Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 774cm Good morning from Niseko. I can just about justify another 1cm in this report. Hirafu is reporting up to 5cm (though it should be noted that they do seem to think in units of 5cm, rather than in units of 1cm). But the handful of cm on the mountain is nice to see, albeit far from being a proper reset, of course. There might be some more tomorrow. A mix of cloud, blue sky and sun in places as I prepare this report. There is a wind, too, with all but the base lift at Annupuri on hold. Other lifts all appear to be scheduled to open as normal. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -1℃, light snowfall and frozen. Moiwa 800m: -4.8℃, WNW8.1m/s (20m/s@3am), slight snowfall but cornices have developed with the wind. Annupuri 1100m: -8℃, WNW9.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.2℃, E3.5m/s, snow surface frozen and firm. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW16m/s, Kamui cape SW14m/s, 1010hPa, 1.7m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steep with the Low on the Okhotsk Sea and a 15+m/s westerly wind is blowing over the Japan Sea and the Niseko mountain range. Snowfall is minimal, but thin and fragile cornices have formed with drifting snow in 800m elevation slopes of the eastern side of the mountain. The wind is forecasted to calm down before noon. Peak gates opening will be delayed. Please follow the patrollers’ instructions. An avalanche caused by a falling cornice occurred on 19th January 1990 and 5 Niseko Jr-highschool students were caught in but eventually rescued. Even when the snowfall amount is small, the wind can carry the snow and make large cornices grow. Beware of newly formed cornices as they’re very fragile and can collapse anytime. And as always, beware of hitting trees and avoid riding the valley bottoms. Glide avalanches can happen on cold days too. Don’t duck ropes! People will mimic and eventually, an unlucky person will pay the price. The mountain is firm on and off piste. Ski carefully and have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Saturday 29th March 2025 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 782cm Good morning from Niseko. A nice surprise making for a fine end to the month with 8cm of snow on the ground and colder conditions. At higher elevations, Hirafu is reporting 10cm and Hanazono is reporting 12cm of fresh snowfall. Annupuri is saying up to 7cm. (And Village is, of course, going with its usual 0cm). It is still snowing at higher elevations though struggling down at base areas. I can see a few small patches of blue sky, though it remains mostly cloudy. But, yes... nice! That takes us up to 76cm for the month, and beating the snowfall number from March last season. Yey! I will post my monthly review thingy tomorrow morning. Sun is expected tomorrow, along with warming temperatures again. A big thank you and otsukaresama deshita to the good folks providing the Avalanche Reports, the last one of the season below. And, remember, this is also the last day for operations at Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu this season. Anyway, I'm going to go and enjoy this fresh snow! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -6℃, 10cm new snow, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -8.6℃, NW10.3m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -10.7℃, WNW11.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.1℃, SSE4.3m/s, 5cm new snow, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW16m/s, Kamui Cape W13m/s, 1024hPa, wave 1.5m. Cold air has come in and winter has returned. Above 800m, 15-30cm snowdrifts have formed slabs on the lee side of ridges. From data evaluation, there is the possibility of up to 40cm surface avalanches on cornice slopes this morning. If the wind drops, peak gates are expected to open. Please respect the patrol’s judgment. The snow is good, but you will still hit the bottom. The risk of full-depth avalanches continues on the open, steep slopes of Osawa, Kozan no Sawa, Higashi-one, Moiwa Bowl, etc. In particular, cracks are beginning to widen on Kozan no Sawa sidewalls and the West Ridge around 1,100m. Avoid going near them. Always use good judgment off the trails and in the mountains. Although it is not mandatory, carrying a beacon is recommended. Having one will increase the chances of saving your life and the lives of your friends. This is the last avalanche information for this season. There is no safety in this sport. We would like to thank the resort ski resort patrols and snow groomer operators who work hard every day to prevent accidents. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Monday 31st March 2025 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. - Niseko Now: Tuesday 1st April 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko. It is a lovely morning with lots of blue sky and some friendly looking clouds. The sun is shining through my window. Hanazono actually seems to be reporting up to 8cm of snow on upper areas (and 1cm) at base which is interesting. I think some investigation is required! (My 1cm in this report is from yesterday... it was snowing quite nicely at one point!) OK, so Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area is now closed for the season, and has turned off webcams. Niseko Hanazono, Niseko Village, Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Moiwa all still remain open. ------------------------------------ A look back at the season so far: until the end of March 2025 I