Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 1024cm Posted on Thursday 24th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have just measured 15cm of new snowfall since my last report. It is currently -4C and probably won't get much higher than that. Milder conditions are forecast over the coming days though, particularly on Saturday. Visibility is varied, but as I write this it looks pretty limited at the Hirafu base. Snow conditions should be excellent. (Unfortunately, it looks like the top lifts are going to start the day on hold). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, calm, 15cm snowfall in the last 12hrs, no snowdrift development, good visibility. Moiwa800m: -8.1℃, WNW8.4m/s, light snowstorm, good visibility, snowdrift development has eased. Annupuri 1150m: -11.3℃, WNW8.2m/s, light snowstorm, good visibility, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu Peak: -13℃, light NW snow wind, minor snowdrift development. Hanazono 1000: -10.8℃, ENE3.1m/s, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development has eased. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NW14m/s, Kamui cape: WSW10m/s, 1013hPa, 1.3m waves. The isobars are moving apart and it seems the storm has passed. Snowdrift and cornice development has been massive over the last 72hrs, however they are starting to stabilise now. Peak gate openings yet to be decided, please respect the patrols decisions. Even if the gates open, avoid riding open cornice slopes and knolls above 800m, the avalanche risk continues. Avoid valley bottoms, this is where the avalanches run. This information is published for the safety of out of bounds resort riders. If one person ducks the ropes, others will follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Obey Niseko Rules. Today the mountain is a powder paradise. Take care not to fall into cracks. Beware a sudden weather change. Is your beacon on? Special thanks to all mountain staff who looked after the mountain during the storm. Have a good day. ----- Planned ski area operations: Thursday 24th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Tuesday 22nd February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 995cm Posted on Tuesday 22nd February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There's tons of new snowfall on the ground (and everywhere else) this morning... the (joint) most reported in one day this season, I believe: I have just measured 40cm. Hirafu is this morning reporting 55cm of snowfall. :) Yesterday, only the Ace Family quad at Hirafu, the Dream quad at Annupuri and the Community and Banzai lifts at Niseko Village got to open. I wonder if many people used them?! It was pretty wild. At least I think it was anyway - I spent the whole day warm and toasty and had a relaxing day. (But silly me, I went down the rabbit hole of reading the world news. Note to self - try not to do that again anytime soon). Anyway, back to this morning. Everyone is dealing with all the snow early on. It's still snowing, visibility is limited and there is still a bit of wind but it is definitely not like yesterday. More lifts should be opening, but may be delayed and the top areas remain closed. The gondolas at Village and Annupuri are closed, but the Hirafu gondola and Hanazono gondola are going to be open. A few things are absolutely sure. There's lots of fresh snow and the quality is excellent. But conditions are probably going to be challenging. Super care required. OK so now I am going to go get to work with my shovel. More snow incoming... ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6℃, light winds, heavy snowfall of wind effected snow, 35cm in last 12hrs. Moiwa800m: -8.4℃, NNW11.9m/s, heavy snowfall, major snowdrift and cornice development. Annupuri1150m: -11.5℃, NNW7.8m/s, occasional extremely heavy wind and snow, major snowdrift development, difficult for grooming machines. Hirafu1000m: -11.4℃, NNW12.7m/s, heavy snowfall, poor visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW19m/s, Kamui cape: N10m/s, 1007hPa, 2.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient has settled a little, however strong wind snow continues. There has been major snowdrift development and unstable cornice growth at all levels. Expect avalanches to easily occur from natural cornice collapses above 800m. At lower elevations also expect avalanches when cornices slopes and steep slopes like lift lines are carelessly stimulated. Suggested to stay off of areas like this today. Over 80cmof snow has fallen in the last 24hrs, with snowdrift development reaching 300cm in some locations. Around 1100m on 30deg slopes expect large surface slab avalanches with wide fractures, running at high speed, due to crushed crystal snow and wind. The avalanche risk on surrounding mountains is also very high. Peak gates will be closed, please respect the patrols decisions. When the wind calms down the snow will stabilise. The snow in the trees is deep and heavy, you will need skins or snowshoes to exit many areas. Is your beacon on? Special thanks to groomer operators for assisting in avalanche operations overnight. ----- Planned ski area operations: Tuesday 22nd