The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is feeling much colder this morning, I am pleased to report. Niseko Village are reporting -16C up top there. Brrrr. So yes, temperatures are back to more like how we expect them, and there has also been a nice layer of fresh snow. I have measured 15cm, with most of that coming while most of us were sleeping. There might be more than that higher up and while I'm not sure it will be enough for a proper reset, further snow is forecast over these last few days of 2022. It is snowing now. Is that that chance of some sun on New Years Eve I see? At the start of the day, the gondola lifts at Village and Annupuri are on hold due to wind. Interestingly, those two ski areas are also showing their top lifts (Wonderland and Jumbo Number 4) as 'on hold' this morning. I am not sure why, but perhaps their opening is imminent? --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5℃, 15cm snowfall in 12hs, strong west wind, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -8.2℃, WSW8.7m/s, 20cm snowfall from midnight, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -9℃, snowstorm, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Hanazono Hirafu: -10℃, ESE 0.5m/s, 10cm snowfall. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.4℃, NW2.9m/s, Coastal data: Benkei cape NW23m/s, Kamui cape WSW15m/s, 1012hPa, 1.6m waves. The isobars got tighter under the wintery pressure system from midnight, strong snow and wind are blowing over the west side of the mountain range. Looking at snow cat's fracture test operated at 800m elevation at Moiwa, the layer between newly formed 30cm snowdrifts and 80cm wet snow can easily fracture. According to the weather data and snowfall transition, the avalanche risk is high on the cornice and knoll slopes over 900m elevation throughout the afternoon. The gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow the patrols instructions. The snow under the 800m elevation and in the tree runs is in good condition. Skiing and snowboarding are inherently dangerous sports. Viz is naturally better lower down which is also less crowded. That said, there really is no sense of too many people yet, however, the buses are coming in. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's some fresh snow on the ground this morning and it looks like there's up to 20cm at higher elevations. Limited visibility in all but lower areas at the start of the day. I can just about see the shape of the sun behind some clouds, though light snow is forecast for the day. Today is the start of the New Year holidays for many people and it is traditionally a busy time of the season. Expect more people to be around over the next few days. ----- Apart from my observed snowfall number every morning, all of the other numbers in this report are numbers that are being reported by ski areas themselves. I check them each morning and I update them on the list below. It can certainly be somewhat frustrating that even the same ski area can put out two seemingly inconsistent numbers on the same day from the same place. For example, Happo-one this morning are reporting 15cm of new snowfall at Usagidaira (1,400m) on their website. They are also reporting 20cm from the top of the Riesen quad lift, at the same 1,400m elevation. I have probably said this before but it's just best not to spend too much energy worrying over these details. Take a step back and look at the wider and more general picture. Obviously, I take my own snowfall measurements very seriously. But again, someone not far from me might well see different things. And we might both be 'correct'. (They probably are not taking the actual measurement as seriously as me, though). There was the update I made yesterday, and there's more going on today with a bunch of ski runs opening from this afternoon - including Schneider, Challenge, Challenge 39, Utopia and Rinkan. That will mean that from this afternoon you should be able to ski or snowboard back down to base (rather than take a gondola). There has been 30cm or more of fresh snow on upper areas of the ski areas since yesterday. The tree branches are looking loaded this morning. (Not so much down in lower areas, more like 5-10cm). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is still curiously not as cold as we expect it to be. I believe it is raining in places not too far away from us, just a bit lower down in town, and we can do well to avoid that. (That Hirafu webcam image below looks... kind of wet, doesn't it?) But anyway, it has been snowing lightly outside my place as I write this, and there is snow to report since yesterday morning. It has been on and off with the most yesterday morning and late last night. My measurement is 15cm. Seems like there might have been more on the north side of the mountain. Various forecasts seem to indicate a return to colder conditions from around later Wednesday and still a chance of some clearer skies at times before then. I'm guessing conditions might be a bit heavy before then. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: +1℃, 15cm wet snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -2℃, westerly 8m/s, 25cm snowfall in 12h with snowdrifts. Annupuri 1000m: -3℃, westerly 10m/s, bad visibility, 30cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Coastal data: Benkei cape NE11m/s, Kamui cape ENE5m/s, 1007 hPa, 3.5m waves. Warm air snowfall continues with rain below 300m elevation. The freezing level lies around 700m and wet new snow accumulated with snowdrift development above 800m. Niseko Village Gate11, Moiwa Gate 6 will open today. Follow the ski patrol’s instructions when stepping out of bounds. Snowpack is still low along the creek line, but is in pretty good shape. Carefully pick your route. It is highly recommended to wear a helmet and an avalanche beacon. The new snowdrifts formed by the past few days’ NE wind above 1100m are still unstable. Make sure to anchor yourself with a rope when conducting pit-checks and rutschblock test. The avalanche risk remains very high at the Backbowl’s high sidewalls. Refrain from accessing from Goshiki side. Avalanches occur when the conditions align and does not depend on the amount of snowfall. They are natural phenomena and won’t be an accident as long as nobody is in its path. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning. Another modest amount of snow this morning. 5cm around base and apparently 10cm higher up. It is windy and it has been blowing the snow around making it difficult to know what has exactly fallen. Cloud and light snow forecast for today but it will remain windy. Hopefully lifts will be able to move as planned, but I am thinking there is a chance that might not be the case. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . After so many days it feels strange to have no snow falling. Light falls may come during the day but nothing meaningful. It is foggy on the mountain with variable visibility higher up, however, below the mountain are blue skies. It should, therefore, clear up a bit with a good potential for sunny patches. We'll see.
