Yesterday we had spells of bright sunny skies but it was snowing again from around lunchtime and quite heavily at times. The snow eased off as it was getting dark with clearer skies. This morning I have another 10cm to add to my reports. There is a mix of cloud and blue sky and sun this morning. Very nice. Today might be relatively mild, but tomorrow is set to be colder once again and there's more snow due. I like the consistency of 2026 so far! I have been keeping my beady eye (as I only have one) on the 'daily new snowfall' data posted by Niseko Village ski area on the official Niseko United website. There have been one or two days when it shows signs of life, but almost every day it's just 0cm - even on the days when there is clearly new snowfall to report across the mountain. Like today. I almost wish I had kept an ongoing record of it. Are they just not interested? Can't be bothered? Not enough staff? I realise most people aren't anywhere near as nerdy as I am on these things, but it still seems really lazy. And surely new snowfall each morning is actually a number of importance to a lot of skiers and snowboarders? (Can of worms arguing about specific numbers aside!) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -10℃, light wind, 15cm snowfall, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.6℃, SSW1.6m/s, 20cm snowfall, no snowdrifts. Annupuri 1100m: -12.8℃, WSW4.0m/s. Village: -11.5℃, W4.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.1℃, N8.0m/s, 10cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -9.2℃, SSW5.5m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: SSW5m/s, Kamui cape: SSW9m/s, 1014hPa, 1.0m waves. A weak pressure gradient ahead of the low-pressure system has brought calm conditions to both the sea and the mountains. No new wind slabs have developed, and based on our observations and data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open; please follow the instructions of the ski patrol. The Niseko Rules were established to govern out-of-bounds skiing and prevent accidents. However, the National Forestry Agency does not formally approve this Rule under fundamental laws; they just tacitly tolerate it. In reality, the inherent risks of the winter mountains are the same whether you are just outside the ski resort boundary or deep in the backcountry. The Niseko Avalanche Information is issued to provide objective data to help prevent accidents both in the resort surroundings and the wider mountain range. Ultimately, the final judgment rests with the individual. This information is intended to assist not only resort users but all mountain enthusiasts in making their own risk assessments in the field. Most avalanche accidents occur when heavy slabs, created by heavy snowfall and wind-driven snow, collapse under their own weight along intertwined lines of weakness within the slabs—regardless of the presence of a prominent weak layer. The snow today isn’t deep, but it is excellent. Watch out for tree collisions. They’re stronger than you. Do you have your beacon and shovel? Do you have your probe? There should be a nice layer out there this morning across all of the ski areas. There's some more due perhaps this morning, but it has eased off at this particular moment - and it looks like it might be quite bright over on the Tangram side. So maybe we're done for now. This morning we have some blue sky above a thick bank of cloud around the mountains, but visibility looks at least ok to pretty good at higher elevations at 8am. Down at base the snowfall has eased off and the sun is shining through in places. However, I can see things are a bit blowy (and it still snowing?) up at the Happo-one. Higher lifts may very well be affected this morning. I have to be too early this morning for numbers reported from Happo-one, but Goryu is reporting up to 25cm of fresh snow and Hakuba 47 saying 15cm on upper areas ('since last night'). Tsugaike is reporting 20cm 'with more in places'. The JMA reading for Hakuba village has 18cm over the last 24 hours with 2cm of that overnight, and my own measurement since last report is the same. But Hakuba Cortina ski area wins the snowfall prize for this morning - they are teasing us with news of 60cm over 24 hours (30cm overnight) in upper areas. It should be a very good morning. The next big snow looks due going into Thursday. Forecasts are looking good for consistent incoming, too, over the coming week. And I don't have any other thoughts this morning. Which, in one way, is a good thing! (There's not data published from Hanazono this morning in time for this report). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -10℃, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -13.2℃, NW3.7m/s, 15cm snowfall, small snowdrift development, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -15.4℃, WNW5.4m/s, 15cm snowfall, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Village 1000m: -14.2℃, WNW2.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.6℃, N1.5m/s, 5cm snowfall, calm. Hanazono 800m: -12.1℃, N1.2m/s, light snowfall. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW9m/s, Kamui cape: N7m/s, 1010hPa, 1.1m. Both sea and mountains are calm, with a strong cold air inflow. 10-15cm Light crystal snowfall. Heavy snowdrifts accumulated until yesterday have consolidated and stabilized. Based on observations and data evaluation, the overall avalanche risk is low. The south-facing, strictly off-limits area of Haru-no-taki has developed a thin crust due to solar radiation. There is a risk that triggering could cause the entire slab to fracture. Dangerous. Do not duck ropes and sneak into strictly off-limits areas behind the back of the ski patrols. Yesterday, a rider crashed into a tree while riding from the summit. Hirafu Patrol rescued them, but the transport was difficult due to insufficient snow. We are grateful for the ski patrol’s effort. Beware of collisions. Do not climb back up immediately after exiting the Moiwa gate 6. Guiding beginners here invites accidents in Anbetsu. This is a ski area; one person’s selfish action can lead to an accident. Avalanche danger is ever-present in Kozan-no-sawa, Oosawa cornice slopes, and Higashi-One. Many people are in the valley. Do not trigger an avalanche. Be considerate of others. Is your beacon on? The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and there's a lot of people lining up for the first gondola of the day. For good reason, too, with the ski area reporting up to 35cm of snowfall since 3pm yesterday. That is around when it started (down at base anyway). The snow has stopped and there is even a bit of blue sky appearing away from the mountain. Clouds still cover the top areas, though, and it may well still be snowing up there. Visibility looks limited at the start of the day. Some sun is forecast during tomorrow with more fresh snow due to be falling from the skies on Thursday, with more lined up for late weekend. The numbers are still relatively low, but it feels like we're into a good pattern now.