February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Monday 21st February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 955cm Posted on Monday 21st February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning and it's a very wild start to the week. Heavy winds make it really difficult to say actually how much snow has fallen since the last report. There's places where there's probably 50cm and more, but that's (surely) because of the wind. My trusted measuring point, and a few other check points that I usually look at as backup, bring me believe that 20cm is representative. The biggest feature of the morning is the wind that is blowing the snow around. Hopefully the wind will become less severe later on, but we are expecting further snowfall for at least a few more days. Visibility is very low, avalanche rise is high. Even if any ski lifts get to open this morning (at the moment just a few lower lifts are indicated as possibly opening), I would say it is one of those day for learning new toast recipes or something less interesting than that. It doesn't feel safe out there. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6.5℃, blizzard, heavy snowfall, poor visibility, 50cm snow drift development. Moiwa800m: -8.5℃, WNW16.5m/s. Annupuri1150m: -11.2℃, WNW1.5m/s(max 35). Hirafu1250m: n/a. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW25m/s, Kamui cape: NW22m/s, 995hPa, 5.2m waves. Heavy storm conditions with snowdrift development at all levels. From data and observation, below 800m under lift lines and on course edges surface avalanches with over 50cm fractures are expected to occur. On Niseko and surrounding mountains the avalanche risk is very high. Regardless of underlying layers, snowdrifts developed during strong winds are unstable and are likely to collapse on weak lines. Be careful, avalanches are likely even in steep forested areas like Nitonupuri. Roads are also in white out conditions today. If you have to drive, go slowly and use your hazard lights, but better to stay in. This is a rare deep low pressure, with 12 isobar lines over Hokkaido. ----- Planned ski area operations: Monday 21st February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Sunday 20th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 935cm Posted on Sunday 20th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I bring good news this morning. We have had a very nice layer of fresh snow since yesterday. I measured 24cm of it and it is still snowing. It's not the lightest, driest and fluffiest of snow, due to it being (big picture) relatively mild. But tomorrow looks like it should be somewhat colder and more snowfall is due over the next few days as well. That all sounds good. Looks like the top lift at Hanazono might be a bit delayed but other than that everywhere should be opening as planned. I hope you have a good Sunday. I'm going to have some toast now. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -4℃, light winds, 25cm snowfall in last 12hrs, poor visibility. Moiwa800m: -7℃, light winds, 40cm snowfall in last 12hrs. Annupuri1150m: -7℃, moderate W winds, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Hirafu1250m: -7℃, W5m/s, 20cm new snow, crested snow drift development due to S wind overnight, poor visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW10m/s, Kamui cape: WSW9m/s, 1009hPa, 0.7m waves. We are currently under a north/south pressure trough which has dropped heavy snow overnight, easing at dawn. Crested snowdrift development slowly continues on the NW slopes due the southerly wind. From morning data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open depending on lift operations. Please listen to the patrols advice before exiting the gates. Snowfall is a little damp, low pressure crystal snow - relatively fast. At the moment slab formation is minimal, however be careful of fractures on steeper wind influenced slopes. Ride one by one. Be careful of cracks hidden by new snowfall. As this current weather pattern progresses expect a strong storm to develop. Act accordingly. There is no safety guarantee out there. The snow is good today. ----- Planned ski area operations: Sunday 20th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 911cm Posted on Saturday 19th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here About 5-6cm of snowfall overnight and a temperature of -6C early morning. Things are calm this morning and all of the lifts should be moving. We're going to enjoy some more regular snow though coming up in the week ahead. Fingers crossed! It's quite clear this morning and bright though some cloud still hanging around. All clear around Mt Yotei in a hazy kind of way, with a bit of fluffy cloud on the top. Kind of reminds me of that yummy strawberry daifuku I had yesterday. Anyway, it's the weekend again, so the Holiday pair lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the Jumbo Number 3 lift at Annupuri should be up and running to deal with the, er, 'crowds'. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -7℃, 10cm snowfall, light winds. Moiwa800m: -8.2℃, SE breeze,10cm snowfall, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri1150m: -11℃, WSW3.9m/s, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Hirafu1250m: -11℃, light winds, trace new snow, good visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: WSW5m/s, Kamui cape: WSW5m/s, 1023hPa, 0.5m waves. There is no atmospheric pressure gradient, the seas and mountains are calm. Overnight weak snow clouds moved through dropping 5-15cm of light crystal snow. However there was little snowdrift development. From data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please respect and follow Niseko Rules. Do not take beginners out of bounds lightly, their safety is your responsibility. Route selection should be based in reality, not in your dreams. A low pressure system is approaching from the west, beware a sudden weather change. It is difficult to read the slope in the poor light today. Be careful falling into cracks. • Niseko Now: Friday 18th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 906cm Posted on Friday 18th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday we ended up with some blue skies and bright sunshine. The temperature is -4C and that will probably get up to about -3C or -2C at base later on. So it's relatively mild. There is another 4cm of snowfall to report to you and some very light snow falling around the time I am writing this, but there's also a bit of sun shining through my window right now. And some blue skies to be seen in some directions. The shiny Gondola and Number 3 lift at Hanazono are apparently going be a bit delayed opening this morning. Something to do with maintenance/inspection. I hope we get some decent snow Sunday through Tuesday like the forecasts seem to show. It feels like we could do with a decent reset. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 3cm snowfall, light winds. Moiwa800m: -8℃, N breeze, 3cm snowfall, 40cm snowdrift development overnight. Anupuri1150m: -11℃, N5m/s, 5cm snowfall, 40cm snowdrift development. Hirafu1250m: -12℃, light winds at dawn, trace new snow, snowdrift development. Coastal data Benkei cape: NNE11m/s, Kamui cape: WNW2m/s, 1020hPa, 1.7m waves. A winter type pressure pattern has set up following the passing of a low pressure system. Only a small amount of snow fell overnight with minor cornice and snowdrift development. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before exiting the gates. Be careful, the new snow is just enough to cover the old hard tracks. The snow is good and your boards should run well. There is no safe zone in this sport. Be careful hitting trees and cracks. Sometimes you will lose visibility in bad weather. Always use caution. The patrol, groomer operators, lift operators and other mountain staff, all work together to give you a safer day on the mountain. • Niseko Now: Thursday 17th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 902cm Posted on Thursday 17th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, yesterday we got to enjoy some blue skies in the afternoon as the snow stopped. The small amount of snow I record today is from yesterday morning. It is an overcast kind of morning and it feels relatively mild, with a light southerly wind. I expect all of the lifts will be able to be opening as planned. When is the snow going to kick into a higher gear again? Maybe around late Saturday and Sunday onwards. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, calm, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -7℃, calm, no snowfall. Anupuri1150m: -7℃, E4m/s, no snowfall, good visibility. Hirafu1250m: -8℃, SE5m/s, light snowfall. Coastal data Benkei cape: S7m/s, Kamui cape: calm, 1007hPa, 0.7m waves. A low pressure system is approaching but the atmospheric pressure gradient remains flat. The wind in Shiribeshi is calm. There is no relevant snowfall, however yesterday’s southerly wind has made cornices and snowdrifts grow in spots above 1000m elevation in Hirafu side. The overall avalanche risk is low today. All gates will open. The whole mountain is tracked out. Be careful of overspeeding, losing control, hitting trees and falling in cracks. The weather may suddenly change as the pressure distribution moves. Stay prudent. This information is issued for preventing accidents in the out of bounds area around the resort. Please respect the Niseko Rules. There was a typo in yesterday’s information; the avalanche speed should have been 70km/h, not 70km/s. ----- Planned ski area operations: Thursday 17th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 16th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 901cm Posted on Wednesday 16th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's snowing now but not a whole lot to report, at least what I see and measured (which makes me really curious about the Avalanche Report today). But anyway, hopefully we'll get some cm today and in the coming days. Hmmm, it is a bit windy this morning and the southerly wind is affecting top lifts at the start of the day. Outside the weather meaning, everything feels so very calm and quiet. I can't think of many other words to use today, so I'll leave you until tomorrow and wish you a fine day. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 15cm low pressure snow overnight. Moiwa 800m: -7℃, S8m/s, 15cm snowfall, snowdrift development with easterly wind. