I am in Nagano city at the moment and providing this report to you from here and so going on the official word from the resort as well as a phone call to a friend in Nozawa. Usually in early April there's not going to be much action but... ...the resort is reporting 25cm of fresh snow this morning! Yes, I had to look twice there, but that's what they have. Uenotaira and Yamabiko both with 25cm of fresh, and some snow down to the village as well... though actually the sun is out now as we approach 9am. Sounds like a good start to the day to me! There doesn't actually seem to be big changes to what is open this morning, but the Paradise quad seems to be moving. The forecast for today and tomorrow is a mix of sun, cloud and sometimes snow. Anyway, today should be a real bonus for people heading up top. I just wish I was! Wrap up well if you are, it's cold up there. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Welcome to the weekend and it's going to be another warm spring ski day here in Nozawa. Today is going to be the better of the two weekend days as the forecast remains for rain tomorrow. Can it snow on the upper slopes later on in the day? From Monday, lift ticket prices get a bit cheaper - for example a one day adult ticket is reduced from 4600 yen to 3500 yen; a one day child ticket is reduced from 2100 yen to 1500 yen. No word yet on any particular lift/course plans, so for now I am presuming that they'll stay open as they have been. There's still good snow cover, so no need to be shutting off areas just yet... The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Did you see Nozawa on the news yesterday? Nozawa as well as relatively close-by Myoko and Tsunan in Niigata Prefecture all made the national news with the silly amounts of snow that has been falling in the region. To add to that 1m that I was talking about yesterday, the resort reported 48cm of fresh snow at the top of the mountain during the day yesterday through until evening and this morning they are saying 50cm (from 3pm yesterday until 8am this morning). It's one of those times when if anything people are prepared to under-report, for fear of scaring people away! Sounds funny that doesn't it. A great situation to be in though and infinitely preferably to the opposite! The official snow depth for the upper Yamabiko area of the resort here in Nozawa has already smashed through the 2m mark. Just to compare for the fun of it - last year on 15th December 2013, the same number was on 100cm. It's all very exciting anyway and while we're still in the middle of the storm so to speak it's going to be an absolutely fantastic start to the season. Funny how we were talking about the resort delaying opening due to lack of snow... how long ago was that? ;) While it's snowing still now, it is expected to stop maybe later this morning. That won't last for long though with it forecast to start snowing again later on in the day tomorrow with heavy snow to fall overnight into Wednesday and Thursday. Come Friday and Saturday, we might get to see the sun and some clearer skies. Guessing but would surely expect Nozawa Onsen to be near fully open by the end of the week and the weekend. I will of course post any information as we get it on here. After the limited lift operations and courses open yesterday, we seem to be back to where we were with the top runs once again open today and the Gondola scheduled to start it's day of work at 8:40am. Here's what the resort reports this morning in terms of new snowfall since yesterday afternoon: Yamabiko - 50cm Uenotaira - 40cm Hikage - 25cm Nagasaka - 25cm It's calmer this morning now that storm has passed but there's still lots of cloud hanging around for the moment. So it's not sunny from the start of the day, but we are still expecting conditions to clear up as the day moves on. A cold start though it's -3 here in the village and Yamabiko area reporting a temperature of -8 degrees as of 8am. Tomorrow looks set to be milder and we may some rain falling at lower levels before it hopefully ends up snowing once again with snow forecast for Sunday. I don't think we're expecting a snow storm anything like what we seen over the last few days though. No confirmed news of the resort opening up more tomorrow. With more people surely going to turn up this weekend, I'm expecting the resort to be as good as fully open. Let me emphasise that's just a guess at this stage. I will update this report later in the day if and when I have more firm news on that front. UPDATE @ EVENING Yes, so tomorrow will be the Grand Opening of the resort. Which means a few event like things going on and more importantly... the resort will be almost all opened up. All but a few steeper areas seem to be planning to be open tomorrow. I'll have more info in the morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Some great big whopping ridiculously large numbers to report this morning. The resort yesterday was noting 10cm of snowfall during the day on the upper slopes when I checked last night. Hmmm, ok, but where's the heavy snow we wanted. Well, this morning, it's here! For the period 3pm yesterday until 8am this morning, this is how much fresh snow they are reporting: Yamabiko - 95cm (!) Uenotaira - 90cm Nagasaka - 80cm That's new snowfall, not the snow depth. That new snow has all of a sudden brough up the snow depth on the top Yamabiko runs up to 165cm. In previous reports I have mentioned how quickly things can change and today is a great example. All of a sudden, 1m of fresh snow. Lifts and courses that are open seem to be the same as yesterday and while it's a decent area, it will be great to see the whole resort be able to open and I'm sure that will be fairly soon with all this snow. Forecast: snow through today and getting weaker by tomorrow morning. Then more heavy snow late Tuesday and Wednesday. We might get some sun on Friday. Lots more snow to get before then though. It's all great to get very excited about the deep powder snow conditions, but care is most definitely needed. