The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is getting on for 11am as I write this. I know, I am naughty. There has been a dusting of snow, but not enough for me to add any cm to this final report of February 2025. My total observed snowfall for the month stands at 196cm. I will put my thoughts together over the weekend and post my monthly update thingy on Monday. OK so this morning has been bright and sunny with a fair amount of cloud too. Kind of hazy looking over towards Mt Yotei at the moment. And it is rather warm. Japan Meteorological Agency is saying it was 5.5C at 10am at their Kutchan measuring station (away from the mountain). Top lifts on hold again this morning, I'm afraid, due to pesky WSW winds. As the Avalanche Report says there is (or was!) some windload snow in the tree runs. The Hanazono Number 1 lift was moving earlier this morning, but is has stopped and the chairs have been taken off the cable. I do not know what the problem is there. But as you can see from the image below, people are waiting to be taken elsewhere so it doesn't look like it will be opening up again anytime soon. (They really should charge more to use that lift... you know, for maintenance, or something. Perhaps they could also open it for some 'night skiing' - after 'evening skiing' closes - and charge 25,000 yen per person. I'm full of jolly good ideas this morning!). Sorry, I'll try not to be silly for my monthly review. ;) Things should be getting colder again from Monday and hopefully we will get fresh snow. Have yourself a lovely day. My report will be late again tomorrow but I should be back to more normal times next week. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, no snowfall, clear sky and radiative cooling. Moiwa 800m: -3.5℃, ESE 0.5m/s, 40cm snowdrifts and cornice development from yesterday’s wind, good visibility. Mikaeri 750m: -9℃, WSW2.4m/s, calm, good visibility and slight snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -5.3℃, WSW6.5m/s, light snowfall and cornices development. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4.8℃, SSW8.6m/s, no snowfall, good visibility, snowdrifts development in some areas. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSW2m/s, Kamui cape SSW20m/s!!, 1013hPa, 1.4m waves. Strong SW wind is persisting in high elevation and making cornices grow. There’s no new snowfall, but winddrift slabs of 20-50cm are forming in leeward slopes. Looking at test results and weather data, the avalanche risk is relatively low today. Gates opening is not decided, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Windload snow, up to 20cm, is covering the tree runs. Pretty good but beware of the firm bottom. It looks like Spring is just around the corner. Unstable slabs are developing in Mt Yotei 1200m SE aspects due to SW wind coming from the looker’s left. Windload snow are made of accumulations of firm crystals, making it dense and heavy. These are structurally very unstable while they accumulate. They can fracture instantaneously and cause a surface slab avalanche. It is highly recommended to not stimulate knolls and steep slopes. Avoid gullies today. Don’t duck ropes to seek fresh tracks in strictly off limits areas. Significant slabs are forming due to temperature rise and sun exposure and are likely to slide. This information is issued for the safety in and around the resorts. Safety is never guaranteed in the mountains, however most accidents can be avoided if everyone is being cautious. Unfortunately, wind is an issue this morning with the top lifts at Hirafu, Village, Annupuri on hold as well as the gondola at Annupuri. Doh! It is very good to see the Avalanche Report return this morning. Good people doing good things. A good thing. A good day to you all! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base: 0℃, slightly strong wind, 2cm new snow, cloudy. Moiwa 800m: -3.6℃, WSW3.6m/s, W10m/s overnight. Mikaeri 750m: -3℃, WSW4.4m/s, trace new snow, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -5.5℃, WSW6.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4.9℃, SW4.6m/s, N25m/s midnight, trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW14m/s, WSW24m/s at 1am. Kamui Cape W13m/s, 1004hPa, wave 1.7m. There is a low pressure system over Sakhalin, and cold air is flowing in from the west above 750m elevation, resulting in little snowfall with slight cornice development. Wind ripples are appearing. As the isobars narrow, 30 cm or less wind slabs will develop on the leeward side slopes. Avalanche risk is low based on observations and tests. The peak gates are expected to be open. Tracks are still visible and the mountain is rough. Please ski with caution. This information is issued to prevent out of bounds accidents. Over 1,000 people go out of the gates every day in Niseko, but fortunately no serious accidents have occurred. Thank you all for respecting the Niseko rules. There is no safety in the mountains. Stay off the gully bottoms to prevent fatal accidents, this is an avalanche path. Watch out for cracks and falls. You can not see cracks from above. Beware of collapsing snow bridges and falling into streams. Water is cold. Do not ski strictly off limits areas. Beware of sudden changes in weather. