I sort of got sidetracked in my report yesterday; I was looking at the increases in snowpack at the resorts, and forgot to go back and warn that lift closures were likely due to the wind. And then went to Akakura Onsen, and only the two very bottom lifts were running. Same at Kanko for part of the day, too. Lots of wind-swept slopes and mini tornadoes. That means this is a really good day to not go on the steep and deep in the backcountry, as that wind could build up and make for dangerous conditions. Low angle and in the trees would be a better choice (or just wait a day or two for things to settle, and the sun is coming out right now....). The ski area reports 20-30cm on the upper areas since yesterday afternoon, as you can see in the numbers below. Weekend visitors might be in for a further treat with what looks like the possibility of some 'heavy snow' Friday night into Saturday. Naski looks pleased. Oh yes more good news. Here's what the ski areas are saying this morning: Kumanoyu: 50cm fresh snow Yakebitaiyama: 30cm fresh since closing yesterday (and more during the day); up to 70cm in some wind-blown Okushiga Kogen: 70cm of snow over the last few days I'm going with 30cm from a few samples around my place, but again I must stress that there is going to be real variations today. But, zoom out, the great news is all this new snow. More snow is due into the weekend. It has been a very good end to the month. Let's hope March can keep that up! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Wind and snow overnight, so lots of drifting; dense, wind-affected snow; mini tornadoes coming off my neighbor's roof. Nice accumulation, though, and I promise my testing area is not in a drift-affected spot. One thing for backcountry people: most of our snow-related accidents have been after strong winds have come through. That, plus an ice layer underneath (and I was out there yesterday, bouncing off hard ice topped with 15cm or so of heavy new snow) could spell trouble until it gets to settle a little. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Excellent news this morning. It's a cold, wintery, snowy and windy morning in Shiga Kogen with limited visibility. But the best part, of course, is all the fresh snow. The wind is distributing it unevenly, but here is what is being reported by ski areas: Kumanoyu (7am): 30cm Okushiga Kogen: 30-40cm Yakebitaiyama (middle of the night): 25cm My (as not drift-affected-as-possible) measurement is 33cm. There is going to be more than that in places. Wind is affecting some lifts this morning. But once things calm down, conditions should be... almost like new! We might even get a bit of sun sometime tomorrow/Thursday, and then more snow Friday. Sounds like mid-winter, doesn't it? The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It is an overcast start to the day. Quite windy and not particularly cold. Ski areas are reporting up to 5cm of fresh snow and the Avalanche Report mentioned 10cm (wind affected), but I can only report 1cm to you this morning. Wind is a factor again this morning and at the start of the day all but the base lift at Annupuri and all summit lifts are closed. Niseko Village gondola too. The next delivery of new cm of snow looks due to be around Friday and Saturday, which would be a good way to start March. Gosh, can you believe it's almost March?! (That Niseko Village video webcam is scary to watch when it's windy... with all the wobbling going on, it looks like footage from a very strong earthquake). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -5℃, 10cm wind affected snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -13.2℃, SSW3.5m/s, snowdrifts developing. Mikaeri 764m: No data. Annupuri 1100m: -9.1℃, NNE7.7m/s. Village 1000m: -7.9℃, N11.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.7℃, WSW12m/s. Hanazono 800m: -6.7℃, N4.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape ENE7m/s, Kamui cape NE5m/s, 1022hPa, 2.2m waves. Looking at the weather transition and observations data, the snowdrifts are relatively stable below 900m elevation. The avalanche risk is low below treeline except in knolls and steep 40° slopes. Snowdrifts have accumulated in SW aspects due to last night’s strong (25+m/s) NE wind and they remain very unstable above 1200m elevation. 40-50cm thick surface slab avalanches are to be expected in those areas. This snowfall is due to the low pressure system in the east. It does not consolidate quickly and can let go easily. The avalanche risk in slopes above 1200m will remain high throughout the day. Better stay away from the large bowls today. The slopes under 800m elevation is, although shallow, mostly reset with new snow. Gates opening is yet to be decided, please follow the ski patrol’s decision. Avalanches are natural phenomena and are only a problem when a human being is caught in it. Please refrain from accessing the Anbetsu area from Gate 6. Many cases of beginners following these tracks and getting lost has been happening recently. We appreciate your understanding. After starting later in the day, the ski area is reporting up to 26cm on upper areas. That should give us a welcome refresh (if not a complete reset). Today cloud and light snow at times is forecast. There is more snow forecast for the first few days of March, so signs of winter sticking with us. The Number 2 pair lift is now only open on weekends and Saturdays.
