The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . First up. Wind is affecting the ski area this morning with the top area closed... at least at the start of the day. The Nagasaka gondola, Yamabiko quads, Skyline connecting pair and Uenotaira quad are affected. OK so on to the snowfall! Top areas were reporting up to 20cm by mid-day yesterday. With the snowfall they are reporting this morning that takes it up to 35-45cm since yesterday. Which is, of course, very nice indeed. (They aren't really reporting base areas at the moment so I can't comment on those). With more snow due today, those top areas should be excellent and much sought after once the lifts get going again. Can't help but feel it didn't snow as much as we were expecting yesterday down at base. Still, a respectable 16cm since yesterday. Visibility is ok in lower areas, more limited as you go up. At time of report it is snowing lightly. Snowfall is due today and to continue through tomorrow, with more likely today than tomorrow. Looking ahead, we might get to enjoy some clearer skies over the weekend. However, it's not quite enough to keep the groomed slope untouched while riding. All lifts are open, but off-piste sections remain closed. Higher elevations experience very poor visibility, yet winds are milder than forecasted. This morning the ski area is reporting 33cm of fresh snow on the mountain, and there's about half of that down at base areas... up until now, as it is still snowing with more expected through tomorrow. Wind might get strong at times too and it is cold with poor visibility. So it's not the most friendly conditions out there and not for everyone. But good snowfall for a few days is just what we need. The snow must have started sometime during the night, because there was very little at bedtime yesterday, and the plows were moving at 4 am. Followed a little later by us individual plowers. The ski area is being a bit shy with numbers as of 8:30am (34cm up top since yesterday, not reporting from base areas yet), but I measure 37cm and the local official measurement is 35cm. Naski has only been out on the Hikage area for half an hour and already is wearing a bit of a snow hat. Oshare! More due today and tomorrow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning there is a lot of cloud around, but even a few bits of blue sky to see in some places. With the fast moving cloud that might be gone by the time I get to post this morning. Also 'in places', it is snowing lightly. So we have a mixed bunch of weather conditions. We're going to be experiencing some more lift disruption again today due to windy conditions on the mountain. As of 8:30am the top lifts are on hold, as is the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village. It's a curiously mild early morning too, with the thermometer outside my place showing slightly under +1C. It should quickly be getting colder over the next several days. Oh yes, I have 5cm of snow to report. I see Hirafu (the ski area) is reporting 15cm, and 20cm is being reported in the Avalanche Report. As always, we can probably expect more at higher elevations, and maybe wind is a factor there too. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: 0C, 20cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -3.0C, SSE5.6m/s, snowdrifts developments. Annupuri 1100m: -5.2C, SE7.4m/s. Village 1000m: -3.9C, SSE10m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -5.4C, 25m/s gusts during the night. Hanazono#3: -2.9C, S3.2m/s, snowdrifts and windblown areas developing alternately. Coastal data: Benkei cape SW3m/s, Kamui cape S13m/s, 999hPa, 0.7m waves. The low pressure system is moving slowly and foul weather is persisting. It is relatively calm in lower elevation, however the atmospheric pressure gradient is steep above 800m elevation. Strong SE winds are generating cornices and heavy snowdrifts in unusual spots. The new snow is not bonding well with yesterday’s surface. The avalanche risk is high in all areas and the surrounding mountains. Stay away from leeward open slopes above 800m elevation. Stay away from avalanche runways, or the gully bottoms. The snow in north facing tree runs under 800m elevation is relatively good, but slides are expected in steep aspects. High elevation gates will be shut. Northerly wind will start blowing as the low pressure moves east and form a typical winter pressure distribution. This information is issued for the safety of all people visiting Niseko. It is hopefully the start of some heavy snow over the next several days. Particularly tomorrow and Thursday, strong winds might be a problem for some ski lifts. Visibility is varied depending on where you are early this morning. Right now in Hasuike the fog is pretty thick, but over at Ichinose Family visibility is much better. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Around 10cm of new snow to report since yesterday. As I write this there is some very (very) (very) light snow falling. It's almost nothing, but it might turn into something during the day. It doesn't feel that cold this morning. Wind is an issue this morning and at the start of the day top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold. Anyway, we are still expecting consistent snowfall during this week so let's see what happens. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -5C, light breeze, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -14.7C, SE4.6m/s, snowdrift development overnight. Mikaeri 764m: -7C, easterly wind and snow, poor visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -8.5C, SE4.7m/s, snowdrift development. Village 1000m: -7.6C, SSE5.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.1C, S12.2m/s, trace new snow. Hanazono#3: -6C, SW7.6m/s. Coastal data: S6m/s, Kamui cape ENE7m/s, 1022hPa, 0.7m waves. Strong southerly winds are blowing on the higher levels as the low pressure system is approaching. Snowdrift development on the slopes above 800m elevation overnight due to the strong easterly wind with low pressure snowfall. Some of them developed 100cm. From the weather data, avalanche risk is low in the morning, however the gates above 1000m elevation will be closed to prevent avalanche accidents. Gate #5 is not yet decided. Wind creates cornices and leeward slopes are avalanche nests. Whether it's low pressure system snowfall or winterly system snowfall, rapid snowdrifts development and slabs cause avalanches. If there is wind, notable slabs can start to form even without snowfall. Snow in the tree runs is excellent. Poor visibility on the slopes around 800m elevation due to the air mass displacement. Beware of the sudden change of weather. Is your beacon on? We can prevent most of the accidents if we are careful. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . So yesterday we did have snow though that turned into rain in the afternoon. That eased off last night and it is a cloudy morning. We might get some rain this evening but from tomorrow temps are going to be dropping and there is consistent snowfall on the forecast for the rest of the week. Just how much is a different matter, but we can be hopeful... Lifts operating (planned): All scheduled lifts operating. Number 2 gondola does not operate on normal weekdays. Runs open (planned): Most of the main runs should be open with some restrictions. Scheduled to open tree runs: Heart, Garden, Rabbit. All subject to change due to conditions.
