Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 654m Weather overview Sunny Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 4:00pm on Wednesday 16th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun is out today. Now, I've made my preference for pounding snow (soft underfoot, keeps out the riffraff), but the mountains were really beautiful in all their white glory this morning. We can always use a sunny day to help clear off roofs around here, too, and people were up on roofs digging away throughout the day. And a lot of people visiting Myoko actually never see Mt. Myoko itself even during a long stay during this time of year. Back to snow tomorrow. Yea! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 73cm Snowfall at base this season 594m Weather overview Heavy snow Wind Varied Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted at 10:30am on Friday 11th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow, snow, snow! We are definitely back to Myoko-style snowfalls. I measured 73cm on the trusty study plot boards this morning (trying to be more scientific, you know). Pretty dense below nice fluffy stuff on top, so it will be a bit of a slog on those steep climbs today. Onpiste things should be great, and word from the patrol early on was that there aren't a lot of people out on the hill (tomorrow is the start of a three-day weekend, so that will change!). Out of bounds, be careful of the hard layer below the new snow; we need to go out for a dig, but just in cleaning around the house there is a pretty solid level of frozen wet snow down below the new that could cause the new snow to slide. Take your avy gear, even if you're just sneaking off from the lifts--too many people are out there unprepared (the locals are shaking their heads about this). Now, after two hours of digging and writing this report, time for me to check it out in person! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 351cm Weather overview Cloud and rain Wind Light Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 8:33am on Monday 31st December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The rain has indeed turned to snow--about 10cm by the backyard ruler. A big change in temperature over one day, too; yesterday's high was nearly 8C, where it's now around -2C. No big worries for skiing on the groomed, but backcountry travelers should keep an eye on the layer of rain, especially if we get a big snow. Most likely the layer will simply disappear (thank you maritime weather and snow patterns, and Myoko's mild climate), but it could form a hard layer that the new slides off. Apparently they're seeing some of this in Hakuba--but things are a bit more Alpine there. It always feels funny to give a New Year greeting, because we've just started the new season, and that's more the beginning point of the best part of 365 days. But all the best in the coming year! And especially plenty of snow, of course... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy New (calendar) Year, and continuation of the ski season! Things really get going from now on. Slow start to the ski day for most people, including your writer (daughter has on the endless humor/music/nostalgia TV shows that are a staple on Jan. 1, and which will suck you in if you're not careful). The big snow that has been predicted, but it's not here yet--only some light flakes falling, and that's about it. NHK television is saying that the next two days on particular look like heavy snow--and the whole prefecture has just released a heavy snow warning. Sounds good to me.... Right now the mountains are slowly disappearing in white--hopefully not fog--enven while it's still sunny to the east. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 359cm Weather overview Light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 9:07am on Wednesday 2nd January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . That great big snowstorm that triggered heavy snow warnings all across Niigata is... missing. Some very nice, light snow fell overnight, but less than 10cm of it (the resorts are reporting a bit more, and there may have been more snow up high). It's still snowing a bit in the hills, and it looks plenty dark and gray to the north over the ocean, but there definitely is not a lot of powder out there this morning. Not that it would be a bad day for skiing, at least on the groomed slopes. It's sunny/partly cloudy at base level right now, the snow is firm (and probably not as hard as yesterday), and your hangover has most likely disappeared by now. So get out there, enjoy what we have, and see if that big fall actually comes true. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 409cm Weather overview Heavy snow Wind Light to moderate Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 1:33pm on Thursday 3rd January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There are days when you will say, our correspondent is an irresponsible, lazy lout for not getting a report up in a timely fashion. And there are days when you will say, well, yeah, of course, I completely understand. This day is one of the latter. The big snow has hit. My snowblower's electrical system decided to be fritzy, so late start to clearing about 50cm of fresh. Had to take some people over to Seki Onsen (have to give it a few laps, right?). Snorkel depth powder; repeated overhead shots (and I'm a tall guy). Even my van got face shots on the way up--the wipers got overloaded by one big blast on the way doen! It really feels Myoko-y today. I measured 47cm at 7am, and it's only falling more heavily now. Very tricky on the roads; lots of cars getting stuck, so be sure to have 4WD and chains if not snow tires. Even then it's tough in places. Tough, but the reward is so good. Oh, yeah, I had to take more than just one lap of course..... Forgiven? The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's still snowing like mad, I'm still going out to play (and the snow thrower is even more on the fritz), but here is your timely report for Friday, January 4. It's snowing. Because of the machine troubles I didn't get out to properly measure the snow, but there's a lot more on top of yesterday's really massive fall. We've got to be somewhere around 1 meter total for these two days, although it does settle down pretty quickly. Still means lots of powder to play in today. It was really cold overnight, as you'll see in the snow reports. Looks a little higher temps tomorrow, although still in the minus side, with some sun. I suspect the resorts are busy, too; a lot of reports aren't in yet. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The rain has arrived; a light misting in the early morning, getting a little heavier at the time of this report. You can look at this two ways, I figure: a little rain on the snow makes for a nice smooth ride on the groomers, or it's a good day to just take off and enjoy a quiet day looking at the Myoko forests and hills while you wait for the next heavy snowfall. Which will come very shortly. Besides, you need your strength for New Year's! And the Myoko area does make some very fine sake. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The threatened rain for today hasn't materialized--yet. Things started cloudy, turned to perfect blue skies, and now things are clouding up again, with some fog appearing up the hill. It looks more like the rain will be falling tomorrow; but it is definitely warmer today, so we could get some wet today (ignore Suginohara's temperature report for today--no way it was -7°, except maybe at the top of Mt. Myoko). Still good snow out there, though! And more to follow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 336cm Weather overview Clear, partly cloudy Wind Light Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 4:51am on Friday 28th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I promised myself that I'd get out an early report--which is good, except that the official snow reports haven't been updated locally yet (except for Ikenotaira). But I can say that no new snow has fallen since yesterday, the day is beginning partly cloudy/sunny, the wind is light from the southwest. The highly reliable (and I'm serious here, people) SnowJapan weather report for Akakura Kanko even says we might get a little snow today and tomorrow, although the freezing line will be going up the mountain--meaning it will be warmer, with some chance of rain down low. Then the snow is back in into next week, which keeps us all happy. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Such a nice day; so busy in the morning. All that blowing, accumulating snow was there sparkling in the early morning sunlight (and an early-morning ski lesson meant I didn't get my time at the desk). But here we go: you should have been out there in the cold, sunny, wonderfully nice snow. It really was a good one, with about 27cm of fresh falling around the base, on top of....what was it...something like 80cm recently? It's hard to tell, as our maritime snow settles fairly quickly, but it's still nice powder when and right after it falls. Looks like a little more snow tomorrow, then the freezing line moves up the mountain, meaning we might have some rain, at least lower down, in the weekend. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a blizzard out there this morning, with strong winds and pretty good snowfall. It's hard to tell how much has actually fallen, with a lot of drifting of snow around buildings and cars. The wind is strong enough, in fact, that there's a good chance that some of the lifts might not be running at all times, especially gondolas and some of the more exposed lifts. You might want to check with the individual areas' websites, if someone has the required Japanese reading skills. In sheltered areas, though, there could be some very nice powder out there; temperatures are pretty low and staying there this morning. Calmer (and perhaps clearer conditions) likely tomorrow.
