The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hey, what's this? More blue sky this morning! It is a beautiful morning. I have another (slightly over) 5cm of fresh snow to report, so not a huge amount, but we'll happily take it. I have been able to report fresh snowfall from base in every report since 16th December. Nice going. There is a chance that the amazing run will be come to an end tomorrow. Boooooo! Some more snow around Friday, but it's a much calmer and not-much-snow kind of run of days through into next week. That's what different forecasts seem to be saying at the moment anyway. Let's see what happens. There is a light northerly wind and it should be another very agreeable day out there. All lifts (that are scheduled to be open) should be opening, as should top gates. No news yet on the Hanazono gondola and when that might re-open. Next time I mention that will be when there is any related news. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -5℃, 15cm snowfall, light wind, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7℃, Northerly wind 10m/s 15cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9℃, NE10m/s, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu peak ridge: -11℃, strong wind, snowdrift development, 20cm snowfall on groomers. Coastal data Benkei cape: ESE5m/s, Kamui cape: ENE5m/s, 1016hPa, 2.3m waves. The atmospheric pressure distribution changed to winter pattern with the west high/east low pressure system from yesterday afternoon, and at 1,000m elevation, a weak northerly wind and snow continued until midnight, and snowdrifts slowly developed. The surface has been reset above 700m elevation with light crystal snow. According to the observation and weather data, overall avalanche risk is relatively low. All the peak gates will be open. Please seek advice from the ski patrols and be prepared before you go outside the gates. Cornice slopes above 1000m elevation and open steep slopes are prone to shallow surface avalanches in some places. The snow in the trees is nice again today. Beware of hitting trees. It’s highly recommended to wear a helmet. Visibility was good at dawn, and the moon could be seen between the clouds. There is no guarantee of safety in winter mountains. Have you turned your beacon ON? It’s cold in higher elevations. Beware of hypothermia and frostbites. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is a very cold morning and an absolute beauty! Blue skies, some wispy sort-of clouds and sunshine. Mt Yotei has decided that cloud hat is not required this morning and looking very elegant. And yes, just a bit of snow from yesterday. We haven't had many days like this this season so I am sure a (relatively, for this season) lot of people will be wanting to get out and up there. (And it might even be snowing again by later in the day). I have already had my toast and once I post this I'll be checking it out myself. All in the interests of being able to report to you, of course. I do take my duties very seriously. All lifts that plan to be operating should be open as normal this morning. (Hanazono gondola still closed). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -10℃, no snowfall, calm and radiative cooling. Moiwa 800m: -11℃, calm, some light snowfall and 40-50cm snowdrifts. Annupuri1150m: -10℃, W6m/s, partially crusty. Hirafu peak ridge: -13℃, calm. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW2m/s, Kamui cape: NNW2m/s, 1006hPa, 1.0m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the ocean and mountain are calm. The newly formed snowdrifts from the low-pressure snowfall are now stable. The western aspects above 1100m are crusted due to yesterday’s wind&snow. A light northerly storm is forecasted to start from this afternoon, but the general avalanche risk is relatively low today. Please seek advice from the ski patrols at the gates. Traversing can be the trigger of an avalanche. If you cannot trace the fall-line, you shouldn’t attempt riding a steep open slope. Some cornices have grown very big and can suddenly fall with a light stimulation. The snow in the trees is nice again today. Beware of hitting trees, they’re stronger than you. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have 12cm of new snowfall to report to you on this Monday morning. It's feeling relatively mild this morning and right now it's just -1C outside my place. Snow quality seems to reflects that, we can't have the top quality stuff every day. Forecasts seem to show the snow still coming in, perhaps in modest amounts on and off through this week. We might get to see some clear ski from time to time as well. Thankfully wind does not looks like it should be a big issue this week. Which would be nice. As for right now, just before 8:30am, snow has started to fall quite heavily as I prepare to post the report and visibility is quite poor in places. And Annupuri gondola hasn't opened as planned, not sure why... ----- I mentioned yesterday that the gondola at Hanazono was not moving at the start of the day. Since then they have announced that there are some staffing issues. Basically, due to a number of staff testing positive for COVID-19 and others around them having to not work due to that. That means that the gondola and night skiing will be closed for the moment. As far as I can tell there is no specific re-opening timeline, but I'll keep an eye on it and let you know when they are able to get going again. Annoying. Perhaps we should be thankful that places are able to remain open this season so far, though with rising (case) numbers in Japan who knows if the government might introduce restrictions... ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -1℃, 10cm new snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, NW10m/s, 20cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -6℃, NW10m/s, 20cm new snow. Hirafu Ridgeline: -7℃, strong winds, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW15m/s. Kamui Cape: NW11m/s, 1007hPa, wave 1.7m. A low pressure system passed through earlier this morning with 10-25cm new snow. Above 800m the surface is wind scoured but there is no significant snowdrift development. A Jan 16th layer has formed within the snowpack. From observation the snow conditions are good and the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates will be opened depending on weather. Around 700m in Mikaeri area the risk of full depth avalanches continues. Also a high risk of surface avalanches on Jan 2nd layer continues around 1100m in Kozan no Sawa. Be careful on these slopes. Don't wait in the valley bottoms. Forests are reset and good riding, however be careful hitting trees. Do not ski cut knolls, shallow avalanches are likely. A north/west light snow wind will set in following the passing of the low pressure. Be careful of a sudden weather change and poor visibility. You might need a backup pair of googles. Just a dusting of snow really since yesterday and under my own strict guidelines I think can just about justify awarding 1cm to the report today. I am happy to report that wind is not an issue and the top lifts are opening this morning and peak gates should be open too. Yey!! (Note that the gondola at Hanazono is currently flagged as being not open, not sure what's going on there). It's kind of fine, with thin cloud preventing that clear blue sky look. Should be snowing again by the end of the day... ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, light winds, no snowdrift development, trace new snow. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, light winds, trace new snow. Hirafu Ridgeline: -7℃, light SE winds, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SSE 3m/s. Cape: SSE 4m/s, 1017hPa, wave 0.7m. Check https://note.com/niseko_nadare/for mountain data. The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow in front of an approaching low pressure and the seas and mountains are calm. From the morning observation the snow has stabilized and the general avalanche risk is low. The snow in the trees is good. Peak gates are expected to be open. Anbetsu Gate 10 is also expected to be open. Please listen to the Patrols advice and be prepared before exiting the gates. Do not enter Strictly Off Limits area Haru no Taki. Beware of hidden cracks around 700m, there is also the risk of full depth avalanches. From snowfall transition evaluation the risk of a large scale avalanche continues in Kozan no Sawa( BackBowl) area around 1100-1200m. If we do get a big one it will run out the entire valley bottom clearing everything in its path. Don't ride the sidewalls. Leave your beginner friends at the ski resort and don't hang out in the valley bottom. There is no safety in this sport. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And yes, we have more snow for the start of the weekend. I have 15cm of snow measured to report this morning, which is a fair bit less than what the Avalanche Report is reporting this morning. But I think it's safe to say that there will be a lot of fresh snow out there to play in as the consistent snowfall continues. Following on from last year, less people around than what we were used to pre-covid means that the fresh lasts longer too. Anyway, I'm afraid the top lifts aren't open again this morning. There seems to be a bit of a delay with the lower Hanazono lifts, but hopefully they'll open quickly. (They are actually moving, so seems imminent). