  • Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 16th May 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 681cm Posted on Saturday 16th May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here. Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Tomorrow (Sunday 17th May) is the last day of the ski season at Yokoteyama, and therefore the last day of the ski season in Shiga Kogen. They did well to stay open until now. This is my last report of the 2025-2026 season. Archive reports are always available if you want to relive the season (or indeed previous seasons). While it's getting hotter down in the valleys, it's still not warming up too much here in our highland area. One thing I love about being up here! Anyway, thanks for reading and see you again in November. ---------------------------- A message from SnowJapan This message is being published on each of our daily report pages and is not specific to Shiga Kogen The season is now over for all but a few ski areas, and the last of our daily reporting for 2025-2026 has been posted. I hope that our independent reporting has once again helped many people this past ski season. With our large and wide-reaching readership from every part of the world, we feel a real sense of responsibility for the information we publish. A sincere thank you to the wonderful reporters who contribute to our daily reporting. It has been another long season with more unique stories from around the country. A general Japan season wrap-up seems inappropriate, given the vast differences across the country's many mountainous regions. Still, I think it's fair to say that in most regions, 2025-2026 was not a top-tier classic for Japan in terms of snowfall. But... that is comparing Japan with Japan – and, as we all know, that is a very high bar! All being well, later this year, a from-the-ground-up new version of SnowJapan will replace the current site (which has been online since February 2022). Work started on the new project over a year ago. I don't want to reveal details just yet, as there is still a lot of work to do and some things may change. The main goal of this renewal is to simplify and refine the site, keep things 'light', with a focus on improving core content and usability. It's a lot of work, but with all the foundations now largely in place, it is exciting to start seeing it all come together. Hopefully, the end result will work out as imagined. It might be a shock to the system when the changeover happens, but not to worry - the basic concept and values that have guided SnowJapan since 1999 are still very much firmly in place. The new site is expected to be ready by November 2026, and more information will be shared in late summer. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here. Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Today is going to be the last day of operations for the Shibutoge pair lift. And there is word around that Sunday will be the last day for the Yokoteyama lift. However, I can't find any official confirmation on the ski area website. So I can't confirm that. Perhaps it's a secret! We're expecting calm and mostly clear weather from tomorrow through Sunday. I'll post my (probably) last report on Sunday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 552cm Posted on Saturday 2nd May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here. Good Morning Spring Skiing Fanatics! If you were planning to ski today, looks like a big cancel. A strong weather front has moved in with some rain and lots of wind, so as a result the Ropeway is CLOSED today for wind. This is quite rare, as the wind has to be coming from a particular direction to affect Ropeway operations. Today is one of those days. The next two days don't look all that great weather-wise, but it looks like May 5 & 6 will be sunny, so a great way to finish out the season. Think snow. • Furano Now: Friday 8th May 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 552cm Posted on Friday 8th May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here. Another season done and in the books. So how was 2025-26 here in Furano? The visitors said "great!" The local powder people would say, "Meh." Like 2024-25, we were about 3 meters (or 40%) down from our 8-meter average. That still left over 5 meters of snowfall to enjoy, and the quality was good. There were no coverage problems at the resort, but there just wasn’t a thrilling amount of volume. Only one "dump" happened in my book, but I heard regularly from the back-country powder junkies that the good stuff was still out there, not as much mind you, you just had to go find it. I wasn't in a finding mood this season. Here's a telling anecdote: I didn’t have to dig my car out in the morning this season at all. Not even once. That usually happens a good half-dozen times per winter. Our snow came in dribs and drabs this year, but our dribs and drabs are pretty great. In contrast to the poor season in Europe, and the disastrous one in North America, we were flat out awesome. Still and all, my fingers are crossed for next year. After two below-average seasons in a row, surely next year will be better, perhaps even epic. Don’t take my whining lamentations to heart. I am quite spoiled living here. We’re all at the mercy of Mother Nature, and the waiting and expectation are part of The Quest for days that live in your memory forever. So, Furano has been down a bit recently. Others have had it much worse. Probably the hardest thing to communicate about the snow in central Hokkaido is the quality. It’s impossible to describe. The locals are agreed that when we try, people think we’ve been hitting the weed too hard, or we’re just exaggerating. The thing is, we’re not. You’ve got to touch it to