can hardly believe that we are already into April. I suppose that is probably always my thoughts when it gets to this part of the season. Cliché alert, but time goes so fast. (I suppose that means I must have been having fun!) At the same time, I have been writing these daily reports for the best part of 5 months now, so that seems like a (very) long time! I'm at that stage where I am still enjoying it all, but also starting to look forward to a proper rest in about a month or so. It's a tradition that I start my recap with important points to keep in mind when reading my data and comments. As a reminder and also for any newcomers who have only recently found these reports. The snowfall numbers I am introducing in these reports are all the snowfall measurements I observed near the base of Hirafu. The monthly and annual numbers in these reports are comparable because they are coming to you from the same spot and being observed by the same person every day over the last 13 seasons. Also, 'Observed snowfall at base' is not the whole story of how the season is going, and it does not take into account the fact that there is often more snow at higher elevations or snow quality. Here are my observed snowfall numbers for March 2025: March 2025: 76cm March 2024: 70cm March 2023: 32cm March 2022: 81cm March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm Snowfall was reported on 15 days in March. We got some quite decent snowfall around mid-month (and also the snowfall for the last day of the month). That provided some very excite time for the people still here to enjoy it. Yey! Overall, the numbers for March were about average for the the last decade or so. And I really can't think of much else to say. Here are the total snowfall numbers for the season so far: 2024/2025 season up to the end of March 2025: 782cm 2023/2024 season up to the end of March 2023: 879cm 2022/2023 season up to the end of March 2022: 1006cm 2021/2022 season up to the end of March 2021: 1135cm 2020/2021 season up to the end of March 2020: 1201cm 2019/2020 season up to the end of March 2019: 718cm 2018/2019 season up to the end of March 2018: 945cm 2017/2018 season up to the end of March 2017: 1247cm 2016/2017 season up to the end of March 2016: 686cm 2015/2016 season up to the end of March 2015: 983cm 2014/2015 season up to the end of March 2014: 1141cm 2013/2014 season up to the end of March 2013: 1150cm 2012/2013 season up to the end of March 2012: 1459cm At the beginning of each season, I always hope that I will get to observe/report over 10m of snow. (Remember: observed at base, not up top). Alas, it was not to be, and that was becoming apparent in January. I doubt we'll get 2+m over the next few weeks. Here's how much snowfall I have recorded during previous seasons in April. The numbers in brackets show the total observed snowfall at the end of the season. April 2024: 5cm (884cm) April 2023: 0cm (1006cm) April 2022: 2cm (1137cm) April 2021: 9cm (1210cm) April 2020: 10cm (728cm) April 2019: 6cm (951cm) April 2018: 13cm (1260cm) April 2017: 0cm (686cm) April 2016: 6cm (989cm) April 2015: 3cm (1144cm) April 2014: 13cm (1163cm) April 2013: 32cm (1491cm) So, we shouldn't expect much more this season. Anything from now through Golden Week in early May is just a fun bonus. All the statistics can be found here and here. Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area is now closed for the season. I usually get to say that in early May, so it feels very odd saying that right at the beginning of April. The official reason for the early closure is that they want to start work on construction work, including the King Number 3 lift. (It will be 'reborn' as a 6-seater high-speed lift in December this year). I recently read that 13,748 people used the Asahigaoka ski area (behind Kutchan Station) this season. That is the largest number of people using that ski area in 15 years. I have mentioned Asahigaoka before in these reports. It is only small and not on the main mountain, but lift tickets are way (way) cheaper than the resorts and it gets nowhere near as busy. Obviously, it doesn't have that expensive resort status 'appeal' (?) - there are no pop-up shops selling posh bags for whiskey there! And you can buy over 10 full one-day tickets at Asahigaoka for the price of one 29 minute early bird ticket at Hanazono just a few km up the road. (It's mad when you think of it like that, right?) Asahigaoka feels more like a flashback to 'normal ski areas' in Japan. Perhaps it is a sign that some visitors are increasingly open to check out other places. (I think that is a good thing. I recommend it). Perhaps more people are getting wary of crowds and everything being very expensive. (Yes, I know some overseas visitors still do not see Niseko as being particularly expensive). Or it could be a sign there are Japanese locals who still want to ski and avoid the expense of the famous destinations. For many, those feel increasingly out of reach. Anyway, I plan to continue posting reports daily until the last ski lifts of the season close. All being well, that will be on Tuesday 6th May. