The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good afternoon. Well, after the stormy conditions of yesterday, we are being treated to a day of calm, fine weather. Catching up on the snowfall since yesterday morning, Yakebitaiyama and Okushiga Kogen were both reporting 20cm early morning, and Kumanoyu was reporting 10cm. It eased off last night to leave us with the lovely morning we have enjoyed. There might be some light snow tomorrow. Lower down in the valleys they might get rain, but we should be able to avoid that up here in Shiga Kogen. It shouldn't be heavy though, and it won't be as cold as it was yesterday. The next decent snowfall amounts are forecast for Saturday night. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 269cm Posted on Wednesday 17th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello from Nozawa and it's a beautiful morning with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. We also have lots of nice new snow thanks to the previous few days, and so today should really be a whole lot of fun. I'm sorry I missed first tracks. Thanks also to the snowfall, there's only several runs that are now now open and insignificantly so. Naski is back out and about and taking in the rays this morning - and looking particularly bright green this morning. I'm off out myself now. :) PS The reported snowfall numbers from the ski area below are from yesterday afternoon; the numbers they put up for the daytime yesterday seemed... a bit confused and possibly a typo). Fresh snowfall since yesterday afternoon (reported by the ski area): Yamabiko: 15cm Uenotaira: 10cm Hikage: 5cm Nagasaka: 5cm Karasawa: 5cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): Yamabiko: 215cm Uenotaira: 160cm Hikage: 105cm Nagasaka: 90cm Karasawa: 70cm All lifts apart from the following are now scheduled to be operating: Kandahar Utopia pair Challenge pair All courses apart from the following are now open: Mukobayashi Hachiman Karasawa Nozawa Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Wednesday 17th January 2024 Total snowfall at base 269cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 21 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 64cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 21cm reported on 2 days December 2023 snowfall 93cm reported on 10 days January 2024 snowfall 155cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. - Niseko Now: Tuesday 16th January 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 597cm Posted on Tuesday 16th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday was a day of wind and snow. I am guessing the wind is affecting snowfall numbers this morning. The ski areas reporting 20-25cm, the Avalanche Report mentioning up to 40cm. My observed/measured number is 12cm. Pick your number, but whichever you choose there is a lot of fresh out there and conditions should be excellent this morning. It is a cold morning, so be sure to be wrapped up and definitely take care with limited visibility. It does not feel as windy to me outside, but as of 8:30am the top lifts at all of the ski areas are on hold, as is the gondola at Annupuri. Some nice big flakes of snow falling outside my window. :) It looks like we might get to enjoy some clear skies and sunshine tomorrow and perhaps a several days of the snow easing off. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -9C, 40cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -18.9C, N10.7m/s (max20m/s). Mikaeri live-cam: -11C, strong snow & wind, 300cm snowpack, poor visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -13.9C, NW7.9m/s, 40cm snowfall. Village 1000m: -12.5C, NW6.4m/s, 15cm snowfall at the base in 12h. Hirafu Hanazono: -13.1C, N10.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -11.2C, N7.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW15m/s, Kamui cape N11m/s, 1013hPa, 2.8m waves. Wintery pressure distribution continues with northerly wind and snowfall. Looking at observations results and weather data, the snowfall speed overrides the stabilisation of the snowpack. The avalanche risk remains high in the Kozan no Sawa (Backbowl), O-sawa (Annupuri Bowl), Higashi-One (East ridge) areas. Do not stay put at the bottom of the gullies, avalanches come from above you. All gates above 800m elevation will be shut. Mizuno no Sawa area (gate11) is controlled and is scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Looking at the snowfall transition, Chisenupuri SE face, SW gully, Nitonupuri SE tree-runs are also hazardous today. Avalanches do occur even in the tree-runs. Do not duck ropes in Mizuno no Sawa to access Haru no Taki area. Extremely hazardous conditions today. Overconfidence and ignorance are the number one cause of accidents. Precaution is key to staying safe. The snow condition is deep and fantastic. Guides and leaders are responsible for the party’s safety. Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Tuesday 16th January 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Greetings from a snowy Naeba. Today's report brings thrilling news – we've measured a whopping 44cm of fresh snow, and it's still coming down! However, due to strong winds, Gondola 2 and Dragondola are temporarily closed for safety. Traveling from the town area of Yuzawa to Naeba might take a bit longer today, with substantial snow clearing on the roads causing a doubling of travel time. And make sure to wear those extra layers as it's windy out there. The weather forecast is promising, with tomorrow expected to be sunny, offering the perfect backdrop to enjoy the newly fallen snow. It is another cold morning and snow is still falling; its still quite windy too. This all feels rather 'normal' for Geto Kogen. Hopefully more tree runs will be able to open soon. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. There is very strong wind at the moment and importantly it has snowed heavily overnight. It is foggy too, and I am not able to see any runs, or even the mountain early morning. The snowfall is moving in a horizontal direction. There are snow drifts that are almost 35cm high. A chance that wind might affect some lifts this morning so I would check before heading out. (Update soon after originally posting: Even just since originally writing this, visibility has improved and fog is moving up the mountain. Quickly changing conditions!) Lots of graupel — soft hail &madash; fell, making the snow really dense (I wouldn't want to fall upside down in the stuff; it would be really hard to get yourself out of it). The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . White-out blizzards conditions this morning, folks. It's wild out there. There's not much to see of anything, making conditions really quite dangerous. Many probably would not want to venture out in these conditions anyway, but, even if you did quite a lot of lifts are affected. So it's all quite limited this morning. Probably best to sit this one out and wait until the forecast sun that is due tomorrow. Check the fresh snowfall that ski areas are reporting this morning: Okushiga Kogen 80cm Yakebitaiyama 60cm (very early morning) Kumanoyu: 50cm Wind is blowing the light, find snow around making measurements difficult. Greatly varied amounts depending on where you look. I'm going with 50cm as it seems representative to me. With all the fresh snow, conditions tomorrow should be totally excellent. I'm excited thinking about it. - Nozawa Now: Tuesday 16th January 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 259cm Posted on Tuesday 16th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . There's more snow to report, with nearly 40cm on the top areas of the mountain since yesterday morning. (Yesterday during the day the ski area reported 5cm at Hikage, and 16-18cm higher up. They are reporting a further 10-20cm across the mountain this morning). From here around base, I can report more than the ski area, with 20cm since yesterday morning at my measuring point. Wind is an issue this morning and affecting the gondolas and some lifts. Both the gondolas and top lifts are not open today, so it's a 'lower mountain' kind of day and those slopes will be noticeably busier than usual. Happily, there's nice snow to enjoy down there too. Naski has decided to take the day off too and not making the usual appearance on the Hikage slopes. No doubt that will be upsetting to Naski fans! Probably chilling out in an onsen, if not undertaking other important ski area related duties. Hopefully we will get some more snow during today and then the whole mountain will be open to enjoy tomorrow. Sun is forecast, so it should be a great one.
