The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have another 7cm of snow to report to you this morning after a day of cloud, light snow and some blue sky too. I also have some blue skies and sunshine to report early this morning. I haven't been able to do much of that this season so far. Relatively mild temps too - right now around Hirafu base it is slightly under 0C and the sun might push that a few more above zero during the day. Temps should be dropping again from later tomorrow. Anyway, it is a fine morning and the ski areas should all be open as planned. Let's enjoying. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2C, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -3.5C, WSW4.0m/s, 10cm new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -6.0C, W8.0m/s. Mizuno no Sawa top: -4.8C, WNW4.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -5.8C, SSE3.2m/s. Hanazono#3: -2.5C, WNW5.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW13m/s, Kamui Cape: SW13m/s, 1018hPa, 1.0m waves. Warm air is flowing into the Sea of Japan with moderate seas and a W wind. Cold air is still around above 1000m causing thick fog where it hits the lower level warm air. Visibility is good below 800m though. From observations and data the snow has stabilised and the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Also from observations and snowfall data expect Feb 18 layer to be significant in the future snowpack. There are many dangers in the mountains in winter, but if you are careful accidents can be avoided. Avalanches are a natural occurrence and only become accidents when people are involved. Don't be the cause of an avalanche and don't be the one who is in the bottom of a gully when an avalanche comes. Is your beacon on? The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It feels milder this morning, though it is still -3C. I have measured another 9cm of snowfall since yesterday morning and, guess what, it is snowing. Lightly for the moment. Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting up to 20cm on the mountain. I was just looking at our snowfall numbers for the season, as well as those for other regions of Japan (on the other Now reports). The one thing that stood out to me is just how consistent the snowfall here in Niseko is. Just look at the graph lower down this page! I have said it before, but while we might not get the sometimes-bonkers massive snowfall numbers that some regions get on some days, we get that real consistency. I would like to experience the madness one day, but I think I'll take the consistency. Especially with the quality of snow that we usually get here. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5C, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -5.7C, WSW2.8m/s, 10cm new snow, calm. Although the isobars are widely spaced, there is strong winds at sea and above 1100m. About 15cm of light snow has accumulated in the trees, not enough for a full reset though. From the morning's observation and data, the general avalanche is low. Peak gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before going out of bounds. The winter mountains are always dangerous, when outside the ski area always consider your decisions carefully. To avoid avalanches, cross open steep slopes and valleys one at a time, dont traverse steep cornice slopes and don't stop or wait in gullies. You can expect poor visibility at times so always know your location. Ride carefully because cracks and holes are opening up and are hard to see from above. Accidents can be prevented with care. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here My mind just wouldn't settle down last night and the noisy winds outside didn't help me get a good nights sleep. (Nothing some good toast won't fix). It is another cold morning, currently -9C, and I have another 10cm of snow to report. Niseko Village are reporting a temp of -16C up top (and 5cm of fresh snow). Hanazono are reporting up to 20cm snowfall this morning. Wind doesn't seem to be a particular nuisance at the moment so ski areas and gates should be opening as planned. Tomorrow and Saturday probably will be milder, hopefully not by too much. But, without wanting to sound boring, the snow clouds probably won't ever be far away. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8C, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -11.2℃, 15cm new snow, small snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -13.9C, WNW6.8m/s, small snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -11.2C, NNW2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -13.8C, NNE1.1m/s, average 10cm light crystal snow. Hanazono#3: -10.6C, N5.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW13m/s, Kamui Cape WSW8m/s, 1025hPa, 1.4m waves. Mountains are calm under the weak wintery pressure distribution. Slops are reset with light crystal snow. From the observation, test, and weather data, general avalanche risk is low. Wind crusts have developed on the HigashiOne and Kozan no Sawa sidewall due to the NE wind from the day before, beware of shallow surface avalanches on the slopes over 40 degrees, expect to slide a long way at high speed which can be triggered by falling or rider stimulation. New snow is thin and you will still hit the bottom, but some pockets of good snow can be found in the trees. Do not stimulate the knolls and steep open slopes. Remember there are people riding underneath you. Do not stay in the gullies. Avalanche risk always exists but most of the accidents can be prevented if we are careful. All the peak gates will be open. Always use gates to go outbounds. Beware of sudden weather change. Have you switched your beacon on? We had some roads below Akakan close yesterday because of deep snow and people trying to make the ascent to the resort in non-4WD vehicles. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . There is still some light snow falling still, but it is due to ease off today with the chance of some sun later. No sign of that just yet and some early morning limited visibility on the top of the mountain. The ski area has reported over 50cm snowfall since yesterday and there has been a lot down to base too. It has certainly been a very good few days of snowfall and conditions should be top draw. From tomorrow (maybe sooner), we will be getting some clearer weather to enjoy it all. Lovely. It is keeping cold and snow conditions should remain very good. It might get a little milder from tomorrow for a few days, but hopefully not too much. All tree run courses should be open. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just a short while ago it was snowing heavily outside my place, though that has eased off considerably now. Webcams are all showing snow falling around the mountain and variable visibility this morning, and even a hint of sun again in places. I'd say generally we have variable weather conditions again this morning. Even if we get clearer skies at times, snow showers probably won't be far away over the coming days. (And at the same time really heavy snow not expected). Oh yes... another 10cm of snowfall since yesterday. It is a cold morning and right now my thermometer outside reads -9C. (As I am about to post this report, I have got some sun shining through my window again). --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -10C, light wind, major snowdrift development, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -13.2C, NW7.4m/s, major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -16.3C, NNW6.6m/s, light wind, major snow drift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -14.9C, NNE10.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -16.1C, NNE10.7m/s. Hanazono#3: -13.4C, NNE4.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NE7m/s, Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1019hPa, 1.9m waves. A strong NE wind and snow yesterday afternoon and into the night caused heavy snowdrift development at all elevations. Above 700m the slopes are heavily affected by the wind with slopes re-shaped and inter mixed wind crust and snowdrifts. The snow drifted into the valleys is heavy and likely to catch an edge. From observation and tests the avalanche risk above 1000m is high. Gates 2 and 3 will be closed, other gates yet to be decided. Do not duck ropes to go out of bounds. The avalanche risk on Kozan no Sawa sidewall and Osawa cornice slope is high. NE snow storms generally create heavy poorly bonded slabs. From past records if these slabs let go, it's going to be big. Even at low altitudes below 800m, do not wait in the valley bottoms. The wind is expected to drop temporarily, but if the isobars tighten up the wind and snow will pick up again. Take action that fits the situation. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A bit hard to read how today will turn out. It just stopped snowing, however, it is supposed to be due back during the day. It is also supposed to be overcast, however, there are blue patches appearing and then disappearing around the base and beyond. Although there is fog higher up, this, at the moment, is only affecting long range visibility. Wind is likely to pick up later. So, there you have it - a bit of everything! Just get out and enjoy the new covering as there won't be any more until Sunday morning when quite a bit is expected.