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Just over 5cm of fresh again (my own observation), with up to 15cm of fresh reported by Hirafu on the mountain. It is snowing as the lifts get up and running for the day. Should be fun! I don't know why, and can't find any official explanation, but the Hanazono gondola is not opening as planned. The cabins aren't on the cable. (They can quickly put them back on, of course, so may just be a delay). Other than that, all lifts seem to be opening as planned. Yesterday was the Emperor's Birthday and so today is the national holiday to celebrate that. Happy Birthday! I am guessing he had some special toast to celebrate. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have to post early this morning, but hopefully lifts will be opening as planned and we can get to enjoy the whole mountain. As of 8am, we have some sunshine and hints (or more) of blue sky. It feels like the remaining cloud might move on leaving us with fine and clearer skies. Should be a nice morning to be out on the slopes, anyway. And, hopefully, the snow clouds might remain on hand to bring us the chance of some deliveries at times across the next few days. This morning, Hirafu is reporting 5cm and Hanazono is reporting 6cm of fresh snowfall over 24 hours (peak numbers). Niseko Annupuri is reporting 7cm and Village is there with the usual 0cm. (Just ignore that). On that note... ------------------------------------ When I posted my comments yesterday, I should have realised that they might generate a few responses. Some were friendly and interesting, while some were more accusatory in nature. (Hey, I like you, too). There are a few points I would like to make. First up, a curious misunderstanding that some people seem to have (despite apparently reading the reports): These reports are not 'from the slopes' skiing reports. They never have been. OK, on to snowfall numbers. I do not 'over-report' snowfall. I do not 'under-report' snowfall. I simply report the snowfall that I observe. Is my observation taken from near the base of the ski area (Hirafu) rather than up at the top of the mountain? Yes, it is. That is not a secret. My daily snowfall number is clearly marked Observed snowfall at base (24 hrs). Scroll up and take a look. That is exactly the same policy for each of the daily reports here on SnowJapan. They are all coming from areas close to the base of the ski areas. So, suppose I am considered to be 'under-reporting' snowfall from here in Niseko. In that case, the Myoko reporter should similarly be considered to be 'under-reporting' snowfall in Myoko. (I wonder how much snow they get up at 1500m?!) And following the same logic, all the other reporters are similarly 'under-reporting' from their regions, too, right? Does more snow fall higher up on the mountain than at base? Very often, absolutely, yes. That applies here in Niseko. But surely that also applies to other mountains in other regions. It's not just a Niseko thing. (Though I guess there will likely be variations in how much of a difference there is in different locales). Do I mention that reality in my reports? Yes, I do. Every morning, I report how much snowfall is being reported by the ski areas (top/base), when they can be bothered to publish such things (!). I often talk about those snowfall numbers within the text report, too. I also frequently mention the traditional thinking here that there is usually at least 1.5 times more snow up high than in lower areas. I think SnowJapan is quite clear about all of these things. Not much can be done when some people choose not to read stuff and just come to instant assumptions and conclusions based on what they think something should be or what they want. One more thing. Putting all the above to one side momentarily... I do not live on the top of the mountain. Even if SnowJapan suddenly wanted to drastically change how all the reports are done by trying to measure snowfall at the top of the mountain(s), it would be impractical/impossible to do so consistently every day. Where exactly would I take consistent daily measurements for 6 months? And what would I do when there are strong winds, the fresh snow is blown about on the exposed mountain, and the top lifts are closed? I could see it being a right proper old mess. I believe consistency is one of the important things about these reports. Is this a perfect and exact scientific project? No, it isn't. But I/we do our best to provide good and honest information (in a consistent manner) every day for about six months of the year. Please take it (or leave it) for what it is. