Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 2cm
Snowfall at base this season 351cm

Another early morning on the hill today, so I hope we have some fresh news in by the time I have to take off. I have to say that the resorts on the whole have been pretty good about getting news up by 8 or so; I still think they’d help themselves by posting conditions earlier in the morning before people make the day’s decision. Maybe people aren’t so worried about the immediate conditions anyway.

It’s been surprisingly uncrowded on the slopes, even at the end of the New Year holidays. Maybe the domestic crowd held back because of low snow levels. I guess we’ll see on the coming three-day weekend, which usually means full parking lots and more people out on the slopes.

Another light dusting of snow overnight, and more snow is coming. I wonder when we will get continuous, multi-day snowfalls (which would really help get the backcountry ready)?

I really start to feel like the old guy on the hill when I ramble on about, “that January when we only had one day of sun.” I’m pretty sure it actually happened. Pretty cold, too, which is good for the snow condition.
