The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Greetings from Naeba. The morning brings a fantastic sight of snowfall, blessing us with a fresh layer of 17cm of fluffy goodness. This is a step towards bringing Naeba back to its snowy glory. While visibility isn't optimal, the consistent snowfall promises to add more softness to the slopes throughout the day. Considering the forecast for a snowstorm and strong winds tomorrow, today might be a good day to hit the slopes. Please note that the Dragondola is not operating today, and access to the top of Takenoko (Naeba Ski Resort top) is currently unavailable. Steep ungroomed runs remain closed. The ski patrol had a mission yesterday to find those some riders ducking the ropes. While we can't blame anyone tempted by the allure of fresh powder, it's just not good behaviour to ignore your hosts 'rules'. They are there for a reason. And there are costs involved for out of bounds accident recovery too, so just best not to go there. Enjoy the snow responsibly and have a fine day. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Overnight, we had an almost 10cm dump. It has been a little cloudy and foggy early morning, but it is all disappearing quickly. As this report is being put together there are patches of blue sky in places. Snow showers might be possible at times today and tomorrow, with clearer skies currently forecast for Wednesday. Ski area operations: Zao Onsen is now mostly open with just a few restrictions. Night skiing with the Onsen Number 2 quad (8:45pm) scheduled to be operating. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a day of pure blue skies, it's back to snow and wind today. It was OK to have a nice day, especially as we celebrated the very local, very small fire festival (dondonyaki) in the Shin-Akakura area at the base of the Kanko Resort. The locals all agreed that we'd never had blue skies for the little gathering and burning of two pillars of straw, at least not in the past 20 years. Falling pretty steadily now, so we'll see more accumulation through the day. A bit of wind effects showing on the surface of the snow, and the wind is supposed to get stronger today, and even more tomorrow. Keep an eye out for lift closures (and stay warm on those lifts exposed to the north winds, like the quad at Akakura Onsen!). The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is a cold, snowy and windy morning! Some interesting snowfall numbers being reported by the ski areas. Hirafu is saying 25cm. The connecting Hanazono is saying 40cm. The JMA measuring point just east of central Kutchan is saying 29cm over 24 hours. My measurement is 30cm. My own main measuring point has been chosen (with great cunning) to not be overly affected by wind, but I think today the snow has been being blown around a bit so there's more/less in different places. The good news, though, is that there is quite a lot of it around. And lovely it is, too. Visibility is poor in places so take some extra care today if you are venturing out. At 8:30am the main top lifts are on hold, as is the Annupuri Gondola and the Hanazono Number 1 lift. To avoid possible confusion I will take out the lift data on the report today. The next sunshine should be on Monday. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8C, 15cm snowfall with gusts. Mikaeri 764m: -13C, strong westerly wind with snow. Moiwa800m: -20.7C, NW7.9m/s (max25m/s@4am). Annupuri1100m: -15.3C, WNW6.6m/s. Village 1000m: -13.9C, WNW3.9m/s, Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.7C, NNE4.0m/s. Haanzono#3: -12.5C, NNW5.5m/s. Severe snowstorm conditions on the sea and the mountains. The avalanche risk is rising drastically. All gates above 800m will be shut. Stay inbounds today. There are too many people not acknowledging the Niseko Rules and taking the out of bounds skiing too easily. Skiers and snowboarders must be aware of the risk they’re taking going outside the resort’s management area. Niseko respects people’s freedom to ski out of bounds and have opened these areas by trusting people. Guides/parents/leaders have great responsibility. Small kids or beginners should not be taken outside the gates too easily. The snow in Niseko is great and the mountains may look gentle, however people should know that many people have lost their lives here too. The Niseko Rules have started out of safety necessity, not for promoting tourism. Lack of safety consciousness could lead to further regulation. Please understand and accept the Niseko Rules. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Yesterday the wind and snow ramped up for about two hours. Afterwards, it has been calm. Earlier it was clearer but now it is largely overcast but some limited visibility higher up (*updated at 9:45am). Hopefully more snow over the next few days. The snow/ice tree 'monsters' are starting to form, but are we clearly need more winter blasts to get them looking scary! Right now they look most... pretty! One of the problems with the snow/sun daily cycles that we have this year is that it gets fairly warm in the day, then freezes really hard overnight (it's been cold at night!) and then there's more wet snow added again. My snowthrower decided to freeze its key so I couldn't turn it (I took it out for safety, since there have been reports of people "borrowing" them), then, after a solid application from my wife's hair dryer, it turned, the lights went on for a minute, then apparently shorted out due to the water that was now inside the lock (it's always something with those big machines). Now in the sun, key out, so hopefully the moisture will escape. Before the next storm cycle... Which is supposed to come tomorrow! The heavy snow warnings with advisories of high winds are out for Niigata Prefecture, and thus us as well. A good day to not go snowshoeing (it's already thigh deep, so add some more new, unsettled snow and high winds....No thank you). Could be fun on the slopes, although you should keep an eye out for closures, especially our region's three gondolas. I've also stopped reporting on the lifts at each resort, as we're above one meter of snowpack at all resorts, and all the main lifts are running (which in turn means all runs are accessible). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. And what a beautiful Sunday it promises to be. It's a cold start. There is some low cloud hanging over some base areas, but that will surely quickly disappear. The sun is going to take control today and make everywhere look so very inviting. And, oh yes, lots of fresh snow too from yesterday. At 3pm yesterday the ski area was reporting 15cm of snowfall Hikage to top, and this morning there seems to be an additional 30cm. By my calculations, hold on, that's 45cm since yesterday on the mountain. My measurement adds up to 33cm. Sounds like Nozawa, right? Whatever, sounds great. Naski will be pleased. As will we all. And! We are still expecting a fair amount of snow from tonight through Tuesday. Hopefully we might get to see Skyline open sometime soon....
