  • Yuzawa Now: Friday 16th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 879cm Posted on Friday 16th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's another cloudy morning here. Yesterday afternoon it did start... snowing. Very wet snow, sleety snow, but not much later after it started there was a thin layer of white on the ground once again. It continued overnight by the looks and there's just over 5cm on the top of my car this morning. It's far from being the driest powder, for sure, but better than rain! I would expect better conditions the higher you go this morning. Maiko reports just a bit of snow, Naeba reports 5-10cm and Kagura is reporting 10-15cm this morning. So I'd say dusting-5cm at lower areas and up to 15cm higher up. So it's cloudy and grey to start the day off, but a few small signs to the north that in places it might just clear a bit. False alarms perhaps, and indeed the forecast is for cloudy conditions for today and temperatures to remain around 1C or 2C. Naeba seem to be saying there's moderate wind at summit over there, but not affecting lifts. All resorts appear to be opening as normal. Snowfall is expected again before the day ends and overnight into tomorrow. It should be getting colder as well tomorrow and with a potentially decent amount to fall conditions should be good tomorrow morning. --- Official snow depths (some not updated today due to early report): GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 245cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen: 230cm Maiko Snow Resort: 315cm (upper) 230cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 303cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm (Kogen) 240cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 215cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Friday 16th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 879cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 28 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 320cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 17th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 884cm Posted on Saturday 17th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We enjoyed a bit of sunshine and blue skies in the afternoon yesterday once the clouds cleared up a bit, though there was still a lot of cloud around. It started snowing as far as I can tell somewhere around 4am - when the sprinklers kicked into action - and now there's 5cm of snow on the top of my car, and it's snowing now with a moderate northerly wind blowing it down fast. Unfortunately the wind situation is messing with the start of the weekend at Kagura with the Tashiro area closed and it only being open from the Mitsumata Ropeway up to the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift. They are hoping to maybe get the quad going depending on conditions, but have made the closed-for-the-day decision for the other areas I mentioned. A look round it looks like other resorts are open as normal. So yes, 5cm that I can see; Kagura reporting 10cm; Naeba reporting 5-10cm; Maiko Snow Resort reporting 10cm - so you can get an idea. Snow is expected through the day today and probably into tomorrow as well, with the snow perhaps easing off during the day tomorrow. If you're doing the Naeba all night thing tonight, prepare to be snowed upon! Hopefully there'll be a whole big chunk more to report tomorrow. Must be difficult being a ski resort - you want regular fresh snow, but please do the business overnight and not on a peak season weekend! --- Official snow depths (some not updated today due to early report): GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 240cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen: 290cm Maiko Snow Resort: 315cm (upper) 230cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 288cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm (Kogen) 240cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 215cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Saturday 17th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 884cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 29 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 325cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 18th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 914cm Posted on Sunday 18th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snowfall for the day yesterday along with some real blowy northerly winds as well, quite strong at times. I actually had a day in Nagaoka city yesterday so I don't know for sure but would imagine that the wind might have messed around with some lifts other than just those at Kagura. It's not as windy this morning but snow is still falling. How much snow? Well, yesterday evening there had been about 20cm during the daytime and this morning there's another 10-15cm so I'm calling 30-35cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. Kagura are reporting 40-50cm fresh snow this morning; Naeba report 20-50cm; Maiko Snow Resort report 30cm. Unfortunately, wind is still affecting the Kagura resort with only from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Gondola area open at the beginning of the day - they leave the chance of more of the areas opening if the winds ease off. There might be a chance of that though as come this afternoon the snow is forecast to ease leaving us with just cloudy conditions (perhaps even a bit of sun, he says hopefully), and calmer conditions. So there's another decent amount of fresh snow on the slopes of all the resorts to play in today. Should be a good one, especially if it clears up sooner than later. The forecast for tomorrow is cloud and snow showers at times. --- Official snow depths (some not updated today due to early report): GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 350cm Iwappara: 270cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 320cm Kandatsu Kogen: 310cm Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm (upper) 270cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 288cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Sunday 18th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 914cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 30 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 355cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 19th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 924cm Posted on Monday 19th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snowfall continued into the afternoon yesterday, leaving us with clearer skies (at last) late afternoon. And a very icy evening. 