Yes, a few cm of fresh snowfall here in Hakuba this morning and resorts around the valley reporting up to 10cm of new snow on upper slopes (see below). Hurray! All a big chance from yesterday when we saw the mercury rise again and it got up to around 17 degrees as well. Very warm. March temperature records are being broken in many areas of Japan it seems this year. So it's sweet to have them drop right back down again. Overnight it got as cold as -3 at village level and right now at 9am it is -2C here and around -7C up on the Usagidaira (1400m) area of Happo-one. The snow is very likely going to ease off this morning completely and leave us with a fine and perhaps sunny day. Actually even now I can see more and more blue sky behind the departing clouds. Feels like it is going to clear up. It won't be getting as warm as it has been though and keep fairly cold (hopefully). Fairly strong winds this morning as well on mountain but resorts seems relatively unaffected. After this quick return to wintery conditions, tomorrow will probably be clear and sunny - and start warming up again. It seems that the Japan Paralympics starting today until Sunday 24th March at Kokusai 3 and Kokusai 1 lifts. Gambatte! Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Variable Posted on Saturday 23rd March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It got very overcast by the end of the day yesterday and this morning there's a lot of cloud lingering about. We actually got a dusting of snow down to lower slopes and resorts around the valley reporting 0-5cm of snowfall this morning. The 5cm award going to Hakuba 47. After rising to around 15 degrees yesterday, temps dipped to around +4 overnight and interestingly it is actually colder now at around 0 degrees as of 9am. Visibility out on the resorts seems to vary greatly this morning. Some places it's thick cloud and in others it even looks like the sun is managing to break through some clouds. The forecast does actually tell us to perhaps expect conditions to clear and it feels like that may well happen. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Interesting this morning. Quite cool and now about 7 degrees at Happo base and 5 degrees up at Usagidaira @ 1400m. Lots of low cloud around this morning. Early morning fog in the valley. Couldn't see much in front of me out on the roads earlier. Some of the views on show from the Happo webcams this morning were awesome - the lifts peeking over a complete cover of cloud. Amazing. Still looks pretty good now from up there, though the clouds have started to break up. In other areas visibility ranges from decent to poor as the band of cloud continues to hang around mid mountain areas. Yesterday was a really warm day out there. Temperatures roase to around 18 degrees at base and well into the mid teens on mountain - it was almost riding in t-shirt kind of weather. So a bit cooler today. A chance of rain today, lets hope that doesn't happen. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Some more snow to report from Hakuba this morning. Just a frosting and thin layer in base areas, but more up on the mountains. Hakuba Goryu reporting an impressive 15cm of snow on upper slopes this morning, with just 1cm at base. Hakuba 47 was reporting 3cm at base and 5cm higher up, with Happo one telling us that they got 3cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes. We have had mixed conditions today up until this afternoon with some blue skies peeking from behind the clouds at times, and then snow also falling on the mountains this afternoon. It has kept fairly cold during the day. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Today is going to be a fine day I predict. Not only with the weather - lovely clear blue skies - but also the fine new layer of snow. It was good to see some new snow low down at village and the lower slopes white once again, for however short a period of time. The snow down here in village has almost gone from where I am now near Happo and it will quickly disappear from those lower runs as well.... but it's great to see. (Obviously!) So, what about higher up on those mountains? Well, the only official numbers that I can find so far are from the Hakuba 47 resort, who are reporting 15cm of fresh snow up by R3. Not bad at all! Sounds like a good place to head for this morning. As I mentioned, nice blue skies and just a few fluffy clouds here and there. Temps will probably rise to around 10 degrees today. It is a colder start to the day today with the temperature in village going down to around +2 degrees overnight. 1.5C at the moment and a high of around only eight degrees today, so not as warm as it has been. And get this... it is actually trying to snow at the moment. Quite successfully too in places even at base and up on the mountains - I can see close to white-out conditions high up on Happo and the snow definitely falling on Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47. It's not sticking really at the moment but of course it is always welcome to see snow falling. It almost feels like back at the beginning of the season somehow. Anyway it's due to clear up today so probably won't last long. