Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 425cm Posted on Monday 4th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Your faithful weather reporter (me) is a little desk bound lately, but please know Furano is rocking it at the moment. I had a night ski last night and there was still knee deep powder down low. Down low, people... I am almost disappointed that it wasn't skied out! I think it means people are having such fun up high, by the time they get down low they are just thinking about lunch or dinner. So locals (ie people who have skied here all their live) are finding the snow a little heavy. I did notice it wasn't the usual light dry snow last night, but I didn't find it heavy by any standard other than Furano standard. It's still powder. I flicked it, tossed it, puffed it with a blast of breath, and other silly looking scientific methods. It is very nice. But yes, it's not as dry as normal. So the resort has the base at 225cm this morning. I am guessing it is more than that and it snowed most of the day if not all day. At 7am it was -7C and there was no wind. Everything is open and everything is lovely. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 455cm Posted on Tuesday 5th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Had great skiing today with a little person and found excellent powder on every run. On me (a tall person) it was thigh deep to knee deep, on my pint sized companion it was waist deep. Twice she lost her skis in it which made for some digging adventures but we found them. She loves side country! It snowed all day and possibly all last night. Even where it was groomed overnight there was between 10cm and 30ish cm on top at 9.30am. No wind today although we did experience one gust - it lasted less than a minute, we just stopped and let it go by. It was -7C in Kitanomine this morning, now around -5C. This snow last night and today is light and dry. I think we are back on track with normal Furano dry snow and it's good and cold. When I left this morning my neighbour was clearing about 15cm or so of fresh snow from the driveway. When I got home this afternoon, you almost couldn't even tell he'd done it. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Furano might get to see some sun tomorrow. Light, dry snow has fallen today and it still falling at present down in Kitanomine. The resort published this morning that it was snowing up top and cloudy down bottom at 7am. They list their base at 2.5m at the top and 1.3m at the bottom. I just took a look outside and Kitanomine base is uncrowded, it is snowing densely but small, dry flakes, and there is no wind. The snow is falling vertically to the ground. The resort is reporting 15cm fresh at the top and 5cm fresh at the bottom. Temperatures here were also at 7am. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 465cm Posted on Thursday 7th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Back to the dry, light snow we know and love. Last night I had a night ski and was pleased and relieved to find dry and light Central Hokkaido snow under my skis and falling all around. I have been loving the powder until now but with warmer low temperatures, it hasn't always been the ultra dry snow you cannot pack or roll snow-abdomens and craniums with. It's been great, but it hasn't been what we're used to. Last night there was still knee deep snow on the side of the runs right down low in Kitanomine zone. That's pretty awesome and tells me the powder stashes and pockets up high must be really deep. At 7am today, 5cm of fresh had fallen since the previous 7am check. Just in the hour I skied last night at least 2cm fell. But it compacts and drifts around. The resort is now (at 7am) estimating the top of the resort's base at 2.6m which is great. This morning it was -10C up top and -8C at the base of the resort. Now it's about -5C in Kitanomine Village which I reckon is perfect. No wind so it doesn't feel cold and it's cold enough to keep the snow fluffy. We have had another 11cm of fresh snow at base (with the resort reporting 5-10cm) and it is snowing light-moderately now with overcast skies. There's no wind at base and so very nice conditions to be out there. The forecast still has regular and consistent snowfall lined up for each day over the coming week so the excellent conditions should be continuing. Today is the first 'All Night' of the year with the resort open through the night from 8pm until 5am tomorrow morning for those of you wanting some overnight riding action. The Kitanomine Number 1 high speed lift will be operating with the open courses being the Junior, Family and Azelia. Next up for some 'All Night' fun is Saturday 30th January. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 499cm Posted on Monday 11th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . For most of yesterday there was a constant snowfall coming down on the resort, and the village, which meant there was a never ending fresh supply of soft powder on top of the runs. The day started off cloudy but that soon lifted around mid morning to give great views across the valley. Last night some moderate winds passed thorugh the village, but they have long gone and it is calm around the base area with some wind still around the tops. This morning it is particularly cold with temperatures into the minus teens, and for the next few days this level of coldness will stay with us. Snow should continue to fall through today, and tomorrow, getting lighter each day through until Friday, on which it seems we are due for a break from the snow. There has been another impressive 9cm of fresh snow at base over night. Happy powder riding to those who can get out there today. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 490cm Posted on Sunday 10th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good morning from Furano. There's 5cm of fresh snow to report from base here, most of which has fallen in the last couple of hours. It is currently snowing moderately so there should be some more decent accumulation during the day today. The forecast sees continued snowfall every day through towards the end of the week. It's really interesting comparing this season with last season - you can read through how last season went in the archives below. Furano is certainly being very consistent this time round! The photo is from the 'All Night' last night - no doubt there's probably a few blurry-eyed people around this morning. A good soak in an onsen should cure that. The Dynamic Course and part of the Training Course areas are hosting some pole training today and so won't be available to the general public but other than that the resort is fully open. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Wow, at -12c in the village it is feeling really cold, but luckily there is no wind whipping around today. Since yesterday there has been another 5cm of new snow meaning yet again it will be a day with a nice coating of fresh all over the mountain. We certainly have been lucky this winter with fresh snow a daily occurance since Christmas. The weather is overcast all over the resort and it doesn't look like the sun will break through today. The lower valley fog may lift and give a view of the town mid morning. Tomorrow the forecast is predicting very light snow through the day with broken cloud and possibly the sun making and appearance. All lifts are operating except the Downhill Swift Lift No.1 in the Furano Zone. It seems this may be out of action for a while pending repairs. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is going to be a great Wednesday with the sun already starting to break through the cloud and the resort sparkling in the sun. Don't be fooled by the suns rays though, it is still very cold out there with -12c recorded at base this morning. It is snowing really lightly at the moment but it looks like it may stop anytime. There isn't much to report in the way of new snow since yesterday - it feels unusual to say that given the snow bonanza Furano has had over the last couple of weeks. There is just a light dusting in the village but it is likely that there will be at least a few centimetres on the resort itself. More cloud should lift in the morning revealing more sun until late afternoon. Tomorrow will be cloudy again with increasing precipitation of snow, and Friday and Saturday are forecast to be at least partially sunny. Walking around the village this morning there was no significant wind or breeze, so it will be pretty calm on the mountain itself.