believe it. And believe this: when it’s on, when there’s 2 feet overnight, or 8 feet over a week, you’ll never ski better powder in your life. No hyperbole - just a fact. See you next season. Think snow. ------------------------ A message from SnowJapan This message is being published on each of our daily report pages and is not specific to Yuzawa The season is now over for all but a few ski areas, and the last of our daily reporting for 2025-2026 has been posted. • Myoko Now: Wednesday 6th May 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1090cm Posted on Wednesday 6th May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here. I’ve been expecting to see a notice from Lotte Arai on the last day, but no official notice yet (and the days are numbered!). The scrolling notice at the top of the website does describe more open spots and rocks, and asks, “Please do not create bumps on the packed snow slopes.” Hehe. Good luck with that. Really high temperatures, and the Golden Week holiday is coming to an end, so expect the end shortly. I did take the Myokokogen Sky Cable gondola up at Akakan yesterday—something to do with my young big dog with boundless energy. There are still some snow patches up there, which delighted said canine (she has much more experience with cold weather than the double-digit temps we have now!). I believe it will stop running after today, the last day on the season passes. Rain tomorrow, which will also hasten the closing of the last operating resort. -- Akakura Kanko: Myokokogen Sky Cable gondola running today; will reopen in July Ski area closed Akakura Onsen: Closed Alpen Blick Resort Closed Myoko Suginohara: Closed Kyukamura RunRun: Closed Seki Onsen: 150cm, 8° Closed Tangram Madarao Tokyu Resort: Closed Madarao Mountain Resort: Closed Lotte Arai Resort: 50cm, 21° (don’t know why they had 19cm previously) Gondola and Zendana lift only Closing soon; will let you know when we do! I guess they had hoped to stay open until the 10th, but it’s already really marginal. The website notes that skiers will have to hike up to the Zendana area, and that dirt and rocks are now appearing across the slope. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here. I dropped into SnowJapan yesterday, and noticed that most of my fellow Now!ers are still reporting.... but I haven’t got much news, except now! And I almost forgot to report. Akakan is running the Myoko Sky Cable gondola from now until May 6, with restaurants open at the top. The snow is mostly gone, but it’s really nice out there today, so you might as well get some altitude. I haven’t heard anything for sure on when Lotte Arai will close, but with some pretty cool temperatures it seems like the snow—which was really disappearing fast—actually is holding up OK. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here. Hello from Shiga Kogen. Well, there has been a sprinkling of snow! Not much, and what was on the road outside my place has already disappeared, but just about enough for me to add 1cm to this report. I guess there might be some cm at higher elevations. It's pretty cold, too, but the sun is out and we have mostly clear blue skies this morning. It is usually much more stable weather with a good share of sun and warmth. --------------------- Ski area planned closing dates Plans to be part open daily until today: Okushiga Kogen Plans to be part open daily until 6th May: Kumanoyu Plans to be part open daily until mid-May: Yokoteyama Shibutoge Shiga Kogen Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Sunday 3rd May 2026 Total snowfall at base 680cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 69 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 43cm reported on 8 days December 2025 snowfall 161cm reported on 13 days January 2026 snowfall 337cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 97cm reported on 12 days March 2026 snowfall 32cm reported on 10 days April 2026 snowfall 10cm reported on 3 days May 2026 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Shiga Kogen. • Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 2nd May 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 680cm Posted on Saturday 2nd May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here. Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It's still windy this morning, but clearer and sunny. Yesterday Yakebitaiyama was closed due to the horrid weather, and they also announced that they won't be re-opening. So 30th April was effectively the last day of the season for that ski area. Rain and strong southerly winds really eat up the snow. (But have said all that, there was actually a bit of snow falling overnight. No cm to report, at least around the main areas). Okushiga Kogen and Kumanoyu both still plan to be open until Wednesday. If there's any change to that, I'll let you know. Yokoteyama and Shibutoge plan to continue beyond that. As far as I can tell, they are all planning on being open this morning. *** Update: Okushiga Kogen lifts on hold. Other lifts might also be affected. --------------------- Plans to be part open daily until 6th May: Kumanoyu Okushiga Kogen Plans to be part open daily until mid-May: Yokoteyama Shibutoge Shiga Kogen Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 2nd May 2026 Total snowfall at base 680cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 69 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 43cm reported on 8 days December 2025 snowfall 161cm reported on 13 days January 2026 snowfall 337cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 97cm reported on 12 days March 2026 snowfall 32cm reported on 10 days April 2026 snowfall 10cm reported on 3 days May 2026 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Shiga Kogen.
