Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 99cm Posted on Monday 23rd December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. While it was snowing on and off yesterday, it didn't really end up with much in terms of new cm. This morning just a dusting on top of the car, with the higher elevations at Kagura reporting 5cm of fresh snow. We started off with a grey cloud cover this morning but it seems like it might be clearing up. Some blue skies have broken out over Minamiuonuma and as I write this the sun is making an appearance. All the signs of clearing conditions -- but, the local forecast actually gives us snow this afternoon and into tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 114cm Posted on Wednesday 25th December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 5-10cm or so of snow on the car this morning and resorts around Yuzawa are reporting 5-20cm of fresh snow overnight. Kagura is boasting an impressive 30-40cm with Naeba reporting 15-20cm. So a new nice layer of snow to enjoy this Christmas morning. Today the forecast told us to expect a clear start - and it does look like surrounding areas are more like that - but it was a very overcast and cloudy start to the day in Yuzawa this morning. Having said that, as I write this at 9:30am, the clouds do seem to be preparing to break up and depart and the sun threatening to shine through. My contact over in Naeba told me that the sun is out there and a mixture of cloud and blue sky. So my guess is that it's going to clear up today over Yuzawa and we might be left with those blue skies that the forecast told us to expect. Let's see. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 27th December 2013
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 116cm Posted on Friday 27th December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So yesterday started off with lovely clear skies and mid morning there were some deep blues to enjoy, though quite quickly things changed and by lunchtime it was still bright but overcast. As it got darker the skies were very grey. Amazing sometimes how quickly it can change. I have heard reports of rain in nearby areas, but when I was out at 8pm last night it was still just cloudy so can't confirm if we got rained on after that! This morning we woke to just a dusting of snow really, with the most (5cm) being reported by Kagura. At the moment in Yuzawa it is just 0 degrees with light wet snow falling. A light wind but more wind higher up and windier conditions due later in the day and tomorrow too. Resorts are almost all open but really we are on less snow than usual I would say. I noticed in the Nozawa Now report today there was a comparison with last year so let's take a look on here too. 27th December 2012: Naeba - 120cm Kagura - 250cm GALA Yuzawa - 190cm Iwappara - 140cm Yuzawa Kogen - 150cm Maiko Snow Resort - 180cm Joetsu Kokusai - 150cm Today: Naeba - 110cm Kagura - 220cm GALA Yuzawa - 180cm Iwappara - 90cm Yuzawa Kogen - 110cm Maiko Snow Resort - 115cm Joetsu Kokusai - 80cm These are all the numbers reported by the resorts themselves and so comparable year on year. So they are all on less snow than last year - with some much less. It's quite clear though as there isn't that much snow around town at the moment. Hopefully we'll get snowed on good in this next week into New Year. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 126cm Posted on Saturday 28th December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow yesterday but it didn't amount to much during the day though in the evening the snow started falling with a bit more conviction and there was 10cm or so on top of the car by late night. Another 10cm or so overnight at town level and it has been continuing to snow this morning. Interesting actually because from time to time the sun seems to be close to breaking through the clouds and even at one point we had some clear blue skies over town, only to be clouded over quite quickly. Even with the sun shining through at times though, the snow has continued to fall lightly. It's a battle between the snow clouds and the sun. Could it clear up? Right now it feels like it may well do. Kagura reporting 20cm of snowfall; Naeba 15-20cm; Maiko 15-20cm. Still, the local forecast as it stands at the moment is for snowfall through today and all of tomorrow as well. -2C degrees overnight and it hasn't budged since then, still standing at -2. Windy conditions apparently in places this morning, enough to cause problems at Kagura. Some lifts were closed earlier but seem to be up and running now, though the Dragondola connecting Naeba and Tashiro is closed still. No other resorts seem to be affected. --- Official resort snow depths @ Saturday 28th December 2013, AM: Naeba: 120cm Kagura (Tashiro): 180cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 220cm NASPA Ski Garden: 135cm Gala Yuzawa: 180cm Iwappara: 105cm Yuzawa Kogen: 130cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 90cm Yuzawa Park: 90cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 130cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 140cm Joetsu Kokusai: 80cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Saturday 28th December 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 126cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 14 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 30cm (16th December) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 121cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out this morning! It's not supposed to be, but it is! Lets rewind a bit to yesterday when it was snowing for lots of the day, but as I hinted at in the report, there were short periods of time when it stopped snowing and we even saw the sun and blue sky. The snow clouds usually moved back in fairly quickly though. So there's quite a lot of blue sky up there this morning, but the forecast is for snow all day. I hear it was clouded over earlier as well, so perhaps it will quickly cloud over once again like it was doing yesterday. For now though, sun is shining down and it's a lovely morning. 15cm of so of new snowfall since yesterday and resorts reporting about that, the most up at Kagura who report 20cm. --- Official resort snow depths @ Sunday 29th December 2013, AM: Naeba: 130cm Kagura (Tashiro): 180cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 220cm NASPA Ski Garden: 140cm Gala Yuzawa: 190cm Iwappara: 110cm Yuzawa Kogen: 130cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 90cm Yuzawa Park: 90cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 140cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 140cm Joetsu Kokusai: 100cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Sunday 29th December 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 136cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 15 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 30cm (16th December) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday saw those fine skies over the valley once again with cloud and even snow falling to the north in Niigata Prefecture. They seem to have wanted to just avoid the Minamiuonuma district. It's actually partly the same again today - more cloud and a greyer start to the day, but it's just cloudy and no snow falling early on... though I hear that to the north once again the snow clouds are delivering some fairly big flakes of snow. Oh the waste! We got just a very slight dusting of snow overnight both at lower levels and up at Kagura and Naeba. Snow might be falling as the day progresses though and definitely tomorrow. It's keeping fairly mild for the moment and currently +1 in town. Here's to a safe and snowy 2014. