Your reporter is back out on the golf course, or should I say the cross-country ski course for the second day of racing, for levels from primary school to adult men. It's raining pretty steadily, which will make for a pretty miserable day out there (bad enough for us sitting under tents; I feel for the kids running around out there). I was pleased to see that most of the lifts at Akakan were running yesterday, and their website shows this today (Hotel No. 5 and Champion No. 3 are not running). We’re just going to make it on snow for the race today, with this rain, and possibly strong winds, certainly going to melt more of what is just barely covering the ground. Bare spots are also showing on the runs, so be careful out there! Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: S 7m/s. Kamui Cape: ENE 3m/s, 1020hPa, wave height unknown. Southerly winds are relatively strong on the Hirafu side, but all summit gates are expected to open. Ask the ski patrol opinions before entering the mountains. Do not ski in the gully bottoms of Kozan-no-sawa (Backbowl) or Annupuri Osawa. The risk of full-depth avalanches is increasing. Your writer is out at the final cross-country event of the year, sitting way out on the course checking on the passing racers. It’s a sunny day with a ton of pollen blowing past us, plus a good serving of kosa dust. One retraction of sorts: I had reported Akakura Onsen as closing yesterday, but they will be open today and tomorrow as well, although with just one lift running, it seems. Just waiting for Akakan to update—I might have to submit this without new lift info in.... Yesterday was the last day of the season for Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field... and also Hakuba Norikura Onsen (I might have got mixed up yesterday, my apologies). Today is the last day of the season for Hakuba Cortina. From tomorrow, we'll be down to the 'big 4' that plan to continue until 6th May... if there's enough snow to allow that, of course. With a combination of warm temps, sunny/hazy outlook, birds singing while they do their busy thing, and lots of humans sneezing and having runny noses because of hay fever! Lower ski runs are no longer open, but there's still a fair amount of terrain available un the upper section of the mountain. Please check the list below. It's a cloudy kind of spring morning with some blue sky and some sun in places. Having said that, visibility is looking limited on the higher Hirafu webcams at the start of the day. I have taken out the 'new snowfall' bits of my daily list (below). If we do get lucky enough to get any fresh snow, I will of course let you know here in my commentary. Moiwa 800m: -0.8°C, WNW4.4m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -2.7°C, WSW3.7m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -1.5°C, W1.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -2.2°C, N2.4m/s. Hanazono 800m: +0.3°C, NNE1.7m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: WSW6m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW6m/s, 1018hPa, wave n/a. Snowmelt is progressing and at lower elevations in the Hirafu area some connecting paths are impassable. Do not try to pass through restricted areas. There is a risk of avalanches from side walls. Large-scale full-depth avalanches have begun to occur on south faces. Do not use the Yunosawa restricted area as a return route down. The risk of avalanches from the side walls will increase in the afternoon. Due to dense fog, gate opening is undecided, please follow patrol instructions. Hanazono Gate 5 is expected to be open. Do not traverse over to the cornice, there is the risk of sudden collapse. One track can lead others to follow and increase the probability of accidents. This report will soon finish this season. Today I will post photos from spring 2012. Do not underestimate the danger of avalanches. It actually looks like it might be snowing on one of the webcams. I am too early to have an opening time status update on lifts this morning, but it did feel a bit windy when I was out a bit earlier. I have touched on this before. In some ways, I am currently feeling a bit like how I felt when covid-19 was looming over the late part of the 2019-2020 season (re: heavy world events that affect us all). Being light-hearted and genki is very much how I like to be, but I am admittedly finding that to be a challenge at this moment. So, again, my apologies - I share these thoughts as I see this daily commentary as more than just me telling you about snow and sun. I'll try not to mention this again. I do plan to continue posting my reports as usual right through until the end of the season when the lifts close. Actually, it's a bit wild to think that there's still over a month left. I hope you have a good weekend and do stuff you enjoy. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base: +2°C, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -0.8°C, SSE0.7m/s, no snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -2.3°C, SW1.1m/s, no snowfall, light fog. Niseko Village 1000m: -1.6°C, SW1.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -1.7°C,N2.3m/s. Hanazono 800m:+1.1°C, NNE6.4m/s. Coastal Data. Benkei Cape: S9m/s. Kamui Cape: ENE3m/s, 1015hPa, wave n/a. The isobars are wide, and the sea and mountains are calm. Light rain above 700m and snowmelt will continue after 10am. Cracks are getting bigger on the Kozan no Sawa creek sidewall around 1000m and Moiwa Mikaeri at 750m. Be careful of full-depth avalanches; you won’t get caught if you stay out of the valley. In April, the risk of full-depth avalanches increases in the Kozan no Sawa and Annupuri Osawa around 1100m. Be careful. Also expect full-depth avalanches in the restricted areas of Harunotaki, Yunosawa, Anbetsu Valley and the closed Mizunosawa until the snow is gone. Never enter, in particular, do not use Yunosawa as a route back to the mountain base. If you are caught in one of these avalanches, its a death sentence. This information is issued to prevent accidents outside of the ski resort in Niseko. Even if the cause of an accident is known afterward, it is meaningless. The dead cannot be brought back. Just like fires, prevention is the best approach. I don’t like saying this everyday, but nature is a harsh mistress. Gate opening is undecided due to poor visibility at the peak. Please follow the patrols instructions. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. I hope that we have a weekend of good spring weather. It certainly looks like it will be warm. Like, 16C or 17C warm in the village! Poka-poka! Come early week we might start to see some rain. Maybe even some snow on Tuesday, on the mountains at least?! Just a few days left of operation for a few ski areas in the region. Once we are down to the last big four, I'll post more details about operations. I still find it quite amusing how Tsugaike has '#footbath' tagged on to most of the facebook posts it makes.
