- Nozawa Now: Saturday 31st December 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 101cm Posted on Saturday 31st December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The ski area is reporting 10-11cm of fresh snow on upper areas since yesterday, with just a few cm of that coming in overnight. Just a bit of new snow down at lower levels. It's cloudy this morning with somewhat limited visibility on the top of the mountain, though some blue sky visible in some areas. So it's New Year's Eve and so special night skiing and New Years Countdown tonight. Night skiing is until 11:30pm with the countdown event and fireworks from midnight. I'm guessing that Naski will be turning up to celebrate. Look out for that always-friendly and smiley bright green vegetable! (You can see Naski on the third photo this morning; usually turns up for work there just after 8am). There's some heavy snow on the forecasts over the first few days of 2023. Sounds like a good way to start! Have fun, take care and see you in the new year. - Hakuba Now: Saturday 31st December 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 164cm Posted on Saturday 31st December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful morning here in Hakuba. Hakubatastic, even. Just look at those mountains. Stunning. Cold too. A fine afternoon yesterday as the early morning clouds parted to some degree. We still had a fair amount of clouds around, but some blue sky too. No snowfall is being reported by ski areas overnight. And here we are on this last day of the year with mostly clear blue skies. There will be various celebrations going on tonight. I bet a few of you might even have a drink or two. Take care on the slopes and in the bars, and be ready for more fresh snow in the new year. As promised I have made some changes to the list this morning. I'm starting up the reporting of the 'total snowfall accumulation' numbers that Hakuba Valley put out. (Please take them for what they are; step back, look at the big picture rather than the minute detail. I say this because at times they don't seem to change and also it is unclear when exactly they started. And how can the total snowfall be less than the current snow depth at Happo-one?!, etc. Hmmm). As you probably know, Hakuba Sanosaka ski area has re-opened this season with two lifts operating. They are calling themselves White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka this season. That name change has been reflected on the new list. --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated every morning.] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 197cm Hakuba 47: 185cm Hakuba Happo-one: 187cm Hakuba Cortina: 162cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 195cm --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 0cm (Alps Daira) Official snow depth: Upper: 200cm Toomi: 100cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall: Upper: 0cm Base: 0cm Official snow depth: Top: 195cm Base: 105cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall (24 hours): Summit: 0cm Lower: 0cm Official snow depth: 175cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 0cm Usagidaira: 0cm Top of Riesen quad: 0cm (social media) Nakiyama: 0cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 210cm Usagidaira: 140cm Nakiyama: 75cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 0cm Village Side: 0cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 100cm Village Side: 30cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 165cm Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Official snow depth: 80cm Jigatake Official snow depth: 50cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall: Upper: 0cm Official snow depth: Upper: 162cm Lower: 62cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 90cm --------------- Night skiing Floodlit night skiing is available at these ski areas during the 2022-2023 season (subject to change) ABLE Hakuba Goryu: daily Hakuba Cortina: on Saturdays in January and February; daily from 29th December to 3rd January; 8th January Jigatake: daily until 3rd January; on Fridays and Saturdays in January and February (until 25th February); 8th January; 22nd February Hakuba Now 2022-2023 season Data as Saturday 31st December 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 164cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 17 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 29cm (24th December) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 164cm reported on 17 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. - Niseko Now: Friday 30th December 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 342cm Posted on Friday 30th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. We have had another steady on-off delivery of snow since yesterday and I have just measured 19cm since my last report. At the moment there is still a lot of clouds around, but there is also some blue sky and it is quite bright in places. Then again, it is also snowing lightly in places. Generally some very fine conditions to be out there, I'd say. There might not be much more in terms of new cm during the day today and tomorrow, with more due to be falling as we get into the New Year. This morning the top lifts at Hirafu (King 4) and Village (Wonderland) and Annupuri (Jumbo Number 4) are all scheduled to be open. Hurray! (Though we might have to wait longer for gates...) ----- This is not Niseko-related, but have you ever heard of a ski area called Windsor Snow Village? It's a small ski area about 50km south of here, near Lake Toya and part of the posh hotel resort that hosted the G8 Summit in 2008. They don't seem to publicise themselves (as a ski area), but apparently, anyone can use it, so you don't need to be a guest at the hotel. I wasn't aware that their two ski lifts were once part of a larger ski area called Snow Park Toya. If you are interested in that story, there's more here. While we're on that subject, I do recommend looking through the individual ski area pages in the cunningly named Ski Areas section of this site. I believe all introductions have been rewritten over the last six months, and a lot of new information has been added in 2022. There are certainly some interesting stories to discover. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5℃, light winds, 20cm new snow in last 12hrs, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7.6℃, WSW10.0m/s, 20cm new snow, slow snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -9.3℃, SSW4.6m/s, 30cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hanazono Hirafu 1000m: -10.5℃, W1.5m/s, 10cm new snow. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.9℃, NNW4.5m/s. The isobar spacing is getting wider and the wind is starting to drop. Seas are still high though. From observations and tests, the avalanche risk is decreasing, however cornices above 800m will still easily collapse. Snow in the trees is good. Above 1000m, snow drift consolidation is delayed on the upper part of the steep open slopes and around knolls. The avalanche risk will continue in these areas. Stay out of Back Bowl and off Osawa side wall this morning. Top lifts are expected to operate, however gates above 1000m are not open yet. Do not duck ropes to ride outside the resort areas. Today is much better than yesterday. Watch your speed and hitting a tree. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Friday 30th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. It's still falling gently at the moment; love to see the killer fall we had one year ago, with cars all over the road in front of my location here below Kanko. The ski area is reporting 15-24cm across the mountain and I have measured 21cm. Visibility might be limited this morning but the fresh snow should be fun. There is only a handful of runs not yet open, which is great to see. From today through Monday, lifts are opening 30 minutes early. So that's an 8am start for the gondolas and base lifts. Light snow is forecast for the day today. We might get some clearer skies on New Years Eve and New Years Day, but it will be back to snow beyond that. * Sorry, I mis-spelt Kandahar in the report yesterday. Still not one of the massive loads that we often get here, with the ski area itself reporting 10cm. I measured a bit more than that. As I write this visibility is fairly decent with light snow falling and that is pretty much what is forecast for the day. It looks like tomorrow and the first day of 2023 will be calm with perhaps some sun, before more snow coming our way as we head into Monday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 162cm Posted on Friday 30th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A cold day yesterday with limited visibility for a large part and snow falling. More steady snowfall to report since yesterday with ski areas talking of up to 15cm of fresh on upper slopes. It's 5+cm down at base since my last report. We aren't expecting much cm of snow over the next couple of days and maybe some sun. It is just snowing lightly in places at the moment but it feels like it might just clear up somewhat. The Grat quad lift at Happo-one is scheduled to be open from 12:00pm today. The official snow depth at a few ski areas is now above 2m. The New Year should be bringing more fresh snow. All good. More adjustments coming to the report tomorrow as ski areas are all now either fully open or nearly at that point. - Niseko Now: Thursday 29th December 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 323cm Posted on Thursday 29th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is feeling much colder this morning, I am pleased to report. Niseko Village are reporting -16C up top there. Brrrr. So yes, temperatures are back to more like how we expect them, and there has also been a nice layer of fresh snow. I have measured 15cm, with most of that coming while most of us were sleeping. There might be more than that higher up and while I'm not sure it will be enough for a proper reset, further snow is forecast over these last few days of 2022. It is snowing now. Is that that chance of some sun on New Years Eve I see? At the start of the day, the gondola lifts at Village and Annupuri are on hold due to wind. Interestingly, those two ski areas are also showing their top lifts (Wonderland and Jumbo Number 4) as 'on hold' this morning. I am not sure why, but perhaps their opening is imminent? --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5℃, 15cm snowfall in 12hs, strong west wind, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -8.2℃, WSW8.7m/s, 20cm snowfall from midnight, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -9℃, snowstorm, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Hanazono Hirafu: -10℃, ESE 0.5m/s, 10cm snowfall. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.4℃, NW2.9m/s, Coastal data: Benkei cape NW23m/s, Kamui cape WSW15m/s, 1012hPa, 1.6m waves. The isobars got tighter under the wintery pressure system from midnight, strong snow and wind are blowing over the west side of the mountain range. Looking at snow cat's fracture test operated at 800m elevation at Moiwa, the layer between newly formed 30cm snowdrifts and 80cm wet snow can easily fracture. According to the weather data and snowfall transition, the avalanche risk is high on the cornice and knoll slopes over 900m elevation throughout the afternoon. The gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow the patrols instructions. The snow under the 800m elevation and in the tree runs is in good condition. Skiing and snowboarding are inherently dangerous sports. There are full of hidden dangers including avalanches in the winter mountains. This information is provided for the safety of all resort users. Please respect the Niseko Rules. Beware of frostbites. --------------- Ski area information for Thursday 29th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
