  • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 8th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this seas 903cm Posted on Sunday 8th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And a good morning it is, with a nice fresh coating of white. At SJHQ to the north of Yuzawa there is 6cm of snow on the top of cars. There's 11cm at our measuring point in Yuzawa. It is still snowing and limited poor visibility in higher areas. Higher areas will very probably have received more snow than that, so there should be some fun conditions to enjoy. Again, I can't find much of any snowy news and specific numbers from ski areas. If I find any, I will add in here or tell you about it tomorrow. But it might also be windy especially in higher areas. (The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed again due to wind). (The latest news posted by the famous Naeba ski area, and the follow up to news of their previous 'strawberry fair', is about an indoor kids room. Not a word about skiing or snowboarding or fresh snow. I promise to shut up about that kind of thing now! And in all fairness, the Dragondola account is mentioning 5-10cm). 5-10cm of fresh is not enough snow for a full reset, of course, particularly down at town level, but all the ski areas around town should be happy this morning. And I'm not embarrassed to be excited about it! (It usually takes at least 25cm for that, but... spring). There is more snow on forecasts over the coming week. Perhaps Tuesday and then Thursday/Friday. Keep it coming please. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this seas 913cm Posted on Monday 9th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been a good 24 hours. Perhaps unexpectedly, the snow continued yesterday and it's actually snowing early this morning too. We've seen an additional 10cm since the report yesterday (with just a small dusting of that from overnight). Kagura is reporting 3cm 'since yesterday'. It's so good to see everywhere good and white once again, and from what I gathered from a few people yesterday there was 20-30cm of fresh snow at higher elevations yesterday. The forecasts for today generally say cloud in the morning and some sun later on. Some say the sun might make an earlier appearance and there are actually a few signs of breaks in the cloud in some directions. As of 7:20am though, some light snow still lingering. We might get some more snow tomorrow, too. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 220cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 125cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 145cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 170cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 270cm Base: 130cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 190cm Base: 130cm Notes: Tanenokoyama pair lift and Prince Number 1 gondola not operating due to avalanche danger Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 145cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 90cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The downhill course is currently closed The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 150cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 9th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 913cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 50 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 30cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 914cm Posted on Tuesday 10th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The clouds did clear up yesterday morning and the sun came out. Some cloud did remain but it was a fine day weather-wise. We have had a dusting of snow overnight, though it's in the mm (rather than cm). Adding in the mm that we got post-report yesterday, I can just about justify the 1cm in this report. Perhaps some more cm in higher elevations again (?) Forecasts tell us to expect some snow during the day today. (And it is indeed snowing lightly in places). Onegai shimasu! Tomorrow might just be a cloudy day with clearer skies currently forecast for Thursday. We probably can't expect much fresh snow going forward, but temperatures not rising much would be a big help in us keeping what we have. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 11th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get snow falling yesterday in town - at times very light, at times somewhat heavier. It didn't end up with much in terms of new accumulation and the roads have remained clear, but with another dusting overnight on top of the car I can add 3cm to this report. Hopefully some more than that in the mountains. This morning starts with grey cloud cover. Forecasts differ regarding what to expect today - either largely cloudy for the whole day, or the clouds parting and us getting some sunshine this morning. Happily it shouldn't warm up too much with a high of around +3C or +4C forecast for town. Sun is expected tomorrow morning. In ski area news, I have noticed that the small Koide ski area (to the north of us in Uonuma City) has now closed for the season. Hakkai Sanroku plans to be open until Sunday (15th March). We'll be adding planned closing dates to the below list in the coming days. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 210cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 125cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 170cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 270cm Base: 130cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 190cm Base: 130cm Notes: Tanenokoyama pair lift and Prince Number 1 gondola not operating due to avalanche danger Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 165cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 90cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The downhill course is currently closed The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 145cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 120cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Wednesday 11th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Friday 13th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. We did get some blue sky yesterday morning but it was limited and it remained largely cloudy. It was quite cold out there, and in some ways it felt more like February than our actual February felt. If that makes sense... That lack of a big March warm-up is really going to help ski areas get to their planned closing dates. There seems to have been a dusting of snow at higher elevations, but nothing much. It was actually trying to snow last night when I went out for a walk. It is another cloudy morning and that is probably what we are going to get today and tomorrow. Some forecasts even say there might be some (probably very) light snow at times again. GALA Yuzawa is going to be open for night skiing tomorrow, the first of four this season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had a bit of brighter skies and even some blue sky early this morning but it's rather grey and cloudy now at around 10am. It might clear up later on. A sprinkling of snow again in upper areas, though no cm being reported. Without the sun it's keeping fairly cold, still. Again, that has really helped this March and even with some patches of ground showing in some town level areas, I'm guessing ski areas will be able to remain open until their planned closing dates in March. Whether higher resorts can continue through golden week etc is another matter. Sun is forecast tomorrow and we do expect temps to start rising during this week. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 18th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 18th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out and we have blue skies again, along with some mostly thin cloud. If forecasts are correct the cloud is set to increase during the morning and overnight tonight we will get rain (or snow in higher elevations). It might be quite wind out there. Friday is a national holiday in Japan and so we have an upcoming 3-day weekend. Where do we stand? Ski areas in Yuzawa and the big ones in Minamiuonuma remain open, but some ground is increasingly showing up on some lower town level runs, to varying degrees, and some runs are no longer available. Still, it is pleasing that they have all lasted this long, considering the weather we were having a month ago. A generally cold March has helped greatly. Generally, the higher up you go, the better the snow and the more complete snow cover remains. In fact, snow cover remains good and there is still a whole lot of fun to be had. Clear weather is forecast once we get into Saturday. I'm going to re-post this as the report was late yesterday and some might not have seen it... Yuzawa Town has released some interesting data. Below is the number of visitors to all ski areas in Yuzawa Town during the 2025-2026 season, up until the end of February 2026. The number in brackets is the change compared with the previous 2024-2025 season at the same point (end of February). Naeba: 278,420 (+4.4%) Iwappara: 215,500 (-6.3%) GALA Yuzawa: 213,500 (+8.3%) Kandatsu Snow Resort: 161,810 (+17.5%) Kagura: 150,650 (+34.2%) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort: 120,580 (-5%) NASPA Ski Garden: 72,420 (-25%) Yuzawa Kogen: 66,840 (+2.8%) Nakazato Snow Wood: 47,620 (-11.7%) Yuzawa Park: 25,780 (-7.1%) There does not seem to be any data from the small town level Ipponsugi. It is really interesting to see the big increase in numbers for Kagura, as well as the increases at Kandatsu and GALA Yuzawa. There appears to have been a significant decrease in numbers at NASPA Ski Garden, with Iwappara and other town-level ski areas also reporting lower numbers this season. Part of that is likely explained by the low snowfall at the start of the season and perhaps also by some people deciding to head higher for better snow conditions. We'll keep an eye on these numbers and post the final (or at least almost final) season numbers and more thoughts and analysis in the last report of the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did have some southerly wind yesterday and we start this morning with rain. Heavy at times. None of that is friendly to our snow, of course. Can't see any sign of snow on the roof of the quad lift building at GALA Yuzawa, perhaps it might be managing to snow higher at Kagura (just a guess). So it's not a very nice morning. (In fact, it's quite horrid! Rain is expected for much of the day, with the heaviest due early on. Tomorrow should be clearer and indeed over the weekend too. By the way, for those of you who are affected by hayfever might want to consider face coverings even if it warms up. Not so much today with the rain, perhaps, but with clearer and warmer weather. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. A blanket of low cloud over the Minamiuonuma valley to the north of Yuzawa early morning. We have lots of blue sky and some cloud. It should be a fine day, perhaps getting as warm as around 10C early this afternoon. There might be some precipitation (rain in town, perhaps even a bit of snow in high areas) overnight but tomorrow is also set to be clear and sunny. There's going to be a lot of pollen flying around the next few days. For those affected by sugi cedar pollen, face masks do help. (A bit). Some lower runs at some ski areas, particularly ones near or close to town level, are showing increasing ground and are closed off. Snow cover remains very good at higher elevations. Today is a national holiday and so expect today to be busier than a normal Friday. I heard some rain early morning but thankfully that has cleared and we have quite a bit of cloud up there still, but some and perhaps increasing blue sky. Forecasts do tell us to expect clear skies today, and tomorrow too. It should be a fine day weather-wise. I'm not hearing of any fresh snow at ski areas and can't sign of any on available webcams. Also not hearing about any possible early closings, either, but there is always a chance that there might be some sudden announcements over the coming days. For now, we can presume that ski areas will remain at least part open until their planned closing dates. General recap: Some lower runs at some ski areas, particularly ones near or close to town level, are showing increasing ground and are closed off. Snow cover remains very good at higher elevations. The total observed snowfall (at base) this season stands at 917cm. That will surely be the final number for the season. It's a really curious number, as it hasn't felt like we have had that much. Anyway, I'll post various thoughts on that in the last report of the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a beautiful morning - clear, blue skies and sunshine; and the sun should be warming us up today. Temps might rise to around 14C in town this afternoon. Let's spring skiing! Today is the last day of the season for the 'Yuzawa Snow Link' connection between Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama. That means the joint ticket won't be available, but it also means that the Ropeway connection between Yuzawa Kogen and Gala will be closed from tomorrow, and presumably the Southern Area of Gala will also be closed and possibly/probably also the top lift connection between Gala and Ishiuchi. Specific information from all three of the ski areas involved is a bit... vague. We'll find out tomorrow). The report tomorrow might be later than usual. Forecasts seem to indicate possibly clear conditions early morning but possibly cloudy beyond that. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 28th March and 4th April The downhill course is currently opening late in the day to preserve snow in lower areas The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 120cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 100cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 110cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 140cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 175cm (upper) Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 100cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 70cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 125cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 150cm Base: 70cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 115cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 80cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Sunday 22nd March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 23rd March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Monday 23rd March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was bright with an overcast hazy thin cloud kind of feel going on. It got as warm as 12.5C in town in the afternoon. We can probably expect similar today and indeed it feels rather warm now as of 10am. This morning started of mostly cloudy but the clouds have largely gone and we have sunny blue skies now. Cloud is expected later on, though, along with some rain, but we should be back to fine and sunny by tomorrow. Less than a week left for a bunch of ski areas in the region. Ski areas around town are now largely in 'part open' status as the snow retreats, but it is impressive that there haven't been a rush of early closings. They have done well to last this long. Snow cover higher up still remains good, and there's some pretty decent (spring) snow conditions too --- especially in the mornings. The lift connections between Yuzawa Kogen and Gala Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama are indeed all now closed for the season, though those ski areas all still remain open.