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, heavy snowfall under 800m elevation, strong SE wind at 1000m elevation with poor visibility. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃, strong SE wind with poor visibility above 1000m elevation, heavy snowfall. Coastal data Bekei cape: S13m/s, Kamui cape: NE11m/s, 1006hPa, 1.0m waves. Heavy snowfall overnight as the low pressure system approaches slowly. Slopes above 1000m elevation have poor visibility with southerly storms. This current low pressure snowfall brings a lot of snow in a short time, when the snowfall exceeds 30cm, “flow-type” avalanches can occur on steep slopes. This type of avalanche is slow, less than 70km/s, but also occurs even in the forests. Be careful, as the snow increases, unstable slabs will develop and which can trigger high speed surface avalanches. As the wind and snow intensify, snowdrifts will develop rapidly with south easterly wind above 800m elevation and the risk of avalanche will increase. Snow in the tree runs is semi reset, it’s better not to go above the tree lines. The number of cracks in Hirafu/Hanazono area is increasing rapidly. Especially the crack in “Jackson” is getting bigger. Be careful falling into cracks. Most accidents occur during stormy conditions. Follow patrols instructions. Snow conditions change daily. ----- Planned ski area operations: Wednesday 16th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Monday 14th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 895cm Posted on Monday 14th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I have some decent snowfall to report to you this morning. Just a short while back I measured 15cm, so there should be a very nice new layer to enjoy out there this morning. Looks like the next few days is going to bring us a mix of cloud, light snow at times and maybe a bit of sun at times. Wind should not be a problem. For the moment it's cloudy and snowing at times - coming down at quite a rate just now in some places. That probably won't last and it doesn't feel particularly cold out there this morning. The long weekend is now over and so we are back to normal weekday operations. That means that the Holiday lift at Hirafu and the Jumbo 3 lift at Annupuri are taking a rest. ----- It's Valentines Day, that most traditional of Japanese customs, dating right back to the Edo period when... oh, hold on, I might have got that wrong. Anyway, ladies, don't forget to hand out loads of chocolate to pretty much everyone. (Even some you don't like, like your boss. Save the nicer chocolate for guys you like). Blokes will need to do similar on 14th March for the reciprocal 'White Day'... yet another Japanese custom steeped in tradition and rituals, also dating back to the Edo period. Maybe. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 15cm low pressure snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7 ℃, NNW7-10m/s, 15cm new snow in last 12hrs, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -8℃, N10m/s, 15cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m, -13℃, NE12m/s, 15cm new snow, snowdrift development. Benkei Cape NE9m/s. Cape Kamui; NNE4m/s, 1019hPa, wave 0.9m. Above 800m there has been some slow snowdrift development from wind and snow caused by a low pressure passing overnight. At dawn 15cm of low pressure snow had fallen. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. From the effects of the NE wind and snow plastering the upper mountain, there is a moderately high avalanche risk around 1200m on wind crusted and scored SE slopes like Kozan no Sawa side wall. If the crust breaks and avalanches on a steep slope it will take you away with it. Use caution. Snow in the forest is partially reset and good. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the Patrol's advice before exiting the gates. Niseko respects your freedom to ride out of bounds, but at the same time is concerned about everyone's safety. Please respect Niseko Rules. Be careful falling into cracks. • Niseko Now: Sunday 13th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 880cm Posted on Sunday 13th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. After a couple of days of clearer skies, we are back to some fresh snow to report this morning. Yey! There's not a huge - amount just over 5cm - and perhaps some more at higher elevations, but that's not going to be enough to fill in all the tracks. The groomers should be nice this morning though. It is snowing lightly at the moment, though it's also quite bright in places and as you can see from the third photo below there is even some blue sky too. The sun is trying to break through over here in Hirafu too as I type this. Doesn't feel quite as cold this morning, though it's still -5C. (I suppose for some of you guys that is really, really cold!) I think it's time for some lovely Sunday morning toast. Highly recommended. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 10cm low pressure snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7 ℃, 15cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, strong west wind, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m, -8℃, strong west wind, snowdrift development. Benkei Cape WNW13m/s. Cape Kamui; SW19m/s, 1017hPa, wave 1.4m. Wind picked up from 8pm last night. A low pressure system passed overnight bringing some snowfall and minor snowdrift development. From tests the general avalanche risk is low this morning. However snowfall is expected to continue bringing an increase in avalanche risk on SE slopes this afternoon. Lots of avalanche accidents occur by snowdrifts fracturing from rider stimulation. Developing snowdrift slabs are unstable and can easily fracture on weak lines. Always be careful of surface avalanches when winds are above 15m/s. Do not stimulate knolls or cornices. The snowdrifts will stabilise when the wind drops. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrol's advice when going through the gates. The mountain is partially reset above 800m although tracks are still visible. Visibility is bad, be careful falling into cracks. From the last 2 days of sun expect a 12 Feb layer to form as a future avalanche fracture face. Snow conditions change daily, be careful of sudden weather changes. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 874cm Posted on Thursday 10th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here My oh my it was very cold overnight! It's a beautiful morning with blue sky and sunshine. Cold and calm with just a bit of cloud here and there, but blue is the main colour of the morning. We certainly haven't had many mornings like this during this season and so I'm sure this weather will bring out a few extra people. There's not a whole lot of snow on the forecasts just at the moment, so it appears we are going to be taking a few days break in the snowfall. I doubt many will be feeling hard done by because of that. Really beautiful. Life is good. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -10℃, 5cm snowfall in 12h, calm. Moiwa 800m: -10℃, light breeze, 10cm snowfall with 40cm snowdrifts from westerly wind. Annupur1150m: -11℃, light breeze, 15cm snowfall with 50cm snowdrifts from westerly wind, bad visibility. Hirafu peak ridge 1250m: -12℃, calm, good visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: SSE3m/s, Kamui cape: NNW2m/s, 1024hPa, 0.6m waves. A high pressure system is sitting above Niseko, the pressure gradient is flat and the mountain/ocean weather is calm. There are no notable snowdrift developments and the snowpack is stable. The general avalanche risk is low. All gates will open. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions. The avalanche risk may be low, but there will never be a safe winter mountain. Overconfidence will lead to accidents. Staying prudent is key to avoid them. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 867cm Posted on Wednesday 9th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I know you come to these reports wanting to hear about fresh snow (and toast, of course), and this morning I have 16cm of it to report to you. I was out for a few hours yesterday afternoon when some very big flakes were falling from the skies. Very nice. There is even now some very (very) light snow falling in places, but it's a mostly a clearer kind of morning with blue skies among the remaining clouds. It's nice and sunny looking over towards Mt Yotei too. It should be another very good morning, and if the forecasts are correct we should be enjoying a fair bit of sunshine over the next couple of days. Yey. All lifts should be opening as planned this morning. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -7℃, light wind, 30cm snowfall in 24h, 5cm in 12h. Moiwa800m: -8℃, W10m/s, 15cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Annupuri1150m: -8℃, W10m/s, 15cm snowfall, snowdrift development 60cm. Hirafu1250m: -14℃, NW10-15m/s, 10cm snowfall, snowdrift development with wind blown snow. Benkei cape: NNW12m/s, Kamui cape: WNW9m/s, 1021hPa, 0.9m waves. Strong wind is blowing at times as we are on the edge of a high pressure system, snowdrifts are slowly developing above 800m elevation. The overall avalanche risk is low based on the observation and weather data. All gates will open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions and be prepared when you go out of bounds. Wearing a helmet and a beacon is not mandatory but we strongly advise you to do so. The cracks near gate 6 in Moiwa are developing. Be careful as it is not visible from above. A patrol had a scary moment while working yesterday. These cracks are formed as the snowpack is releasing its own tension. It does not mean it will immediately cause large-scale glide avalanches but this year may be different. It’s better to stay away from them. Do not enter strictly off limits areas such as Haru no Taki. The slabs in those south-facing slopes develop due to solar radiation, not due to the wind. The avalanche accident in 1998 occurred under similar circumstances. This information is issued for the people using chairlifts to ski the out of bounds areas. Beware of cracks and hidden tree-bombs and other obstacles. Have a nice day. ----- Planned ski area operations: Wednesday 9th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources.
