  • Yuzawa Now: Monday 11th March 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 640cm Posted on Monday 11th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It has to be an early report this morning and so too early for some of the snow depth numbers below to be updated. How great was it to get that blast of winter the previous few days?! :) We had light snow on continuing for much of yesterday during the day, though it didn't really amount to much down in town... there might have been several cm or more at higher elevations. This morning we start with cold temps, beautiful clear skies, and a wind that you can hear. As of 7am, there don't seem to be any notices of ski areas not opening due to wind, so hopefully they all will be open as planned... (In fact, Kagura seems to be saying there is 'no wind'. Curious!) It should be a great morning to enjoy the snow. Cloud is expected later on today with things warming up to a high temp of around +7C in town. Tomorrow we might get some rain but there might be more snow for us as we get into Wednesday. ** Update at 9am: wind doesn't seem to be an issue at all! ---------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 210cm The Northern Area connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama is available The Southern Area connection with Yuzawa Kogen is available The downhill Falcon course has re-opened Planned closing date: Monday 6th May 2024 Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 160cm (mid) The connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is available Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 Iwappara Official snow depth: 105cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 200cm (top) Night skiing until 8:30pm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Kagura Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 150cm (base) Planned closing date: Monday 6th May 2024 (Tashiro Area) Planned closing date: Sunday 19th May 2024 (Kagura Area via Mitsumata) Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 170cm Planned closing date: Sunday 21st April 2024 Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 65cm (lower) Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 75cm (base) Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Naeba Official snow depth: 150cm (top), 70cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 See our Naeba Now report NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 150cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 150cm (top), 50cm (base) The connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is available Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 110cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Yuzawa Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Monday 11th March 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 640cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 47 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 55cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 14cm reported on 2 days December 2023 snowfall 137cm reported on 9 days January 2024 snowfall 306cm reported on 15 days February 2024 snowfall 79cm reported on 12 days March 2024 snowfall 104cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 13th March 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this seas 649cm Posted on Wednesday 13th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Cloud to rain to snow yesterday, and it was actually snowing quite heavily at some points last night. The result is about 10cm around town this morning, a bit wet. There is probably more than that higher up and, indeed, Maiko Snow Resort is this morning reporting 10-20cm of snow. (If only more ski areas told us about these things. Sorry, broken record!) Strong winds are forecast today and because of that the Tashiro Area of Kagura is definitely closed for the day, and it looks like the Kagura Area might also be closed. The Mitsumata Area is planning on opening. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway is also closed for the day but the lower area of Yuzawa Kogen ski area is open. All other ski areas appear to be opening as planned (though if it does get windy there may be some disruptions). Sun and milder conditions are expected tomorrow and Friday, and maybe over the weekend too. Beyond that, there is more snow on the forecasts for next week, so it seems we're not done with the fresh snow yet! ---------------------------- I believe quite a few of the official snow depth numbers at the moment are the highest they have been all season (though worth noting they are still noticeably lower than usual highs). That's got to be pretty unique for March. (We can all check the data on the Snow data pages within the listings for each ski area. For example, here's the one for GALA Yuzawa). • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 14th March 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 651cm Posted on Thursday 14th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A few cm of snow since the morning report yesterday as snow continued on and off. And there might be some more freshly groomed snow out there to enjoy this morning. This morning there's some cloud around, particularly north of Yuzawa, but lots of blue sky and it feels like it is going to be a good morning. More sun is forecast for tomorrow... and Saturday, possibly Sunday, too. It is going to be getting warmer too over the next several days, with temps perhaps approaching/reaching double digits at times (most likely tomorrow - a high of around 7C is forecast for today). There is more snow shown on weekly forecasts for next week, so we might be getting some more fresh. The report has to be a bit too early for some ski areas updates this morning, but all will probably be open as scheduled. ---------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 250cm The Northern Area connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama is available