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko. Hanazono this morning reporting another 3cm of snow up top, but there's none down at base levels. It is, however, snowing lightly. Unfortunately it is windy again and at the start of the day all top lifts are on hold, so it's limited operations across the mountain this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko. It's rather overcast early on this morning though forecasts indicate we may get some sun. Not much wind. Forecasts for Sunday onwards are looking interesting. Heavy rain into Monday along with a lot of wind, and then some snow on upper mountain areas? Sunday is the last day of the ski season at Niseko Hanazono. From Monday, only Niseko Annupuri ski area will remain open. Someone asked about that fabulous 'Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ice Chalet Pop-Up Store & Bar' structure by the Hanazono lifts. Sadly, of course, we can no longer buy posh bags for our bottles of whisky. As far as I know, it's just standing there unused. Like I said before, I think they should have put some toasters in there - luxury ones, of course - and call it 'Toast' for the remainder of the season. Everyone loves toast. It would have been jolly popular. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Friday 11th April 2025 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko. Hmmm. It's another cloudy, foggy and wet morning. It's not very nice out there. Hard to imagine many people getting ready to put on their boots right now. But, all power to them! While other regions of Japan might be looking forward to some sustained fine and sunny and warm weather over the first part of Golden Week, we are going to continue having varied conditions featuring rain (and possibly even wet snow at higher elevations). ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Friday 25th April 2025 The information below is manually checked for each report using official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko. Lots of cloud this morning, some of it looking threatening (over at Annupuri), but with some blue sky in places too. I hope for some sunshine today and tomorrow. It always feels better ending the season with sunshine. Anyway, it looks like Annupuri has the Jumbo Number 3 pair lift operating today. I'm not sure what the story is there (and I can't find any official news/announcement about that). It's my last report of the season tomorrow and it will likely appear later than usual. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Greetings Niseko-loving friends. Clouds around this morning and windy conditions forecast. Looks like the top lift at Annupuri might not be opening as scheduled this morning. That's as of nearly 8am, so things may change by the time the ski area plans to be open at 9am. We still have mixed weather forecast over the next four days. - Niseko Now: Tuesday 6th May 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko on this last day of the official ski season. We have some blue skies and sunshine to celebrate and contemplate. The three lifts at Annupuri will be able to rest from tomorrow. As will I. It seems such a long time since Hirafu closed at the end of March... -------------------------------------- A look back at the 2024-2025 Niseko season... and some thoughts The official snow season ends today, with Niseko Annupuri Ski Resort closing this afternoon. So, after another long season, it is time for me to wrap things up for another year. First, I'll talk about snowfall. As always, I would like to emphasise some important points. The snowfall numbers I introduce in my reports are all snowfall measurements I have observed close to the base of the Niseko Grand Tokyu Hirafu ski area. The monthly and annual statistics in these reports are comparable because they are coming to you from the same location and being observed by the same person (me) every day over the last 13 seasons. While consistent and comparable (and honest), it is important to note that my 'observed snowfall at base' is by no means the whole story of a season. For example, the data does not consider the fact that there is often more snowfall at higher elevations than down at base. While SnowJapan does not encourage readers to compare the different 'Now' reports from various regions of Japan (for all sorts of good reasons), all report sections do adhere to the same concept and same rules. For example, the snowfall recorded in the Myoko Now reports is observed snowfall from the base of the Myoko ski areas, etc. I don't live at the top of the mountain, so I (and other reporters) couldn't provide you with consistent upper elevation stats even if I wanted to anyway. Very importantly, of course, the quantity of snow does not tell us about quality or skiing conditions. With that all out of the way... With 1cm of observed snowfall reported in April 2025, the total snowfall I observed for the 2024-2025 season was 783cm, with snow reported on 95 days of the season. Here's how the season totals compare over the last 13 seasons: 2024/2025 season: 783cm 2023/2024 season: 884cm 2022/2023 season: 1006cm 2021/2022 season: 1137cm 2020/2021 season: 1210cm 2019/2020 season: 728cm 2018/2019 season: 951cm 2017/2018 season: 1260cm 2016/2017 season: 686cm 2015/2016 season: 989cm 2014/2015 season: 1144cm 2013/2014 season: 1163cm 2012/2013 season: 1491cm The average of all those numbers is about 1033cm. If you don't count the 2024-2025 season, the average of the previous 12 seasons was 1054cm. From the above data, it is clear that the numbers for 2024-2025 are 'below average'. However, again, that does not give a detailed picture of the season as a whole, and it says nothing about the quality of the snow that we got. Month by month November 2024: 38cm, with snowfall reported on 8 days December 2024: 311cm, with snowfall reported on 28 days January 2025: 161cm, with snowfall reported on 19 days February 2025: 196cm, with snowfall reported on 24 days March 2025: 76cm, with snowfall reported on 15 days April 2025: 1cm, with snowfall reported on 1 day December was the standout month of the 2024-2025 season here in Niseko. I observed snowfall on an impressive 28 days in December 2024, and we enjoyed good and consistent snowfall. The period around the middle of the month was particularly excellent. Oh yes. 