  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 3rd May 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 1243cm Posted on Saturday 3rd May 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday the wind seemed to be around until around the middle of the day and then we got rain. Not nice, and not great for the snow. This morning the runs at GALA Yuzawa are looking in much better shape than they were yesterday morning. They have clearly been busy moving some snow around and trying to patch things up. From the webcam images, it looks like they have done a pretty good! The ski area has stated the intention to remain open through Tuesday as originally planned. Gambatte! Not good news from Kagura, though. Mitsumata Ropeway is going to be out of action for the whole day today, due to some kind of mechanical trouble. Oh dear. That means Kagura will only be open via Tashiro Ropeway - and only 4 Tashiro ski lifts will be open. The Tashiro car park is going to fill up very quickly. (I wonder if the ski area will provide a shuttle bus or something from Mitsumata car park? No such news is available at time of this report). That situation is very unfortunate timing with today being the first of four holidays and lots of people expected to be around. 8:00am update: The ski area has said that the Tashiro car park is already full. (But no official word on any kind of special shuttle bus service). It is a cloudy start to the day but we might get some sun. Currently there is a chance of some light rain at times tomorrow, but back to sun on Monday. ---------------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 3rd May 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 5th May 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 1243cm Posted on Monday 5th May 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 6pm update: Sad news to report this evening. GALA Yuzawa has announced that the southerly winds forecast for tomorrow mean that the ski area will not be able to open. Effectively that means today was the last day of the ski season at GALA Yuzawa. Otsukaresama deshita. Kagura ski area has also announced that the Tashiro Area will be closed tomorrow. A decision will be made tomorrow morning regarding the Mitsumata Ropeway and Kagura section of the ski area. Original morning report: Good morning. It almost felt cold at times yesterday! Foggy conditions too, making it not feel like Golden Week at all! Happily, today should be a big improvement and we should get to enjoy some clear skies, sunshine and warmth (though it might not get to 20C in town). Tomorrow is the last day of the season for GALA Yuzawa and the Tashiro Area of Kagura. Currently the forecast for tomorrow seems to be cloudy with a chance of rain. There also seems to be a fair chance of some blowy southerly winds again. Best to get some last turns in at GALA today as strong southerly winds might cause problems tomorrow. If there is any related news by late evening, we'll update this report. Tomorrow will also be the last Yuzawa Now daily report of the season. Beyond tomorrow, we'll keep you informed of what is happening at Kagura a few times a week until it closes. ---------------------------- Ski area information for Monday 5th May 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Due to forecasts winds, GALA Yuzawa is not open today. It is an unfortunate way to end the season, but can't be helped. Today was also the planned closing last day of the season for the Tashiro Area of Kagura, but that is also closed today for the same reason. So that means just the Mitsumata Ropeway remains open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Rain this morning and again not very warm as the unseasonable kind of changeable weather continues. There might be some sun later on, though. The ski area has not said it explicitly, so exact status is unclear this morning, but it seems the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is now not available as a ski run (they are listed as closed on the official site, meaning you would need to take the lift down). Again, unconfirmed as we approach 8:00am this morning. The Kagura quad seems to be on hold due to wind. Sometimes it really feels like some ski areas view providing clear information as being a bit of a chore. (Readers of some of the other Now reports on SnowJapan will know that is not just a Kagura/Yuzawa thing. Sigh!) Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We enjoyed sunshine and warmth yesterday. It was feeling borderline hot in the afternoon. Today starts with bright but overcast skies and we expect some sun later. Forecasts currently show the chance of some light rain at times over the weekend. Some seem to be wondering if Kagura might be tempted to extend the season beyond Sunday. There might well be enough snow up there, but it seems extremely unlikely. (A 'final day' event - free pork soup and a raffle! - is planned at the Mitsumata Ropeway base station from 2pm on Sunday). Unless there is any major changes to operations or news from Kagura, we'll post again on Friday and then a last report to end the season on Sunday. --------------- Kagura Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): 220cm (top) 210cm (base) Lifts operating (scheduled): Mitsumata Ropeway Mitsumata Number 1 quad Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift Kagura gondola Kagura Number 1 quad Number 1 romance pair (weekend only) Courses open (scheduled): Kagura main course Kagura main course bypass Technical course Giant course Kagura connecting course Panorama course Gondola course Family course (Mitsumata Area) Gondola Line course (Mitsumata Area) Mitsumata Ropeway is open from 8:00am until 4:30pm (last one going up at 3:00pm) The Tashiro Ropeway / Tashiro Area is now closed for the season Planned closing date: Sunday 18th May 2025 Yuzawa Now 2024-2025 season Data as of Wednesday 14th May 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 1243cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 74 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 62cm (20th February) November 2024 snowfall 0cm December 2024 snowfall 352cm reported on 20 days January 2025 snowfall 286cm reported on 18 days February 2025 snowfall 539cm reported on 23 days March 2025 snowfall 66cm reported on 13 days April 2025 snowfall 0cm May 2025 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Hopefully, wind will not be an issue on Sunday and the ski area will be able to open for one last day of the season. Original morning report: Good morning from Yuzawa. It is a bright morning with a kind of overcast feel, with thin cloud early on. There seems to be a chance of some light rain from time to time across the weekend. Let's hope we get lucky and it holds off. It is impressive how good the snow cover still is at Kagura (check out the image below). I can't remember the ski area closing in mid-May with so much snow left. The ski area could clearly continue beyond Sunday, but there have been no hints that they will. Sunday is scheduled to be the last day of the season. If you fancy some traditional pork soup and taking part in a raffle, be sure to be at the Mitsumata Ropeway base around 2pm on Sunday. While stocks last! One last update to end the season due on Sunday. --------------- Kagura Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): 180cm (top) 80cm (base) Lifts operating (scheduled): Mitsumata Ropeway Mitsumata Number 1 quad Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift Kagura gondola Kagura Number 1 quad Number 1 romance pair (weekend only --- though not 100% confirmed for this last weekend) Courses open (scheduled): Kagura main course Kagura main course bypass Technical course Giant course Kagura connecting course Panorama course Gondola course Family course (Mitsumata Area) Gondola Line course (Mitsumata Area) Mitsumata Ropeway is open from 8:00am until 4:30pm (last one going up at 3:00pm) The Tashiro Ropeway / Tashiro Area is now closed for the season Planned closing date: Sunday 18th May 2025 Yuzawa Now 2024-2025 season Data as of Friday 16th May 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 1243cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 74 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 62cm (20th February) November 2024 snowfall 0cm December 2024 snowfall 352cm reported on 20 days January 2025 snowfall 286cm reported on 18 days February 2025 snowfall 539cm reported on 23 days March 2025 snowfall 66cm reported on 13 days April 2025 snowfall 0cm May 2025 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 18th May 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 1243cm Posted on Sunday 18th May 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today is the last day of operations at Kagura ski area. The ski area is open with 6 lifts operating and 10 courses/runs still available. Kagura is still reporting a snow depth of 150cm up top. Impressive. From tomorrow, all ski lifts across the region will be able to take a long and well-earned rest. Most ski areas in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City closed 6-7 weeks ago, of course. That feels like such a long time ago! How was the Yuzawa season this time around? Let’s take a look at some observed snowfall numbers. November 2024: 0cm December 2024: 352cm January 2025: 286cm February 2025: 549cm March 2025: 66cm April 2025: 0cm 2024-2025 season: 1253cm 2023-2024 season: 713cm 2022-2023 season: 795cm 2021-2022 season: 1338cm 2020-2021 season: 1109cm 2019-2020 season: 425cm 2018-2019 season: 1042cm 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm The above data is snowfall we observed during each season since 2012. The numbers are comparable - they are observed by the same person from the same location (town level in Yuzawa) and using the same methods. Of course, this is town level, so there will be more snow at higher elevations. Sometimes much more. It’s a really varied bunch of numbers, isn’t it - ranging from just 424cm (2015-2016 season) to 1338cm (2021-2022 season). The 1253cm that we observed in our reposts this last season was one of the higher numbers and clearly a very good showing. We had a bit of a dry period in the second part of January. Still, other than that, we generally enjoyed consistent snowfall from when