The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get rained on later in the day yesterday, but it is dry this morning with an early mix of blue sky and cloud - both white and grey. Sunny skies are what the forecasts tell us to expect today and without wanting to sound repetitive, that is what we should be having until at least the middle of next week too. And while it is going to be a little colder today (a high of about 8C expected in town), it will be warming up again from tomorrow with temperatures reaching 20C on Sunday and early in the week. People who suffer from hay fever come prepared - a high pollen count is also likely, especially from Sunday. There are now just three days left in the season for a few ski resorts in the area. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa on this last day of the season for the Iwappara ski resort in Yuzawa and the Ishiuchi Maruyama, Maiko Snow Resort and Joetsu Kokusai resorts in neighbouring Minamiuonuma. We were hoping that there might be a chance of some light snow this morning. So how did that go? 2cm of fresh snow is being reported by the higher Kagura resort. And 5cm is being reported by Maiko Snow Resort. We can probably expect somewhere around at other higher elevations around Yuzawa. Around town, it's more like just a dusting - none in some places a more in others, but I am going to be generous and add 1cm to the report today. As well as GALA Yuzawa, the images today (below) are from the Yuzawa IC exit of Route 17 in Yuzawa and the webcam from Route 17 between the Tashiro Ropeway and Naeba (labelled as Mikuni Route 17 on the Webcam page). You can see that dusting in town as well as more on the road on the way up to Naeba. Rain / sleet / light snow had been falling in various parts of the area early on but I just went outside and there was nothing falling... and it looks like there is increasing blue sky appearing to the north. Perhaps we might enjoy some clearer weather as the day progresses? It's keeping relatively cold though so if you plan to go out get wrapped up and enjoy! --- From tomorrow (Monday), only Kagura, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu Kogen will remain open daily - with Naeba planning to open up on weekends. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The big news this morning is that the GALA Yuzawa resort has announced that they will be open until Sunday 22nd April - rather than the initially planned 6th May. As you might expect, the reason being given is that since March we have had little fresh snow and warmer conditions are affecting snow conditions. So just over one week left at GALA and from Monday 23rd April we will be down to only the Kagura resort being open. It will be interesting to see if Kagura can open as long as initially planned. Anyway, on to the weather and as I write that I can hear some wind making some howling sounds. At the time of writing that does not seem to be an issue with the resorts opening... It is a mostly cloudy start to the day and it definitely feels colder than it has been. Tomorrow should be warmer and we might get to see more sunshine, but rain later on and perhaps into Sunday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We start the day with sunshine. The local news last night was reporting a temperature of just over 27C in Yuzawa yesterday. Hot! And more like June than April. It probably won't be as hot today and this coming week, more like... rather warm. It was a bit of a special case with temperatures more likely to be bumping along close to 20C this week (a bit above that today). --- The GALA Yuzawa resort is now closed for the season. Otsukaresama deshita! Naeba is closed again from today through Friday. They were reporting a temps of nearly 23C and the blooming of cherry blossoms around base. It won't be quite as hot and there's a bit more thin cloud around, but the sun is out and it feels warm. Today is a national holiday and is the last day of the season for Naeba. Those holidays are as follows: - 29th April is 'Showa Day' (Showa-no-hi), the birthday of former Emperor Showa - 3rd May is 'Constitution Day' (Kenpo-kinenbi) - 4th May is 'Greenery Day' (Midori-no-hi) - 5th May is 'Children's Day' (Kodomo-no-hi) What this means for 2018 is that most people will enjoy two long weekends - 3 days this upcoming weekend and then 4 days off the weekend after: Long Weekend 1: Saturday 28th April - Monday 30th April Long Weekend 2: Thursday 3rd - Sunday 6th May Some people may even be lucky enough to have/take Tuesday and Thursday off next week, giving them a long 9 day holiday! The weather is often really good over the Golden Week period and of course the end of Golden Week is also the end of ski lift operations at Tashiro, but Kagura plans to remain open beyond that date through until later in May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. A fine day yesterday and it is going to be a fine and rather warm day today with temps due to rise to around mid-20s. From tomorrow, just Kagura will be open and they hope to be able to remain open until 27th May. Here’s how much snowfall we have observed in town over the last six winter seasons: 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm So just over 8.5m in total for the season. That was not as much as last season, but double what we got during the 2015-2016 season. A respectable number for sure, but it has been a bit surprising just how little snow we got from early March onwards. 845cm of the 857cm total for the season fell by the end of February 2018! (Though please note that there was more snowfall at higher elevations). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday and the day before were both pretty hot - it was almost 30C in Yuzawa on Wednesday! And it's rather warm today too with temps up to about 27 (and possibly the rest) with something of humid feel out there. Still, rain is due from sometime this afternoon and overnight tonight, possibly very heavy at times. A dramatic cool-down is due tomorrow too... perhaps even down to around 10C in town during the day and even lower still later on. It looks like there's even the chance of some snow falling very high up (!), according to some forecasts. So the weather is all over the place at the moment and something of a roller coaster ride. --- The 1500m main course at the Kagura ski resort remains open for this weekend. There's more ground appearing in places but still fairly decent snow on there, though rather 'dirty looking'. (See the image below from yesterday and courtesy of Kagura). You need to get Mitsumata Ropeway, the Mitsumata quad and then the Kagura Gondola to get over to the main Kagura area. Once there, the Kagura Number 1 high speed lift and the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift plan to be operating and servicing the open course. On the way back at the end of the day, you need to get the Kagura Gondola and then the Mitsumata Number 2 Romance lift. And then either take the Mitsumata quad back down to the Ropeway or slide down the artificial 'snow mats'. If you want to avoid using the snow mats, there's some walking involved - a total of about 900m on the way over to Kagura and about 400m on the way back to Mitsumata Ropeway. Mitsumata Ropeway plans to open at 7:30am on both Saturday and Sunday and operations will likely be back to how they are today on weekdays from Monday. --- Kagura is still hoping to be able to remain open until Sunday 27th May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and the last Yuzawa Now report of the 2017-2018 season. Yesterday was the last day of the ski season here in Yuzawa as the Kagura resort closed for the last time after fine weather over the weekend. They really did well to remain open as long as late May - especially with so little fresh snow falling since early March. A big 'otsukaresama deshita' to everyone involved in the season here in the town. Hopefully we will now enjoy some more nice spring weather before entering rainy season and then moving on to the hot summer months. Our reporting will be back in the autumn when things are starting to cool down. Thank you for reading and we hope you have a fun summer. --- Skiing and snowboarding on artificial snow mats will be available over summer as follows: Kagura (Mitsumata slope): Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 7th July until 28th October; and then daily between 28th July and 2nd September GALA Yuzawa: 'Summer Park' open on Saturdays and Sundays between 28th July and 24th September Plastic mats might not be for everyone, but it is definitely one way to get up high and avoid the full-on heat of the summer months! The big annual summer event in Yuzawa is the Fuji Rock Festival. The Fuji Rock Festival is held at the base of the Naeba ski resort, which is about 30 minutes from the central area of Yuzawa town and the main Echigo Yuzawa train station. This year the Fuji Rock Festival will be held from Friday 27th July until Sunday 29th July. The line-up traditionally includes an interesting mix of mostly UK/US acts as well as local Japanese artists. This year the line-up includes Bob Dylan, NERD, Kendrick Lamar, Vampire Weekend, Jack Johnson, Chvrches... and, as they say, much more. --- Here’s how much snowfall we have observed in Yuzawa town (in these Yuzawa Now reports) over the last six winter seasons: 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm So just over 8.5m in total for the season. That was not as much as last season, but double what we got during the 2015-2016 season. A respectable number for sure, but it has been a bit surprising just how little snow we got from early March onwards. 845cm of the 857cm total for the season fell by the end of February 2018! (Though please note that there was more snowfall at higher elevations). Hopefully we’ll see a much snowier ‘spring’ season next time around. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning everyone, and welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports on SnowJapan. That old cliché is true - time just seems to goes so fast. I'm sure it's speeding up. It doesn't seem that long ago since we were all sweating out a ridiculously hot summer and checking out the Fuji Rock Festival up at Naeba. Happily that heat is well behind us now and it has been getting gradually colder. Much colder. Over the last week or so it seems to have suddenly become considerably colder - over the last few days temperatures have been struggling to rise much into double digits during the daytime. Heaters are now being used! The autumn leaves are looking pretty spectacular at the moment and when the sun shines it is a truly beautiful sight to see. (See photo taken on Sunday 28th October below). And if that is not enough... check out the images from Kagura below - natural snow has been spotted high up! Exciting times. The Kagura resort this season plans to open on Friday 23rd November, so we are now just over three weeks away. Details and opening dates from other ski resorts around the area are still being gathered and we will post more details in a report over the coming weeks. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. UPDATE 12:30pm Kagura have announced that they will be opening tomorrow morning, Saturday 24th November. The 1,300m long (and 50-70m wide) main course will be open; and the Kagura Number 1 lift and Number 1 romance lift will be moving. First Mitsumata Ropeway at 7:30am! That's all the info available at the moment... full details tomorrow morning. --- Original report from earlier this morning Good morning from Yuzawa and there is good news to report. Kagura may not be able to open today as it had hoped to, but it is snowing - and snowing down to town level... and there's a thin layer of snow on the ground. It's rather wet, but it's snow (at the time of writing, might be rain in town as the day goes on) and it is the first down to town level this season. It will be interesting to see how much falls higher up by the end of today - and I will update you again tomorrow with any further info. --- Planned opening dates - subject to change of course depending on weather/snow conditions.
