Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido

New snowfall at base 5cm
Snowfall at base this season 911cm

Posted on Saturday 19th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

About 5-6cm of snowfall overnight and a temperature of -6C early morning. Things are calm this morning and all of the lifts should be moving. We're going to enjoy some more regular snow though coming up in the week ahead. Fingers crossed!

It's quite clear this morning and bright though some cloud still hanging around. All clear around Mt Yotei in a hazy kind of way, with a bit of fluffy cloud on the top. Kind of reminds me of that yummy strawberry daifuku I had yesterday.

Anyway, it's the weekend again, so the Holiday pair lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the Jumbo Number 3 lift at Annupuri should be up and running to deal with the, er, 'crowds'.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Moiwa base: -7℃, 10cm snowfall, light winds. Moiwa800m: -8.2℃, SE breeze,10cm snowfall, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri1150m: -11℃, WSW3.9m/s, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Hirafu1250m: -11℃, light winds, trace new snow, good visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: WSW5m/s, Kamui cape: WSW5m/s, 1023hPa, 0.5m waves.

There is no atmospheric pressure gradient, the seas and mountains are calm. Overnight weak snow clouds moved through dropping 5-15cm of light crystal snow. However there was little snowdrift development. From data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please respect and follow Niseko Rules. Do not take beginners out of bounds lightly, their safety is your responsibility. Route selection should be based in reality, not in your dreams. A low pressure system is approaching from the west, beware a sudden weather change. It is difficult to read the slope in the poor light today. Be careful falling into cracks. Do not traverse cornice slopes. Have a good day.
