Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido

New snowfall at base 8cm
Snowfall at base this season 757cm

Posted on Monday 17th March 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

Good morning from Niseko.

Some more fresh snow again with the ski areas (that report) reporting up to 15-20cm. I'm not seeing that much, so you have to get up there to find it. Sounds like a fun challenge.

Cloudy skies at the moment with some light snow still falling in places. It doesn't look like we are done with the snow just yet.

There is a northerly wind and as of 8:30am top lifts are at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold. And so is the Annupuri Gondola.

I was out enjoying the snow yesterday. The contrast between peak season and now, in terms of the number of people around, is significant. Then again, if you are coming here for the famous powder, which I presume most people are, the peak season is much less of a risk of course. Though nothing is guaranteed, as visitors in the second half of January this year will know. Decisions, decisions. At times like this I realise how fortunate I am to be here all the time and able to pick and choose. Kansha.

The live webcam video for Niseko Hirafu is quite interesting, the way faces are blocked off mosaic style. I'd love to have that as a setting on my TV (and computer) to mosaic out the faces of certain public figures who I find highly objectionable and do not want to look at. Perhaps voices could be changed, too. Into 'hamster voices', or something less irritating. That would be so cool!
