It is a colder start to the day today with the temperature in village going down to around +2 degrees overnight. 1.5C at the moment and a high of around only eight degrees today, so not as warm as it has been. And get this... it is actually trying to snow at the moment. Quite successfully too in places even at base and up on the mountains - I can see close to white-out conditions high up on Happo and the snow definitely falling on Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47. It's not sticking really at the moment but of course it is always welcome to see snow falling. It almost feels like back at the beginning of the season somehow. Anyway it's due to clear up today so probably won't last long. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . New snowfall! Contrary to mounting evidence that it is actually 21st April today, we have fresh snow on the ground in Hakuba and as much as 15cm has fallen higher up on the mountains. Early on when I got up this morning it was poor visibility and a coating of a few cm of snow on the ground. Visibility has improved now as of 10am and the snow has eased off. I can see the lower slopes of the mountains but most of them are still covered in cloud and it looks like visibility up there is still pretty poor (still snowing?) Being able to play in some fresh snow will I'm sure make up for that though. It's keeping cold too. Yesterday it warmed up to around 10 degrees but today we are stuck down at around 2C. It sure doesn't feel like the second half of April today. In the coming week I think we will see it start to warm up again. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was just cloudy earlier on when I first looked out of the window this morning but rain is falling at the moment. Can't see much of the mountains as they are shrouded in cloud. And you know what, it looks like it is snowing at higher elevations taking a look at the Happo and 47 webcams right now. Yes, certainly looks like it, though visibility looks poor. Though I might just have to get up there to confirm! The forecast seems to be telling us to expect similar conditions tomorrow as well. Golden Week starts tomorrow with a 3-day long weekend in Japan. We then have three 'normal' weekdays, followed by a 4-day holiday run from next Friday until the following Monday. Temperatures didn't dip much under 10 degrees overnight after the warmth of yesterday, and still hovering around 10 degrees now as of 8:30am. So yes lots of cloud, not much to see, and a bit wet this morning. Hopefully the sun will be out tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Some thin cloud over the mountains but other than that it's lovely sunshine and fine blue skies over Hakuba again, making for a good end to the season (* see below!). Temps dipped down to around +3 overnight in the village but will probably rise to over 20 degrees later on today. There's a chance of rain later on according to the forecast, but hopefully that will be once the lifts are done for the day. Hre we were thinking that today was going to be the last day of the ski season in Hakuba. Well, apparently, not quite! Hakuba Goryu is planning to open it's top runs once again next weekend, the 11th and 12th of May, for one last go. If you fancy a last (last) run out, it'll be 2000 yen for adults and 600 yen for children. Other resorts don't seem to be planning to do the same with them all saying that today is the last day of the ski season. At the end of today, Monday 6th May, the ski season will officially close at the Hakuba Happo-one, Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike Kogen resorts. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . That's it then folks. Yesterday was the last day of the season for the Hakuba Goryu resort opened for the weekend, the day started off with some clouds amongst the mostly blue skies. This morning it's blue skies and already close to 20 degrees. Going to be another fine and very warm day here. There's lots of those ahead now as we move into "green season" proper. It's a long wait until the next snow in autumn, but lots of things to do in Hakuba during that time of course. It has been a good long winter though, so we should be thankful. You can relive the season with a look back through the archives of these Hakuba Now reports, which is what I have been doing the last few days. Some top memories of awesome snowfalls once again and excellent snow conditions. As with other areas, the heavy snow was perhaps not as full-on and prolonged at times as it has been known to be, especially down at village level, but on the mountains (where it counts) the resorts have been able to be operating through until May as usual. Of course, March 2013 saw things warm up a bit too much for everyone's liking, but then it cooled down again and even brought us snowfall in the last part of the season. There's still a lot of snow up there in the mountains for the more adventurous types, but now the ski resorts are all officially closed and are preparing to click into their summer season operations. The gondolas at the resorts will be open from the following dates: Happo-one - Saturday 25th May (until 4th November) Tsugaike Kogen - Saturday 1st June (until 4th November) Hakuba Goryu - Saturday 15th June Hakuba 47 - Saturday 13th July So you can get up there for some cool fresh air, hiking, and those magnificent views of the Hakuba mountains. Wind Moderate to strong Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Friday 25th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Wow it's a very snowy morning here in Hakuba. It started snowing late afternoon/early evening yesterday and it has obviously been busy at it overnight. How much has fallen? A lot. Asking a few people around different areas of the Hakuba and Otari region this morning and you'll get different numbers. I would say about 40cm here in a rather central location, but I have also been told 30cm and up to even 50cm by some excited friends. Take your pick. Basically, a lot.... and it is still falling now and not looking like it wants to stop. Snow of the heavier variety