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, 40cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, 50cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9℃, 50cm snowfall, major cornice and snowdrift development. Hirafu Ridgeline: -7℃, heavy snowfall, difficult grooming. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW12m/s. Kamui Cape: N7m/s, 1012hPa, wave2.5m. Storm conditions have settled, however above 1200m NW winds are still around 15m/s. Slabs are starting to stabilize now that the blizzard has ended. From observation and data, avalanche risk has dropped below the treeline but the snow is heavy and deep. It will be hard to get back up out of it after a fall, beware suffocation. Consolidation of the wind formed slabs is delayed at all elevations, aspects and terrain types and the risk of weak layer fractures persists. Do not carelessly stimulate cornices and knolls, there is a high risk of triggering an avalanche. Today is still a day to stay close by the groomers below the treeline. All peak gates will be closed. Do not duck ropes to ride out of bounds. Be cautious today. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And this morning I have just measured a new 22cm of snowfall. As I look out visibility seems fairly decent but higher up it's still going to be limited. It's still snowing and it's still windy and unfortunately those top lifts are still resting. The Gondolas at Village and Annupuri also at a standstill, but other lifts appear to be open as planned for now. By tomorrow things should have calmed down considerably and that is going to be fun! If you are here, do take care out there. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 25cm snowfall, snowdrift development, blizzard conditions. Moiwa 800m: -6℃, NW18m/s, 30cm snowfall, cornice and snowdrift development, poor visibility. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, W20m/s, 30cm snowfall, cornice and snowdrift development, poor visibility. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I was expecting more, but I just went out and measured 16cm of snow for the report today. I would expect there was more on the mountain, with wind blowing it all around and causing headaches for lift operations. At opening time today those top lifts are still not opening and the gondolas at Village and Annupuri are also both at a standstill, so wind is still an issue. Hirafu gondola is moving but at a reduced speed, and both of the base lifts at Hanazono are moving. Forecasts all showing that snow and wind will be continuing today and tomorrow. Perhaps it might all calm down for the weekend? Conditions should be really good out there... once we are able to go and get them. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -2℃, 20cm snowfall with snowdrift developments. Moiwa800m: -6℃, 30cm snowfall, large snowdrift developments. Hirafu 1250m: -7℃, storm and low visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW16m/s, Kamui cape: NW15m/s, 995hPa, 3.9m waves. A strong wintery pressure distribution, the isobars are tight and the wind is blowing strong on the ocean and the mountains. The atmospheric pressure is rising and the wind is starting to drop, however 15+m/s wind and snow is still blowing above 800 elevation, making the snowdrifts develop drastically. 80+cm thick avalanches are to be expected in cornice/knoll terrains and leeward slopes with heavy snowdrift growth. All upper gates will be shut for the sake of all resort users. Please respect the ski patrol’s instructions. An avalanche in the Backbowl, Anupuri bowl (Osawa), Higashi-One cornice slope and Haru no Taki strictly off-limits area, will sweep down the whole slope and through the whole gully. Do not stay put at the bottom of gullies or steep slopes. Do not cross boundary ropes to step into off-limits areas. The snowcats are having a hard time grooming the course with all the heavy wind-affected snow and the course-side powder is dense and catchy. Beware of hitting trees. The snow in the tree-runs is a little tricky to handle, but not in bad condition. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 71cm Good morning from Niseko. A light dusting in places this morning and it looks like it is snowing the higher up you go. Hirafu is reporting 5cm in upper areas. There's limited visibility on the mountain early on with some thick fog. From base here I'm currently looking up at some rather dark grey clouds. Tomorrow is showing promise of fresh snow. That is good, as we need are in need of more snow for further parts of the mountain to open up and for runs be properly open. Being busy with various stuff this week aside, I'm waiting for a more pleasing covering to make my own debut. That is one of the luxuries of being here throughout the season, of course. I was interested to read some comments posted by the Hakuba Now reporter a few days ago (here). I don't know Hakuba well at all and so I am not qualified to make an informed comparison. However, while I understand that various circumstances are different from Niseko, Hakuba appears to currently be going through a similar kind of rapid 'inbound'-led transformation that we have had experienced in Niseko in recent years. I hope they deal with the situation wisely. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: light wind, +4℃, no new snowfall, overcast, visibility less than 800m. Coastal weather: Benkei cape WNW8m/s, Kamui cape SW16m/s, 1012hPa, 1.5m waves. Hanazono: 0℃, N3.2m/s, thick fog, poor visibility and light dusting. Mikaeri 800m: -3℃, SSE0.6m/s, light dusting, thick fog and bad visibility. Warm air is flowing north from the Sea of Japan. The temperature is above freezing up to 1000m elevation. Thick fog is lying up high. Moderate SW wind is blowing above 1000m. A little bit of snow fell overnight and shallowly filled in the gap of the surface. Avalanche risk is low, however still to be considered on the steep course-side cut slopes and cliffbands. The light is weak and the terrain undulations are hard to see. Beware of overspeeding, falls and collisions. One injury now can ruin your season. The slopes are crowded, please mind of others. The snow will eventually come. Very... grey. Niseko Village have 'light snow' on their page, but it's light rain down here. Hoping that'll clear up soon and forecasts seem to be predicting that. Wind isn't an issue this morning so all of the lifts that are scheduled to be open are going to be on time this morning. It's the last day of the snow season for Niseko Village. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The run of beautiful clear weather continues this morning. We might see some cloud tomorrow along with the chance of some rain according to some forecasts. Good job I have some other prepared words for you... ----- The 2020-2021 Niseko season so far: until the end of March 2021 Now that we are into April it is once again time for me to look back at the season and snowfall numbers so far - see how this season has shaped up compared with previous seasons. As always I feel I should start with this. I take my measurements from near the base of Niseko Grand Hirafu. There is usually more snow at higher elevations, but it is impossible for me to take measurements from the top of the mountain every morning for all sorts of practical reasons. My observed snowfall numbers on these Niseko Now reports over the years can be compared like-for-like, because they are my own observations and are coming from the same place each season. This is how much snowfall I have measured during the month of March over the last nine years: March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm I was a bit surprised when I saw that actually, because 79cm is more than I remembered. That is surely due to the fact that the bulk of that 79cm came right at the beginning of the month with just a few cm here and there beyond that. It certainly felt like there wasn’t much fresh snow during March. I recommend you take a look at the Snowfall Analysis page to check out the graphs and data tables to see for yourself how the snowfall was spread across the month. Those three digit numbers back in 2013-2016 still kind of stick out. That got me curious, so I took a look back at the Japan Meteorological Agency snowfall numbers recorded for Kutchan town. They recorded over 2m of snowfall in March of 2010 and 2011. But get this. 346cm of snowfall was recorded during March 1970 --- and during that 1969-1970 season the total snowfall was over 20m. Sugoi! More than usual there has been more time for people to think about various stuff this season - covid-19, the inbound market, how the heck will 2021-2022 shape up?, etc. All we can do for now is muse about these things and - sorry if I’ve said it before - hope for the best. Here is the total amount of snowfall observed at base this season: 2020/2021 season up to end of March 2021: 1201cm 2019/2020 season up to end of March 2020: 718cm 2018/2019 season up to end of March 2019: 945cm 2017/2018 season up to end of March 2018: 1247cm 2016/2017 season up to end of March 2017: 688cm 2015/2016 season up to end of March 2016: 986cm 2014/2015 season up to end of March 2015: 1141cm 2013/2014 season up to end of March 2014: 1150cm 2012/2013 season up to end of March 2013: 1459cm The total numbers still look really good. No doubt the marketing types will be latching on to some