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A lot of snow up on the top areas of Nozawa - 35-37cm being reported by the resort on the top Uenotaira and Yamabiko areas respectively, so conditions should be great up there in particular this morning. Lower runs reporting up to 25cm, so good conditions all round and about that much since yesterday at base. Forecast isn't for that much snow today though it is falling from the skies at the minute. The clouds may even clear and the sun say hello later on according to a local forecast. Tomorrow is due to be a bit warmer with temps rising to around 4 degrees but we should be back to snow again as we move into Wednesday. Poor visibility at the start of the day on the upper areas in particular. Santa was at Nozawa yesterday and he's here today as well, having a leisurely breakfast and hitting the slopes at 10am. First 100 people get a present off him as well, so give him a shout if you see him! Today is a National Holiday in Japan for the Emperors Birthday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Lower areas only open this morning due to windy conditions on the mountain. As this snowstorm continues to make headlines in Japan, we keep getting more snow, but the strong winds mean that only the lower Hikage and Nagasaka runs are able to open. In some seasons, the resort would have to be totally closed as there wouldn't be enough snow down at base but not this time round. Different set of lifts moving this morning so it's a bit of a different 'look' to Nozawa. The resort is reporting 43cm of fresh snowfall at top Yamabiko, 40cm on Uenotaira and 70cm on Nagasaka. Interesting numbers there! There's what we had yesterdaty as well to add to that. Just thing... lots. Check out the official snow depths. Yamabiko - 270cm. Uenotaira - 250cm. Nagasaka - 200cm. It's only mid December! Sugoi. Snow, possibly heavy snow, wind and cold conditions still forecast for the day today. It should clear up by morning though leaving us with sunny conditions tomorrow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Back to normal with the lifts and courses this morning and 10cm or so of fresh snow to report. Yesterday was rather uneventful in terms of what was open on the mountain and the weather (bit wet at one point), so good to see us back to snow and open. The resort is this morning reporting 25cm of fresh snowfall on the top runs. As you can see from the images below, visibility is poor. Not much to see. Care needed. The snow is really coming down at the moment as well so I expect it to be piling up quite quickly. Which is what the forecast has us down for today and tomorrow. Winds might well still affect things today again, so got to keep an eye on that. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Rain yesterday down here in the village I'm afraid, but snow (borderline sleet at times) was falling at higher elevations at times during the day. Hakuba 47 reported 1cm or so of snow mid afternoon. Light rain this morning too, but I am happy to report that has stopped now and it's just cloudy at the moment. Looks like upper slopes of the resorts are shrouded in cloud and fog with poor visibility out there. Tomorrow is the first day of March of course. Snow would be a good start to the new month and it does seem to be a chance of snowfall during the day tomorrow. It's still going to be quite mild though, so it's all borderline. Some light snow falling this morning and a few cm on the ground with up to 10cm being reported on upper slopes - updates from around the resorts where available below. It is not snowing right now outside my window but there seems to still be a lot of cloud around, but I can see the sun shining through the clouds in some places as well. A high temp of +4C is due in Hakuba this afternoon. Not a huge amount but good to get a bit of fresh snow, though it will quickly be scraped away I would imagine. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is colder this morning again. I don't seem to have said this as much this year but... Hakuba Cortina wins the 'most snowfall' competition this morning, reporting 20cm. Other resorts coming in with numbers ranging from just a few cm at base to 15cm on upper areas. Mixed bag of numbers, but whatever - there's light fresh snow everywhere this morning and I for one am looking forward to getting out on the slopes this morning even if visibility does look limited. Quite strong winds in places at the moment which have the potential to affect lift operations - I see that the top lifts at Goryu and Line C and E at 47 are not moving early due to the winds. Happo appears to be unaffected for now and it looks like Cortina is open normally too. Snow showers are expected over the next few days and through into next week as well and it will be remaining cold. Lovely weather conditions yesterday in Hakuba with blue skies in the morning; it started to get overcast and cloudy later after lunchtime and by the time it got dark it was all grey. Snow to report overnight. Resorts saying they have up to 5-10cm fresh out there and it is snowing now. Rather wet and not really sticking big time here in the village at the moment as it is keeping quite mild. Limited visibility on the slopes. The forecast remains hopeful of some decent snow ahead of us. It should be colder tomorrow and snowing. I hope I can bring news of fresh delivery of quality snow tomorrow morning.