from where I'm looking. As for the resorts, Hakuba 47 are reporting 30cm of new snowfall at the base of the resort. Happo-one are reporting an increase of 30cm at Usagidaira this morning. Goryu have yet to update their report - perhaps snowed in! I'll try to update that later on when they get it updated. Tsugaike have increased their base snow depth by 50cm and Cortina are reporting 40cm on upper slopes. So anyway, heavy snow continues to fall, clouds and fog and poor visibility. For now though only a slight wind in the village but stronger winds on the mountain. Bit of confusion regarding lifts. Strong winds affecting lifts at 47/Goryu as the time of writing and Cortina is only part open. Happo seems to be pretty much open as planned though we can perhaps expect some lifts to be operating at reduced speed. And surprisingly it's not too cold either in the village this morning, about -3 right now at Happo base. Temperature up at Usagidaira at 1400m is -6.8C with an average NE wind speed of 2.4m/s. This heavy and ongoing new snowfall on top of the weak upper snowpack will have greatly increased avalanche hazard. Staying within resort boundaries is highly recommended in these conditions. Don't take big risks - stay safe and take care out there. There is a ton of fun to be had on the resorts with more than enough fresh snow for everyone. This storm is due to continue through today and tomorrow, perhaps into Sunday but generally calmer conditions forecast. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Friday 25th January 2013: Hakuba Goryu: 25cm of new reported on lower slopes and up to 40cm on upper slopes from Hakuba Goryu this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The snow continued yesterday and this morning resorts around the valley are reporting up to 35cm of new snowfall since yesterday. The Deep Award goes to Hakuba Cortina this morning with that haul on it's upper slopes. Goryu is reporting 10cm on lower slopes and 30cm on upper slopes with Hakuba 47 reporting 25cm of new snow on the upper slopes. I think we can safely say that whichever resort you choose today you'll be rewarded with some fine snow conditions. Yey! There hasn't actually been a huge amount of snowfall down at village level. The slightly heavier snow of last night changed to drier snow and it is still coming down now this morning. Probably 5-10cm of snow at base levels and just a few cm where I live. It's the snow on the slopes that matters, though, right? It is a cold morning and not going to rise much about -5C today in the village, in fact we are forecast to get colder this afternoon and into tomorrow. It is all grey and white out there this morning with generally limited visibility. Should be great out there! With all the new snow, we have some rather dangerous avalanche conditions at the moment and venturing out to avalanche terrain is not recommended. There has been around 10-15cm of it fall in the village overnight and up to 30cm being reported from the mountains around Hakuba and Otari this morning. Hakuba 47 reporting 30cm on the upper slopes, as is Hakuba Cortina. There should be a decent layer of new snow on all of the slopes in the valley this morning. It's snowing now and the forecast is for more snow today and tomorrow. Fair to poor visibility on the slopes this morning depending on where you are, and there's hardly any wind to report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Happy New Year from Hakuba. Yesterday it was snowing through the day on the mountains and Hakuba has dry, light snow covering the trails at present. It is snowing this morning as well with about 2-3 cm of fresh snow around the village. Not the brightest and clearest of days with overcast skies and mist hugging the valley... visibility is poor. Current temperatures between around -3C degrees in the village and of course colder out on the mountains. There's not much of a wind at present. Snow is forecast to be falling all day today and through into the following few days as well, so we can't expect to see much or even any of the sun this week. I'm sure people won't complain about fresh snowfall though! The Happo-one Sakka Kitaone Quad was temporarily suspended earlier but all seems to be moving as normal now. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A beautiful morning in Hakuba. Beautiful blue skies all around contrasting with the white of the snow on the mountains make for some stunning scenery this morning. On a day like today, the mountains of Hakuba can still leave you breathless, even for old hands like myself. After the winds of yesterday, all is calm. All is cold as well... Hakuba 47 reporting a temperature of -15C up at the top there this morning and not much warmer at base at -13C. Still, get wrapped up good and it should make for some fine conditions. Up to 5cm of fresh snow on upper slopes, just a sprinkling lower down. Maybe a bit more cloud tomorrow but generally clearer skies up until Sunday, when more snow is due. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a beautiful morning here in Hakuba - bright and clear with thin layers of cloud, but the blue sky is dominating proceedings today. Today is a blue bird day! It is also a cold start to the day, early on about -4C degrees and in the afternoon it should be the warmest at around 2C degrees. There is no wind around either, so it should be a pleasant day out. You want to know about snow? We had some decent snow coming down yesterday and while Goryu are officially reporting 5cm on their website, more like 15cm higher up. Goryu have 45cm as their snow depth (that almost seems too low to me), with Happo reporting 60cm. With the top-up yesterday though conditions should be certainly improved this morning for those lucky enough to be able to get out there. It does not look like any more runs or lifts are opening up though just quite yet. The forecast is still telling us to expect warmer conditions tomorrow along with more sun. Things start to look interesting from early Tuesday onwards though with snow lined up into next weekend and a real drop in temperatures once again.
