmospheric pressure gradient, the seas and mountains are calm. Light wind and snow overnight developed some snowdrifts on the leeward side. Snow surface above 1000m elevation is rough and hard due to the storm from the day before yesterday. Major snowdrifts development around 800m elevation causing some delay on lift operation and recovery of some facilities. From observation and weather data, the general avalanche risk has dropped but the gates opening is depending on lift operation. Please respect the patrol's decisions. Snowmelt is continuing due to the temperature rise during the day and snow bridges can easily collapse. There are new cracks on SW facing slopes under 700m elevation due to the major snowdrifts development. Avoid riding alone as falling from those snow bridges and cracks can be fatal. Bring short ropes. Do not hang around at the bottom of gullies and steep slopes. Avalanches come from above. The day is getting longer but it’s not spring yet. ----- Planned ski area operations: Tuesday 8th March 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. - Niseko Now: Monday 7th March 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 1090cm Posted on Monday 7th March 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Last night we had some very strong winds. I had to take a bit of a walk outside and the snow was being blown around big time. That probably accounts for the seemingly odd mixed-up snowfall numbers today as you can see below. And difficult to put a number on it. But my relatively shielded main measuring point has 7cm. There will be more in places. And less in others. It was snowing just lightly when I started writing this but right now it has got heavier. Really coming down just now and visibility has gone down too. That's not expected to last. Unfortunately, it's still windy enough at the start of the day to stop the top lifts at all four ski areas from opening. We can probably enjoy some sunshine and calmer conditions for a few days from tomorrow. ----- Just two more weeks of night skiing left in the Niseko region. Hirafu and Annupuri plan to be open in the daytime until 5th May, so there's two more months left there! Village and Hanazono plan to be open until 3rd April. Niseko Moiwa is also planning on being open until 3rd April. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -4℃, periodic strong winds, 20cm new snow, wind effected snow. Moiwa 800m: -6.4℃, NNW5.2m/s, 20cm new snow, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9.4℃, NNW7.7m/s, D:100cm L:250cm snowdrift development, strong gusts, good visibility. Hirafu 1250m: -10℃, N gusts to 15m/s, good visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -9.1℃, N12.1m/s, major leeward snowdrift development. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NNE9m/s, Kamui cape: E2m/s, 1011hPa, wave 2.5m. Stormy seas and a blizzard from the base to the top of the mountain raged until midnight. The isobars are starting to space apart and the weather is rapidly improving. There was major snowdrift development above 800m, measuring D:100-150cm in some locations. From observation and data, the general avalanche risk is starting to drop and all gates are expected to open. Please respect the patrol's decisions. The aeolian snow slabs have a high crystal density and are hard and heavy. During development and immediately after they break easily on weak layers causing slab avalanches. Also cornices break off further back than you would expect. An elevated avalanche risk continues above 1000m all day. It's still too early to get on high altitude open steep slopes. There is no safety in this sport. Have a good day. The war in Ukraine hurts my heart. ----- Planned ski area operations: Monday 7th March 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 1646cm Posted on Monday 7th March 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A real mixed day yesterday, with snow falling pretty much through the day, some wind, some sun. Variety. Not a whole lot of new snow, but there was enough yesterday to get gliders up above the ice underneath the fresh. There still is a noticeable layer of breakable wet snow under the new snow of the past two days; it seems to be hardening a bit but the warmer weather over the coming days will really change things a lot, I'd bet. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 613cm Posted on Monday 7th March 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday felt like a winters day once again. There was fresh snow and it continued snowing. By mid afternoon Hakuba 47 were reporting 20cm of snowfall. There is more snow to report this morning too. 10+cm of it around base since yesterday and more as you go higher. Nice weather this morning too. The sun is out, there's some blue sky and a bunch of white cloud around too. Atmospheric, I'd say. Having said that it seems wind is hanging around and messing with a few top lifts at the start of the day at Happo-one, 47 and Tsugaike. No snow on the forecasts now this week, or if so only very light, with things on the way to start warming up, particularly as we get to the weekend. Wind shouldn't be a problem either, so a nice time to be out. ----- Hakuba Cortina back to '12 hours' for their snowfall number this morning. Sorry if that's confusing, there's nowt I can do about it. I'll just be carefully to check whether it's 12 or 24 for each report. ----- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far [*upper areas] [As reported by official sources at time of this report] Hakuba Goryu: 939cm (not updated today) Hakuba 47: 915cm Hakuba Happo-one: 822cm Hakuba Cortina: 1117cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 899cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall this morning: - Upper: 20cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 410cm - Toomi: 190cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall this morning: - Summit: 20cm - Lower: 10cm Official snow depth: - Top: 420cm - Base: 190cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall this morning: - Kurobishi: 20cm - Riesen: 26cm - Usagidaira: 20cm - Nakiyama: 20cm Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 435cm - Usagidaira: 267cm - Nakiyama: 145cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall this morning: - Mountain Side: 10cm - Village Side: 10cm Official snow depth: - Mountain Side: 250cm - Village Side: 130cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall this morning: - Upper: 21cm (same as yesterday?) - Niseko Now: Sunday 6th March 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 1083cm Posted on Sunday 6th March 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It might have been windy but I do have some fresh snow to report since yesterday morning. 11cm of it. It's another relatively mild morning but thankfully the wind is not quite as pesky and we should be able to enjoy the whole mountain. Actually let me leave that in there and update you in real time.... top lifts at Hirafu and Village not opening as planned at 8:30am. Doh! Looks like it might just be a maintenance kind of delay thingy. Anyway, it's time for some Sunday morning toast. I hope you have a nice day. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 15cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, WSW2.1m/s, 15cm new snow, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9.5℃, WNW2.4m/s, 15cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: -9.1℃, SSW3.2m/s, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -10℃, snow data n/a, snowdrift development. Coastal data- Benkei cape: SW4m/s, Kamui cape: S9m/s, hPa n/a , wave 1.5m. The wind has dropped and it's calm in the middle of a wide low pressure trough. The trees below 900m are covered in rime from yesterday's low pressure snowfall. Above 800m, slab avalanches are likely to occur on steep slopes, gullies and creek sidewalls this morning due to the snowdrifts accumulated during the 18hr southerly blizzard yesterday. From observation, the snow is starting to stabilize and all gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols instructions and prepare before exiting the gates. The low pressure snowfall is made up of non uniform crystals and follows a different process of snowdrift development and stabilization than the more usual uniform snow slabs formed in a winter type pressure distribution. However if development is rapid both will break under external stimuli. To judge the danger it is better to pay attention to how the snow has fallen rather than the amount fallen. If the atmospheric pressure gradient increases again the avalanche risk will also increase. Today's snow is better than expected. Be careful in poor visibility and of a sudden change in weather. The snow is different everyday. Have a good day. ----- Planned ski area operations: Sunday 6th March 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources.