😊 A lot of snowfall during the early part of any season is always a particularly good thing. It puts any early-season nerves at ease, lets the mountain open up smoothly (in theory, at least), and sets the tone for the season. People got very excited. Myself included. Some days, I even forgot to eat my toast before heading out. And that's saying something! Still, not to take anything away from it, and exciting as it certainly was, I don't look at it as 'record-breaking' as some breathless headlines I noticed were making it out to be. For example, in my reports, I have observed more snowfall in six other Decembers since 2012 than in December 2024. Here they are: December 2024 (311cm) December 2022 (336cm) December 2020 (348cm) December 2018 (333cm) December 2017 (406cm) December 2014 (519cm) December 2012 (418cm) Perhaps the fact that over 3m of snowfall is 'below average' for us demonstrates the high standards that we experience and expect here. Anyway, to look back at the feelings as it was happening at the time, you can find my monthly recap, posted on 1st January 2025. With the very promising start in December 2024, were we on the verge of a truly 'record-breaking' season? Well, the snowfall in the first half of January was respectable, if not spectacular. All good. But the momentum really slowed down in the second half of the month. I only got to report 3cm of fresh snowfall (from base) in my reports between 19th and 28th January 2025. For peak season, it was a poor showing. Happily, the month ended with several days of snowfall, which saved us from more embarrassing numbers. My monthly recap was posted on 3rd February 2025. The above report also featured the exciting news of the (very) special early morning lift ticket at Niseko Hanazono. That ticket was valid for just 29 minutes and cost 20,000 yen. (Ten, please!) February 2025 had fewer days but beat January in terms of snowfall data. My monthly recap was posted on 3rd March 2025. Then, in March 2025, I observed 76cm of snowfall. The recap was posted on 1st April 2025: Some final thoughts Knowing that this last report continues to be the most visible 'latest report' for nearly six months, I have been carefully considering my final thoughts over the last few weeks. I recommend going back and reading through all the reports to get a full commentary and various random thoughts about the season as it was happening. But if I may be so bold, there are several things I'd like to leave you with before I say goodbye. None of this is new or 'news', but there might be some things for potential visitors to consider. 2024-2025 might have been less-than-average in terms of snowfall numbers, but I think it's important to remember that that means less-than-average… for Niseko. I guess many other destinations in the world would be more than pleased to have had our snowfall. I got to enjoy some excellent days, particularly in (but not limited to) December. People visiting in the second half of January were unlucky with the lack of fresh snow. I felt for those people, especially the powder seekers amongst them, but hopefully, they still found things to enjoy. Niseko is unlike (almost every) other ski area destination in Japan If you are considering coming to Niseko for the first time, be aware that it is unlike any other ski area/resort in Japan (though some are trying to emulate it). And if you are coming for the first time in quite a while, prepare to find somewhere transformed from what you used to know. In many people's eyes, including those of Japanese people, this destination no longer feels much like Japan at all. If you want an 'authentic Japanese experience', this is not really the place for you. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that in itself. But if you want a much more overall Japanese feel, there are literally hundreds of other ski areas in Japan to choose from. Many will be less busy, too. Handily, you can find details on all of them on this website. (Though it has to be noted that few can compete with the quality of our snow when Niseko is on form). Niseko is posh and expensive - and does not hide it For the most part, Niseko now effectively ignores the domestic Japanese skier market and is almost exclusively targeted to inbound foreign visitors. As such, it is extremely expensive compared to most other Japanese ski resorts. (Again, a handful of others are going the same way). If you want to, you can ski in Japan at a fraction of the cost of skiing in Niseko. You might even meet some Japanese people! (*) Things like the previously mentioned 20,000 yen lift ticket valid for just 29 minutes and the special pop-up shop selling posh bags for expensive bottles of whisky were just a few headline things proudly demonstrating what Niseko is becoming. (Has become?) That those things exist also probably says much about the kind of people Niseko - the brand - is now trying to appeal to. If you love exclusive posh stuff and that modern international ski resort vibe, and can afford it (and wish to play along with it), you have found your place. Even if a few infrastructure facilities are yet to catch up! It will be interesting to see how the yen