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have 2cm snowfall to report to you this morning, but it is a beautiful morning. Mostly clear blue skies and sunshine and a little cloud here and there. Lovely. Hopefully all lifts will be moving so we can go get some excite fun up there. I'm heading out myself. ------------------------------------ Recently, a few people have asked me what I thought about the massive snowfall numbers that are sometimes reported in some of the other daily reports on this site. In particular, the Myoko Now report from Niigata Prefecture. I often read the other reports on this site with interest. When I see some of the large numbers reported, my initial reaction is often... wow. I also think how I might not enjoy dealing with that much snow in my daily life. The idea sounds very excite, but the reality might be less so. 大変そう！ As we often say on this site, it is not recommended to directly compare observed snowfall data from the different daily report sections (especially without delving deeper into what is going on). There are just too many differences and circumstances, making direct comparisons problematic. Having said that, let's take a quick look. As of yesterday, the Myoko Now report has posted 30cm or more snowfall in 20 individual reports this season alone. Over 40cm in 11 reports. And over 50cm in 4 reports. 87cm in one report! That is pretty bonkers when you consider the most I have been able to report in one day this season was 24cm. The total snowfall so far was 1383cm, compared to my Niseko number of 684cm. Undeniably, they sometimes get incredible amounts of snowfall there. And they do seem to be enjoying a good season re: snowfall. The Myoko reports come to you from close to the base of one of the main ski areas, Akakura Kanko. Remember, that is the same policy as my reports - and all the others on SnowJapan. The base of Hirafu is at a relatively low 260m elevation, while the base of Myoko Akakura is at 740m. Each summit is at about 1200m and 1500m, respectively (but actual snowfall data at the top is unrecorded). Not wanting to further complicate things, I notice that Yuzawa Town in Niigata Prefecture, also known for sometimes getting crazy amounts of snow, is only at about 350m. The Yuzawa Now report has observed a mind-boggling 148cm of snowfall over the last 3 reports (including this morning). From my observations while reading the Myoko reports, it rarely seems to get as cold down there as it does here in Hokkaido. Rather different profiles. Traditionally, Hokkaido people are rightly very proud of the quality of the snowfall we enjoy here and consider it the best in Japan. (The world?) (The galaxy?) After all, that is why people from around the world consistently come to Niseko. It is also a big reason why I ended up here, as it was the best snow I had experienced so far in Japan during my time here. I have sometimes heard derogatory remarks about snow quality in other regions of Japan to the south, though I don't know how much of a dose of territorial pride there might be in that thinking. I have never been to Myoko, so I am not qualified to offer a valid comparison. But I have heard very good things about the snow quality there from long-time skiing friends from Hokkaido. It is definitely on my list of places that I would like to visit if and when I ever get the chance. (The list is quite long.) I guess some people might not like me discussing something like this, but I don't see any of this as a competition. And it's not as if the data is a secret! Different regions can all be brilliant, and each can excel in various aspects, whether it's the quality of snow, the quantity of snow, both quality and quantity, type of terrain, scenery, atmosphere, facilities, or whatever. Unfortunately, I also have to report that wind is preventing all top lifts from opening at the start of the day. It is quite bright down at base though, with good visibility. Even looks like the sun might be trying to push through some clouds looking at the Niseko Village webcam... ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -6℃, 40cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7.8℃, NNW9.6m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 750m: -9℃, NNW2.9m/s, snow depth increasing, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -9.9℃, NW6.6m/s, strong wind after 2am, cornice development, 40cm new snow. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.4℃, NNE17.6m/s, NE25m/s from midnight till morning, snowdrift development. Avalanche risk is extremely high in Kozan no sawa and Annupuri Osawa over 1000m elevation. A large amount of snow has fallen from the mountain base to the top of the mountain today. Snow is excellent in the tree run but very deep. Getting out of there might be hard if you get stuck. Gate 1, 2,3, and 4 will be closed. Other gates are yet to be decided. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I have 12cm of snowfall to report this morning and as I write this it is coming down very nicely. The snow is set to continue for a few days and continuous resets sound good. Let's hope we get lots! It feels quite cold outside too and wind does not seem to be affecting lifts as they are all opening as scheduled at the start of the day. ------------------------------------ It's time to recap a few things. The below is not copy/paste (I wrote it yesterday), but regular readers will have heard it all before --- so you can skip it without missing anything! However, with new people always finding these reports, asking various questions or sometimes clearly misunderstanding what this report/site is all about, it seems timely to point out some important things again. These reports are 100% independent. They are not sponsored. There is zero advertising. They are free to use. (You have probably noticed that one). They are here to provide an ongoing daily commentary of the season. As observed by me. Any opinions in these reports are entirely my own. You may disagree with some things I say and perhaps even my observed snowfall data. (We may both be 'correct'). Over (many) years, I have gained SnowJapan's trust and have free reign to report how I see fit. I get excited when conditions justify it; less so when they don't. I avoid the overuse of superlatives, and I absolutely avoid marketing-like phrases and throwaway one-liners. I am not here to try to convince you to come to Niseko or to sell you a holiday (or, indeed, anything else). I am also not here to be your concierge or cheerleader for your holiday. By that, I mean I am not here to tell you what you might want to hear, say things are better than they are, or say things to make you feel good. I am here to tell you (*the reader) how things are (*in my eyes), even if it might not always be as gnarly as you would like. I never look at (and so am not influenced by) any other 'snow reports' that might exist, whether in Japanese or English. The only information I refer to daily is various weather forecasts (local, national, international), the Avalanche Report and the official websites of the ski areas. But I am always entirely honest and take that - and the general responsibility of publishing these reports - very seriously. That aligns with the general core concept of SnowJapan.com and what it stands for. Of course, being human, mistakes can be made, but I'm always happy to admit to any and try to fix any I am aware of. Moiwa 800m: -8.5℃, NNW1.6m/s, Strong N wind and snow at midnight, cornice and snowdrift development, 15cm new snow. Mikaeri 750m: -8℃, NNW2.2m/s, snow depth increasing, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -11.0℃, NNW4.4m/s,midnight to 4am N winds>20m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -9.9℃, N5.9m/s, N30m/s at 1am. Coastal data: Benkei Cape N14m/s, Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1005hPa, wave 1.6m. A northerly wind and snow strengthened at midnight, bringing rapid hard and heavy cornice and snowdrift development from crushed crystals in areas across the mountain. The wind weakened after 4am and 15cm of crystalline snowfall fell to dawn. From dawn tests wind-driven slabs will stabilize over time. Expect slabs above 1000m break due to rider stimulation. Similarly, a collapsing cornice may trigger an avalanche. Even if the gates open, keep out of the bottom of the valleys in Kozan-no-sawa(backbowl) and Osawa. Avalanches are natural phenomena, if no one is in its path, no accident will occur. In Niseko, a heavy snow area, cracks start to appear at this time of year in various areas around the mountain. The cracks are difficult to see from above. Be careful not to fall in one. Do not blindly cross cornice slopes in Osawa or Kozan-no-sawa. Traversing can trigger an avalanche. Do not forget there will likely be people below in the valley. Gate opening yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol's decisions. More people mean more accidents. It tests your wisdom to prevent accidents. Overconfidence causes accidents. The snow is not bad. Be prepared before going out of bounds. Be careful of a sudden change in weather. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello from Niseko on this Monday morning. It doesn't feel like a particularly inspiring early morning with just a little (wet) snow to report and an overcast and dull kind of start to the day, along with continued relatively mild temperatures. Visibility is fair lower down but looks limited to poor at higher elevations this morning. Hirafu ski area is reporting 10cm of fresh snow. That seems somewhat 'optimistic' to me. Happily, all lifts appear to be starting the day as normal this morning. Forecasts for the coming week are looking encouraging and we should be getting some consistent snowfall over the coming days. As of today, my observed snowfall for the month is standing at 139cm, with the total for the season so far at 649cm. Another 22cm and we'll have received more snow in February than during January 2025. Another 5cm and we'll have received more snow than last February (2024). With another 11 reports to go this month, I am hoping for a good showing. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -2℃, 2cm wet snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -4.1℃, NNW3.4m/s, No cornice or slab development, 3cm new snow, bad visibility. Mikaeri 750m: -5℃,NW1.0m/s, 3cm new snow, bad visibility, thick fog from 600-700m. The current low pressure zone is dropping intermittent light snowfall and warm air is continuing to flow into the valley. There is a dense fog layer around the 600-700m level. With only a little snow overnight, the mountain is still covered with yesterday's traverse lines. From observations, tests, and a data review, the overall avalanche risk is low. But beware of heavy avalanches and collapsing blocks below lift lines and on steep slopes. Do not duck ropes in search of snow or to ride strictly off limits areas. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, eventually resulting in an accident. In any case, it snowed overnight, so be happy. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A dusting of this morning. Without feeling too guilty, I feel that I can just about justify adding 1cm to this report, though I'll be rounding down in a future report when it's just over 'x' cm. (These things are important... to nerdy me). It is a generally cloudy start to this Sunday morning, though I note that ski areas are reporting foggy conditions at higher elevations. It will probably be another relatively mild day. Unfortunately, the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are all not opening as planned again. But the Avalanche Report is saying that peak gates are expected to open. Perhaps they might open if it clears up? I do not know what the problem might be and can't find any official information, but but the gondola at Hanazono is cabin-free as of 8:40am. Forecasts are saying that we can expect some consistent snowfall across the coming week, along with a return to colder temps. It sounds like a plan! (First mention of 'yellow sand' this weekend. Hmmm, never great to see that subject pop up). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -3℃, light snowfall, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -2.9℃, SSW2.0m/s, trace of new snow. Mikaeri 750m: -7℃, SSW1.5m/s, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -4.5℃, WSW5.5m/s, trace of new snow, good visibility. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -3.9℃, SSW7.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape S6m/s, Kamui Cape calm, 1010hPa, wave 0.6m. There is a Chinese wok-like low pressure system over the Sea of ​​Japan bringing warm air into the Niseko area. The sea and the mountain are calm and it will be a good day for fishing. Cornices and drifts from the strong winds and snow over the last few days are stable. From observation and data the overall risk of avalanches has decreased. Peak gates are expected to be open. However stay out of the valley bottom, if a large cornice collapses it could trigger an avalanche. These cornices are as heavy as a highway bus. Also avoid slopes under cornices. Endlessly traversing under cornices in search of fresh snow is not a good idea. Good sense is required. Yesterday, over 1,000 people followed the Niseko Rules, not ducking ropes and stayed on the course. But several people ducked ropes, entered Haruno Taki and had an accident. They called for a rescue by the Hokkaido Prefectural Police Aviation Unit and the Mountain Rescue Team. We are grateful to the rescue team. Also, at Moiwa 6, five people went through the closed gate and skied into Mikaeri Bowl. Consider there is a reason why the gates are closed. In Niseko you must follow Niseko Rules. The snow was mixed with continental yellow sand yesterday - slow snow. Today is better. There is some good quality snow in some areas. The top lifts being closed is probably making lower lifts busier. All gondolas apart from the Annupuri one are coping. Calmer tomorrow? (I am hoping). Someone