Hiuchi and the surrounding areas back behind Mt. Myoko. The gondola opens from 8:00am for 'first class' tickets and 8:30am for 'economy class' tickets. Both lifts close at 3:30pm (for everyone). I note that are also saying that their total cumulative snowfall for the season is... 2216cm. Yes, over 22m. It's fine this morning with some thin cloud. Unfortunately after today it looks as if there is a chance of some rain tomorrow through Saturday. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow actually slowed and stopped yesterday; the initial forecast is that it would keep on snowing and then get very heavy today, but that's OK. It's started up again in the last hour or so and is predicted to get crazy later in the day and into the night. Very dramatic life here. Interestingly, the snow is coming from the west right now; it will be fun to see what happens as it swings around to the northwest, which is the normal direction for the big snowfalls. Am I obsessing about snow conditions? Yes, I am, and that is what happens when you live here. It's funny when I think about it how much everybody around here, and not only snow reporters, does this very thing. We're watching and predicting and planning (no wagering, of course) because we have to deal with the results if we want to be able to move cars and get into homes, little things like that. I'm rambling, because I'm excited about another big snowstorm. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow started last night, and it's still going. It's not exactly a heavy snowfall by Myoko standards, but a nice accumulation of fresh stuff. The forecast is for snow throughout the day, and the really heavy stuff falling tomorrow. Got the machines out today, so we're ready for more. I suppose to people outside we're crazy: it's like mowing your yard and having everything neat and trim, and the next morning the yard is overrun with weeds. And you do it again. But we complain while we actually take pride in getting things in order (and then going up the hill to enjoy that snow, of course). Especially fun when, for me in the past few years, you get to play with some rideable heavy machinery to clear snow. More power! Warm cabin! The simple joys of Snow Country.... One note on the reports: I've noticed that, more than usual, the figures and reporting by the resorts is a bit, ah, uneven. Tough times, I know, and staffing is down, so we'll certainly give them a break, but the results can be a bit puzzling (see Seki Onsen below). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . This is an end of the year for the record books! I know you’re not going to believe the snow total—I don’t believe the snow total. It took 20 tough minutes to get to the boards I use to measure snow depth, and that’s over a distance of maybe 50 meters! Amazing, amazing snow. Very light and fluffy, after yesterdays’ very wet. packable snow. Which is why there is one caution for the day: the snow is totally unconsolidated, or unsettled. If you fall in the fresh, you have a meter-plus to try and stand back up in. For boarders, get upside-down and it can be really scary (well, really for skiers, too). I mean, there have been some bad accidents, so maybe enjoy on the piste for awhile, let this settle and then go slay the powder. It will continue to be good in the coming days, just not so intense. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another foot-plus day of fresh out there (for those who can think in Imperial numbers, which I hardly can any more). It's still coming down steadily; not particularly heavy at the moment, but enough that we'll have a few more centimeters by lunchtime. Tomorrow looks like one day off, then it turns on again for the foreseeable future. Meaning excellent holiday snow conditions. There's still a lot of brush out there beyond the ski area boundaries, but if anyone were to go out, it's good to be pretty careful; there's a lot of unconsolidated snow out there and sluffs could happen really easily. Nasty if you happen to be in a narrow valley, for instance. I notice that several of the areas have suddenly bumped up their snowpack figures. Maybe too busy yesterday digging to check! I thought things were a little sparse, numbers-wise. Looks better now! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We have a day of sun and blue skies after our multiple days of snowfall. Although I love having continuous days of the white stuff falling (seems like this is happening less and less), if is nice to have one day to let the sun warm up roofs (so snow slides off) and the roads (so driving is a little smoother). Oh, yeah, and to see the whole surface of the car without snow caked on everything. But it looks like the snow will return again tomorrow and keep visiting us all the way into the new year, so all good in that respect! The winds area coming in pretty strong along the coast from the west, and we are seeing some westerly gusts snow blowing off the roofs now. A good day to go out and enjoy that nice snowpack, on slopes that are pretty smooth and consistent (and no bare spots!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A sunny day yesterday, at least most of the day, and not overly warm, either! It actually took the whole day for the roof to warm up sufficiently for the deep layer of snow to finally slide off (of course, it feels and sounds like an earthquake inside the building as the snow rumbles off, which gets the heart going!). Roof avalanches (real thing)o are scary! A few people get buried every year. So stay clear of those houses and lift stations.... Snow keeps on a'fallin (I have no idea why I wanted to write that...just feels good when the snow is really coming down and the conditions just get better). Another 40cm or so since yesterday; it's quiet now but the forecast is for more heavy stuff into tomorrow. Yes, clearing all the snow is tough (it's a war...an ongoing battle), but you start to take pride in clearing things up very nicely and then getting out into the deep and bounce around. Must be a real local now (well, it's been long enough). All the main lifts are running now, so I'll just note where things aren't operating or something else comes up.
