The 2 Kitanomine life (Lift G) is also closed, which is quite rare, but will probably open in the afternoon as the wind is supposed to die down a bit. Amazingly, the Furano Zone is completely open, as the wind is not hitting over there, but it is r@!ning. Should be moderately windy all day tomorrow as well, but no r@!n forecast. The sunniness should resume on Tuesday. Think snow. Well, it's the last day of February and we end the month with... some rain and mild conditions. Not great. Niseko Village is saying light snow up top, but the other three main ski areas are reporting light rain. Of course, Niseko Village reports 0cm of snowfall almost every time when there's clearly a lot of snowfall. So, pinches of salt etc. All lifts opening as planned, but peak gates closed. I'll probably have lots of words in my monthly recap tomorrow, so I'll just leave it there for now and be with you again tomorrow. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: +3℃, light rain. Moiwa 800m:+0.5℃, NW1.9m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -0.4℃, W1.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -0.1℃, NNE0.5m/s. Hanazono 800m: -+0.6℃, N0.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape S2m/s, Kamui Cape calm, 1013hPa, wave 0.8m. Beware of cracks collapsing across the mountain, including under lift lines, due to the rising temperatures and rain. With the poor visibility from rain and strong winds at the top of the mountain, all peak gates will be closed. Please follow the patrol instructions. Do not duck ropes. The mountain is transitioning into spring, with alternating periods of cold and warm weather. The risk of large-scale avalanches in the valleys is increasing. In Niseko, a heavy snow region, cornices and snowdrifts that develop downwind can suddenly collapse, causing massive full-depth avalanches. Also, on Mt. Yotei, strong southwesterly snowstorms after the passing of a low pressure system can cause large-scale surface avalanches. Avalanches are natural phenomena, and as long as no one is present, no accidents will occur. Don’t be overconfident. Caution prevents accidents. Make sure your beacon is working. A beacon will not only save your own life, but also the lives of your companions. As such I don't have a whole lot to report. What I can say is there's no new cm of snow and a largely cloudy start with what looks like limited visibility higher up. Generally cloudy skies are forecast. Currently just under 0C. Doing this very early report confirms to me the good logic of aiming to post just after 8:30am most days. Update: data updated below and... top lifts on hold. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -0.5℃, light wind, light snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -2.7℃, ESE2.0m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -4.2℃, SSE1.1m/s. Village 1000m: -3.3℃, SSW2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -3.7℃, N5.5m/s. Hanazono 800m: -2.0℃, N2.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape S6m/s, Kamui Cape E2m/s, 1024hPa, wave 0.6. The isobars are wide, calm at sea and on the mountains. Only light snowfall and fog above 700m. Also there is no significant cornice or snowdrift development. Observations and data indicate a low general avalanche risk. Gate opening will be determined when visibility improves. Please follow patrol instructions. Due to the increasing number of visitors to Niseko in recent years, gate opening and closing must be done carefully. The risk of full-depth avalanches in the spring is increasing. Do not wait in the valley bottom, this is an avalanche path. Also, do not pass through the lower part of Yunosawa restricted area on your way back to your lodging. If this becomes a regular occurrence, accidents will occur again. Bright and sunny with a very thin layer of cloud, giving us a slightly hazy kind of look. The Avalanche Report is mentioning cold air, though cold isn't what I felt when I was outside just now. Admittedly at a much later point in the morning. (Sorry for being naughty with my late report today). Proceedings feel increasingly, dare I say it, 'spring-like'... a feeling quite possibly influenced by the very spring conditions that many regions of Japan are currently experiencing and no imminent heavy snow being mentioned on forecasts. We are still in February, right? I'll no doubt have more thoughts on all that in my monthly review, coming in the first days of March. Going back to dreaming about fresh snow again, perhaps we will get some on Saturday. Under a high-pressure system, cold air is flowing in; while the wave heights are low, east winds are blowing strong in high elevation. You won’t find much fresh snow even if you look, but it is a good day for a mountain hike. Temperatures will rise during the day, accelerating snowmelt. According to reports from the Hanazono Patrol, a crack has appeared in the “Jackson” area on the East Ridge. Based on the ripples formation below the crack, there is a danger of it developing into a full-depth glide avalanche. Please use caution. From now on, cracks will begin to open in various parts of the mountain. These cracks are often not visible from above; be careful while riding. Winds are strong on the Hirafu side. Gate openings will depend on lift operations; follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Glide avalanches are preceded by cracks on the slope and can therefore be predicted, but sometimes the avalanche occurs the moment the crack forms. Past incidents show that full-depth avalanches in Kozan-no-sawa and Annupuri Osawa occur suddenly, sweeping down trees and scouring the terrain. To prevent accidents, do not stay at the bottom of the gullies. The meticulously groomed runs are fun to ride. Do not enter strictly prohibited areas in search of snow. I had one less layer on than usual, though it still felt quite warm out there. It still feels way too early for spring conditions, but that is where we find outselves at this point. If we are lucky we might see some fresh snow in higher elevations on Saturday, according to some forecast, and there is some (how much?!?) more appearing on longer-range forecasts.