of those. ;) (* Hey... if you wish to use these numbers that I have spent the season putting together each morning, please give SnowJapan.com appropriate credit!) Other general comments I have about the season are going to be pretty much what I said in my recap last month. It has been unusually quiet and subdued, and lacking the usual mega-buzz atmosphere that goes on here especially in peak season. All for obvious reasons of course. Back to some numbers. This is how much snowfall I have recorded during the month of April in the last eight winter seasons: April 2020: 10cm April 2019: 6cm April 2018: 13cm April 2017: 0cm April 2016: 6cm April 2015: 3cm April 2014: 13cm April 2013: 32cm With temperatures often rising above average this spring, I think we’ll be lucky to get any more. The snowfall numbers that the Japan Meteorological Agency report from their observation station in Kutchan town are as follows: March 2021: 89cm March 2020: 75cm March 2019: 59cm March 2018: 59cm March 2017: 90cm March 2016: 125cm March 2015: 141cm March 2014: 118cm March 2013: 124cm 2020/2021 season up to end of March 2021: 949cm 2019/2020 season up to end of March 2020: 684cm 2018/2019 season up to end of March 2019: 867cm 2017/2018 season up to end of March 2018: 1013cm 2016/2017 season up to end of March 2017: 831cm 2015/2016 season up to end of March 2016: 823cm 2014/2015 season up to end of March 2015: 966cm 2013/2014 season up to end of March 2014: 922cm 2012/2013 season up to end of March 2013: 1024cm I think that's it for now. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. The sun is out and we have fine blue skies above us this morning. There's some cloud around in places, but it's the kind that compliments the fine weather rather than blocks it. A beautiful morning and wind is not affecting lifts. The Avalanche Report below is reporting some snow and does JMA, but the ski areas aren't reporting any and I can't see any cm with my own eyes to put on this report. Curious. Looks like there has perhaps been a dusting on the mountain. With the fine weather this morning I think an investigation is required. We might get some light rain overnight tonight. A southerly wind will pick up during the day due to the large pressure differential between the Pacific high and the Sea of Japan low pressure systems. Peak gates 2 & 3 are expected to be open but be careful of strong winds on higher ridgelines. Snow melt continues with the inflow of warm air. Be careful of block and full depth avalanches from sidewalls in the mountains. Stay out of the valley bottoms if you don't want to get hit by an avalanche. Lift operations finish at Hanazono today so gates 4, 5, & 9 will be closed from tomorrow. Today is the last day to ride Higashi One. Make careful route selection to avoid an accident. The snow is hard in the mornings but by 10am is starting to soften. Be careful falling into cracks and hitting trees. Wear a helmet. Wear a beacon, don't forget to turn it on and check the battery. Up above us this morning we have a pleasing blend of fast moving cloud, blue sky and sunshine in places - there's some big dramatic shadows on the slopes of our mountain at the moment and changing by the minute. During the day today and tomorrow we are expecting such a mix, perhaps with the sun being a major feature. It will be rather mild too. There's even another thin layer of snow too. If it were calm I'd say it was a lovely spring morning. I was worried that perhaps top lifts might be affected by wind but as of 8:30am it would seem things are opening as planned. Let's hope it stays that way. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report: 6:25am Benkei cape: NW11m/s, Kamui cape: SW10m/s, 1012hPa, 1.4m waves. Hanazono 1000m: -3.5℃, ESE2.8m/s. Hanazono 720m: -2.7℃, WSW3.7m/s. The sky cleared up as a high-pressure system approaches, however the wind remains strong as the pressure gradient is still steep. The strong wind moved some snow and developed snowdrifts and cornices. The cornice at Annupuri’s south peak has grown huge. The peak gates may open if the wind calm down and the peak chairs start running. Surface slab avalanche risk will remain high in steep 40° slopes throughout the morning. Better avoid wide open slopes and/or slopes under cornices in the morning. The climax avalanche hazard is rising as the season is shifting to Spring. These type of avalanches are extremely destructive, sweeping everything in its path. It is highly recommended to avoid hiking up or riding down the valley bottoms. Climax avalanches in Niseko can occur not only during the day but at night/twilight time even when the temperature is low. There will never be a 100% safe winter mountain.