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Happy New Year! Here we are into 2014 already. Why does time seem to speed up so much once the winter season gets underway! A lovely sun peeking up over the mountains earlier on this morning (the photo below coming to you from Maiko Snow Resort), and while the sun is still managing to show itself at times, the skies have clouded over more and that looks likely to continue. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Kagura is reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall overnight, but strong winds mean that the Mitsumata Station is open from the Ropeway to the Number 1 pair lift and the Tashiro Station is just open from the Ropeway to the Number 1 quad. A strong northerly wind at Naeba, where they report 10-20cm, is affecting some lifts over there too. It's windy here too but resorts around the town area don't seem to be as affected, and we have had more like 5-10cm of snowfall around base areas so nothing major really for this region this morning. Obviously that could change at any time. The snow is coming down this morning though so fingers crossed we can build up some more before it eases off - which the forecast tells us should be later today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Cloudy and sort of snowing on and off yesterday, and overnight too. Result - resorts around town are reporting 10-15cm of fresh snow since yesterday. I had 10cm to clear off the car this morning. Feels a bit the same this morning with light snow falling and cloudy but there have been glimpses of sunlight and signs that clouds might clear up a bit. Even some patches of blue sky over Minamiuonuma a bit earlier, but as I write this it has clouded over again and that light lazily falling snow is back with us. It's not going to give us much in terms of new cm though falling like it is. A quick look at the forecasts. Some have this kind of light snow on and off over the next few days, others give us more of a chance of sun. All a bit mixed really. What does look promising is from Thursday onwards with decent snowfall and colder temperatures. That's what we'll need to keep our eyes on. Last day of the holidays and typically less busy as people check out and go back home. From tomorrow, just a normal Monday for most people. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 166cm Posted on Monday 6th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Resorts around town reporting 5cm of snow this morning - ranging from town level to Kagura. I'm putting 10cm though because that is how much was on my car this morning. Curious that the resorts seem to be under-reporting... The very good news this morning though is that it is really snowing quite heavily right at the moment. Real Yuzawa-style, something we haven't seen enough of yet this season. Forecasts didn't really tell us to expect this but it's coming down good now. We just need it to last and bring us a good thick new layer - snow is forecast now for the day and to clear up later on to be followed by cloud overnight and then sun tomorrow. So it's all about how much we can get during the day today. With the snow coming down as it is, visibility looks to be poor on all the resorts this morning. There's some wind at higher elevations but apart from the Dragondola connecting Naeba with Tashiro, resorts look open as normal. After the busy long new year holidays we are back to a normal working week in Japan and so resorts will be getting into normal weekday mode from today. No doubt catching their breath after the crowds. So tomorrow sun is forecast. Just a few cm more to add from around the resorts since yesterday, though with another 10cm on my car during the day that's the number I'm adding below. The snow eased off later in the day and overnight the clouds have dispersed leaving us with clear and sunny skies this morning over the region. Late tomorrow should see the start of a run of snowy days that will hopefully bring us lots of snow. --- Official resort snow depths @ Tuesday 7th January 2014, AM: Naeba: 130cm Kagura (Tashiro): 200cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 160cm Gala Yuzawa: 220cm Iwappara: 105cm Yuzawa Kogen: 150cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 90cm Yuzawa Park: 110cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 160cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 160cm Joetsu Kokusai: 120cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Tuesday 7th January 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 176cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 19 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 30cm (16th December) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 40cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 9th January 2014
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 178cm Posted on Thursday 9th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. As expected we got some rain yesterday as temperatures remained fairly mild and not going down into negative numbers. It turned into light wet snow overnight but we don't have a whole lot to show for it, not down at town level anyway. Just a thin coating of new snow with the most being reported by Kagura at 5-10cm. It is snowing now though and we should be seeing continued snowy conditions now for the next few days and so we're hopefully for a big delivery. The local Niigata forecast just published tells us to expect up to 6cm of snow between now and 4pm today in Yuzawa. --- Official resort snow depths @ Thursday 9th January 2014, AM: Naeba: 130cm Kagura (Tashiro): 200cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 155cm Gala Yuzawa: 220cm Iwappara: 100cm Yuzawa Kogen: 160cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 90cm Yuzawa Park: 110cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 160cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 160cm Joetsu Kokusai: 120cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Thursday 9th January 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 178cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 20 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 30cm (16th December) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 42cm reported on 5 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
