The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it's definitely better than yesterday with dry conditions to start the day but lots of cloud. Whether the sun will appear later on or not we'll just have to wait and see. Both GALA Yuzawa and Kagura open as planned this morning. What else is there? Looking to the weekend we can probably expect sunshine and quite warm conditions on both Saturday and Sunday. --- Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Friday 8th April 2016): GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa resort plans to be open until Sunday 8th May. Four of the six courses in the Central Area and one course in the Northern Area currently remain open. The downhill Falcon course back to the Cowabunga base is now closed. Official snow depth: 90cm Kagura The Tashiro Ropeway plans to be open until 8th May. The Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be open until 29th May. All areas currently remain open apart from the Gondola east course and the downhill course back to Mitsumata car park which is now closed. Some rain lingering this morning but it's due to be a fine day with sunshine though temperatures not getting much higher than about 10 degrees - which is what it is now. There are some strong winds up on the mountainsides though this morning. While GALA Yuzawa does not seem to be affected (and open as planned), Kagura is affected - open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Number 1 lift. The Tashiro area is closed. Sunshine and warmer conditions are forecast for tomorrow, with temperatures rising to maybe around 20 degrees. There should be less wind as well and so expect both Kagura and GALA Yuzawa to be open as normal. --- Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Friday 15th April 2016): GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa resort plans to be open until Sunday 8th May. Two (Edelweiss and Melody) of the six courses in the Central Area, the 'playing in the snow area', and the Broadway course in the Northern Area currently remain open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Sadly it did start to rain in the afternoon yesterday and while it was on and off at times, heavy rain was falling later on last night. It's still wet though should be drying up this morning and it should be clearer skies by the end of the day. Tomorrow should be dry and there's a chance that the sun will be making an appearance (sun/cloud on the forecast) and once again temperatures should be rising to around 20 degrees during the day. It was in the local newspaper the a few days ago how visitor numbers to ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma have generally decreased this season - not really surprising given the shorter season and lack of the consistent snow that we usually have. The same report though did note that the number of foreigners visiting increased by 50% which is impressive. No doubt that number will continue to increase in the coming years. --- Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Friday 22nd April 2016): GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa resort plans to be open until Sunday 8th May. The Melody course remains open - with artificial 'snow mats'. The sledging area is also still open. Note that skiing and snowboarding on natural snow is now no longer possible at GALA. Special lower prices are now available (adults 2600 yen, children 1300 yen). Kagura The Tashiro Ropeway plans to be open until 8th May. The Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be open until 29th May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out and there is lots of blue sky this morning. Just a bit of cloud here and there and already a warm 18C degrees here in town. More fine weather is forecast for tomorrow so weather wise we are all good for the weekend it would seem. The big news today is that the GALA Yuzawa resort have made the decision that tomorrow - Sunday 24th April - is going to be their last day of the season. They will be open today and tomorrow with the Melody course (on snow mats) and a small sledge area remaining open. It almost seems inevitable with the snow situation that they have been faced with. That also means that from Monday morning it will be just Kagura that remains open. Their plan has always been to remain open until 29th May and they still have that on their official information, but with that over a full month away I think that there must be a fairly good chance that they also will be cutting that short. We shall see... The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was lovely weather yesterday morning, with it almost feeling borderline 'hot' at times rising to a fair bit beyond 20 degrees. Things got more cloudy during the afternoon and also cooled down a bit. Early this morning it's bright but it looks very hazy out there as well as there being quite a bit of cloud around. It's forecast to be a fine day though with the sun shining. It shouldn't be warming up as much as yesterday today. As mentioned yesterday, today is the last day of the season for GALA Yuzawa resort which means that from tomorrow just the Kagura resort will remain open in the region. Both the Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways remain operating, more details below. And in Kagura news, they have announced that from today the Panorama Course and the lower part of the Technical Course are no longer open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. We had to put up with lots of rain yesterday, very heavy at times as well. This morning wind is affecting operations at Kagura and just the area from Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 romance pair lift is open. Tashiro Ropeway is closed. There has actually been a bit of snow higher up as can be seen on the Kagura webcam images... none down here near town where light rain has been falling but actually just as I write this a bit of sun is peaking through cloud. Rain and cloud is what is on the forecast though. Tomorrow should be drier and somewhat warmer. --- Upcoming Golden Week holidays: * Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend) * Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week) * Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend) --- Resorts that remain open in Yuzawa on Friday 29th April 2016: Kagura The Tashiro Ropeway / Tashiro area plans to be part open until 8th May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out again this morning and it's a mix of cloud and blue sky up there to start the day. More cloud due later in the day along with the chance of some light rain around lunchtime or early afternoon. Sunny skies are forecast for tomorrow. It's not going to warm up much beyond 20C here in town over the next few days and the usual early May big warm up doesn't seem to be due over the coming week either. Which I'm sure lots of people will like! --- Saturday 7th May 2016: Kagura The main 1500m course at Kagura (and 'Kagura Park') remain open - get there via the Mitsumata Ropeway. On the way back to the Mitsumata Ropeway at the end of the day you can ski back down the Mitsumata plastic snow mat course if you like - or if you don't like doing that, you can ride the Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift back down. The Tashiro area has now closed for the season. Kagura