Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 357cm Posted on Thursday 8th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Good snow is falling, and it looks to really pick up through the day. Powder snow on the slopes! It’s starting to feel more, well, Myoko. I have to be on the slopes early again today; often I have to get out early for plowing and snow checking and such, but then I can get back to my computer to pick up the resort reports and provide you, dear reader, with the freshest news possible (usually still hot). I did discover that the resorts usually update between 7:30 and 8am (which made me a little late tomorrow—but so were the people I went to meet). Going to send this early today, noting that we have only a little new snow so far, that the conditions are largely the same, except that it is not as cold (normal when it snows). Tomorrow I will have time to do a proper poke in the snow and let you know the real depth, and the updates from the resorts. I’ll note any that do report early today in the individual report. • Niseko Now: Thursday 8th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this season 331cm A very good morning to you from Niseko. Here's the 24 hour snowfall news from the ski areas this morning, in order of much snowfullness: Niseko Hirafu: 30cm Niseko Hanazono: 25cm Niseko Annupuri: 15cm Niseko Village: 0cm My own measurement is 23cm, and it is still snowing - with consistent snowfall lined up still on the forecasts for the week ahead. I have been able to report snowfall in every report so far this month, bringing the total for January 2026 up to 113cm. Good times. (Well, in terms of our Niseko January 2026 snowfall patterns). Limited visibility at the moment. Take care out there. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -5℃, light wind, heavy snowfall from midnight, 20cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -8.3℃, NNW2.1m/s, strong southerly wind during the day yesterday created large snowdrifts development, heavy snowfall from midnight. Annupuri 1100m: -10.6℃, W0.8m/s. Village 1000m: -9.4℃, NNE2.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -9.7℃, N3.6m/s. Hanazono 800m: -7.8℃, NNE2.2m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: N10m/s, Kamui cape: N9m/s, 1005hPa, 2.3m waves. Snowdrifts created by the southerly wind as the low-pressure system passes through have stabilised over time. Snowfall intensified from midnight with light wind, and snowdrift development is small. New snowfall reached a maximum of 40cm, with minimal wind impact, during the early morning. Based on our observations and data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open; please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Heavy snowfall since midnight can trigger loose-snow avalanches. Be cautious as their speeds remain high even in the trees. There’ve been quite a few accidents caused by losing control on groomers. Ski within your ability. The mountains are crowded. Do not trigger avalanches by traversing cornice slopes. Do not stay in valley bottoms. Avalanches come from above. Snow has finally begun to bury the bamboo grass. Today’s powder is good. Watch out for riding into trees. There is no safety in this sport. Did you bring your beacon? Be alert for sudden weather changes. Check the weather map. Isobars don’t lie. Have a good day. ------------------------------------ Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 25cm Base: 25cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 195cm (+15cm change since yesterday) Base: 125cm (+10cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 4 of 4 lifts Gondola until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 30cm Base: 30cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 255cm (+15cm change since yesterday) Base: 85cm (+5cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 8 of 9 lifts (not Ace 4) Ace Gondola, Ace Family quad, King Gondola and King Holiday pair until 7:00pm Planned open courses: Courses not open are Large, Konayuki and Miharashi ------------------ Niseko Village Ski Resort Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 173cm (+8cm change since yesterday) Base: 92cm (+12cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 7 of 8 lifts (not Country Road) Upper Village Gondola, Village Express and Banzai Chair until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 15cm Base: 15cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 160cm (no change since yesterday) Base: 120cm (+20cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 6 of 6 lifts Jumbo Number 1 quad until 7:30pm ------------------ Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort Planned lift operations: 3 of 3 lifts Niseko Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Thursday 8th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 331cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 38 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 24cm (on 12th December and 2nd January) November 2025 snowfall 29cm reported on 7 days December 2025 snowfall 189cm reported on 23 days January 2026 snowfall 113cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good afternoon Skiers and Boarders, Airport run this morning. Apologies for the delay. Mother Nature came thru last night, and the total amount was almost exactly what the forecast predicted. That never happens, so it was kind of fun. It's light. It's fwuffy. It's Furano snow. Must be experienced to be believed. Scary Evil Empire Microsoft forecast says "Temps to plummet." Ooooo, scary! Looking at various forecasts, it looks like the temps will "drop", but not "plummet." I mean, they're only going to "plummet" down to -10 or -11 C from a current temp of -4 C. That's not really plummeting. Anyway, no real snow forecast for tomorrow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another early morning on the hill today, so I hope we have some fresh news in by the time I have