The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . So we have had around 10cm of snow down at base since yesterday morning. Half of that during the day yesterday and half overnight. (Bit on the wet side, rather than the delightfully light and fluffy kind). Saturday morning starts with cloudy skies, with a few hints of blue sky, and some light snow still apparently falling on upper areas. There is a fair chance that the clouds will clear during the day today. It is just under +1C at the moment. Forecasts for tomorrow still point to a day of sunshine. As always, Naski is looking bright and cheerful this morning. And particularly bright and green. I think he/she/they/(what's the pronoun for a skiing vegetable?) is excited about the prospect of snow Monday through Wednesday! The ski area reported numbers in the report this morning seem low, and I expect there to be considerably more out there than the numbers suggest. Hakuba 47 were indeed reporting 15-20cm yesterday afternoon and that sounds about right to me. Kurobishi 0cm and Nakiyama 10cm? I must admit, I'm a bit confused, but I have learnt that sometimes it is best not to overthink. (Otherwise my head would implode). Perhaps I need to go out and investigate! Anyway, yes, this morning there is a bank of cloud around the mountains, but there's some fine looking blue sky above it. At the start of the day, some ski areas are shrouded in cloud, while others have sun shining down on them - so varied visibility out there. After the disruption to lifts yesterday morning, it is much calmer this morning and we start the day with ski areas opening as planned. It is an overcast morning and kind of dull looking and that is the weather we are expecting for the day. Light snow is actually falling in some places, but it is very light. Right now it is around -9C to -10C at base. Oh yes, and some new snow - I have measured . From the Avalanche Report and what Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting, sounds like we might have up to 15-20cm of fresh snow in places on the mountain. We might get to see the sun for part of tomorrow and then more snow is due on Sunday. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -7C, 20cm new snow in last 12hrs, calm. Moiwa800m: -10.3C, W0.7m/s, major cornice and snowdrift development, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -13.6C, W4.2m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -12.4C, N0.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -13.3C, N1.0m/s. Hanazono#3: -10.1C, NNE1.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW4m/s, Kamui cape SW4m/s, 1028hPa, 1.0m waves. The seas and mountains are calm under a high pressure system. There is major snowdrift and cornice development on leeward slopes above 800m due to the wind and snow yesterday. From observation and tests, snowdrifts are starting to stabilise, however cat operator impact tests show a heavy wind slab,45cm at the top to 150cm at the bottom, breaking instantly over wide areas. The avalanche risk remains high on SE facing knolls and cornice slopes. Avoid riding Kozan no Sawa sidewall, Osawa cornice slope around 1000m and the HigashiOne cornice slope today. Also avoid getting into the bottom of creeks and gullies, these become avalanche paths. Avalanches are a natural occurrence and only become accidents if people are there. The slopes this morning will be good. This sport is dangerous, is your beacon on? Are you wearing a helmet? Bit of a southerly wind going on as well but it does not seem to be affecting lifts, at least at the start of the day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Bit windy this morning, with the top lifts on hold at the start of the day. The Niseko Gondola (at Niseko Village) and the Annupuri Gondola are also not opening on time. All other lifts appear to be moving as planned. It is quite cold this morning and snowing - lightly in places and coming down harder in others. As I write this, heavily at Niseko Village; not so much over at Hanazono. That means that visibility is also rather varied, though generally quite poor higher up on the mountain. The forecasts seem to be saying tomorrow should just be cloudy, and while we might not get heavy snow across the coming days the snow clouds probably won't be far away. They like Niseko. Wind and visibility are the main thing early on. Take care out there. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -7C, 15cm new snow, stormy. Waves are high at the sea with the strong northerly winds as the atmospheric pressure gradient steepend. It is very stormy in the mountains. Snowdrifts are rapidly growing on the slopes over 800m elevation. Avalanche risk increases on the leeward side slopes over the 800m elevation as the wind comes down in the afternoon. Gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow patrols instructions. Better not to ride the steep leeward slopes where wind-blown snow has accumulated today. There is an avalanche risk on Annupuri Osawa cornice slopes and Higashi one cornice slopes even at the lower elevation. Do not traverse across these slopes. Snow in the tree run at the lower elevation is good today. Beware of crashing into trees. With the increase in the number of resort users, the number of people ducking ropes is increasing. If one person ducks a rope, many will follow. As a result, avalanche accidents risk increases. Niseko recorded the highest avalanche fatalities in Japan 30 years ago when there was no Niseko Rules. The rules were created out of necessity. These rules were not created to promote tourism. Please respect and understand the rules. This area will be in a high-pressure system tomorrow and the wind will come down.
