Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 46cm Snowfall at base this seas 639cm Posted on Monday 26th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow clouds stuck around all yesterday and are still over us this morning. I am very pleased to report another (total) 46cm of snowfall since yesterday morning. Over the last 24 hours it looks like the snowfall was concentrated right over Yuzawa town and to the south in Minakami and neighbouring towns in Gunma. The current early morning light snow is expected to stop sometime this morning and we will probably get some sunshine tomorrow morning. Beyond tomorrow there's more snow on the weekly forecasts; looks promising. Needless to say, after all this fresh snow, conditions should be pretty great everywhere. In the end, over the last week we have gone from there being a below-average amount of snow around to what now looks much more like 'normal'. Large icicles included! (First time noticed this season). This makes me happy. Moving forward, what would be perfect would be if we could get into a pattern of regular snowfall, with some clearer skies from time to time, and temperatures remaining cold. That until the end of March. ;) Official snow depth numbers published by ski areas are looking much improved, too, though some I think are lagging behind on updates. I'm a bit early today, too. I'd love to know how much snow there's been up at Kagura the last week or so. Alas, as noted perhaps too frequently (sorry), the don't consistently say and most ski areas are quiet about those numbers. Oh well. Regarding our own measurements, at the end of January 2025, 638cm of snowfall had been recorded in these Yuzawa Now reports. As of this morning, that number is 639cm. A significant improvement in the last week. It's going to be fun to see how the rest of the season shapes up. February last year was pretty mad. Oh yes, GALA Yuzawa made an announcement about the Southern Area at that ski area. There needs to be enough snow and various preparations/patrol be ready for it to open... and apparently there're not quite there yet. Hopefully soon! I'll let you know when there's any news. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 280cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 240cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 220cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 170cm Notes: Status unclear this morning ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 195cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 270cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 330cm Base: 210cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 200cm Base: 170cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 210cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 80cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 160cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 160cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 26th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 639cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 28 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 483cm reported on 18 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow did stop yesterday... lingering for a while but not giving us much more than a further dusting. This morning we have cloud cover but some forecasts tell us to expect some clearer skies and sun this morning. There is already some breaks in the cloud and signs of some blue, though still largely cloudy at 7:15am. I was woken up again at around 5am, this time it was the noise of wind but hopefully wind won't affect ski area operations this morning. And there might be some snow to report again tomorrow morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this seas 654cm Posted on Wednesday 28th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Very early clouds quickly parted yesterday morning and we enjoyed some sun and blue skies, particularly up until mid-morning. It was snowing later in the afternoon and this morning there's 14cm of fresh to report from town base. It is snowing and there's more expected over the next few days, possibly heavy at times. Looks like a few top lifts at Kagura are affected by wind this morning but other ski areas opening as planned. Interesting to see the snow depth number that Muikamachi Hakkaisan is reporting - 370cm up top. That is the most in the region and perhaps demonstrates how areas to the north of Yuzawa have had more snow. A question was asked about snowfall and how it shapes up over a season. As a very eager student (* not expert) of this subject for several decades, a few thoughts. The raw data on how much snow has fallen each season is, of course, very interesting. I spent much time looking at it and comparing. (You can too in the archive reports in this section). This season was a slow start, but we have done some good catching up in recent days. But while the actual snowfall numbers may now be comparable with last season at this stage - we actually have now had more than last season - there's still visibly less snow than there was at this point last season. According to photographs I have taken. The reasons for that will surely mainly be when and how the snow falls, and what happens between the incoming snowfall - warm periods, rain, southerly winds, etc. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 270cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 220cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 155cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 220cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 260cm Base: 210cm Notes: Both base Ropeway bases are open but some lifts affected by wind ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 200cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 275cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 370cm Base: 240cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 210cm Base: 180cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 215cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 260cm Base: 130cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 165cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Wednesday 28th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 654cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 30 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 498cm reported on 20 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. 18cm of snowfall since yesterday morning with most of that coming overnight; it was snowing yesterday but it was the kind that didn't really amount to much in the end in terms of new cm. We expect more over the next few days, possibly heavy at times. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 30th January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this seas 722cm Posted on Friday 30th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We sure seem to have a lot of snow now! The last week or so, in particular, has really brought us a lot and it has piled up very nicely; without any warmth or rain to spoil the snowy goodness. In fact, with todays haul, the observed snowfall for January 2026 makes it the most ever in January (since our records started in 2012-2013 season). There's going to be more to report, tomorrow, too. This has almost sneaked up on us. Anyway, yes, since yesterday and after two clearings of the measuring spot, our observed snowfall number is a tidy 50cm. In Minamiuonuma just to the north, it's well over 60cm. Yuzawa Park reporting 38cm of fresh snow. (Well, done, Yuzawa Park! I can't find any other numbers reported by ski areas). I actually had to go over to Tokamachi city yesterday. They have serious amounts of snow over there; more than Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. Until now I had only been looking at the snow maps etc, but seeing it in person was fun. Roads were pretty dangerous, though. Still, we're doing well here too. It is still snowing this morning but only lightly at the moment. At times there has even been a hint of light blue behind the clouds and it has been relatively bright, but that is probably temporary (if forecasts are correct). Only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura open today due to strong winds. Other ski areas appear to be opening but there may be some delays as they deal with all the snow. There should be more to report tomorrow to give us our snowfall total for January 2026. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 31st January 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 29cm Snowfall at base this seas 751cm Posted on Saturday 31st January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It is still snowing! A bit windy too with the snow being blown around when I was out just earlier. Webcams show a rather mid-winter picture, too. Up at our measuring point in Minamiuonuma, just north of Yuzawa, there has been well over 50cm more snow since yesterday. As has been the dominant pattern this season, that is more than we have actually received in Yuzawa (where the measurement for this report comes from). Todays Yuzawa snowfall number takes the observed snowfall for January 2026 to 595cm. Mad. And such a contrast with what we got in December! Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed this morning due to the wind, but the Mitsumata Ropeway base going up to Kagura is going to be open (up to Kagura Number 1 pair lift). The official snow depth at Maiko Snow Resort is now up to 330cm. Kagura and Ishiuchi at both at 310cm. Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa are both reporting a snow depth of 300cm. Southern Area of GALA opening coming soon? (That is based on no official information whatsoever... more a hope!) We're now probably at the point where ski areas actually hope for the snow to stop, with just regular manageable installments of fresh snow from now onwards. Too much snow puts lots of people off; not to mention transportation issues. When is it going to stop? Well, perhaps there'll be less snow today, but there is some more expected tomorrow. Looking at various forecasts, it does look like we are probably past the peak of this particular significant delivery of snow. We might even get some sunshine days by mid-week. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 260cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 310cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 200cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 270cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 310cm Base: 280cm Notes: Only the Mitsumata Area is open today ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 265cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 330cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 350cm Base: 230cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 230cm Base: 190cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 280cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 160cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 200cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 240cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 31st January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 751cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 33 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa on this first day of February. Time is whizzing by. We had some more snow since yesterday but not that much in terms of cm. There were a few glimpses of blue sky and sun at times in the afternoon, and by night time to skies seemed quite clear. This morning starts off cloudy and all forecasts have us down for more snow and it looks like it might already be snowing higher up. (Perhaps just light snow today, rather than the heavy style). Wednesday and Thursday look like they will be day with much clearer skies and sun, though we might get some bits of that before then. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 785cm Posted on Thursday 5th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. An early report this morning. We had beautiful weather yesterday with clear blue skies and sunshine. It got very mild in the afternoon, though, approaching +6C in town mid-afternoon. Today will likely be quite similar to yesterday with sunshine expected and perhaps even slightly warmer temps by this afternoon. Bit too warm. Come Friday it should start getting a bit colder again, which is good, and all being well there will be a fresh layer of snow as the weekend starts. As forecasts stand right now, we should be having a cold and snowy weekend, so keep that in mind if you are visiting. Quite how much snow to expect... unclear. Good news from GALA Yuzawa ski area – their Southern Area is scheduled to open this morning for the first time this season. The Eliza, Batman and Bronco B courses should be open. It has taken a while as we waited for enough snow and the required preparations to be made, but it’s really good to see it opening at last. The Landau Ropeway connecting that Southern Area with Yuzawa Kogen should also be open today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Beautiful weather yesterday... but too warm, rising up to over 8C in town mid-afternoon. We lost over 50cm of snow in my garden over the last two days. (There's still a lot there). Today is not going to be as warm and actually get colder from around lunchtime. As of 7:40am we have a lot of cloud around. We might have to put up with some rain, but snow is forecast for later on and also tomorrow and Sunday. Forecasts seem to vary regarding how much snow we should expect across the next several days; some say it will be heavy snow.
