The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Looking out of the window it seems like it is a fine day. There's a fair amount of cloud in some directions, but lots of blue sky and sunshine too. Felt rather warm and a bit windy when I was just out a little while ago. Hopefully tomorrow will be fine too, though forecasts are showing the chance of some rain around Saturday. Today is the last day of the season at Niseko Annupuri ski area. Niseko Grand Hirafu ski area appears intent on keeping open until the original planned closing date (Sunday), the last day of the Golden Week holidays. For many in Japan, today is the first of five consecutive holidays. Today is Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi), tomorrow is Greenery Day (Midori no hi) and Friday is Children's Day (Kodomo no hi). And then it is the weekend, of course. By the way, sorry for the late report today. The reason? I totally overslept. Until 11:30am (!) That is very unlike me and I was quite shocked when I saw the clock. Perhaps by body is telling me that it is nearly time for hibernation! The top lift at Hirafu is on hold due to poor visibility, so for the moment just two lifts operating. Forecasts seem to show that we may see clearer weather later on, and maybe tomorrow too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko on this official last day of the 2022-2023 season at Niseko Grand Hirafu, Sunday 7th May 2023. The three lifts at Hirafu are open for today and it's calm and fine weather this morning. From tomorrow, all the ski lifts will taking a well-earned rest. Here are the final snowfall numbers for the season and previous seasons – as observed by me, at base, here in Hirafu: 2022-2023 season: 1006cm 2021-2022 season: 1137cm 2020-2021 season: 1210cm 2019-2020 season: 728cm 2018-2019 season: 951cm 2017-2018 season: 1260cm 2016-2017 season: 686cm 2015-2016 season: 989cm 2014-2015 season: 1144cm 2013-2014 season: 1163cm 2012-2013 season: 1491cm So, just over 10m at 1006cm. It’s always good to get into 4-digit territory! In terms of raw numbers, that works out as being just under the average of the last 11 seasons. Of course, it is important to emphasise that raw numbers are far from the whole story. The full story - from my daily point of view anyway - can be found in the archive reports. Check the links at the top of the page. What a season it has been! In many ways, 'almost normal', I suppose. It started with a lot of excitement in autumn when the Japanese government decided to open up the international borders once again. Potential visitors were excited. Businesses were excited. It was definitely excite for everyone. Businesses quickly realised their big challenge - having to get back into the swing of things after a few years of relatively relaxed (but not excite) conditions. Finding enough staff to cope with a sudden influx of visitors became a season-long headache. (And not just for Niseko, but seemingly for much of Japan). Many people who managed to get here were rewarded with a lot of really good and consistent snow through the main part of the season, from mid-December until the end of February. Then the delivery of fresh snow kind of dried up from the beginning of March. As a result, the 'spring season' has felt particularly long and drawn out this year. From the beginning of May 2023, Japan has dropped remaining border restrictions (i.e. the need for proof of vaccination or a covid test to enter). No doubt the number of foreign visitors to the country will ramp up further in the coming months. All being well, the 2023-2024 ski season will be a truly 'normal' season in terms of snow, weather, the experience.... everything. (It occurs to me while thinking about this that defining a 'normal' season has become increasingly difficult). After thinking about the weather and snow every day for the best part of six months, it's too early for me to start thinking about what next year might bring. So, for now, allow me a much-needed rest from all that. I’ll start paying attention come October. That’s it, then. I hope you enjoyed following the Niseko Now reports this year. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So after that lovely sunshine yesterday morning, we are back to fresh snow this morning. Double hurray! Ski areas are reporting 10-15cm early morning and it is snowing now. As I write this at 8:20am, it's moderate snowfall at Hanazono and light snow at Niseko Village. We should be getting more during the day today and tomorrow too. Visibility is looking variable as well, depending on where you are around the mountain. It seems like many regions of Japan are going to get sunny skies early in the coming week, and we are due for some of that too. All ski areas opening as normal this morning. I hope you have a good weekend. Quick off topic note: some of you have sent in some 'end of season' thank you messages to SnowJapan. I thank you very much for those messages, it is always nice to hear from folks. But remember, I've got another 2+ months to go as I continue right on through until the last ski lift stops in early May. From midnight to dawn snow clouds dropped 15-20 cm of snow on the coast side of the mountains due to the warmer sea temperatures in the Sea of Japan south of Rumoi and a cold airstream above 1000m mixing. Light winds caused only minor slabs development however snow is expected to continue intermittently today. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before going out of bounds. Do not use poor visibility as an excuse to enter strictly off limits areas. Surveillance is being increased and if you are caught you will be banned from using the ski areas. Do not ride under the lift lines near the Moiwa Quad Lift station, it is prohibited by National Cableway Laws. The snow conditions are good, but visibility is poor. Beware falling into cracks. There is no safety in this sport. Always be vigilant. Accidents can be prevented by being careful. Don't stay in the bottom of gullies. Avalanche comes from above. Is the beacon on? But after a phone call with a trusted friend, I believe all should be fine with this 'remote' report! I will keep it short. Cloud and blue sky this morning, with just a little fresh snowfall. Wind still appears to be an issue this morning with top lifts on hold at the start of the day. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -11C, scarce snowfall overnight. Moiwa 800m -10.1C, SW2.8m/s, large development of snowdrifts and cornices. Annupuri 1100m: -12.5C, W6.7m/s, cornice development. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.9C, W2.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.4C, WSW1.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -8.3℃, NNE4.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape WSW3m/s, Kamui cape SSW12m/s, 1027hPa, 2.0m waves. Clear morning under a high pressure system. Cornices and snowdrifts development has stopped now, however the strong northerly wind that persisted until late last night made cornices and snowdrifts grow huge and changed the terrain in some spots. 150cm thick slides from Feb 25th low-pressure layer was observed during tests at 800m elevation this morning. There’s a huge difference between windblown and windloaded areas. The avalanche risk is high in open steep slopes of heavily wind exposed bowls in the western side of the mountain. It is highly recommended not to ride large terrains such as the Backbowl today. The snow is good in lower elevation treeruns, however the snow is windpacked and heavy. The temperature is forecasted to rise today and make the snow melt. Beware of new cracks forming and/or falling into creeks. All gates are scheduled to open. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. There is no guaranteed safety in this sport. Have you switched your beacon on? Is your airbag functioning properly? The wind will eventually pick up again, beware of sudden weather changes. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It was windy last night and still quite windy this morning and what feels like changeable conditions this morning. Light snow is falling, though there is some blue sky to see in places, and visibility also looks quite varied at the moment. At 8am I measured just under 20cm snowfall and I note that Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting up to around 30cm on upper elevations. Very nice. Unfortunately, at the start of operations, wind is affecting some lifts. All of the top lifts are going to be on hold, as is the Annupuri Gondola. Others seem to be opening as planned. Clear and sunny skies are lined up for tomorrow, along with some milder temps. Hopefully less wind too. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4C, 15cm new snow, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.3C, W10.0m/s, strong wind and snow, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -12.8C, WNW7.6m/s, poor visibility, blizzard. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.5C, NNW5.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.6C, NE8.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -10.2C, N6.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW14m/s, Kamui Cape NNW11m/s, 1020hPa,2.5m waves. Major snowdrift and cornice development due to strong N winds overnight. From observations and fracture tests at 800m, slab like snowdrifts are fracturing easily. The avalanche risk on cornice slopes and knolls is high above the treeline. Peak gates are expected to be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol's decision. Conditions are dangerous taking a high traverse from Hanazono Gate 5. The avalanche risk is rising in the Higashi One 3rd Creek area due to continued snow accumulations from the N winds. Also out of Moiwa Gate 6 today, conditions require care. Unstable snowdrifts are continuing to grow. Do not traverse from Annupuri Gondola Gate 8 to the center ridge cornice slope. Accidents have occurred in the past under similar conditions. Do not duck ropes. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Best not to stray too far from the ski runs today. Beware getting lost in poor visibility. Carry a beacon. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have a few mm over 20cm of snow to report, which is a very nice thing to be able to report on this national holiday (Emperor's Birthday). Expect more at higher elevations. It is a bit warmer this morning actually. Some forecast tell us that there is a chance of some spots of rain later on in lower areas and town (boooo), but hopefully it will be snow at higher elevations (hurray). Whichever, neither seem set to be heavy. Tomorrow might also be on the milder side with colder temps due for Saturday. For the moment, it is snowing. Niseko Annupuri have started to seemingly not update their new snowfall numbers again, so I'm on the verge of taking that out of the report like I did with Niseko Village. It's kind of frustrating, for sure. I am not arguing over specific numbers. (I know very well what a minefield that is!) It's the 'not updating' thing. But beyond that minor frustration: fresh snow, yey! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4C, 20cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.9C, SSW0.9m/s, 25cm snowfall, snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1100m: -7.1C, W6.0m/s, 30cm snowfall, snowdrift developing. Mizuno no Sawa: -4.9C, W2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -7.1C, S1.4m/s. Hanazono#3: -4.4C, ESE1.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSE4m/s, Kamui cape SW9m/s, 1018hPa, 1.5m waves. Wind has come down in the morning, 25cm new snow slopes at 800m elevation, tree runs are reset. Westerly wind and snow continued throughout the night mainly around 22:00, 70cm snowdrift development in the last 12 hours on the slopes at 800m elevation. From the observation and weather data, the avalanche risk on the slopes under the 1000m elevation is low. 50cm snowdrift development on the slopes at 1200m elevation in the Kozan no Sawa sidewalls due to the storm during the night, though the avalanche risk is starting to stabilize, still remains high in the morning. Wind and snow will temporarily intensify as the cold front passes at 10am. The avalanche risk increases as the slab formation develops in the strong wind. Do not stay in the gully when the storm begins. Avalanche is a natural phenomenon but it becomes an accident when a person gets caught in it. Most accidents occur during the storm. NIDE’s observation ends today. The purpose of these tests is to study the structural vulnerability of snowdrifts and its changes. We believe that the scientific clarification of this phenomenon will be useful in preventing future accidents. We are grateful to the many people who have proved with their own experience that avalanches do not occur on slopes with stable snowdrifts, even if they jump off the cornices or knolls. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I'm a bit later than usual this morning. No, I haven't been chomping on toast. Instead, there is much to check this morning and lots of information to update. More ski lifts and runs are open from this morning across the mountain. Basically, most areas are now open - apart from those top lifts and associated runs. I won't go through the details here; please check the lists below to see those. Floodlit night skiing also starts today, and I have noted which lifts operate below. It's called 'night skiing', but the lifts close at a relatively early 7:00pm or 7:30pm. I remember the days (quite a while ago) when night skiing was until 9:30pm. I'm pretty sure I remember that correctly. I am curious as to the reasons for such a change. Silly me, I almost forgot! I have measured another 20+ cm of lovely snowfall since yesterday. There should be some fine conditions to enjoy this morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8℃, light winds, 30cm snow in last 12hrs, good visibility. Moiwa 700m: -9℃, light winds, 40cm snow in last 12hrs, some snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -13℃, heavy snowfall, poor visibility, 40cm snow in last 12hrs, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: WNW 10 m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW 11m/s, 1018 hPa, wave 2.5m. The isobars have started to move apart and snowdrift development has slowed. Snowfall has increased, changing from heavy wind crushed crystals to light crystals. Snowdrifts have started to stabilise near the treeline at 800m, however stabilisation at 1000m on SE slopes is delayed and the avalanche risk will continue. Stay off steep slopes at 1000m and creek sidewalls this morning. Beware large scale surface avalanches triggered by rider stimulation. The snow in the trees is good, be careful hitting trees though. Do not duck ropes. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, increasing the chance of an accident. Watch for sudden weather changes. I can just about justify the 1cm in my report this morning, and hope that there will be more to report tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will be more of the fluffy variety, too, along with colder conditions. The 8cm of fresh snowfall reported by Hirafu at base this morning is... how should I phrase it... interesting. As is the jolly impressive 45cm (!) of 24h fresh snowfall at base that Niseko Village is showing on the official United site. (Yeah, that one is clearly a mistake. I'm guessing it's the snow depth). Come on, guys. Anyway, we patiently wait for precious gifts from the skies and a dose of excite. ------------------------------------ Here's something I posted a few years ago about the name of Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area. As someone asked a related question recently, I thought I'd repost it: The ski area opened as Niseko Hirafu in 1961. It changed its name to Niseko Kokusai Hirafu in 1970. Kokusai means ‘international’. There were quite a few ski areas in Japan using that word in their name. Ironically, that was back when skiing in Japan was far from being 'international'. In 2004, the ski area's name was changed to Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu. And in 2021, it officially changed to its current name, Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu. Omoshiroi! By the way, Tokyu comes from the name of the company that owns and operates the ski area. That company has also had various name changes but always included the 'Tokyu' bit. The current company name is 'Tokyu Resorts & Stays'. But they also have 'Tokyu Snow Resorts' on their website. Let's try not to be confused! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: +2℃, 30cm snowpack. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -7℃, SE1.5m/s, snowing and bad visibility. Hanazono 800m: -1.4℃, N3.0m/s (NE23m/s gusts at midnight). Coastal weather: Benkei cape NNW5m/s, Kamui cape SW7m/s, 1012hPa, 1.1m waves. No snowfall until predawn, but started to fall around 6am as the next Low Pressure approaches. The Cold Front will pass in the afternoon and the weather is forecasted to deteriorate. The snowpack remains shallow and the slopes are not suitable for skiing except the groomed runs. Patience is required. Depth hoar is developing with the recent large temperature swing. This is quite unusual for early Winter in Niseko and can potentially be a trigger layer for glide avalanches. Caution is required in steep slopes on the course-sides and/or with bamboo-grass. Surface slab avalanches, which are the cause of most accidents, mostly occur during snowstorms or other bad weather conditions. Leeward slopes with heavy snowdrift deposits should be avoided during strong winds and snowfalls. Weak bonding within the newly formed slabs can easily fail and trigger a slide. Hello Skiers & Boarders, I don't know what the conditions are up on top, but down in town the sidewalks are treacherous as heck with the recent melt/re-freeze. Sigh...December. It's also the scariest month for driving, hands down. Once things properly freeze up, the ice on the roads and sidewalks becomes much grippier. I endure December. I am happy to report that we are ending the season with some clear weather. Here are the final snowfall numbers for the season and previous seasons – as observed by me, at base, here in Hirafu: 2021-2022 season: 1137cm 2020-2021 season: 1210cm 2019-2020 season: 728cm 2018-2019 season: 951cm 2017-2018 season: 1260cm 2016-2017 season: 686cm 2015-2016 season: 989cm 2014-2015 season: 1144cm 2013-2014 season: 1163cm 2012-2013 season: 1491cm We didn't get quite as much snow as last season, but it was still an impressive turn out and consistent too. I reported snowfall (at base) on 99 days – and on 30 of the 31 reports in January! No complaints with the snow. All sorts of interesting snowfall data can be found within this report section, so please do take a look around. Of course, 2021-2022 was another season without the inbound visitors, and it has once again been strangely quiet. While the snow is obviously super important, I have noticed that the people (and the atmosphere they bring) certainly add a special extra aspect to the experience. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces again soon. I'm not sure how some smaller businesses would cope with yet another year of the same. We can only hope that we are not faced with that prospect. There's nothing to report to you regarding Japanese international border restrictions. All we can do is wait and keep fingers crossed for changes that will allow people to come next winter over the next six months. This is the third time I have signed off the season hoping for a 'return to normal'. The thinking and policies regarding the covid situation seem to be improving around the world and things do feel different from this time last year. Still, other things are going on in the world right now that feel far from normal. Let's normal, please! I hope you enjoyed following the reports this year.
