A mix of cloud and some blue sky early this cold morning. In placed the sun is shining through. Oh yes, and some fresh snow too. Another 13cm is my measurement, bringing the total for January up to 72cm already. For the record, Hanazono is showing an impressive 30cm of snowfall at base and 23cm up top. I don't know if those numbers are perhaps mixed up, as there's usually more lower down than higher up and 30cm seems a lot. But that's what they have published anyway. The Avalanche Report reports 20cm from Moiwa base and up to 40cm in some places. Nice. So numbers wise it is a rather mixed bag, but at least they are all in double digits! It is not snowing now, but more is due consistently over coming days. Sounds good to me. Anyway, all scheduled lifts are opening as planned early on and it should be a good morning. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -10℃, light wind, 20cm snowfall, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -13.1℃, NW10.7m/s, snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1100m: -15.9℃, WNW12.8m/s, snowdrifts developments. Village 1000m: -14.5℃, WNW5.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.2℃, N6.1m/s, light snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -11.1℃, NNW5.7m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NNw16m/s, Kamui cape: W12m/s, 1008hPa, 2.2m. Snowfall amounts vary by location, but up to 40cm of new snow has fallen on the western areas above 800m. Snowdrift slabs have reached 150cm on leeward knolls, and stability tests show they fracture easily. Based on data evaluation, the avalanche risk is HIGH in the following areas: Kozan-no-sawa, Osawa cornice face, Higashi-one (East Ridge), Yunosawa, the Haru-no-taki strictly prohibited area, and Mizuno-no-sawa. In these areas, there is a danger of medium-sized soft-slab surface avalanches (up to 50cm thick). These slides can exceed speeds of 80km/h, making escape nearly impossible. Do not stimulate knolls or the upper sections of cornice slopes around the 1000m elevation. Avalanches are often triggered by careless actions, such as traversing steep slopes. There are people in the valleys below; ski and ride with extreme caution. The opening of each gate is yet to be determined—follow the judgment of the ski patrol. This is a ski resort, and all users are obligated to follow its regulations. Annupuri Gate 7 (Ee-sawa) will open today. Do not duck the ropes to enter the gully mid-way down. If one person ducks a rope, many others follow, significantly increasing the risk of an accident. You must only exit to the backcountry through the designated gates. The snow in the trees is excellent. Watch out for tree wells and collisions. It’s a good day out there. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. The sun is out this morning but we should be back to snow by tonight. Even now it seems to be more cloudy than it was a short while ago... The ski area has reported over 20cm of fresh snow in the top areas since yesterday morning, with 5cm of that overnight. But that total number feels surprising (if not welcome). Anyway, there's just several down below. Naski fans around the world are shaken at the apparent lack of the Naski inflatable things on the Hikage base this season, so far at least. There's a bright green inflatable thing in the place (image below), just not the bit that looks like Naski (everyone's favourite bright green skiing vegetable mascot). I don't know what has happened there. Bring back Naski! Calling all Skyline fans! It looks like the Skyline course is going to be opening very soon. The official site says it will open (along with Grand Prix, Jumping and Nagasaka) after checks for safety. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 277cm Good morning from Niseko. I have 6cm of fresh snow to report this morning and it is snowing as I put this report together. It's a bit windy out there too blowing the freshly fallen snow around and limiting visibility. The wind is affecting some lifts at the start of the day. As of 8:30am opening, the Annupuri Gondola and top lift at that ski area is on hold and the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village is operating at reduced speed. Other lifts seem to be opening as planned. Forecasts still showing a good-looking (meaning regular snow) settled winter pattern. Looks like for the moment wind might be the biggest thing to worry about. For the Asahigaoka fans out there, that small ski area near Kutchan Station opened on Friday. A 1-day ticket at that ski area costs 1,500 yen for adults and 800 yen for children. The season ticket is 14,000 yen. Gnarly! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -7℃, moderate winds, 5cm new snow, good visibility. Moiwa 800: -9.9℃, WNW9.0m/s(20m/s @ 4am), snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -12℃, W5.5m/s. Village1000m: -10.8℃, WNW2.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.1℃, N2.6m/s, 10cm new snow. Hanazono 800m: -9.1℃, ENE2.7m/s. Coastal Data: Benkei Cape NW15m/s(20m/s @ 4am), Kamui Cape WSW12m/s, wave 2.2m. Winds peaked at 4am and have dropped to below 15m/s since. Only light snow overnight, but it has reset above 700m. At 1000m there was rapid cornice and snowdrift development, expect fractures at 50cm. On the west wall of Kozen no Sawa(BackBowl) cornices are prone to break and cause small avalanches . Avoid skiing this area first thing in the morning. Avalanches are dangerous, regardless of size. Do not ski under cornices or cut knolls. This could easily trigger an avalanche. Do not wait around in the valley bottom. Avalanches come from above and follow the valleys down. Lower slopes are still heavily covered in bushes, limiting available lines and exits. Watch out for collisions. Yesterday, over 1000 people skied outside the gates, but no accidents were reported. We thank everyone for following the rules. The gates are scheduled to open. Follow patrol instructions. Outside the gates is not part of the ski resort. Niseko allows off-piste skiing but is also concerned about the safety of its visitors. Overconfidence leads to accidents. This sport is dangerous. Always be vigilant. Guides and leaders have a great responsibility. Is your beacon on? The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good Morning Skiers & Boarders, The first Sunday of the New Year, and frankly I expected more locals to be hitting the slopes. Guess they're still at home enjoying the Holiday. Traditionally, the NY holiday period is Jan 1-5 in Japan. Most stores will be back to normal beginning tomorrow, and 100% will be in action starting Tuesday. Ah yes, the snow report. First, a few reminders: Furano Now offers daily, direct on-the-ground reporting. We measure the snowfall every day from a Top Secret location near the base of the Kitanomine Gondola, and report weather conditions as we experience them. We don't report the snowfall at the summit. This is consistent for all the SnowJapan reports. This method usually does not reflect the larger amounts of snow that usually fall at higher elevations, but it is consistent, so viewers can draw valid conclusions. We don't measure in town, we don't measure at the summit, we don't measure the gnarly mid-mountain leeward snow drift. Just at the base. Recently, due to unforeseen circumstances, your faithful Furano reporter was forced to report the snowfall from a secondary location for the last few days, which resulted in a slight under-reporting of snowfall from the normal location. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Hello from Madarao. More snow since yesterday with some periods of heavy snow early morning. I'm measuring 25cm which is actually more than what the ski area is reporting this morning (20cm). More snow is forecast, though at the time of this report it is fairly bright and even some hints of sun through the clouds. That may well be temporary. We might get some clearer skies tomorrow for those who like such conditions to enjoy fresh snow.
