The latest Zao Now report can be found here . After the harsh conditions of yesterday seeing a lot of people congregating at base stations, today is positively mild and peaceful. With a fresh batch of snow built up during the day and night, another powder day which can be enjoyed this time. The fog is retreating upwards and the sky is bright albeit overcast and large blue areas in the valley are trying to come in. It should, therefore be a patchy sunny day with winds at the top reducing. It is still very cold higher up though. This may be the last powder day of the season (or at least for the foreseeable future). Listen to this... the ski area was reporting 30cm of fresh snow up at Yamabiko yesterday afternoon... and another 35cm this morning. 65cm. Good at any time, excellent for March. Less down on lower areas but there is still a very respectable new layer covering the mountain. Light snow has been on and off early morning today, but it's due to be turned off by lunchtime. Back to weekdays so the Challenge pair and Utopia part are being rested. Otherwise all other lifts should be open as planned. Still remaining chilly today but a proper early spring warm up is coming later this week. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A real mixed day yesterday, with snow falling pretty much through the day, some wind, some sun. Variety. Not a whole lot of new snow, but there was enough yesterday to get gliders up above the ice underneath the fresh. There still is a noticeable layer of breakable wet snow under the new snow of the past two days; it seems to be hardening a bit but the warmer weather over the coming days will really change things a lot, I'd bet. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday felt like a winters day once again. There was fresh snow and it continued snowing. By mid afternoon Hakuba 47 were reporting 20cm of snowfall. There is more snow to report this morning too. 10+cm of it around base since yesterday and more as you go higher. Nice weather this morning too. The sun is out, there's some blue sky and a bunch of white cloud around too. Atmospheric, I'd say. Having said that it seems wind is hanging around and messing with a few top lifts at the start of the day at Happo-one, 47 and Tsugaike. No snow on the forecasts now this week, or if so only very light, with things on the way to start warming up, particularly as we get to the weekend. Wind shouldn't be a problem either, so a nice time to be out. ----- Hakuba Cortina back to '12 hours' for their snowfall number this morning. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Last night we had some very strong winds. I had to take a bit of a walk outside and the snow was being blown around big time. That probably accounts for the seemingly odd mixed-up snowfall numbers today as you can see below. And difficult to put a number on it. But my relatively shielded main measuring point has 7cm. There will be more in places. And less in others. It was snowing just lightly when I started writing this but right now it has got heavier. Really coming down just now and visibility has gone down too. That's not expected to last. Unfortunately, it's still windy enough at the start of the day to stop the top lifts at all four ski areas from opening. We can probably enjoy some sunshine and calmer conditions for a few days from tomorrow. ----- Just two more weeks of night skiing left in the Niseko region. Hirafu and Annupuri plan to be open in the daytime until 5th May, so there's two more months left there! Village and Hanazono plan to be open until 3rd April. Niseko Moiwa is also planning on being open until 3rd April. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -4℃, periodic strong winds, 20cm new snow, wind effected snow. Moiwa 800m: -6.4℃, NNW5.2m/s, 20cm new snow, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9.4℃, NNW7.7m/s, D:100cm L:250cm snowdrift development, strong gusts, good visibility. Hirafu 1250m: -10℃, N gusts to 15m/s, good visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -9.1℃, N12.1m/s, major leeward snowdrift development. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NNE9m/s, Kamui cape: E2m/s, 1011hPa, wave 2.5m. Stormy seas and a blizzard from the base to the top of the mountain raged until midnight. The isobars are starting to space apart and the weather is rapidly improving. There was major snowdrift development above 800m, measuring D:100-150cm in some locations. From observation and data, the general avalanche risk is starting to drop and all gates are expected to open. Please respect the patrol's decisions. The aeolian snow slabs have a high crystal density and are hard and heavy. During development and immediately after they break easily on weak layers causing slab avalanches. Also cornices break off further back than you would expect. An elevated avalanche risk continues above 1000m all day. It's still too early to get on high altitude open steep slopes. There is no safety in this sport. Have a good day. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A significant snowfall last night especially higher but good also lower. Unfortunately viz is right down although you can just about see 2m of the slope in front to ride. Higher up it can be tricky in distinguishing trails which have bends in them. There are strong winds around and especially roaring up Uwanodai where it can be a bit confusing seeing snow from the slope blowing up at you as if you were moving even when not. There is supposed to be a bit of sun this morning but will need to wait and see. The wind however is likely to intensify. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It feels colder this morning! And later in the day wet turned into snow overnight. It's not often that lower areas report more snow than the top, but that's what we have today (see the list below). I see more too. Curious. Whatever, Naski is out in it and still has a smiler on their face. You can always rely on Naski. Visibility is pretty low out there even at base as of 8:30am and the snow is coming down. Still lifts appear to be opening as planned for those who would like to brave these conditions. Make sure you know where you're going - and stick with friends... would be my advice. Tomorrow I might have some winter-like Nozawa-rashi numbers to report, which would of course be great. It will be calmer and clearer too, so good for folks who want to enjoy it. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The dust has moved on to the east, some snow fell — but not much. We were hoping for a nice fall of fresh stuff to cover up the dust and maybe start getting ready of the crust on the surface of the snow. But we haven't gotten that much yet, and the sun keeps popping out, so it doesn't look like a powder day in Myoko today. For the backcountry people, it's that transitional period now, isn't it? It would be great to have a nice heavy snowfall, even if it's heavy spring snow, but it would also be nice for the snow to just settle down and firm up so we could get some good spring skiing in. But let's not be negative! There's a ton of snow on the hill, and lots of time left to enjoy it. There's always something to do on the snow, whatever the condition, right? The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Yesterday we worried about wind again. But hey, how about this?! There's still some wind but it feels colder again and feels like a winter morning. Hakuba Goryu this morning win the 'most reported snowfall' - they are claiming 40cm of fresh snow on their upper slopes. I do like the sound of that. Other numbers coming in aren't as big but generally agree on there being 20-30cm on the mountainsides. Nice. And I have measured 17cm on the ground too. It is still snowing and more is due through the day today. If we get some sun tomorrow morning like forecasts show, tomorrow should be a very good time to be here. Well, today is too, of course, if you like being out there in the snow!