10cm of snowfall during the day yesterday and none overnight. An odd mix of cloud this morning. There's actually a slight bit of blue sky over Minamiuonuma and it was a bit brighter when I got up but there's more grey clouds over us now with snow due anytime this morning which should continue into tomorrow morning. Sunshine on Wednesday maybe? Would make for a change! We only noticed this yesterday but it's very interesting all the same. So far this season on our Yuzawa Now reports here we have observed 919cm of snowfall up until today. Compare that to last season when at the very end of the season we had observed 833cm. So we are already well over the total amount of snow that fell last season and it's only mid January. It's not an exact science of course, but interesting all the same. --- Official snow depths (some not updated today due to early report): GALA Yuzawa: 390cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 340cm Iwappara: 265cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 320cm Kandatsu Kogen: 310cm Maiko Snow Resort: 330cm (upper) 270cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 330cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 19th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 924cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 31 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 365cm reported on 15 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 20th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 949cm Posted on Tuesday 20th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Guess what, it's still snowing. Yes, snow continues to fall from the skies and continues to build up. Since yesterday the place where I measure (and the top of the car) has seen an extra 25cm of snowfall. This morning Kagura report 40cm; 20-40cm reported from Naeba; but get this - Maiko Snow Resort are saying 70cm! I don't know if that's a typo or not, it does seem a lot. But there you go. 25cm itself isn't too bad is it! So for the purpose of the report I'm going to go with what I observed, and that's the 25cm. Keen to get over to Maiko though and check that out! Anyway, it's still snowing but due to ease up around lunchtime. Tomorrow, sun is forecast! Rare stuff this season. Looks like it should warm up a bit as well. By Thursday/Friday we are expected to be back to snow, with unfortunately the chance of some rain beforehand - at town level anyway. I'm personally hoping this snow will clear early today and we might get some sun come up this afternoon. --- Unfortunately some fairly strong winds at Kagura are preventing them from fully opening again this morning... just Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 Romance at the beginning of the day. With weather conditions expected to improve, we might see more open. Top lifts at Naeba also affected. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 954cm Posted on Wednesday 21st January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Ah, clear skies! Something we haven't seen much of this season but early morning here and there are clear skies over Yuzawa. Just a few clouds to the north but the early morning sun is starting to add some colour. It's going to be a beautiful morning. No new snowfall overnight, though it did continue snowing until late afternoon yesterday and I would say there was 5-10cm to add to the total. Cold start to the day, and icy outside. Sunshine should warm things up a bit during the day with a high of around +4 forecast. The clear skies aren't going to last that long though. Upcoming is the chance of rain tomorrow (lower levels anyway), before ending up snowing once again. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 25th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 959cm Posted on Sunday 25th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I made a small update to the report yesterday because very soon after it went up the skies started clearing and the sun was out. That clear-up continued and it ended up being a rare clear day with a brilliant sun shining down and blue skies. Rare this season anyway, as we have got very few of such days in the first half of the season. It's going to be interesting to see how the rest of the season turns out. Anyway, it was a really beautiful day yesterday. Snow conditions were better in higher areas and not perfect on lower areas, but the weather probably made up for that... for many people anyway! Overnight we got a bit of snowfall and there's 2cm or so of rather wet snow on the top of my car outside. Looks like the resorts that report such things early on are all reporting just a thin layer of new snow. Lots of cloud around and webcams around town show limited visibility on the mountains, but there's some sun on the forecast for later this morning - perhaps we will see a beautiful clear up like yesterday? We'll just have to wait and see. It is 0C as we approach 8am but a high temperature of +5C expected this afternoon - which is actually warmer than yesterday. Slightly warmer conditions expected tomorrow too... so we're going through a bit of a mild patch at the moment. Come Tuesday we're forecast a return to snow, which may be preceded by some more rainfall in town. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 410cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 330cm Iwappara: 245cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 320cm Kandatsu Kogen: 330cm Maiko Snow Resort: 330cm (upper) 230cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 314cm Yuzawa Kogen: 310cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Sunday 25th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 959cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 35 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 400cm reported on 19 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. This is better! After a rather wet and rainy day yesterday - in town at least - we are back to snow this morning. There's 10cm of fresh snow on the top of my car; Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10-15cm, Kagura are reporting 20cm and no number yet from Naeba. It's back to be being colder as well, certainly much colder than it has been the last few days with the temperature currently -2 degrees and expected to stay about that for the day. It's good to see the snow on the ground again. Feels like it has been a while, and indeed it has really - a look back shows that it has been a week or so since the last decent snowfall. Anyway it is coming down still now and forecast to be snowing for the day. The forecast tells us to expect this snowfall to ease off by tomorrow morning some time but further snow back with us on Friday and then be snowing again through into early next week.... looks like we might be on for quite a lot of snow over the weekend. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 320cm Kandatsu Kogen: 295cm Maiko Snow Resort: 310cm (upper) 220cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 285cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 210cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Wednesday 28th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 969cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 36 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 410cm reported on 20 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So it was snowing for most of the time yesterday, and since my report yesterday there's been 5-10cm of snow fall. Kagura report 10cm this morning and Maiko saying 5-10cm, so you can get the idea. Not as much as we might expect for after a day of snowfall, but still... just very light snow lazily falling now and it's forecast to ease off - might even get some sunshine later on today; if not, just cloudy. It is currently -2 degrees in town and only the faint outline of the mountains can be seen just now. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 979cm Posted on Saturday 31st January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa where it's snowing lightly early on and hovering around 0 degrees. Snow did arrive yesterday later in the morning, very lightly at first and then heavier at times during the afternoon though it didn't end up with many cm on the ground by the end of the day. It's interesting how sometimes it builds up at an alarmingly fast rate and other times it just doesn't seem to want to! Anyway this morning outside there's less than 5cm of snow on my car so just a thin layer at the moment. Looking around the resorts, both Maiko Snow Resort and Naeba are reporting 5-10cm on their slopes while Kagura are coming in with 20cm of fresh. There's a bit of wind blowing around and that is unfortunately affecting the Tashiro part of Kagura which is going to be closed for the day. The Mitsumata Station of Kagura will be open with lifts up to the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift planned to be moving. If anything the wind is forecast to get stronger as the day goes on, so I doubt there will be any improvements to that particular situation. So yes, snow forecast for the day and tomorrow as well. There might not be a huge amount so far, but I think tomorrow morning there will be quite a lot more to report. --- Hold on a moment... just looking out of the window here and I can actually just now see a bit of blue sky appear from behind the clouds and the sun is even making an appearance. That will very probably just be a temporary thing as clearing up is definitely not on any of the forecasts. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 1st February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 999cm Posted on Sunday 1st February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. That bit of blue sky and sun yesterday morning while I was writing the report quickly disappeared and we were left with a day of snow falling and moderate to sometimes quite strong winds. The Niigata forecast said we could expect up to 50cm of fresh snowfall overnight and indeed that is what Kagura is reporting (40-50cm) this morning but less so down here in town. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20-30cm of snow, while there's 20cm of fresh outside my place here since my report yesterday. So it looks like one of those days when higher up Kagura and the Naeba area gets a fair bit more than we did in town - and I would say there have been less of those this season than usual. Still, 20-30cm of fresh sounds good to me so snow conditions should be good this morning everywhere. Not the friendliest of conditions this morning though... it's still snowing now and a look round the webcams shows pretty much white-out conditions in most places at the beginning of the day. It's not looking like it is going to give up anytime soon with the snow clouds due to still be over the region through tomorrow. Cold at around -3C as of 8am and a moderate wind likely during the day. Unfortunately the wind is preventing the Tashiro area of Kagura to open again this morning and it's limited at Kagura via Mitsumata as well. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 410cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 360cm Iwappara: 265cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 340cm Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm (upper) 270cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 305cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 225cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Sunday 1st February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 999cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 39 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 20cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 2nd February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 1034cm Posted on Monday 2nd February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another 20cm or so of snowfall during the day yesterday, and 15cm to move again this morning - so around 35cm fresh snow since my report yesterday once again. That takes us to over 10m of snowfall observed here at town level since the beginning of the season. Impressive! (Kagura only reporting 20cm this morning but I suspect that's just not including snow that fell yesterday. I can't make that number up though... so 20cm it is. Other confirmed number this morning is 20-30cm of fresh at Maiko). Was rather windy as well for parts of yesterday, and it looks like wind is still with us this morning with the Tashiro area of Kagura once again closed this morning and only part of the main Kagura area open. Once that area finally gets opened up again, there's going to be some amazing untouched conditions up there to enjoy. Tomorrow perhaps? It's good to see that Gala Yuzawa is able to keep open through stronger wind conditions these days as well. OK so back down here and it's moderate snowfall still with a moderate wind and limited visibility. Expecting the snowfall to get less later on in the day with cloud and possible snow showers at times tomorrow. Not a whole lot of clear weather forecast for the coming week - there looks like more of a chance of more snow on the way. General weather conditions might not be the best today, but there should be no complaints about snow conditions for those making it out! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 420cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 340cm Maiko Snow Resort: 370cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 365cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 2nd February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1034cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 40 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 55cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