still officially plans to remain open until 29th May but there is a good chance that will not be possible. --- All other resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are now closed for the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And the news is in... Kagura has announced that Sunday 22nd May will be the last day of the season. From today, 600m of the main Kagura run remains open and that is serviced by the Kagura Number 1 romance pair lift. That is the plan for these last 7 days, all being well. Kagura have done well remaining open for so long I think all things being considered. But it is good to have some definite news. It's sunny this morning with a high of 25C expected in town, while tomorrow will be cooler with some rain forecast for the morning. After that, generally clear and sunny weather is forecast for the rest of the week and into next weekend. --- Monday 16th May 2016: Kagura 600m course at Kagura and 4 items at Kagura Park remain open - get there via the Mitsumata Ropeway and Kagura Gondola. On the way back to the Mitsumata Ropeway at the end of the day you can ski back down the Mitsumata plastic snow mat course if you like - or if you don't like doing that, you can ride the Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift back down. All other resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are now closed for the season. --- Information on the upcoming 'Kagura Summer Gelande': What is it? A 1100m long and (up to) 50m wide course of artificial PIS・LAB 'snow mats', located on the Family Course of the Mitsumata area of Kagura resort. Includes a 120m run of 30 mogul-like bumps! The Mitsumata Ropeway and Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift will be operating to service the course. Dates: Open daily between Saturday 2nd July until Wednesday 31st August 2016; Open on Saturdays and Sundays between 3rd September and 30th October 2016. Open from 9am until 4:30pm. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today is the last day of the snow season at Kagura. Somehow – magic perhaps! - they have managed to remain open until now and are closing just one week earlier than originally planned. It must be said that they did very well. A big ‘otsukaresama’ to everyone involved. 2015/2016 season was definitely a strange one as you no doubt know if you have been following these Yuzawa Now reports and the other daily reports on the site. The northern island of Hokkaido seemed to have a something-like-normal season, but for most of the main Honshu island there was just way less snow than we are used to. While we still probably got more snow here in Yuzawa than lots of ski resorts around the world, for us it was very lean. After all, we are used to very regular deliveries of huge amounts of snow. Silly amounts. And don’t we just love those silly amounts of snow! Just compare the observed snowfall during 2015/2016 with the previous season: 2015/2016 season: 424cm 2014/2015 season: 1303cm Those numbers are how much snow fell here in town. Same place, same observer. It’s a pretty stark contrast, with over 3 times more snow falling the previous season. Less snow doesn’t mean that people didn’t enjoy themselves, of course. There were flashes of greatness here and there and I personally enjoyed many fine days out on the slopes. And I’m sure many other people did enjoy themselves. Timing was all important, perhaps more than usual. And there was again a noticeable increase in the number of non-Japanese visiting Yuzawa this winter. But let’s hope that for the upcoming 2016-2017 season we can get back to normal in terms of snowfall. And yes, I will very happily get out there twice a day with the shovel to dig out my front door and car. I promise not to moan…. rather, give thanks! --- During the summer months both the Kagura and GALA Yuzawa resorts have a course open covered with ‘snow mats’ for those who want to take a slide. It’s not the same as real snow of course, but a kind of fun all the same and lovely to escape the heat down below for sure. Best not to take new gear though... --- The Fuji Rock Festival is the next big event in Yuzawa. This year the main headliners for the festival are Sigur Ros, Beck and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and they are backed up by many more acts - mostly a mix of overseas and alternative style Japanese artists. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Welcome back to the 'Yuzawa Now' reports on SnowJapan. After a predictably hot summer, temperatures have really dropped over the last few weeks and it is positively chilly at times now - including early this morning, when temperatures were down to around 4C in town. The first snow of the season has also been spotted... first up on the higher areas of Kagura a number of days ago, and yesterday we could see snow on the top areas of the Makihata and Hakkai-san mountains in Minamiuonuma. It will be a while before the snow reaches down here to town and before most ski resorts open of course, but it always great to see the first snow of the season. Let's hope we are going to be treated to a season of heavy (but light!) and consistent snow this coming season. This morning there are clear blue skies all around. It really is a beautiful morning. The first ski lifts to move will of course be at the Kagura resort (via Mitsumata Ropeway), which plans to open this year on Saturday 19th November. So if all things go well, we are only two weeks from the start of the season! Most of the resorts in Yuzawa open in the second half of December. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow is falling this morning here in Yuzawa - down to town level as well. I'm going to award 2cm of snowfall for this report, and by the time it finishes snowing by lunchtime - so the forecast says - perhaps there might even be a bit more. Great to see snow falling outside the windows but it is not going to last long, so don't get too excited just yet. Tomorrow should be a bit warmer and we might see some sunshine. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. An early update this morning as there is some big news... Kagura is going to open today, officially starting the snow season here in Yuzawa. So what exactly is going to be open? Here's what the resort is saying: A 600m section of the main run at Kagura will be open. The course is 30-50m in width and the natural snow has been helped on by snow making machines giving what the resort reports as 50cm snow depth. Operating lifts are Mitsumata Ropeway, Mitsumata Number 1 quad, Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair, Kagura Gondola and Kagura Number 1 romance pair lift. All but the last one are basically operating to get you over to the course that is open. The lifts can be used to get back down as well, which means that there is no shuttle bus needed this year. The Mitsumata Ropeway plans to be operating from 8am until 5pm, with the last one going up at 4:30pm. So there we have it. It's very limited of course, but if you want to get skiing or boarding in Yuzawa... you can. What's more, it's a lovely morning here with the sun shining and some fine blue skies. Down here in town most of the snow that fell yesterday has now gone - or will be gone soon - and today and tomorrow temperatures will probably rise close to 10 degrees during the daytime.
