About 10cm of it in the village and resorts reporting various amounts, but mostly around 20cm on upper areas with Cortina going up to 30cm of fresh. A good foot, I like that. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 321cm Posted on Wednesday 4th May 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . And so yesterday - Tuesday 3rd May - ended up being the last day of the 2015-2016 ski season here in Hakuba. I think the resort folk did really well keeping things going for that long, given the weather and amount of snow that they had to play with. A big ‘otsukaresama deshita’ to everyone involved. From today, you're going to have to hike up if you still want to hit any remaining snow. Do be sure you are equipped, know what you’re doing and take extra - it was on the national news last night about a number of climber/trekker casualties in the North Alps already this season. Let’s take a look back at what proved to be something of a ‘difficult’ season. First of all, if you are reading this while researching Hakuba - or any of the other regions covered by the SnowJapan daily reports - please do make sure that you read through the archive reports from previous seasons, as the season that has just finished really wasn’t a representative season. The 2015-2016 started on 28th November 2015 with the first ski lifts moving. But the season took a while to get going properly. And while we didn't know it at the time, in some ways things continued a bit like that in a similar kind of fashion through the season. One of the main characteristics of the 2015-2016 season – and this is not only for Hakuba and Nagano, but for most snow regions of Japan – was the relative lack of consistent and heavy snowfall and what seemed like often ‘warmer than normal’ temperatures. Those of us used to a Japanese winter are used to regular snow…and lots of it. Having to look to the forecasts and wondering when the next decent snowfall will come during peak season months is something that we are just not used to. Consistency of snowfall is something that Japan is rightly very proud of and can usually boast about, so everyone is very much hoping that for the 2016-2017 season we will be able to get ‘back to normal’ in that respect. Having said all of that we also did get some great conditions on mountain too, and for many there will have been many fine memories made and those days will hopefully be the ones that get remembered. Even a ‘less than average’ kind of season here would be a great one in other places and we need to try to remember that. Once again during this season I have talked to lots of people and most seemed to be very pleased with their visit to the village. Not just for the skiing and boarding, but for the atmosphere, the things that have been going on, the things to eat and drink and the friendly locals. There has been a further increase in the number of foreigners visiting Hakuba this past winter with many different languages being spoken. That trend shows no sign of slowing down and will surely continue into the coming years. 'When's the best time to visit' remains one of the most frequently asked questions. It’s always a difficult question to answer and sadly there's no guarantees with the weather - this season has definitely demonstrated that. You can come here mid-season and be unlucky with the timing; on the other hand, you can come early or late on and enjoy excellent conditions. The best thing that I can suggest is to sit down and read through the Hakuba Now reports here on SnowJapan from past seasons. There's a lot of reading to be done, but it will be worth it as the reports will give you a clearer idea of how things have happened going back more than a decade. And remember, we (SnowJapan) are not here to sell you a holiday… we’re here to pass on honest and trustworthy information! So now we head into late spring, the ‘rainy season’ and then into summer. Even here in Hakuba, the summer heat can be brutal - but we have the nearby mountains to climb and we are able to escape to higher altitudes. Ropeways will be operating to help you get up there. Please do check with the resorts for the latest information... they don't seem to have got their 'Green Season' mode into full gear just quite yet! Anyway that’s it from me for the 2015-2016 season and this is the last report of the season. On behalf of the good folks running SnowJapan, thank you for reading the Hakuba Now reports. We’ll be back again later in the year when things are cooling down and the 2016-2017 winter season is approaching. I believe that there will also be some exciting changes coming to the Now reports in time for next season which is something else to look forward to. Let’s also hope that the snow will be something to get very excited about as well. See you in autumn! