  • Niseko Now: Friday 23rd February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 801cm Posted on Friday 23rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a lovely morning it is! There's fresh snow, it's suitably cold, there are blue skies and the sun is out. Nice. All lifts opening as planned and it should be a fine morning, though the clearer skies might not last. I have 14cm of fresh snowfall to report. Hanazono seems to reporting 20-33cm on the mountain and Hirafu is reporting 30cm... a bit surprising, but it sure sounds good and definitely worth investigating. There's more snow lined up on forecasts too, so it looks like it should be a fair end to the month. If I am not mistaken, the Louis Vuitton Niseko Winter Resort Pop-up Store tent thingy at the base of Hanazono will be open until this coming Sunday, so if you want posh bags and stuff, you have a few more days to get on over there! ------------------ Oops, sorry. I made a mistake yesterday. Today is a national holiday, but it is the Emperor's Birthday... not Vernal Equinox Day (that's next month). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -9°, 15cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -17.1°, NNW2.1m/s , minor snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: -10°, N1.9m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -13.5°, WNW2.0m/s. Village 1000: -12.1°, NW1.7m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -13.0°, SSW2.8m/s, 15cm new snow, calm. Hanazono 3 : -1.9°, SSE0.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NE10m/s. Kamui Cape NNE6m/s, 1024hPa, wave 0.8m. There is little atmospheric pressure gradient, the sea and mountains are calm. Cold air flowed into the area last night dropping 10-15cm of crystal snow. Snowdrift development was negligible, from observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols advice, prepare your beacon and other rescue gear and only exit the ski resort through a gate. Once you go through the gate you are no longer at the ski resort. Ducking ropes is strictly prohibited. Also never enter strictly prohibited areas Haru no Taki and Yu no Sawa. Repeat - outside the gates is not the ski resort - no Ski Patrol. In Niseko the gates are opened to allow out of bounds riding when conditions are considered “safe”. However, this sport is never 100% safe. Don t be over confident and always be cautious. Accidents can be prevented with care. More and more serious accidents with people crashing into trees. Ride according to your ability. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Friday 23rd February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Myoko Now: Friday 23rd February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 731cm Posted on Friday 23rd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's snowing again today, thank goodness, although not a lot has fallen. The plows actually woke me up around 3:30 am (it's the sound that tells me that action may shortly be required), but they were just cleaning up the washboard that was our road yesterday. It's coming down pretty nicely at the moment, so let's hope there's more on the way. Look at some of the snow depth figures! Got an interesting message yesterday (via the site contact form): Attention: Myoko snow reporter I have been part of a group of Australian skiers visiting Myoko since 2015 (except corona). We love your mountain but are concerned about the changes which we observe. Major development plans for the mountain, new international style hotels. Too many visitors will turn your wonderful mountain into just another ski resort. Long live Sugi! And it was signed (in katakana) Robert. Thanks so much for that; yes, we share the concern. I'm lucky enough to be on some advisory groups for the prefecture, and my main message is, if we lose our "Myoko-ness," we'll lose the reason our best guests want to come here. And (unlike some of the newer people here), I like living in Japan; I understand that there are good reasons why locals do what the locals do. And I think Robert feels it too. Change will happen, but I hope we can build better, not just bigger. And, this is a skier's mountain, really, with a lot of really pristine nature just behind us. Is that the place for a shopping center and world cuisine? Your thoughts always welcome. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 4cm of fresh snowfall to report this morning with ski areas reporting up to 10cm out on the mountain. There should be more over the coming few days and it should be keeping cold. As I type it is snowing lightly but there is sunshine peeking through clouds around the mountain too. There's a fair amount of blue sky and sun over towards Mt Yotei. Tomorrow a national holiday in Japan, giving many people another 3-day long weekend. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: 10cm snowfall, calm. New cornices above 800m elevation break instantly, and snowdrifts break easily with small impact. Surface slab avalanches are likely to occur on the 40°slopes in the morning. Avoid stimulating knolls. Avalanches at this time of the season tend to occur by breaking snowdrifts (triggered by humans) or natural phenomena such as collapsing of cornices. In any case, accidents only occur when people get caught in it. Some good snow overnight but watch out for hard snow underneath. There was an accident with a broken femur in Fujiwara no Sawa yesterday. Mind your speed, and make reasonable turns. Avoid riding simultaneously on the steep open slopes. Dangerous. Do not stay in the gully bottoms. Gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrol’s instructions. It is quite crowded on the groomers too. Ride according to your skills. Always use gates when you go out of bounds. Do you have a beacon with you? Do not duck ropes. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Thursday 22nd February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Geto Kogen Now: Thursday 22nd February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Geto Kogen region of Iwate New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 820cm Posted on Thursday 22nd February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto Kogen. We were hopeful for good news this morning and I am happy to report a layer of fresh snow... up to 20cm on upper areas of the mountain (reported by the ski area) and a fair amount closer to too. 50+cm would have been better, but this fresh is very welcome! Conditions should feel nice and fresh this morning. :) The snow has stopped at the moment and it is just cloudy but hopefully we will be getting more in the coming days. Sunday/Monday looks like the best chance for the next decent numbers. Lifts operating (planned): All scheduled lifts operating. Gondola Number 2 is usually closed on weekdays. Runs open (planned): Main ski runs open with some restrictions. Tree run course status unclear early morning. Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): 235cm (top) 175cm (base) Geto Kogen Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Thursday 22nd February 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 820cm Number of days snowfall observed 53 days Most snowfall observed on 1 day 73cm (on 30th November) November 2023 snowfall 138cm observed on 5 days December 2023 snowfall 243cm observed on 16 days January 2024 snowfall 382cm observed on 21 days February 2024 snowfall 57cm observed on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Geto Kogen.