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . New snowfall! Contrary to mounting evidence that it is actually 21st April today, we have fresh snow on the ground in Hakuba and as much as 15cm has fallen higher up on the mountains. Early on when I got up this morning it was poor visibility and a coating of a few cm of snow on the ground. Visibility has improved now as of 10am and the snow has eased off. I can see the lower slopes of the mountains but most of them are still covered in cloud and it looks like visibility up there is still pretty poor (still snowing?) Being able to play in some fresh snow will I'm sure make up for that though. It's keeping cold too. Yesterday it warmed up to around 10 degrees but today we are stuck down at around 2C. It sure doesn't feel like the second half of April today. In the coming week I think we will see it start to warm up again. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was just cloudy earlier on when I first looked out of the window this morning but rain is falling at the moment. Can't see much of the mountains as they are shrouded in cloud. And you know what, it looks like it is snowing at higher elevations taking a look at the Happo and 47 webcams right now. Yes, certainly looks like it, though visibility looks poor. Though I might just have to get up there to confirm! The forecast seems to be telling us to expect similar conditions tomorrow as well. Golden Week starts tomorrow with a 3-day long weekend in Japan. We then have three 'normal' weekdays, followed by a 4-day holiday run from next Friday until the following Monday. That last day of Golden Week of course also marks the end of the season for all of the ski resorts in Hakuba and Otari (though unofficially there's still lots of snow left in the mountains of course...) ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Friday 26th April 2013 AM: Hakuba Goryu: The following lifts planned to be operating - Gondola, upper Number 1 and Number 3 pair lifts. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . So rain it is then this morning and it feels like it's set in for the morning at least. Temperatures didn't dip much under 10 degrees overnight after the warmth of yesterday, and still hovering around 10 degrees now as of 8:30am. So yes lots of cloud, not much to see, and a bit wet this morning. Hopefully the sun will be out tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Some thin cloud over the mountains but other than that it's lovely sunshine and fine blue skies over Hakuba again, making for a good end to the season (* see below!). Temps dipped down to around +3 overnight in the village but will probably rise to over 20 degrees later on today. There's a chance of rain later on according to the forecast, but hopefully that will be once the lifts are done for the day. Hre we were thinking that today was going to be the last day of the ski season in Hakuba. Well, apparently, not quite! Hakuba Goryu is planning to open it's top runs once again next weekend, the 11th and 12th of May, for one last go. If you fancy a last (last) run out, it'll be 2000 yen for adults and 600 yen for children. Other resorts don't seem to be planning to do the same with them all saying that today is the last day of the ski season. At the end of today, Monday 6th May, the ski season will officially close at the Hakuba Happo-one, Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike Kogen resorts. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . That's it then folks. Yesterday was the last day of the season for the Hakuba Goryu resort opened for the weekend, the day started off with some clouds amongst the mostly blue skies. This morning it's blue skies and already close to 20 degrees. Going to be another fine and very warm day here. There's lots of those ahead now as we move into "green season" proper. It's a long wait until the next snow in autumn, but lots of things to do in Hakuba during that time of course. It has been a good long winter though, so we should be thankful. You can relive the season with a look back through the archives of these Hakuba Now reports, which is what I have been doing the last few days. Some top memories of awesome snowfalls once again and excellent snow conditions. As with other areas, the heavy snow was perhaps not as full-on and prolonged at times as it has been known to be, especially down at village level, but on the mountains (where it counts) the resorts have been able to be operating through until May as usual. Of course, March 2013 saw things warm up a bit too much for everyone's liking, but then it cooled down again and even brought us snowfall in the last part of the season. There's still a lot of snow up there in the mountains for the more adventurous types, but now the ski resorts are all officially closed and are preparing to click into their summer season operations. The gondolas at the resorts will be open from the following dates: Happo-one - Saturday 25th May (until 4th November) Tsugaike Kogen - Saturday 1st June (until 4th November) Hakuba Goryu - Saturday 15th June Hakuba 47 - Saturday 13th July So you can get up there for some cool fresh air, hiking, and those magnificent views of the Hakuba mountains.