The Southern Area connection with Yuzawa Kogen is available The downhill Falcon course has re-opened Planned closing date: Monday 6th May 2024 Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 170cm (mid) The connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is available Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 Iwappara Official snow depth: 105cm Night skiing until 7:00pm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 200cm (top) Night skiing until 8:30pm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Kagura Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 150cm (base) Planned closing date: Monday 6th May 2024 (Tashiro Area) Planned closing date: Sunday 19th May 2024 (Kagura Area via Mitsumata) Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 180cm Planned closing date: Sunday 21st April 2024 Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 40cm (lower) Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 200cm (top), 100cm (base) Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Naeba Official snow depth: 150cm (top), 70cm (base) Night skiing until 8:30pm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 See our Naeba Now report NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 130cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 150cm (top), 50cm (base) The connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is available Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 120cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Planned closing date: Sunday 31st March 2024 Yuzawa Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Thursday 14th March 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 651cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 49 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 55cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 14cm reported on 2 days December 2023 snowfall 137cm reported on 9 days January 2024 snowfall 306cm reported on 15 days February 2024 snowfall 79cm reported on 12 days March 2024 snowfall 115cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this seas 660cm Posted on Tuesday 19th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It has to be an early report today and so some ski area info is not updated yet. We have some fresh snow on the ground this morning - around 5-10cm in town areas so hopefully a bit more than that higher up. Nice. [Update: Maiko is reporting 10-20cm of fresh snow] It is quite bright too so while we have cloud forecast for the day, it feels like it might get to be sunny. All ski areas will probably be open so it should be a good day. Later tomorrow into Thursday is still looking very interesting. Everyone is wondering if we will really get the considerable amount of snowfall that forecasts are indicating... there's a suspicion that it won't really happen, but it will be great if it does. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. OK, so it was raining, but it has turned to snow and we already have up to 2cm in places as of 7:30am. Forecasts still tell us to expect some heavy snow at times over the next 24-36 hours and some (normal!) mid-winter-like amounts of fresh snow. Particularly later this afternoon and overnight tonight. Ski areas would probably have preferred to have got this snow in February (and not on a national holiday like today), but here we are! More snow is always welcome... With heavy snow expected this afternoon, the top lift at Kagura is closed and they plan to cut off the Kagura<>Tashiro connecting course at 2pm. Otherwise, ski areas appear to be opening as normal this morning. ---------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 200cm The connections with Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen are open. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 21st March 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this seas 692cm Posted on Thursday 21st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Perhaps in the general tradition of the 23-24 season, what actually happened yesterday and overnight wasn't quite what the forecasts told us to expect. Fairly soon after the report yesterday morning, the snow eased off and we even got some bright spells during the day, though it remained mostly cloudy. So there wasn't much snow to talk about down at town level yesterday. We did get an impressive amount overnight though. Here's what is being reported: Kagura: 40cm Maiko Snow Resort: 35cm Japan Meteorological Agency measuring point: 26cm Our Yuzawa measuring point: 30cm Our Minamiuonuma measuring point (north of Ishiuchi Maruyama): 21cm That's amazing for late March. Check out the Snowfall analysis page of this report here. On that page you'll see that last year we were only able to report 11cm of snowfall in the whole of March. And most years, we have reported less than 50cm in March. This March, we have now reported 156cm of snowfall at town level. And all that after the very poor showing (in terms of snowfall) in February. It has definitely been a very odd-feeling season. But anyway, we have fresh snow and conditions should be really good this morning! Who's have thought?! Snow has been forecast through the day today too, but it is only snowing lightly right now and there is even a bit of sunshine breaking through the clouds and some blue sky just north of Yuzawa. Ski area news: The Tashiro Area of Kagura and the top lift at the ski area is closed again today due to wind. ---------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 200cm The connections with Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen are open. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 22nd March 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this seas 711cm Posted on Friday 22nd March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had snow on and off during the day yesterday and after more fairly heavy snow overnight, I just measured another 19cm. (Maiko Snow Resort was reporting 15cm earlier on). And it's still snowing! There's even some decent mini snow walls appearing by the side of roads. Beyond this morning there isn't much snow on the forecast for the week ahead and it is expected to be milder, so there is a fair chance that this might be our last fresh delivery of the season. But what a late season it has been. There is a chance of rain during the day in town as it gets much milder than it has been (though remaining under 10). If we are lucky, snow higher up. Cloud is forecast for tomorrow. GALA Yuzawa is closed today, the reason given being forecast strong (southerly) winds. Other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 31st March 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 713cm Posted on Sunday 31st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The clouds seem very reluctant to clear up at the moment! Yesterday we had cloud, limited visibility and some spots of rain at times/in places, and this morning there is still lots of cloud around... and a damp feel (though it is not actually raining right now). Very limited visibility at the moment in some higher areas (as you can see on the GALA webcam image below). We are probably not going to get any sun today, but at least it doesn't feel windy. Hopefully it won't rain, but it feels like it might. Curious weather these last few days. The Tashiro Area of Kagura remains closed today because of Ropeway issues, and the top Number 5 lift is also closed (due to poor visibility and avalanche risk). So today is the last day of the season for the following ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma: Iwappara Joetsu Kokusai Maiko Snow Resort Muikamachi Hakkaisan Nakazato Snow Wood NASPA Ski Garden Yuzawa Nakazato Yuzawa Park This time last month it didn't feel like they would make it this far, but thanks to the snowfall in March... they have! Ipponsugi Snow Park (which is now basically just a playing area with the ski lift not operating) might actually still remain open until next week depending on conditions. (Apologies for including it in the list yesterday). Kagura, GALA Yuzawa, Ishiuchi Maruyama, Kandatsu Snow Resort, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen will continue... more details on operations of those ski areas will be added to the report tomorrow. ---------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 170cm The Central Area and most of the Northern Area are open The Southern Area, lift connections with Yuzawa Kogen and Ishiuchi Maruyama and the downhill Falcon course are now closed for the season Planned closing date: Monday 6th May 2024 Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth: 90cm (mid) The Main Entrance is open with five lifts operating (including Sunrise Express) The other two bases are now closed for the season The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now closed for the season Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 Iwappara Official snow depth: 40cm The central to summit area is open with four lifts operating The lower section is now closed for the season Night skiing until 7:00pm Planned closing date: Today Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 80cm (top) The main base and Panorama areas are open The Atema and Osawa bases are now closed for the season Night skiing until 8:30pm Planned closing date: Today Kagura Official snow depth: 190cm (top), 140cm (base) Planned closing date: Monday 6th May 2024 (Tashiro Area) Planned closing date: Sunday 19th May 2024 (Kagura Area via Mitsumata) Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 120cm Planned closing date: Sunday 21st April 2024 Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 140cm (top), 30cm (lower) The top Okusoechi area remains open (serviced by the gondola) The Nagamine and Maiko areas are now closed for the season Planned closing date: Today Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 180cm (top), 60cm (base) Planned closing date: Today Naeba Official snow depth: 130cm (top), 50cm (base) Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 See our Naeba Now report for more details NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 80cm Planned closing date: Today Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 120cm (top), 30cm (base) The top connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now closed for the season Planned closing date: Sunday 7th April 2024 Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 60cm Two lifts remain operating Planned closing date: Today Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 70cm Three lifts remain operating Planned closing date: Today Yuzawa Now 2023-2024 season Data as of Sunday 31st March 2024 Total snowfall at base so far 713cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 54 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 55cm (23rd December) November 2023 snowfall 14cm reported on 2 days December 2023 snowfall 137cm reported on 9 days January 2024 snowfall 306cm reported on 15 days February 2024 snowfall 79cm reported on 12 days March 2024 snowfall 177cm reported on 16 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 713cm Posted on Friday 12th April 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some blue skies this morning with some thin cloud and a temperature of just over 10C at 8am. Temperatures will be getting into the low 20s over the coming few days with a lot of sun and clear skies forecast into early next week. The forecast for the month ahead was released by JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) yesterday. Unfortunately, it was dark red for the entire country. That means a very high probability that it will be warmer than normal. The lower main run at Kandatsu is getting very patchy now. Can they make it to Sunday? It's going to be giri-giri. There is no official news to report from GALA Yuzawa or Kagura, but it feels like remaining open until their planned closing dates is going to be... difficult.