it started snowing in the second week of December through the end of February. Ski areas were happily able to open and close on their planned dates. The biggest drama of the season was the snowfall in February, clearly a standout month. A whopping 549cm of snowfall was observed in these reports (on 24 of the 28 days in the month). As it was happening, at times it felt like the snow would never stop... and was somewhat overwhelming. Even people who absolutely love mad bonkers snowfall (like me) were secretly starting to want it to ease off. GALA Yuzawa ski area actually decided to close for a whole day in order to cope with the massive amounts of snow (for the first time ever). It is interesting to see that only the month of December 2014 (559cm) beat February 2025 (549cm) in terms of monthly snowfall. Also interesting to recall that we only observed 79cm of snowfall in February 2024. Only 66cm of snowfall observed in town since the beginning of March, but the fact that Kagura is closing in the middle of May with so much snow still remaining on the slopes goes to show how much snow we got. So yes, 2024-2025 was a good one regarding snowfall. And I can confirm that there were lots of excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions to enjoy! There were a lot of people around, too. I do not know visitor numbers/statistics, but there were clearly more ‘inbound’ visitors around. That trend will surely continue. The frogs are now singing loudly in the evenings, and there have been hints of humidity. The hot and humid period of the year is fast approaching. We'll have to put up with 'rainy season', which will hopefully be over by the time the Fuji Rock Festival is held at Naeba in late July. The hot summer weather will probably continue into September and then, before you know it, we'll be looking forward to cooler weather and the prospect of fresh snow again. (That last bit sounds good). These Yuzawa Now reports will be back in November. Let’s hope we will be able to report over 10m of snow again during the 2025-2026 season. But whatever happens, SnowJapan will be here to tell you about it without the slightest hint of hype. (Of course). I hope you enjoyed our reporting. SnowJapan is updated throughout the year and information from ski areas about the 2025-2026 season will start being checked and updated in summer (with most of that work happening in the autumn months). Thanks for reading. See you in November. Good memories. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 5th November 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 0cm Posted on Wednesday 5th November 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Greetings from Yuzawa. November already! The brutal heat of summer 2025 seemed to last something like forever (mid-June through mid-September), but it did eventually ease off. What a relief that was! In recent days we have had some chilly and almost cold at times. It feels good to reach for a jacket. The mountains are looking lovely and colourful at the moment, and we can see a nice topping of snow visible on higher elevations in the region. The main run at Kagura Ski Area has a covering of snow. It looks like there might have been 10cm or so up there yesterday. Below are the planned opening dates of the ski areas in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. All of those planned dates are, of course, subject to change depending on snow and weather conditions. Fingers crossed that we will be treated to a) an early start to the season, b) regular snow and c) lots of snow! Reports will be posted here from time to time over the coming weeks bringing you news of fresh snowfall. -------------------------------- Here are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 12th November 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 0cm Posted on Wednesday 12th November 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have had a fair amount of rain (and some snow higher up) in recent days but today is a beauty. Full on autumn colours and that sprinkling of snow on the top. Beautiful. Kagura still has a bit of snow cover (looks like it might be about 10cm+ or so) and still has a planned opening date of 22nd November. Of course, whether the ski area is able to open or not will depend on how the weather pans out over the next 10 days. A cold front is due early next week. The official course map of Kagura is now available. One thing I quickly noticed: The Mitsumata Number 2 quad lift - the one close to the top station of the Mitsumata Ropeway - is still 'sort of' shown on the map, but it is not named like the other lifts. It is still on the list of ski lifts on the official site, too, but no opening times are shown. Is that lift being abolished? I can't find any kind of official announcement. Situation unclear. I'm not saying this is the case here, but sometimes ski areas tend to be a bit shy talking about things like this, and just do it on the quiet. We'll try to find out what the situation is. -------------------------------- Here are the planned opening dates for ski areas around Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma.
