The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The rain finally stopped in the wee hours of the morning turning into snow an d a literal light dusting. Th trees are slightly whiter again. It is snowing very lightly at the moment but expect it to increase slightly to provide a couple of cms. Same tomorrow but nothing significant until Friday. At least temps are now below zero. There is usual fog from upper Uwanodai but you can see where you're going It is not nice from resort level upwards. With the sudden drop in temperature, the slopes are very hard with ice pebbles and rocks strewn about by last night's piste bashers when the snow was soft. The only place I found remotely enjoyable was Ryuzan (see pic) which is slightly better and you can catch the World Cup Jump in its readiness for tonight's final. Probably the best overall will be the Omori slopes although the top bit has bad patches as it is lower down. (Note: actual reported snowfall 0.5cm... rounded up for the report as 0.5 is not possible). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After that beautiful clear start yesterday, by lunchtime it was starting to get cloudy and overcast. We did get some rain overnight, but it isn't raining now. Just very cloudy (and foggy in places early morning). It is going to be another warm day though, with a chance of spots of rain during the day. Hopefully not more than that. OK so I'm ready for a return to colder temps and fresh snow now. Tomorrow will be colder, still above zero, and then Monday colder still. And there should be some snow in the mix there too, though forecasts don't show potential big numbers. We have what we have, so I am going to go and make the most of it! A little snow yesterday morning, and then it did clear up to give us some nice sunshine and rare visual evidence that Mt Yotei does indeed exist! This morning it is snowing lightly again but generally just kind of cloudy. We still should expect a few days of milder conditions and sunshine tomorrow and Friday. All being well, by Sunday it will be back to more January-appropriate coldness. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5C, 10cm new snow to dawn, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.7C, WSW5.4m/s, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development settling after 24hrs of growth . Annupuri 1100m: -7.6C, W9.9m/s, strong winds, continued snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -6.7C, WNW5.4m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -7.8C, SE3.2m/s. Hanazono 3 Base: -4.0C, NNE3.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW15m/s, Kamui Cape SW14m/s, 1017hPa, 1.7m waves. The isobars are starting to widen, however at 1000m on the west side (Niseko Town) a strong 20m/s wind and snow is blowing with continued snowdrift development. Snowdrifts below 900m are starting to stabilise with winds around 10m/s. Above 600m snow in the trees is reset with heavy wind blown snow. Conditions are a bit tricky though, take care not to hit a tree. Do not hang around in the valley bottom of Kozan no Sawa or Osawa. Do not drop into HigashiOne cornice face without care. An avalanche at 1000m will clean out the valley below. Do not duck Mizuno no Sawa ropes and get into Haru noTaki area. From snowfall data, risk is very high. Even if the top lifts run, avoid riding steep open slopes above the treeline today. There is no safety guarantee in this sport. Beacon? Helmet? Use them! (The ski area is reporting 43cm of snow in upper areas!) We start today with fine weather. There is cloud and clearer at times and that is what is expected, with temps possibly rising slightly above zero this afternoon. A chance of light rain - hopefully snow - tonight. We are still expecting temps to rise and get milder over the next several days. It might rain on Saturday. Not a great story to tell, but hopefully it will get colder again quickly after that. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The fog is presently down low - upper Uwanodai, Sunset, Nakamori, Yokokura, Hyakymannin. (See pic of upper Sunset.) Higher up viz quality comes and goes but most of the time you can see the terrain in front. Slopes are well-groomed with a soft upper layer. Some areas have a bit of a crunch but the upper layer dampens it. A great day for carving. The fog should clear later in the day so do the lower areas first. It was a cold start to the day, it will warm up a little during the day with the sun. Not too much. More sun and milder conditions due tomorrow. By the way, I'm not posting the numbers that (I think) the ski area posted yesterday and this morning as they seem... really kind of odd. At the time of me writing my report anyway. There's some nice fresh snow out there from yesterday, though, and that's what matters. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's a lovely calm morning here, in contrast to the conditions yesterday. There should be some excellent conditions this morning too. It has been a cold start and while it will get milder, not too much today. Just one note: Okushiga Kogen are reporting 40+cm (60cm in places) of snow in that last batch. I like the sound of that. Going to be warmer from tomorrow, though after the upcoming blip we should be back to winter Sunday or Monday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 15cm or so of snowfall to report this morning since yesterday. It is snowing still as I put this report together, but it is again quite bright with a hint of light blue in places. (It feels like we might get to see some sun. Or maybe not!) Beyond today there will likely be several days of mostly clearer weather conditions and it is also due to get milder, especially on Friday. I heard on the news that it might get to almost 20C in Tokyo on Saturday. Obviously Tokyo is a long way from here, but it does look like Japan in general is going to be getting positively toasty for a few days late week. Up here it's set to get colder again from later Saturday. At least temporarily, I'm taking the 'new snowfall reported by ski area' numbers for the Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri lists below the. They just don't seem to be updating that number (especially Village), even when there is clearly new snowfall across the mountain (like today). That is potentially confusing. As someone looking at these every day and wanting to report good information to you, it is somewhat frustrating. I'll continue to monitor that situation and may bring them back if/when they report. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5C, 20cm new snow, mild blizzard. Moiwa 800m: -8.1C, WNW12.8m/s, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -11.1C, WNW8.1m/s, unstable snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -9.7C, N8.6m/s, Hanazono 1000m: -10.6C, NNE12.5m/s. Hanazono 3 Base: -8.1℃, N5.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape N15m/s, Kamui Cape N17m/s, 1013hPa, 2.8m waves. The isobars are tight and a strong N wind is up. At 600m in the trees, reset and snowdrifts from wind and blown snow. Around 800m snowdrift growth is continuing but still stable, above 1000m there is rapid accumulations of snow. From observation and tests the avalanche risk above 900m is high. On Back Bowl sidewall, the N wind has caused unstable wind slab to form. If we get an avalanche around 1000m here it will clean the valley out. Don't go into the valley bottom. Cornices are weak at all elevations and could easily collapse. Also on steep open leeward slopes, 40cm surface avalanches are likely to occur. To avoid avalanches, pay attention to how the snow falls. Accidents often occur during times of wind and snow. Blizzard snow is heavy, loose and slow. And also prone to deadly avalanches.
