Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 403cm Good morning from Niseko. The rain and lack of snow to report yesterday was, happily, just a blip! In hindsight, that is acceptable. This morning I have an impressive 36cm of fresh snowfall to report. Brilliant. I note my total for January 2026 is now up to a healthy looking 185cm. Hirafu is reporting a cool 50cm of fresh snowfall this morning (base and top), though after their 15cm declaration yesterday morning I'm looking at that base number with a handful of salt. I can certainly believe the top measurement. Annupuri is reporting 30-40cm. (And Village is reporting 0cm). Wherever you are, a lot of snow and with more on the way. The images today (below) were all taken just before 8:30am. As you can see, it looks fairly clear over at Hanazono at the moment, but there's some moderate snowfall and limited visibility at Village and Annupuri. Conditions (meaning pesky wind) mean that a lot of lifts are on hold leaving just generally lower ones opening as planned. That is, apart from Hanazono, where all 4 lifts appear to be gambatte-ing. Still, that may be the price we must pay for our ongoing snow delivery. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, 40cm snowfall, hardcore snow clearing. Moiwa 800m: -10.6℃, NW9.2m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developments. Annupuri 1100m: -12.8℃, WNW6.5m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -11.6℃, W2.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.3℃, ESE5.4m/s. Hanazono 800m: -4.8℃, NNE3.4m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape NW18m/s, Kamui cape NW13m/s, 1001hPa, 3.9m waves. The wind peaked between 2:00am and 3:00am at NW 22m/s with wave heights rising around 4m. Morning observations show that cornices and snowdrifts have grown significantly and are still developing. Above 800m, the avalanche risk is extremely high. There is a potential for slab avalanches with a fracture line depth of 50–80cm on cornice slopes, valley sidewalls, and knolls. The speed of wind-slab growth has outpaced any compaction, making it prone to deep-layer fracturing from even the slightest trigger. The sliding surface would be yesterday’s warm layer, but it’s not that the avalanche occurs because that layer is freezing. The cause for the slide is the internal collapse (shear failure within the new snowpack) of the slab, which has rapidly and drastically gained weight. Steep slopes below tree-line are also dangerous. If the trail-breaking exceeds waist-deep, you should be on high alert for avalanches. Even if the lifts are running, it is better not to leave the groomed runs today. The snow is “madly deep”. Watch out for falls and collisions. Do you have your beacon? Today, it is not an ornament. Have a good day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The weather is weird today, which was kind of expected given the unusual weather pattern driving what could be a big snowstorm today and tomorrow. We’re seeing bits of blue sky out there, but also wispy clouds rising up from the valleys, low gray clouds in places you never see them, and the higher clouds moving pretty rapidly from the south, even while it’s calm here at the base area. The usual north winds from Siberia are out there (if the winds are coming straight from Vladivostok to Myoko, it’s almost certain we’ll have snow), but are getting intercepted by even stronger winds sweeping along the coast. The last time there was a similar coastal wind from the southwest Joetsu City to our north was buried, while Myoko got very little snow. The winds are going to change, though, so maybe later today and tomorrow will be when the big snow comes in. Which we could use! I talked with several people who decided to try the backcountry, and the brush still is really heavy. Like, enjoy not turning much in places. It’s getting there, but a few consecutive days of deep stuff would really help! Also just to cover over the ice that was forming in places on the ski runs yesterday after a mild day with sun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Lovely day yesterday, though it did get rather mild in the afternoon (nearly getting as warm as 10C). This morning there is several cm of snow around base areas in places and we have more due through the day along with strong winds. Early on ski areas seem to be opening pretty much as normal but some higher lifts might be affected. Happo-one reporting the most new snowfall so far with 15cm at Kurobishi and 12cm at Usagidaira. Anyway, it might get blown around a lot but I should have some good snowfall numbers to report tomorrow morning. I found the auto-translate on Tsugaike facebook-thingy rather amusing again this morning: "Okinawa Pow looks like fun!" Okinawa?! But what about Hakuba?! For those interested in how something like that might happen, the original Japanese that is being translated to Okinawa is 栂パウ. The first kanji is the first kanji of Tsugaike. The two katakana say pa-u ('pow'). Interesting how that ended up as Okinawa. Again, be extremely wary of these auto-translate things. Today is that day. And unfortunately, we have endured rain overnight. Never welcome during the winter season. Who do I complain to?! The Niseko United official site is showing some... interesting... fresh snowfall numbers this morning. Hirafu is claiming 15cm at base. Really? Really?? Oh, and the same amount at top; Hanazono is reporting 2cm at base and 10cm up top. For down at base, though, I tend to agree with Niseko Village who are going with their customary 0cm. ;) There's no layer of fresh snow showing on the top of the Niseko Village gondola roof. I guess that there may perhaps be a modest layer of snow up in higher elevations. At the start of the day wind is affecting the top lifts and also the gondolas at Annupuri, Village and Hirafu (Ace). Wind will likely remain pesky (at least sometimes) over the next several days but at least we do expect more snowfall as it gets colder again. Cloudy as I have been putting the report together but it looks like there's some light snow falling over at Hanazono. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Guten Morgen, Skifahrer und Snowboarder! For our German visitors. Well, well, well. We've got ourselves a bit of a mess today. We got 12 cm of new snow since yesterday. This is good, but as the Blue Bloods say when screening their children's love interests, it's "not the right sort." Sloppy, sloppy. Squishy, squishy. More snow is on the way in the coming days. Also good. BUT, this particular storm system has a lot of wind. Mucho, mucho wind! 20 kph at the base, and allegedly 57 kph on top, far beyond what our delicate Gondola can handle. The Ropeway is more sheltered and still operating today, however, Lift E at the top of the Furano Zone is also closed today due to wind. And this is because, it's going to get even windier after lunch. If the forecast is to be believed, it's going to DOUBLE!!!! Hang on to your helmets! I'd think about packing it in after lunch today. Big news! The Kitanomine escalator opened today! Yipee! Beginners celebrate, along with everyone else who can now take the magic carpet to the Quad Lift F instead of trudging uphill for 50 meters. Oh, the agony! Naturally, the operation schedule doesn't match the escalator on the other side. Naturally. This is Japan. Logic doesn't necessarily need to apply. Accept it and move on. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Snow through the day yesterday again and another fab 40cm and just over 50cm reported by the ski area. And this morning we have blue sky with cloud and expect some fine weather. Should be some excellent conditions this morning, though feeling relatively mild even early on. All lifts are go. Wind and possibly blizzard like conditions tomorrow (and colder too). Looks like some interesting weather is lined up for the coming days.