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba where it is snowing, I am very happy to report. Resorts around the area seem to be generally reporting up to 10cm of fresh. As usual Hakuba 47 seem to be juggling what is open over there and reacting to the snowfall, but for the moment it looks like the other resorts that are open remain open with the same lifts and courses. For now. If this snow continues we can of course expect more openings very soon. Hakuba Cortina are this morning reporting 10cm which of course isn't enough to get open, but the forecast for the region is for continued snow today and tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 291cm Posted on Saturday 3rd January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. Cold day yesterday with spells of sunshine but lots of cloud remaining over the region. It's a cold start to today as well, 5cm on the ground outside my place and more snow reported from resorts around the valley. (Well done Cortina on up to 40cm once again!) It's windy out there this morning which is affecting some of the lifts at resorts. I have tried to add the latest as of 9:30am to the various resort info areas below. Changing conditions are expected today as the snow eases off and perhaps the skies clear somewhat. Hopefully the wind will ease as well. Visibility still limited higher up but in lower areas and back from the mountains there's already some blue sky to see. Sun likely tomorrow and Monday and it should not be as cold. --- Someone sent in a mail to SnowJapan asking about when the reports are posted. The answer to that is that they are posted as early as possible each day. Or should I say, as early as possible given the circumstances. Those circumstances being: a) it takes quite a bit of time each morning to gather and check all of the information required b) some of the required information is not posted early by the resorts themselves and c) I am human! No doubt many who are actually in Hakuba and wanting an early start will be eagerly looking out of the window at 7am and be out on the lifts before the report is posted, which is fine. Better being on the mountain than in front of a computer! I don't know the full details but I believe that the considerable readership of the daily Now reports on SnowJapan come from all over the world. Think of them more as an ongoing commentary of the season than an early morning pre-ski report. I hope that explains it a bit, gambarimasu. Actually writing that bit has delayed the report this morning... sorry! --- Official snow depth numbers and operations as of 3rd January 2015. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 301cm Posted on Monday 5th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Around 10cm of fresh snow being reported from around the resorts this morning in Hakuba. Just a slight wind and mixed conditions early on with a lots of cloud. There's blue sky behind them there clouds though and there are glimpses of those to be seen at times. Depends on where you are. Forecast gives us sun today and so we might magically see lots of this cloud clear up this morning and this afternoon leaving us with a very fine day. It really does feel magical when that happens. It's set to be milder later as well and tomorrow. Snow is back on the way later tomorrow but before then there's a chance of some rain, here at base anyway - hopefully (and probably) that will be straight into snow at higher elevations. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 303cm Posted on Wednesday 7th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. A bit of heavy (omoi) snow up higher yesterday, but it was raining in the village and at lower levels unfortunately with very mild conditions and strong winds. Not the best conditions that's for sure! But! It got colder overnight and there has been some snowfall. Just a few cm here around base areas. Bit more higher up (Cortina report up to 20cm). Hard and icy conditions lower down, and a bit 'dust on crust' as I have heard from a few people this morning. Could really do with another deep delivery to give us a proper refresh. There's quite a lot of cloud hanging on but also blue skies opening up now. Fairly strong winds again this morning which are affecting some lifts - details as I have them at the time of writing the report are noted below. That situation may well change. Once again it'll be fun seeing how conditions change over the day though local forecasts do seem to be saying we can expect some more snow today and into tomorrow and temperatures will remain low. --- Just a few days left to enter Stage 2 of the Lift Ticket Prize Draw if you are interested in winning lift tickets to some of the resorts around Hakuba - details here: SnowJapan Lift Ticket Prize Draw --- Official snow depth numbers and operations at time of writing on Wednesday 7th January 2015. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello on this middle day of the long weekend here in Japan. And there's fresh snow in Hakuba. Yesterday rather strong winds prevailed and there was no new cm of snow during the day. Lots of cloud, some snow falling, some blue sky at time and in places. A whole big mixed bag of weather conditions. As I said though, new cm snow of overnight on the mountains with around 10cm being reported mostly - Hakuba Goryu posting the larged number with 25cm of fresh up on Alps Daira apparently. Sounds good to me. Just a bit down here at base and at village level. Limited visibility on the upper slopes this morning - snow is falling and it looks pretty fog taking a look at the cams. I'll be up there soon to take a good look myself. Moderate to heavy snow is forecast for today so fingers crossed I'll be bringing in some more decent numbers in the report tomorrow.