to take off. I have to say that the resorts on the whole have been pretty good about getting news up by 8 or so; I still think they’d help themselves by posting conditions earlier in the morning before people make the day’s decision. Maybe people aren’t so worried about the immediate conditions anyway. It’s been surprisingly uncrowded on the slopes, even at the end of the New Year holidays. Maybe the domestic crowd held back because of low snow levels. I guess we’ll see on the coming three-day weekend, which usually means full parking lots and more people out on the slopes. Another light dusting of snow overnight, and more snow is coming. I wonder when we will get continuous, multi-day snowfalls (which would really help get the backcountry ready)? I really start to feel like the old guy on the hill when I ramble on about, “that January when we only had one day of sun.” I’m pretty sure it actually happened. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 7th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 308cm Good morning from Niseko. Yesterday we had spells of bright sunny skies but it was snowing again from around lunchtime and quite heavily at times. The snow eased off as it was getting dark with clearer skies. This morning I have another 10cm to add to my reports. There is a mix of cloud and blue sky and sun this morning. Very nice. Today might be relatively mild, but tomorrow is set to be colder once again and there's more snow due. I like the consistency of 2026 so far! I have been keeping my beady eye (as I only have one) on the 'daily new snowfall' data posted by Niseko Village ski area on the official Niseko United website. There have been one or two days when it shows signs of life, but almost every day it's just 0cm - even on the days when there is clearly new snowfall to report across the mountain. Like today. I almost wish I had kept an ongoing record of it. Are they just not interested? Can't be bothered? Not enough staff? I realise most people aren't anywhere near as nerdy as I am on these things, but it still seems really lazy. And surely new snowfall each morning is actually a number of importance to a lot of skiers and snowboarders? (Can of worms arguing about specific numbers aside!) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -10℃, light wind, 15cm snowfall, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.6℃, SSW1.6m/s, 20cm snowfall, no snowdrifts. Annupuri 1100m: -12.8℃, WSW4.0m/s. Village: -11.5℃, W4.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.1℃, N8.0m/s, 10cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -9.2℃, SSW5.5m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: SSW5m/s, Kamui cape: SSW9m/s, 1014hPa, 1.0m waves. A weak pressure gradient ahead of the low-pressure system has brought calm conditions to both the sea and the mountains. No new wind slabs have developed, and based on our observations and data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open; please follow the instructions of the ski patrol. The Niseko Rules were established to govern out-of-bounds skiing and prevent accidents. However, the National Forestry Agency does not formally approve this Rule under fundamental laws; they just tacitly tolerate it. In reality, the inherent risks of the winter mountains are the same whether you are just outside the ski resort boundary or deep in the backcountry. The Niseko Avalanche Information is issued to provide objective data to help prevent accidents both in the resort surroundings and the wider mountain range. Ultimately, the final judgment rests with the individual. This information is intended to assist not only resort users but all mountain enthusiasts in making their own risk assessments in the field. Most avalanche accidents occur when heavy slabs, created by heavy snowfall and wind-driven snow, collapse under their own weight along intertwined lines of weakness within the slabs—regardless of the presence of a prominent weak layer. The snow today isn’t deep, but it is excellent. Watch out for tree collisions. They’re stronger than you. Do you have your beacon and shovel? Do you have your probe? Stay alert for sudden weather changes. Have a great day. ------------------------------------ Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 10cm Base: 10cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 180cm Base: 115cm Planned lift operations: 4 of 4 lifts Gondola until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 15cm Base: 15cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 240cm (+5cm change since yesterday) Base: 80cm (-5cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 8 of 9 lifts (not Ace 4) Ace Gondola, Ace Family quad, King Gondola and King Holiday pair until 7:00pm Planned open courses: Courses not open are Large, Konayuki and Miharashi ------------------ Niseko Village Ski Resort Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 165cm (no change since yesterday) Base: 80cm (no change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 7 of 8 lifts (not Country Road) Upper Village Gondola, Village Express and Banzai Chair until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 10cm Base: 10cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 160cm (no change since yesterday) Base: 100cm (no change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: 6 of 6 lifts Jumbo Number 1 quad until 7:30pm ------------------ Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort Planned lift operations: 3 of 3 lifts Niseko Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Wednesday 7th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 308cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 37 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 24cm (on 12th December and 2nd January) November 2025 snowfall 29cm reported on 7 days December 2025 snowfall 189cm reported on 23 days January 2026 snowfall 90cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko.