wrote in asking about the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ice Chalet Pop-Up Store & Bar at Hanazono. I think they might have been pulling my leg when they said they were planning to visit Niseko just to get one of those posh bags for their bottle of whisky! Well, the structure is still there. As far as I know, it was to be open until the end of January. Kind of interesting in itself. But other than that, I really don't know. Sorry. It would certainly be a shame not to use the building for the rest of the season. I've spent a few seconds carefully considering all the various possibilities, and the obvious thing to do is refit it. Many visitors to Niseko clearly have pressing toast yearnings and requirements, so how about a morning toast bar? It could be called Toast. Or perhaps a charity shop, with all proceeds benefiting people in need. Still on the subject of Hanazono and on a more serious note: The lifts at Hanazono were due to be open until 6th April this season. The ski area has announced their plan to extend the season by one week until 13th April 2025. Hurray! And surely all the more reason to get Toast up and running! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, strong wind but light snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.1℃, NW16m/s, huge cornice development, snowdrifts are dense and reached 150cm in some aspects. Miakeri 750m: NW5.0m/s, snowpack is growing and good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -11.4℃, W9.4m/s, blizzard above 1000m elevation. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.2℃, N8.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW13m/s, Kamui cape NW13m/s, 1014hPa, 2.5m waves. Cornices and snowdrifts are developing massively in leeward slopes above 800m. Strong gale persisting above 1000m at 7am. The wind and the wave height on the shore seems to be slowly calming down, however the newly formed slabs above 1000m elevation are extremely unstable and could crush and let go with its own weight at any time. There might be people thinking of going out of bounds since the sun’s out, but it is highly recommended to avoid riding leeward aspect slopes at least until the wind calms down to 12m/s, and the windload slabs consolidates. Avalanches are very likely to occur regardless of the presence of a weak layer today. Hazard level is extreme in the entire Backbowl (Kozan no sawa) , cornice slopes of Annupuri bowl (O-sawa) and all slopes in Higashi-One. All peak gates including #4 will be closed. Please refrain from hiking up from lower gates. Sneaking in the lift line is out of question. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It is colder again and a mostly overcast kind of morning though the sun is breaking through in places (Hanazono). It's also quite dull and grey in other places around the mountain. Unfortunately, wind continues to be an issue this morning and the days starts with all top lifts on hold, along with the gondola at Annupuri. Wind has been blowing the snow around so it is one of those days when it is difficult to pin down numbers (snowdrifts). Forecasts all seem to indicate a good chance of some clear and sunny skies tomorrow, and perhaps Sunday too. Let's hope that it is calmer too. * My report will probably appear later than usual tomorrow. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6℃, moderate wind, 10cm snowfall, 30cm snowdrifts. Moiwa 800m: -8.7℃, NNW14.4m/s, 25m/s wind after 4am, cornices grew up to 150cm and the newly formed windload slabs (100cm) are not consolidated. Mikaeri 750m: -7℃, WNW5.5m/s, strong snowfall and snowpack is growing. Annupuri 1100m: WNW12m/s (intermittent 25m/s from 2am). Hirafu Hanazono: -10.9℃, ESE5.6m/s (25m/s northerly gusts from 4am). Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW18m/s, Kamui cape WNW15m/s, 1007hPa, 2.5m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steep and stormy weather continues on the Sea and the Mountains. The wind is stronger than yesterday but the visibility is slightly better. Cornices and windrift snow has grown dramatically above 900m elevation. Evaluating the snowfall transition and the morning observations, the avalanche risk is extremely high in leeward slopes around 900m and above. Peak gates will be kept shut. The windload snow accumulated in the valleys has a bit of resistance, but is fun to ride. 35 degree grade slopes should be avoided until the wind drops below 12m/s and the slabs consolidate. Do not stimulate knolls and cornices. The weather up high is completely different from the base. The mountain is constantly challenging you to make the appropriate decision. This information is issued for preventing accidents in the resort accessed backcountry areas. Ropes aren’t meant to be crossed easily.