exchange rates move this year. Niseko prices are difficult for people living in Japan to comprehend and accept. But many visitors from overseas apparently don't feel that as much due to the weak yen of late. That could change if the yen suddenly strengthens. Despite these things, Niseko continues to be super popular and also very busy. So obviously there are still many people lining up to come here and ‘experience the magic’! Be aware of social media bombast Nobody needs little old me to tell them this, but I think it is worth emphasising. When researching, I recommend being wary of headlines and outlandish claims you might see on social media. Regular readers will know that I'm not the biggest fan of that world, not least because I increasingly find lots of content to be insincere, sometimes misleading, and in some cases just dishonest. The hype and the headlines are sometimes quite brazen. Remember, the algorithms of creators encourage regular attention-grabbing headlines, so it's superlatives all the way. Sometimes, people get freebies and/or are paid for the publicity they generate. SnowJapan is regularly approached by people, often calling themselves 'influencers', who offer guaranteed positive publicity about 'your ski resort / hotel / etc' in return for freebies. (They don't even do basic research to know that SnowJapan is not a 'ski resort / hotel / etc'!). Just think about that for a moment. I shared a few more thoughts on that kind of thing on 29th December. The above does not only apply to Niseko coverage, and I am most definitely not saying that everything is tainted. I hope that more intelligent readers (like you!) will be good at filtering out the obvious stuff. Being nice Lastly and perhaps a good thought to end on, one day I talked about just being nice (14th January). In the end, you may not agree with some of my opinions throughout the season, but you can be sure that whatever I write, I come from a place of honesty and love. As a long-term resident of the region, there are clearly some changes in recent years that I do not like, and I do have some concerns shared by others. But having said that, I still love it. I wouldn't be devoting so much time every morning for six months of the year writing these reports if I didn't! I hope I still feel that way next year, in two years, in five years... Thanks for your support Sometimes, people ask what they can do to help and support SnowJapan. Passing along large brown unmarked envelopes stuffed with wads of cash is always encouraged and will get you favourable coverage (**), but, seriously, simply letting others know about these reports and the SnowJapan site, in general, is also a big help. I/we thank you for that support. SnowJapan is genuinely 100% independent and is not doing any of this on behalf of anyone. It is not trying to persuade you to come to Niseko or anywhere else in Japan, or trying to sell you anything. In fact, it's not trying to get you to do anything at all. We're just telling you about it. I can tell you, writing these reports with a feeling of freedom from not being beholden to anyone or having obligations to fulfil is really cool. It might be a (very!) time-consuming commitment, and I absolutely feel a sense of responsibility, but just telling the truth makes it easy. And I genuinely believe that you, the reader, benefits from that. I've said it before, I truly believe that is one of the things that makes SnowJapan a truly unique project. If you wish to get in touch, you can do so here. I am aware that many people read the reports daily, but it is always nice to get some actual feedback. You can even tell me I'm rubbish or say derogatory things about toast, too, if you feel the need! Please note that I can't reply to individual messages but will eventually read them all. Thank you in advance. Finally That's all from me for the 2024-2025 winter season. I hope you enjoyed the reports and found them to be helpful in some way and interesting. It has been a pleasure. It is now time for me to have my fill of toast and prepare for a prolonged summer hibernation. (I'm particularly excited about not having to check official websites and their social media every morning for six months. Yey! That is the only part of doing this that I dislike). I plan to return in November, when I should be ready to get going with my commentary on the 2025-2026 Niseko winter season. It's only 6 months away! But for now, thank you, take care and peace to all. * Half joke ** Joke Niseko Now 2024-2025 season Data as of Tuesday 6th May 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 783cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 95 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 24cm (6th February) November 2024 snowfall 38cm reported on 8 days December 2024 snowfall 311cm reported on 28 days January 2025 snowfall 161cm reported on 19 days February 2025 snowfall 196cm reported on 24 days March 2025 snowfall 76cm reported on 15 days April 2025 snowfall 1cm reported on 1 day May 2025 snowfall 0cm Previous report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. There seems to be a chance of some light rain from time to time across the weekend. Let's hope we get lucky and it holds off. It is impressive how good the snow cover still is at Kagura (check out the image below). I can't remember the ski area closing in mid-May with so much snow left. The ski area could clearly continue beyond Sunday, but there have been no hints that they will. Sunday is scheduled to be the last day of the season.
